    MOMENTS TO DUCK AROUND

DYCI: On the Importance of SOPs and Process Management

So, first of all, why it's important is because it allows you to be proactive and set a cadence and a pace of the business that is not always reactionary, and it's not always firefighting. Because when things go the way that we expect them to go, which, you know, rarely happens, everyone's fine like, 'Oh, this is what it's supposed to happen when I come to work today.' But, because in the world of supply chain operations, nothing ever works the way that you expect it to do. Well, if you don't have the SOPs that govern the way you do business, the way workflows happen, the way approvals happen, then it becomes just everyone running around trying to figure out, 'Okay, well, who's going to do this?

DYCI: On Digital Transformation and Software Implementation

And what they actually realized is that they didn't really have a process for new product introduction. So, we were working with items that were being phased out, and, you know, these were finished goods. And then, if you're thinking about, "Okay, well, the finished good is being phased out, you need to now have a forecast for the finished good, the cannibalization, etc., for the new item." But on top of that, all of the components—which are your direct materials—that you need to actually build the new... "Okay, well, how do we now come up with a forecast for that? And determine safety stock, and work with the supplier for lead times, and, you know, all of that?” So, that project recently stands out to me because it's the most recent, and I'm like in it right now, trying to figure it out.

OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY: Get from A to Z Quickly and Cheaply with John Hantzis

OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY: Get from A to Z Quickly and Cheaply with John Hantzis

LOGISTICS HAS A DIRECT IMPACT ON YOUR MARGINS

In this episode of What The Duck?!, we sit down with John Hantzis, the Director of Logistics at AAMP Global. Today, John discusses operational efficiency and how to reduce overall logistics spending as a percentage of sales. He shares how to get products from A to Z by letting the various teams involved interact and looking for areas to reduce cost.

John also covers risk mitigation and the need for companies to be adaptable through dual-sourced options and the many benefits of choosing a 3PL to get your products to more places without adding manpower and leasing burdens. Finally, John talks about the best metrics in choosing a supplier and the tech you can use to improve your logistics.

    MOMENTS TO DUCK AROUND

John: Improve operational efficiency between teams to move products

"Most of what we call it is operational efficiency between air freight, ocean freight, parcel if it needs to move and it needs to get from A to Z, what is the best way for it to happen? But it's also in working with the purchasing team."

John: Landed cost is a major factor to consider

"One of the biggest things that you need to target is your total landed cost because a lot of times you may purchase something that's a great price, but if you're importing from somewhere like China, it has a 25% tariff on that goods, that goods is now significantly higher when you're looking at your total landed cost."

    In this episode we discuss:

    - What are the biggest opportunities in Q4 this year

    - The single point of failure that most brands currently have on Amazon, but they probably don't know it

    - Why 3PL's must be part of your strategy going forwards

    - The importance of a diversified carrier base

    - The 1 skill sellers must have to achieve sustainable success - he took me by surprise with this one

High fidelity data in supply chain, and project44 - a chat with Christian Piller

On this episode of the Digital Supply Chain podcast, I spoke with Christian Piller. Christian  is Vice President of Value Engineering at project44 (appropriately known as @freightpipes on Twitter). project44 is a US based company operating globally who bill themselves as "the world's leading Advanced Visibility Platform for shippers and third-party logistics firms".

Christian explained the business in detail (using the example of a Spanish Widget manufacturer (!), and how project 44 would help the manufacturer see where it's shipments of supplies were, as well as potentially its shipments of goods to its customers, and their customers, and so on.

We had a fascinating conversation, and I really liked Christian's point towards the end about the visibility of data - listen for yourselves, and let me know what you think.

Now we are in June, I am trialling a new feature on the podcast - listeners stories. If you have a cool supply chain story you'd like featured on the show, send it to me via email (tom.raftery @ sap.com), or just send it to me as a direct message on Twitter/LinkedIn. Audio messages will get played (unless you specifically ask me not to).

76 Delivering Like Amazon with Casey Armstrong, Chief Marketing Officer at ShipBob

76 Delivering Like Amazon with Casey Armstrong, Chief Marketing Officer at ShipBob

Logistics is one of the most complex pieces of running an ecommerce company. Cost-effective shipping solutions that don’t compromise customer experience are not one-size-fits-all, and keeping up with the expectations set by Amazon Prime is a constant struggle.

Most often, 3PLs (third-party logistics service), are responsible for storing and shipping products for ecommerce. Casey Armstrong is the Chief Marketing Officer of ShipBob, a 3PL that operates a growing network of distribution centers in major U.S. cities. They’re helping ecommerce businesses run a flexible and speedy supply chain. With tools getting more sophisticated, Casey says long term success comes back to actionable customer data.

On this episode, Casey answers fundamental questions businesses should ask when outsourcing their fulfillment. He shares the cost structure of 3PLs and gives insight into best practices around geography and vendor management. Casey talks about deciding what’s important for your business when splitting inventory, kitting, and shipping cold or bulky items (9:36). He gives indicators for when an ecommerce company should outsource fulfillment (23:46). Instead of solely focusing on the top funnel, Casey gives different levers brands can pull from to improve their bottom line (37:32). With companies like Shopify and Instagram reducing barriers to stay close to the wallet, Casey and Stephan talk about the future of the ecommerce stack, navigating new technologies, and improving instant, one-click checkout (42:25).
