    More Righteous Than I

    More Righteous Than I
A substantial review of the previous study about Judah and Tamar (since we've had a two week break). We discover even more about Judah's spiritual decline. Why did Judah send Hirah to reclaim his pledge? Why was Judah to quick to relinquish his claim on his pledge? What was so significant about Judah's willingness to abandon his staff to a stranger and a prostitute? To whom does God entrust the protection of such an important token? What is the importance of Judah's statement about Tamar that she was "more righteous than I?" What is the great change that overtakes Judah upon the revelation that he is the father of Tamar's twins? How does this passage disclose the marvelous grace of God to both Judah and Tamar? (51 min.)

    The Reason For Egypt

    The Reason For Egypt
This is another one of those very difficult passages in Genesis. Why does the author interrupt the story of Joseph to tell us about this seemingly unrelated incident with Judah? How does this passage reveal to us Judah's character. Why is that important? What was this whole thing about Onan fulfilling the "duty of a brother-in-law" by taking Tamar as a wife? What really was Onan's sin? What is this whole thing about levirate marriage all about? What did God think about it? What was Judah doing wrong with Tamar? How does this story fill us in on Israel's experience in Egypt? (53 min.)

What Goes Around Comes Around - Full Circle // Scott Landry
It’s likely that you’ve heard the phrase, “What goes around comes around.” It’s also likely that you’ve experienced this principle play out in various ways, in various arenas of your life and to varying degrees. Thankfully there is an exception to this rule, and as we conclude this series, we’re going to discover what that exception is, how we can experience it, and most importantly, why experiencing that exception is possible.

What Goes Around Comes Around - The Exception to the Rule // Scott Landry

What Goes Around Comes Around - The Exception to the Rule // Scott Landry
It’s likely that you’ve heard the phrase, “What goes around comes around.” The interesting thing about this principle is, it doesn’t always happen right away. It can take days weeks, months, or even years for a split-second decision to “come around.” In part 3 of this series, we’re going to look at a famous story that took decades to unfold. It’s a sobering reminder that actions and decisions have consequences, even when and if we don’t see them or experience them right away.

What Goes Around Comes Around - The Web Gets Tangled // Scott Landry

What Goes Around Comes Around - The Web Gets Tangled // Scott Landry
No doubt you are familiar with the saying, “What goes around comes around.” What about, “What a tangled web we weave when first we try and deceive?” What goes around does come around. Deceit has a way of catching up to us and making our lives, relationships, finances, and futures complicated. When deceit catches up to us, it’s easy to be angry at the consequence and while being blind to where it all started. In part 2 of this series, we’re going to look at how one man’s decision led to a series of complications it was almost impossible for him to get out of, until a decision someone else made led to a turning point in his life. What we see in their past will shed light on our present.

Advent 2023 - Day 15 A God of moving forward, not looking back

Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife Matthew 1:5-6
“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). Matthew 1:23

Have you ever wondered why God included the mothers/women He did in the genealogy of Jesus?
Tamar had been lied to and slept with her father-in-law.
    Rahab was a prostitute.
Ruth was a Gentile and lived in Bethlehem.
Bathsheba didn't even have her name mentioned!
What they all have in common is that they have flaws and yet, they're part of Jesus's lineage! Jesus is fully human and yet, He was God!

God loves us, sees us for who we are in His eyes and can do great things despite our flaws! Join me in reading Matthew 1 and be encouraged about the Christmas miracle He can do in our lives!

Curse God and Die - The Book of Job

Curse God and Die - The Book of Job

In this Bible Story, Satan makes a second attempt to break Job. Satan removes his health, and Job is faced with his wife and friends, who tragically fail to comfort him. This story is inspired by Job. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is Job 2:9 from the King James Version.

Episode 58: Once again Satan comes into the presence of The LORD, and once again God praises His servant Job, pointing out that even though He allowed Satan to take away everything he owned, Job still praised God. So Satan tries again to break Job, this time by taking away his health. Covered in boils and in grief, Job sits outside mourning his loss and praying to God. His friends arrive to comfort him, but, just like what can happen to us today, the conversation turns towards words of blame instead of comfort. But even in his anger, Job still does not curse God.

