Mean Girls - 1984: The Ultimate 80s Makeover of the Lindsay Lohan Classic

What if 'Mean Girls' (the original 2004 version) was recast in 1984?

Imagine slipping into a time machine and landing in the heyday of 80s teen cinema—what would Tina Fey's "Mean Girls" look like with the stars of that rad decade? That's exactly the tantalizing scenario we chew over with the fabulous Aly Dale, as we embark on a wild ride through North Shore High with a retro twist.  Tune in for a podcast that's as much a celebration of "Mean Girls" as it is a playful foray into the art of the hypothetical cast.

Strap in for a time-traveling journey through cinema as we juxtapose the teen movie landscapes of the 2000s against the backdrop of 1984's silver screen hits. With Aly in tow, we delve into the iconic films of 1984 that charmed audiences and set box office registers a-ringing, from "Splash" to "Beverly Hills Cop." Meanwhile, we don't shy away from debating the finer points of Roger Ebert's insights or pondering the tantalizing 'what-ifs' of alternate casting histories. This episode isn't just a podcast—it's a love letter to the film that shaped many filmgoers our age.

Wrap up your visit to 1984 with a heartfelt nod to the actors who enlivened "Mean Girls," as we pay tribute to Rachel McAdams' tour-de-force performance and reflect on Lindsay Lohan's Hollywood journey. The road from child star to adult actor is fraught with challenges, and we examine this transition through the lens of other famous names in the industry. Whether you're here for the '80s nostalgia, a fresh take on a beloved film, or the simple joy of "what might have been," our episode is the ultimate high school movie makeover, served with a side of cultural reflection and a dash of whimsy. We can only hope this episode is worthy of the title "fetch!"

What’s a totally normal animal body part to draw? Who decided the perfect lady measurements? And what’s the fastest way to shut down sex gossip? We put these questions and more under the microscope as we watch Season 4, Episode 4 of Family Matters.

Alex Diamond, David Kenny, and John McDaniel heard that the long-running network sitcom Family Matters ends with side character Steve Urkel going to space. And the best way to figure out how that happened - obviously - is to watch the last episode first and make our way backwards through nearly ten years of television.

YNFA 045: Mean Girls, or The Importance of Being Fetch

On Wednesdays we wear pink and today we infiltrate the Plastics in the 2004 teen classic Mean Girls. How many surprising new facts do we discover about the depth of Randall’s love for this movie? (Hint: it’s A LOT.) Can we just take a moment to recognize that everyone in this cast is bringing their A game? Does the feminist message of this movie stand up to contemporary values? We’ll let you know once we perfect this totally appropriate Jingle Bell Rock routine.

2007: Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story / Top Cult Classic Comedies

It's time to Walk Hard. In the 2000s the music biopic was big, and Dewey Cox skewered the format brilliantly. Wickedly funny, insane moments, and fantastic music all made this movie great. It was also littered with stars: John C. Reilly, Kristen Wiig, Tim Meadows, Harold Ramis, Jenna Fischer, Chris Parnell, Jack White, Jonah Hill, and more.

But it was a total flop at the box office. Given a second life on DVD and streaming, it is now a cult classic. So we end the the episode by drafting our favorite cult classics and underappreciated comedies. This is a good one. I think you kinda want it. Let's Duet!

What is there even to say about one of the cultural touchstones in early 00s cinema? There is a shared history that we all have with this film and me, Jules, and Mikey had a fucking time talking it. We get into the awesomely classic fashion, our own adolescent tales, and the quotes we use on a REGULAR basis.

It's the finale of 'Back to School Month' on Late to the Movies, and we're marking the occasion with the most-requested topic yet - Mean Girls! ...and also the direct-to-ABC Family sequel, Mean Girls 2. Ben, Bree, Kay and Sam talk about Lindsay Lohan, high school, and trying to make fetch happen in the 2004 original (00:00-58:30) before turning their attention to the very strange, very unnecessary 2011 sequel (58:30-1:20:30). Mean Girls was directed by Mark Waters, written by Tina Fey, and stars Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried, Tim Meadows, Amy Poehler, and Fey. First time you saw the movie?

