In this episode, it is a continuation of last week's episode. today's episode I talk about change because a friend of mine came to me and told her story so I had to make this a continuation of last week's show. As you hear in the show, she made a major life change. She went from a lifetime of fighting and drama to a whole new life. She took my advice and did the things that I talk about to make a change. She told me how hard it is but it's worth it in the long run. So you'll hear her story and then I will talk about the stages of change.

    The Stages of Change

What are the stages of change model?

Five stages of change have been conceptualized for a variety of problem behaviors. The five stages of change are precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, and maintenance. Precontemplation is the stage at which there is no intention to change behavior in the foreseeable future.

    The stages of change are:

Precontemplation (Not yet acknowledging that there is a problem behavior that needs to be changed)

Contemplation (Acknowledging that there is a problem but not yet ready, sure of wanting, or lacks the confidence to make a change)

        Preparation/Determination (Getting ready to change)

        Action/Willpower (Changing behavior)

        Maintenance (Maintaining the behavior change)

    Stage One: Precontemplation

In the precontemplation stage, people are not thinking seriously about changing and are not interested in any kind of help. People in this stage tend to defend their current bad habit(s) and do not feel it is a problem. They may be defensive in the face of other people’s efforts to pressure them to change. In AA, this stage is called “denial,” but another way to describe this stage is that people just do not yet see themselves as having a problem.

    Stage Two: Contemplation

In the contemplation stage, people are on a teeter-totter, weighing the pros and cons of modifying their behavior. Although they think about the negative aspects of their bad habit and the positives associated with changing, they may doubt that the long-term benefits associated with change will outweigh the short-term costs. It might take as little as a couple of weeks or as long as a lifetime to get through the contemplation stage.

    Stage Three: Preparation/Determination

In the preparation/determination stage, people have made a commitment to make a change. Their motivation for changing is reflected by statements such as: “I’ve got to do something about this — this is serious. Something has to change. What can I do?”

This is sort of a research phase. They gather information (sometimes by reading things like this) about what they will need to do to change their behavior. Or they will check out websites, organizations, and resources that are available to help them in their attempt. Too often, people skip this stage: they try to move directly from contemplation into action and fall flat on their faces because they haven’t adequately researched or accepted what it is going to take to make this major lifestyle change.

    Stage Four: Action/Willpower

This is the stage where people are motivated to change their behavior and are actively involved in taking steps to change their bad behavior by using a variety of different techniques. This is the shortest of all the stages. The amount of time people spend in action varies. It generally lasts about 6 months, but it can literally be as short as one hour! This is a stage when people most depend on their own willpower. They are making overt efforts to change their behavior and are at the greatest risk for relapse.

Mentally, they review their commitment to themselves and develop plans to deal with both personal and external pressures that may lead to slips. They may use short-term rewards to sustain their motivation and analyze their behavior change efforts in a way that enhances their self-confidence. People in this stage also tend to be open to receiving help and are also likely to seek support from others (a very important element).

Hopefully, people will then move to:

    Stage Five: Maintenance

Maintenance involves being able to successfully avoid any temptations to return to the bad habit. The goal of the maintenance stage is to maintain the new status quo. People in this stage tend to remind themselves of how much progress they have made. People in maintenance constantly reformulate the rules of their lives and are acquiring new skills to deal with life and avoid relapse. They are able to anticipate the situations in which a relapse could occur and prepare coping strategies in advance.

They remain aware that what they are striving for is personally worthwhile and meaningful. They are patient with themselves and recognize that it often takes a while to let go of old behavior patterns and practice new ones until they are second nature to them. Even though they may have thoughts of returning to their old bad habits, they resist the temptation and stay on track.

Techniques to help you progress through your change plan.

As you progress through your own stages of change, it can be helpful to re-evaluate your progress in moving up and down through these stages. (Even in the course of one day, you may go through several different stages of change). And remember: it is normal and natural to regress, to attain one stage only to fall back to a previous stage. This is just a normal part of making changes in your behavior.

Six steps to being more disciplined.

Discipline is not something you're born with, it's something you create over time. It's the things that you do to create the life that you want. It's the things that you do to become healthier and wealthier. It's not easy but over time your discipline becomes a habit.

You get an idea in your head of what you want to do or become, and then you try to do it, it’s hard at first so most people give up. This is where you build up that discipline to do the thing because the results are worth more than the task itself. The results you find come with time but if you stick with it you will achieve your goals. It's the little winds that you have that motivate you to keep going and with every little win you're going towards that big win. It's the way that I live my life with constant and never-ending improvement. Those small things that grow to the big things.

