KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park (w/ Dennis Satterfield & Scot Burklin)

It’s time to crank up the tunes… and FEAR as we bring you the mechanical mayhem that ruined childhoods and explained way too much about one of the biggest bands of the 70s!! You wanted the best, but what you got is KISS MEETS THE PHANTOM OF THE PARK!! Here to help make sense of this rock n roll nightmare are two old friends and Returning Champions, Dennis Satterfield and Scot Burklin (the Inside The Idiot Box podcast)!! Along the way, we talk bad evil plans, assemble a human pyramid riot, ride the Giant Flicking Tongue, consult the film’s very explanatory tie-in novelization, jump on the robot barbershop quartet trend of 1978, and meet the Schmooniversal Schmonsters!! All this, plus we struggle to understand all the KISS band members' power sets and accents, play a robotic version of Choose Your Own Deathventure, and karate fight albino ape robots!! That’s what you thought this movie was about, right? Karate fights with albino ape robots - cause it is.

Ep 49 Gene Simmons - KISS Solo Album 1978

Ep 49 Gene Simmons - KISS Solo Album 1978

    Episode Notes

Episode 49:  Gene Simmons 1978 Solo Album

It’s September, so you know what that means… we are reviewing another ’78 solo album.  This year we are looking at the Demon himself, Mr. Gene Simmons. How does Gene’s album compare to the previous album by Ace?  Is the album chuck full of the standard ‘Demon’ songs like ‘God of Thunder’, ‘Calling Dr. Love’, ‘Love ‘Em Leave ‘Em’, or ‘Duece’?  Or is this album a reflection of who Gene is as a person, musician, and star?  Nick, Nikko, and Rob take an in-depth look at the face of KISS, or should we say, the man of a thousand faces.  Like all the other solo albums, Gene’s album was released on September 18th, 1978.

After we look at the album, we will make our KISS list, and ‘The 9’ will make an appearance. We will each pick three songs to compile later for a ‘best of’ solo album compilation.  So, let’s ‘Wish Upon a Star’ at the ‘Holiday Inn’ and pray we don’t go ‘Burnin’ Up With Fever’ with ‘Mr. Make Believe’.

From chook farmer to change maker

From chook farmer to change maker

In the 1980s, Annette Shun Wah was at the cutting edge of Australian radio and television and was one of the first Asian Australians to host her own show. Now Annette is empowering a new generation of creative Australians at the OzAsia Festival.

Also, we meet a martial arts performer who tells her life story in an explosively physical theatre show called Action Star, and to mark the 50th anniversary of the National Black Theatre, we ask five First Nations artists what the next 50 years might have in store.

The Winter of Folk Horror, Part 2: Witchcraft & Persecution (Haxan, Il Demonio, Witchfinder General, Witchhammer & Hagazussa)

The Winter of Folk Horror, Part 2: Witchcraft & Persecution (Haxan, Il Demonio, Witchfinder General, Witchhammer & Hagazussa)

The Winter of Folk Horror continues, with a bubbling cauldron of films involving witchcraft, or that boil over into persecution of perceived supernatural abilities. When I see images from our first feature in this episode, they look so old, so authentic, that they MUST be real! But it's Satan's tongue that just may be the most memorable part of Haxan (1922)! If you're seemingly the lone uninhibited woman in a small Italian village, you may be better off exercising some restraint. And if you are practicing a few spells, you probably shouldn't reveal them to anyone, for fear of being being branded as Il Demonio (1963)! One of the most notorious witch-hunters in English history, is brought to the screen by Vincent Price, in perhaps his most vile performance. Your innocence will not save you, when Matthew Hopkins, Witchfinder General (1968), rides into town. Another infuriating travesty of justice transpires, when the accused are brought before a tribunal, with profit in mind. When these methods of torture are utilized, even the most strong-willed can crack under the weight of the Witchhammer (1970). And then from there, a superstitious mountain community has labeled Albrun and her mother as witches. But is there truth in their beliefs? Or does a form of madness take hold in the isolation, that is the only life Albrun has ever known? Get ready for our take on Hagazussa (2017).

Phil here:  Lots has been said and written on Jack Kirby.  It's pretty darn easy to find something somewhere on many of his creations.  The Demon is pretty obviously one of his lessor celebrated brain-children.  Still, I got some magazines to help on the topic!  Naturally, they're from TwoMorrows Publishing.  Once again, if you like what we do here, give them a look!  They're professionals!

The Jack Kirby Collector (TwoMorrows Publishing): 13, 44, 62
I should also mention that the foreword to The Demon collection from DC that I was using also contains a foreword by Mark Evanier.  In it, he describes the origins of how the Demon came to be.

Now, what was in that collection?  I'll tell you!