    Plot:

It opens at Westford State Mental Hospital with Hal from Happy Gilmore finding the psycho is on the loose. Cutting to Salem, we see Hubie biking through the town, being friendly, but everyone being a dick to him, throwing eggs at him. A slow motion viewing of Violet Valentine, sends Hubie flying over a car. Hubie is working at the meat counter, Mr. Landofla is called and calls him Pubie. Generally giving him shit, when, with the help fo the other employee, they jump scare Hubie with the lambs head in the meat case. Everyone laughs. Sgt Downy is watching videos in his cruiser, like all cops do, and he gets a call that Richard Hartman escaped the psych ward. Its revealed that Downy testified against him, when Hubie startles him, telling him the O'Doyle kid was buying a bunch TP. Hubie obviously is a worry wort as Downy tells him not to bother him, a gang of kids with scream masks chase after him, and he expertly dodges everything, including flaming dog shit. Hubie takes a tumble and they ride off with an "O'Doyle Rules"... Hubies new neighbor Walter Lambert helps him up, and some back story about his swiss army thermos. We see how over done his house is for halloween. He walks in and is scared by a decoration. Hubies mom is wearing a 'boner doner' shirt and they discuss Mr. Lambert. His mom comments how hard Hubie works to help others, but that he needs to stand up for himself. In his room, Hubie is reminiscing about high school, and see that Sgt. Downy and Violet were a couple, and he regrets not being brave enough to ask her out. He gets scared, again, and busts his window with the year book, and cleans it up with the thermos. Outside the house, we see the escaped inmate peeing in front of Hubies house.

    S:

-Regarding him getting scared so much... Why is halloween his favorite holiday? Also, how can you get scared by decorations that you obviously put up?

-The kid who plays Deli Mike was supposed to be played by Cameron Boyce, but he died from epilepsy complications days before filming began.

At Violets house, shes watching Wake Up Boston and all the anchors are dressed at Harley Quinn, they interview the Salem mayor. Sgt Downy is investigating a pig that was killed, and it almost descends into ta domestic dispute. At the salem museum, the janitor is making fun of Hubie in front of Violet, and even the museum worker throws away his word searches. She introduces him to her children, including foster children, and Hubie tells that his ancestors were in the Salem witch trials, where Chris was a judge. She discloses she and Sgt. Downy are divorced, and she makes it VERY obvious shes interested. She mentions something off about a Lambers tombstone, and Hubie goes to investigate. There is of course a funeral going on right next to the grave he's looking for. As Hubie digs, he's throwing dirt on the attendants. He finds Walters grave says born in 1661, but no death date. We learn it was Landolfas dad who died... He begins to apologize, but it was a rouse to push Hubie in the grave. When the gravedigger starts to throw dirt, he says hes down there, it scares the digger, he grabs his chest, and falls in, on to Hubie...which would be the only way Trey could get someone on top. Riding his bike down the street, ducking random objects thrown at him, Hubie finds Mr. Lambert boarding up his house and they have a very strange conversation about age. At the school, O'Doyle gives one of Violets foster kid a hard time, and a teacher sticks up for her. Hubie comes to give a halloween safety speech, wearing his pee stained sheet. He starts to explain his GHOST acronym, and he gets scared by a kid in costume, so they all start throwing food at him. At a coffee shop, Violets son Tommy tries to hit on the barista, and she tells him about the halloween party. A confusing phone call to the radio station, and at Violets house, she tells her kids Hubie is the nicest guy in town, and that niceness matters. Halloween starts, and the escaped inmate ominously puts on a pig mask.

    S:

-The mayors jacket is like the mayors from jaws

-The two girls that are Violets kids are Adam Sandlers real life kids

-I get the comedy...but why dig up a grave like that when there's a funeral going on right next to it. Come back in an hour. Jeez.

