THE KILLING With Jim Knipfel and Alexander Zaitchik

THE KILLING With Jim Knipfel and Alexander Zaitchik
In 1956 Stanley Kubrick released his third feature-length movie, The Killing and earlier this sentence I gave serious thought to paying someone on taskrabbit to write this intro. This is a great episode. Jim Knipfel and Alex Zaitchik return. They are both great. I say some dumb bullshit but hopefully don’t ruin it. Sorry, I’m just out of gas right now but wanted to get the podcast up. Subscribe to Jim’s Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/jimknipfel/posts). it’s terrific. Alex's books (https://www.amazon.com/s?k=Alexander+Zaitchik) are also terrific and are on sale at an amazon.com near you. The Sterling Hayden documentary is called Pharoahs of Chaos (https://www.facebook.com/mubi/videos/pharos-of-chaos-now-showing/581776812424549/)for some reason.

Global Audiences of Danish TV Drama

Global Audiences of Danish TV Drama

The global success of Danish TV drama in the late 2000s and early 2010s was surprising because of the relatively small number of people who can understand the Danish language and because the programmes were produced largely for a domestic audience by public broadcasting corporations. Audiences around the world appear to have responded to the combination of authenticity, emotional proximity and the portrayal of gender as well as the exotic Nordicness of the series. Many people from the Anglophone community as well as elsewhere were prepared to watch drama with subtitles in English for the first time. In 2020, the wave of hype around these programmes appears to be over, but key aspects, along with what is often considered to be Nordic Noir, arguably still influence mainstream television-making.

Researchers Pia Majbritt Jensen and Ushma Chauhan Jacobsen from Aarhus University are ideally placed to help us find out why Danish TV drama is popular the world over as they have been involved in an interdisciplinary project which started in 2013 involving seven other scholars from Aarhus University and affiliated scholars in eight different countries focusing on The Killing, Borgen and The Bridge.

Listen to Pia and Ushma discuss with editor of nordics.info, Nicola Witcombe, how different players at many different levels from key broadcasters in the television industry down to bloggers created an organic hype around the series, arguably leading to key elements from the series becoming mainstream today.

Sprinklez: Episode 14: It Makes a Sound (Podcast) ); The Killing (Netflix); Noosa Yoghurt (In Stores & Online)

Hey Sprinklers! Today I have a gem of a podcast recommendation from Nightvale Presents: IT MAKES A SOUND! Which is an incredibly upbeat and slightly sanguine (yeah I had to look the meaning of that word up) fictional tale that is so engaging and at the same time joyously uplifting! It stars the fantastically creative Jacquelyn Landgraf (Who also writes and co-directs the episodes).

Then I tell you about one of my all time favorite murder mystery shows of all time: THE KILLING. Which stars one of the best actresses on any size screen Mireille Enos (World War Z) and the immensely powerful acting of Joel Kinsman (Robocop/Suicide Squad). People have come back and thanked me for recommending this one. Beware it is very intense and touches on disturbing subject matter!!

And last but certainly not least, I have this week's Tasty-Treat-Sesation is the Australian styled yoghurt, NOOSA. Which comes in a variety of sizes and flavors. Creamy and delicious!! (They have citrus flavors including Pineapple, and Blood Orange!)

    Tangents:

Alice Isn't Dead. Also from Night Vale Presents is my favorite of all their podcasts, about a female trucker played by Jasika Nicole (Fringe) in search of her missing wife. It's a little sci-fi a lot of fun.

The Family (Amazon, for purchase/rent only. Not on Prime) Staring Joan Allen (Nixon), Rupert Graves (A Room With a View), Andrew McCarthy (Pretty in Pink) starts out as a great thriller mystery but gets tied up in unseemly and unnecessary plot lines. Worth watching for the performances and if you can imagine what could have been a really good is he/isn't he an imposter show.
