22 | Part Two: Movies to darken your holiday season

22 | Part Two: Movies to darken your holiday season

To recap: The dictionary says there are two types of dystopian society, i.e. one in which there is great suffering or injustice:

    1) Totalitarian - With a system of government that is centralized and dictatorial and requires complete subservience to the state.

    2) Apocalyptic - In which an event involving destruction or damage on an awesome or catastrophic scale has taken place.

If you thought last week’s episode was bleak, brace yourself for something truly, downright awful this week.

And thus draws to a shuddering close, the somewhat chaotic year 2022. Looking out on the new year to come, to quote John & Yoko: “Let’s hope it’s a good one, without any fear.”

21 | Part One: Movies to darken your holiday season

21 | Part One: Movies to darken your holiday season

The dictionary says there are two types of dystopian society, i.e. one in which there is great suffering or injustice:

    1) Totalitarian - With a system of government that is centralized and dictatorial and requires complete subservience to the state.

    2) Apocalyptic - In which an event involving destruction or damage on an awesome or catastrophic scale has taken place.

The jury’s out on which we’d prefer to live in, but suffice it to say that both types enflame the imaginations of film-makers on a regular basis. And so, in this penultimate episode of 2022, we crack open a tall, frosty can of utter despair, abject misery, and really bad vibes as we haul ass up the mighty River Dystopia without so much as a used Canadian Tire paddle and what remains of our wits to guide us. (Sorry, got carried away there.)

BONUS: Dave reaches out to results-driven folks everywhere by sharing his suggestion for a New Year's resolution going forward. Don't push back, double down, or hop on a call until you've tried it.

All that gifting aside, we wish our listeners none of the above, but rather oodles of peace, love, health, and harmony this holiday season. Part Two'll be a-waitin' on the other side…

    050: Hulu Wrap-up

    050: Hulu Wrap-up

Lisa sez: "Cut the cord peoples!"

Brian sez: "Don't forget your animated options"

    Dean sez: "Whats a Hulu?"

Your intrepid reporters from the global resources of the vast Killer Casting Network (KCN) deep dive what is currently keeping them, up way too late, bed-less, bingeing and burning bits & bytes ("But honey ... just one more episode .... PUHlease ?")

Lisa gives a big plug for Reservation Dogs (well she WOULD wouldn't she, coz she was part of the casting team for the pilot !) But hey ... charity starts at home, right ? Also you can hear her thoughts on; The Handmaids Tale, a crazy Nicole Kidman in Nine Perfect Strangers , Y The Last Man, Patton Oswalt in Marvel's animated 'Modok'. But wait ! #notdoneyet ... she also gives shoutouts to 'The Great' with Elle Fanning and Nic Hoult, Alex Garland's 'Devs', The TV re-boot of Nic Hornsby's 'High Fidelity' starring Zoe Kravitz, the sexy/sad Brit offering of Normal People' and the adapted-from-the-podcast 'American Crime Story: Impeachment' covering the Clinton/Lewinsky saga.

Brian has been on an animated tear (That's 'tear' ... not 'tear') so he sketches out why you should watch Solar Opposites from Justin Roiland the creator of Rick and Morty and lays out the result of the love child between Kiwi geniuses Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi .. that would be the vampire mockumentary comedy 'What We Do in the Shadows'

Dean (with no Hulu in Australia) raids his tagged items in the Aussie-based Stan Disney+ and  Binge platforms to come up with the gripping British crime drama 'Vigil'. He also likes The White Lotus and is rewatching the classic Working Dog Productions' razor sharp satire 'Utopia' (which is scarily accurate to his corporate day job)

Dea) WAS going to search up all of the trailers for these shows, to save YOU the trouble, but has decided he cant be arsed and you can do it yourselves. So on that note ... we'll see you on the socials!

RERUN | Amy Landecker — You are the Exception: Ageless in Artistry

RERUN | Amy Landecker — You are the Exception: Ageless in Artistry

Today we have a really special conversation with an actress who has defied what we’re often told is possible in a Hollywood career. She started on stage with the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago, but didn’t make it to Los Angeles till she was nearly 40. She is an example of what can happen when an artist decides to be the exception, embrace fear, and relinquish over-thinking.

We also get to chat about failure, how it is a vital part of success as an actor, and how she’s been able to take professional and personal challenges, and turn them into opportunities to tell stories with some of Hollywood’s most innovative artists.

She’s developed an incredible body of work that includes working with the Cohen Brothers, booking NINE (count them!) NINE guest stars in one year, and most notably her role on Amazon’s Transparent.

Ep.78: How and when are songs selected for TV & film scenes? with Jody Friedman

Ep.78: How and when are songs selected for TV & film scenes? with Jody Friedman

Music clearly impacts us is through its role in TV and movies. The absence of music in trailers or the shows themselves would fundamentally change our viewing experience. But who matches the appropriate song to a scene in a TV show or film for full effect? Music supervisor Jody Friedman explains the music selection process, tips for those interested in the biz, and how the song he composed ended up in The Handmaid’s Tale trailer.

    Ann Dowd

    Ann Dowd

The “stay positive and keep it simple” approach Ann Dowd has toward her work is truly inspiring. A go-to character-actor-extraordinaire for 30 years, she has now received wide acclaim (and an Emmy) for her portrayal of the terrifyingly devout Aunt Lydia in “The Handmaid’s Tale.” And her pitch perfect performance in Craig Zobel’s “Compliance” is, in my opinion, a tour de force for the ages. In this half hour, she talks about the nuts and bolts of playing these roles and generously lets us peek “under the hood” at the inner workings of her craft. Inspiration is guaranteed.