As Hubie leaves, his mom implores him to stay. As he rides, he saves a cat, and Violet threatens the woman to thank Hubie... Which she still doesn't. Hubie almost asks Violet out, and shes visibly disappointed. We see a girl who is about to take more than one piece of candy, and he starts to teach her a lesson about the honor system. Mr. Hennessey approaches and gives him more crap, and the others laugh at him. He tells him he heard weird noises coming from Mr. Lamberts house, so Hubie goes to investigate. Hearing the noises, Hubie racks up a B and E, and gets in the house. Searches for him, he falls into the basement and finds things leading him to believe Mr. Lambert may have a dog... He finds Walter, but he takes off. At the police station, Downy is still talking to the farmers, when Hubie interrupts. Downy tells him about the AUU, Auxiliary Undercover Unit. Hes not to contact anyone, and to keep a log of what he finds, and drop it in the trash can across the town hall, and he agrees just like Tuckers captain told him. Cookie builds a candy tower to donate, as Hubie suggested, but she can't find Tommy, so she goes to Danielle for help. We find Tommy at the halloween party. Deli Mike spikes the punch, when the barista finds Tommy and they flirt. Hubie enters and starts pooping the party. They threaten to kill him and he goes into a boner tirade. Deli Mike hatches a plan to scare Hubie in the corn maze. Tommy and the barista go to tell Hubie its a prank. Mike scares barista Megan, and he punches Tommy. We see someone/something approach Mike and he looks scared, and it cuts to Hubie finding Tommy and Megan. Walking through the maze, he finds Mike tied up and gagged. and he's just yanked into the corn. According to the voice over it's 9pm. Hubie tries to contact Downy, but he ignores him. Violet arrives at the diner misses a call from Danielle. At the drive in the Hennessys comment how impressive it is how long Hubie has been a loser, and hatch an idea to scare him. Mrs. Hennessy approaches Hubie and tells him about a scary old car. As he approaches, the lights come on, the engine starts, and it starts to approach him, he sees it's a headless driver, and he runs scared. The top drops and the kids in the scream masks start throwing eggs at him, he uses a grapple hook to get away, and they all laugh at him. Hubie encounters Walter, who he asks if he's a werewolf, and Walter turns and runs. At a city party, the mayor tells Downy they're not cancelling any of the activities because of a lost kid. The girls are wondering around looking for Tommy and encounter the guy in the pig mask. Hubie at the diner, talks with Violet about purpose, as he mixes soups in his thermos. She offers him some chardonnay, complements him and calls him a hero. The Hennessys are driving and laughing at Hubie when they encounter something in the road. He gets out to move what turns out to be be a scare crow, and he vanishes. Mrs. Hennessy gets out calling for him, and she's yanked away.

    S:

-If Violet is SO into Hubie, why doesn't she ask him out? We're not kids anymore... The best part about being an adult, is we can do what we want. For kids, I do think the guy should ask the girl...but after a certain age... fuck it. who cares?

-Seems like a pretty killer halloween party for all the underage kids to be drinking at... obviously someone had to know what was going on?

-With everyone out trick or treating, at the drive in, who is home to give out candy.

-Where did the old car come from?

-Any pranks on people when you were younger? Tp yards, fork, anything like that?

Hubie is riding his bike looking for Danielle and Cookie, dodging objects thrown at him. Hubies mom looks at how people have vandalized her yard when Walter comes running by. He handcuffs himself to his fridge when the pig mask guy arrives and says they need to talk. Tommy and Megan are looking for the girls when Hubie arrives with them. Hubie tells them to be safe, that he's going to protect the city. In the bathroom, he hears a dog howl and thinks its Walter. He finds a dog that takes off into a haunted house. He goes through the house, terrified. Londalfa comes out of the haunted house with the teacher from earlier, and starts hitting on her. Hubie finds the dog, and tries to throw a silver bullet at it, but it eats it instead. Outside, Londolfa is called out for hitting on her, and the dog turns out to be hers. He hears Hubie, and goes in the house to scare Hubie. As he goes to scare him, he's yanked into the darkness. The mayor, officer Downy, Hubie and a few others gather and complain nothing has been done, Downy says nothing else planned is going to happen. Hubie tells them about his werewolf theory. Downy calls in the station to have someone check on Walter, when the other officer tells him Walter and Richie turned themselves in 45 minutes ago and we find out Walter and Richie are roommates at the mental hospital. Walter, who is Nick Hudson, broke out a month ago, and Richie broke out to find him. So with those two in custody, they turn on Hubie accusing him of making the people who are mean to him making them disappear. Hubie runs away, through the woods, still getting things thrown at him, when he approaches the radio station. Inside, what has sounded like a woman voice over/DJ Aurora, turns out to be Shaq. Hubie is looking for some advice, and the DJ and his wife tell him about the only other person who calls in more than him, and that he always dedicates a special song to Hubie and they said they were going to do something special for Hubie on halloween, after drinking too much chardonnay. Downy arrives and Hubie tells him Violet is the only person who is nice to him. They set up a sting.