Episode Title: Raping Tamar, a Podcast Play | Reenacting Bible Stories | Episode 3 | African Audio Drama | Mother isn’t Murder

It’s sad that rape and sexual assault have existed since Bible times. It’s even sadder that people continue to believe that they can take others by force (without their consent).

Re-enacting the Bible story of Tamar’s rape by her step-brother, Amnon was a very disturbing experience for me. First, because I couldn’t get over the fact that his cousin (Jonadab) suggested the rape. And second, even when King David heard of it, he only got angry. But he did nothing.

It is WRONG to let rapists go scot-free, irrespective of who they are to the victim/abused. Absalom, Tamar’s brother waited two years to kill Amnon, which was more than enough time for their father, King David, to act. Honestly, I don’t understand why the king didn’t get justice for Tamar.

What’s the summary? Rape is a grievous crime that deserves to be punished. I know God hates it, and he’s counting on us to speak up for the victims of rape.

If we can’t protect them, let’s get justice for them.

Experience Tamar’s rape with me as I reenact this Bible story in my unique style of solo voice performing, mixing languages, and representing the African culture on my podcast show, Mother isn’t Murder.

Today I am sharing one of my last messages for our Summer Sermon Series.  We will be back to our regularly scheduled programming next week. Thanks for switching gears a bit to allow us at The Parable Podcast a little space to enjoy these last few days with our kids before school starts. This message was a previous message I shared at our home church of West Ridge.  I hope you enjoy this message today and it encourages you wherever you are.

    Message Notes

“Do not take advantage of the widow or the fatherless. If you do and they cry out to me, I will certainly hear their cry.” Exodus 22:22

Tamar harbored deep resentment toward her father-in-law because she knew by this time that Shelah had grown up, but she had not been given to him in marriage as Judah had promised. Genesis 38:14

13… Tamar learned that her father-in-law would be coming to Timnah to shear his sheep, 14 she took off her widow’s clothes, put on a veil to conceal her true identity, and sat down at the entrance to Enaim along the road to Timnah. … 15 When Judah passed by and saw her, he thought she was a prostitute because she had her face covered. 16 He decided to proposition her. Genesis 38:13-16

It was the owner of these items who made me pregnant. Please, take a close look and tell me whose personal seal, cord, and walking stick these are. Genesis 38:25

“Jesus: Let the first stone be thrown by the one among you who has not sinned." John 8:11

“Tamar is more righteous than him”

A Father to the fatherless, a defender of widows. - Psalm 68:5

“Certainly the faithful love of the LORD hasn’t ended; certainly God’s compassion isn’t through! Lamentations 3:22

God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Romans 5:8

    Reflection Questions
    1. Journal about a time that seemed so obscure and out of whack in your life and looking back now you can see God's hand at work for a certain reason in your life?

    2. A prayer for yourself this week:
God thank you that I can be saved by your unconditional Grace. I believe you love me more than I can comprehend. God thank you for sending your son Jesus so he could die for me. I lay everything at your feet and give my life to you. All I can say is thank you. Amen.

David and the Census [David 12]

David and the Census [David 12]

    2 Samuel 24 // Ben Beasley

The question isn’t if we’ll fall. It’s when. Some can ignore it for a while, but eventually, we come to terms with our own proclivities, areas of brokenness, and destructive behaviors. If we’re honest with ourselves, everyone has moments and sometimes seasons when we’ve intentionally made destructive decisions toward ourselves, toward others, and God. Where do you fall, when you fall? One of the key dynamics throughout the whole Samuel scroll is comparing Saul and David. Fascinating: David and Saul both fall. David is — in many ways — recorded as falling harder and farther…but the difference is that David knows where to fall. When Saul was faced with his sin, he blamed others, and tried to just avoid consequences. When David was faced with his own sin, he owned it. All of it. And he fell into the Lord’s hands…because he trusted that God’s mercy would get the last word. When we fall on the LORD, his mercy gets the last word. What about you today?