    S:

-What time is it at the haunted house? Who does all that on halloween night

-The sliver bullet, that shit was plastic. Who would walk around with silver bullets like that?

-WTCH is a radio station from Shawano, Wisconsin

-Was the "wife" a guy or a girl?

Violet approaches and Hubie, and he immediately calls for back up. Downy calls the number who called the radio station, but the phone doesn't ring, and they find the cell phone is in Hubies house. Hubie and Violet confess their love for each other, and Hubie steals a boat for some reason. At Hubies house, he finds his mom with a glass of chardonnay. Hubie asks if hes her special someone. He sees Landolfo in the back yard, goes out and sees all the missing people. Hubies mom tells him why she did what she did, and starts adding gas to the wood. As she strikes a match and they all ask for help, Hubie remembers how all of them have been mean to him, laughed at him, all the punishment he's taken, when he remembers what Violet said about him being a hero, he slings the last bit of soup and puts out the match. The cops arrives, and they still give him shit even though he just saved them. Hubies mom tells them all off, and calls them all out...and they explain why they're all mean to him. Pressure to be cool, hair loss, lack of sexual fulfillment, fake dyslexia because he's just dumb. Hubies mom explains why she did what she did, and she yells "Frankenstein" and runs off. We also find out Walter killed the pig from early on. Hubie wishes Violet happy halloween and share a kiss through the tv. 1 year later, they kiss and the kids show their costumes for Halloween, Father Dave, Richie, Officer Downy and wolfman Walter. Hubie is shown to be the mayor with his sash, he made thermos' for the kids, as he rides to the city events, we see the kids and they are nice to Hubie. Hubie pranks them instead, and everyone is shown to be nice and wave to Hubie. Credits roll with Hubie screaming and outtakes.

    S:

-The reporter that shows up at the end is Adam Sandlers wife

-All in all, kinda funny, I like the references to other Sandler movies. I hope they do one where they bring in a bunch of other Sandler characters.

Tim Meadows Mr. Duvall then comes in to introduce Kady, and low key hits on Ms. Norbury. At lunch, she's shown eating in the bathroom. The next day she sits with Janice and Damian. The skip class and we're introduced to the Plastics, Karen, Gretchen, and Regina George, evil incarnate. A montage of people talking about Regina. Cady is given a map to survive school, with a lunch room map to help her navigate. Regina saves Cady from a guy hitting on her, and invites her to sit with the plastics for the rest of the week. She's convinced to do it, and finds her crush in math class. At lunch the next day, she begins to learn the plastic rules. She divulges the crush was Aaron Samuels, Reginas ex. She's approached to join the Matheletes, and she goes shopping with the plastics. They see Jason, Gretchen's crush, with another girl and Regina calls her mom acting like she's planned parenthood. It was Fetch.

    -S:

    -2004 Lindsay Lohan was 18

-Do you wonder if Rachel McAdams hates that she took this role? She was 26 when she shot this movie.

-In reference to the lunch map, do you think it could be made today? Asian nerds, unfriendly black hotties, etc?

The girls go to Reginas house and we meet her little sister and mom, who has an obvious boob job, and asserts there are no rules, because she's a "cool mom." In Reginas room, which was her parents room, she finds the Burn Book and accidentally has a comment about Damian added. Janis tries to convince Cady to steal it, which she refuses, and hey have an awkward encounter with Ms. Norbury. Cady is then caught in a phone attack with Regina. She starts to talk to Aaron more and is invited to a halloween party. She doesn't know about the 'slut rule' and shows up as a scary bride. Regina falsely tells Aaron some lies about Cady, simultaneously stealing him. Cady admits to hating Regina and goes to Janice and Damian, they hatch plan to take her down. Cady begins to attempt to sabotage Regina, peppermint foot cream for her face, holes cut in her shirt, and they backfire. Regina tells Cady her history with Janice. She leverages Gretchen for info. Then the talent show. Damian sings, Kevin raps, and Cady and the plastics perform to Jingle Bell Rock. Gretchen thinks Regina is mad at her, and she finally cracks. trap but she

    -S:

-it is surprising how fucking mean these girls are... Watching it objectively and as a parent.