    David and Absalom [David 11]

    2 Samuel 16: 5-12 // Ben Beasley

I understand that there are people here who have lived more life than me. Who have experienced much more than me. I’m well aware of that fact. But in my years, I’ve lived enough life simply to say this. Losses change us. They make us different. We don’t come out the other end the same. If we are honest, the wounds are often there, lying underneath the surface. Losses, whether it’s the loss of a child, a relationship, a dream, or whatever it may be - losses are defining moments in our lives. I would like us to recognize three ways in which suffering changes us; suffering humbles us, suffering leads us to pray, and in suffering, we find compassion for others. We are not alone in our suffering. God enters into our suffering and is the only one who can redeem the mess to offer hope in our suffering.

David and His Children [David 11]

David and His Children [David 11]

    2 Sam 13:1-22 // Bill Gorman

The statistics on sexual assault are alarming, revealing the extent of this pervasive issue. As we dive into Tamar's story, we approach it with compassion, recognizing that it might resonate deeply with your own experiences or those of your loved ones. We want you to know that you are not alone.

In God's wisdom, Scripture presents us with stories like Tamar's to remind us that He does not ignore injustice. We'll explore critical questions that this passage raises, such as cultivating our deepest desires instead of our strongest ones and considering who we listen to in life.

Throughout this teaching, we emphasize the importance of supporting victims of sexual assault and abuse, listening to their stories, and believing them. We are committed to providing a safe space at Christ Community where you can share your experiences without judgment or shame.

As we navigate this challenging territory, we look to Jesus, the true and better son of David, who suffered shame, humiliation, and injustice for our sake. In Christ, we find hope, healing, and a new identity, no longer defined by our past but by God's abundant grace and love.

POD 011 | Hope and Healing for Victims of Sexual Assault: An Interview with Justin Holcomb

POD 011 | Hope and Healing for Victims of Sexual Assault: An Interview with Justin Holcomb

Trauma from sexual assault and abuse can disrupt our ability to have healthy relationships with God, family, and the world. It often causes us to perceive danger where it doesn't exist, can narrow our world, and limit daily peace. In this episode, Justin Holcomb discusses the sensitive issue of sexual violence, emphasizing empathy, vulnerability, and the power of storytelling for healing. Drawing from the biblical story in 2 Samuel 13, Holcomb explores themes of disgrace and hope, and the transformative role of the gospel. He addresses misconceptions and definitions of sexual assault and abuse, highlighting their prevalence in society, even within religious contexts. Practical advice is offered for engaging in empathetic conversations and creating safe spaces for survivors to share their experiences. Tune in to gain a deeper understanding of how to support survivors of sexual violence and how survivors can find help.

    THREE KEY TAKEAWAYS:

The three key takeaways from this episode of theFormed.life are:

    1. Empathy and Listening: When engaging with survivors of sexual assault, it is crucial to show empathy and be fully present. Listening without trying to fix or offer advice can help survivors feel understood and not alone.
    2. Healing and Trust: Building trust is essential in the healing process, and it requires time, transparency, and authenticity. Small steps and patient engagement can help survivors build trust and feel safe within a community of faith.
    3. The Gospel and Identity: The effects of sexual assault include distorted identity and shame. The work of Christ and the power of the Gospel are relevant in addressing these effects. By focusing on what the Creator and Redeemer says about their identity, survivors can counter distorted self-perceptions and find hope in the healing process.

    QUOTES:

"Our definition of sexual assault is any type of sexual behavior or contact where consent is not freely given or obtained and is accomplished through force, intimidation, violence, coercion, manipulation, threat, deception or abuse of authority."

    — Justin Holcomb

"The survivor of the victim feels embarrassed and shameful because they feel like they somehow they were involved and that they chose that they used their agency to do this when they actually were being forced and threatened. And that's how the manipulation works."

    — Justin Holcomb

"The listen to and believe language comes from all of the research. They've actually asked survivors of abuse what was the most helpful thing in your healing. And the number one, far and away, beyond all other possible things was being listened to and believed by other people."

    — Justin Holcomb

"For someone who feels like filthy, damaged goods, hearing over and over again the words that the Bible uses for those who are adopted and in Christ, pure, perfect, righteous, and holy, without spot, blemish or wrinkle, that's way better than you can ever make up."

    — Justin Holcomb