-The whole slut halloween thing... I don't care what grade my child is in, she's not going out dressed like that while she still lives at home. What I can't see, i can't stop.

-Think girls are really this underhanded?

Cady, Janice and Damian begin to try to get Aaron to catch Regina cheating on him. Cady gives some exposition on being in the plastics vs not. She intentionally dives in math to get Aaron to tutor her, and they kiss, and Cady tells him Regina is cheating on him, and Aaron breaks up with Regina. The plan then moves on to break up the "Army of Skanks." Regina tries a dress on and she can't fit into it, and the "hot body" is gone. Ms. Norbury tells Cady she's failing math, which riles her and she rants into the burn book. Cady three way ambushes Regina, which devolves into 4 panel call back and forth, where Gretchen tells Karen the Regina says people don't like her because she's a "slut," when Karen tells Regina she doesn't want to hang out, she's told: "Boo you whore." and is hung up on. At lunch the next day, Regina is told she can't sit with them because she's wearing sweat pants, which she admits is the only thing that fits. She leaves, bumps into a large girl, and is called a fat ass. Army of Skanks is crossed off. Cady has become the queen bee, and convinces her parents to leave her for a night and she decides to throw a small get together, which isn't small. Aaron arrives and they can't find each other, then Regina arrives. Aaron and Cady talk in her room, she admits to being good and math, is caught by Regina and vomits on Aaron, who calls her a Regina clone. As he leaves, she's then caught by Damian and Janice for not coming to her art show and they have it out, and calls her a mean girl and a bitch, and she knows she's right.

    S:

-I swear, if I ever hear of my kid intentionally doing badly to spend time with a boy... ugh.

-I hate to use this term, but I hate how toxic these kids are.

Regina realizes the bars she's been eating are weight gaining and loses her mind. She adds herself to the burn book and turns it into Mr. Duvall. As he's talking to the girls, Regina is shown to be dropping copies of the burn book all through the school. As class lets out, all the girls start fighting, and Regina watches the frey. The girls have gone wild. Mr. Duvall pulls the fire alarm and all the girls are told to meet in the gym. For an attitude re-adjustment. Mr. Duvall doesn't do well, and Ms. Norbury shoots her shot and has the cliques directly address their issues. Regina asserts she's a victim and when asked if anyone feels personally victimized by Regina, everyone raises their hands, including the teachers and mr. Duvall. Ms. Norbury gives Cady a chance to own up, but she doesn't. Then everyone is supposed to write apologies and trust fall. Janice reveals the whole plan to take Regina down, she storms out of the gym with Cady following. Cady tries to explain herself, but Regina isn't hearing any of it, and as she's telling her off and telling her to shove it up her... She's hit by a bus. Cady is shown at home, and how divided she has become from her parents, and she is grounded.

    S:

-Popping the fire alarm doesn't make the sprinklers go off, only heat.

The next day, no one will speak to her, Janice and Damian moved her seat, she eats lunch in the bathroom, in math class, Ms. Norbury is being investigated for selling drugs. Cady admits to writing about Ms. Norbury in the burn book. She started apologizing, with Regina, Ms. Norbury who gives her a lot of crap, apologizes and is forgiven. There is a montage of everyone getting ready for the spring fling, and Cady is shown wearing a mathletes shirt. She is participating in a mathlete competition, while the spring dance is occuring. The competition is tied, and each team chooses the girls. As she judges her, she realizes that doesn't mean she still can't lose... She gets the answer correct and they win. Cady goes to the dance, and wins the queen title. She gives a speech, brakes the crown in pieces, and gives them out to everyone. She, Damian and Janis make up. She and Aaron make up and kiss, Ms. Norbury and Mr. Duvall are shown dancing. Reginas spine healed, and she channeled her rage into sports, because those girls weren't afraid of her, Karen used her special talent for the morning weather report, Gretchen found a new clique, Aaron went to Northwestern and they still saw each other. Girl world was at peace and if any freshmen plastics tried to change that... well, they wouldn't get hit with a bus.

    S:

-I like the feel good ending. Getting hit by a bus would probably make you re-think some life choices... BUT, everyone getting along like that? It's totally unrealistic. There will always be cliques, groups, people who embrace and reject that also; as well as people who think they're better than everyone else... But I like the idea of being able to change, grow, and learn also.