You may think of all the things that you want to accomplish but you seem to never accomplish your goals. You're not alone, almost everybody is like this. It's the few that take the initial steps and stick with it that win, no matter what you're doing. You might even need an accountability partner to help you stay on track. You're not alone, there are people out there that can help you. When dealing with discipline you don't need discipline for the easy things in life. You don't tell yourself I'm really going to push myself to sit down and do nothing and watch TV and eat chips. Or you don't tell yourself I'm going to really get disciplined and sit in front of Facebook for hours and hours. It's the things you want to do to make a change that becomes your struggle because it is not hard to change it's hard to make the decision to start the change. The things that you need to do the things that you want or tell yourself you must do are always the hard things that you need discipline for. But you'll find that once you change your thought process and start doing things, become more disciplined, it'll come easy with time.

Rob Dial came up with a list that is worth thinking about.

    1st Finish everything.

Finish everything, you're constantly doing small things, but you rarely finish them. A good example is your To Do List. You may finish some things on there but there's always one or two things that carry over to the next day. Take off these small things that you can do and actually finish. A couple of good examples is when you eat dinner when you're finished don't just put your dishes in the sink, actually wash the dishes right away and put them away. When you come home and you take off your coat don't just throw it on the sofa, hang it up where it goes. The same thing with your shoes when you take off your shoes have a designated spot that you put them in. A lot of productivity coaches mention making your bed when you get up in the morning. When you step out of bed first thing you should do is turn around and make your bed. These are simple tasks that'll just make you feel better, it gives you that small win that will help you motivate yourself to do better.

    2. Plan Ahead

Another good way to start getting more disciplined is to plan ahead. By planning things out you make it easier on yourself and you accomplish more. Start by planning out your meals. The easiest way to do this is to figure out what you want to eat for the week and make a list. Then once you get the stuff on the list you can plan out each meal for the day. The best and most effective way is to take each meal and put it in a separate container for the week. Get yourself some Bentgo Prep boxes.  And Sunday night prep out your whole meals for the week. This makes life so much simpler because you don't have to think about it. You have your week planned out. It makes your day so much simpler. Take the time and plan out the difficult things that you have to do. It's just like going back to your To Do List by making a plan you'll know what to do and you will accomplish it.

3 Design your Environment to help you.

Remove the distractions from the area. Clean up And organize your work area. Brighten your area up that you are working in if it's too dark you will do two things you'll put more strain on your eyes and having a darker area lowers your focus on the task. Move all the things out of your area that will distract you. This may even come down to closing your blinds or curtains so you're not looking outside all the time. You want to design your work area so you can focus on the task at hand. If you're trying to lose weight or eat healthier remove all the bad foods from your kitchen. Get rid of the food and pop that will bring you down or tempt you to stop doing what you're doing and eat that bag of chips. If one of your goals is to slow down or stop your drinking get the alcohol out of your house, same goes with smoking Or not exercising. If you want to start exercising on a regular basis have a designated area in your house to work out that is free of clutter. If you go to work out and you have to move stuff out of the way you'll have a tendency not to work out. This will even extend to the people in your life that are not there to motivate and help you grow. Move them out of your environment.

    4 Remove the distractions.

Put all your notifications on silent. Turn off Facebook. Put your phone in a completely different room. If you have kids and you want to get something done tell them to leave you alone. Facebook and social media is the biggest waste of time right now. It is hard to stop the endless scrolling because we are training our brains to crave it just like a drug. If you have an office, you work in shut the door. Remove any distractions from the room. This is where you can also try the technique of setting a timer but don't let this be a distraction also.

    5 make Adjustments.

You're not alone when it comes to staying on track. You're going to mess up, you're going to not finish some of these projects. But as you go you can make adjustments to whatever you're doing so that you can finish them. People mess up all the time but the important thing is to one learn from your mistakes and know how to change so that you can do the right thing. When you do mess up something you're going to give yourself a guilt trip, don't get emotional about it. Don't beat yourself up. But using this has been a great learning experience and just do something a little different so it becomes a small win. Then just make an adjustment or a mental thought, for example if you find yourself going off task and jumping on Facebook or looking at your phone tell yourself to stop and just get back on track. As you do this it will get easier and easier. Just stop and think “OK what can I do to stop doing the distraction?” And make that adjustment. It could be as simple as turning off that notification bell for not even having Facebook open on your computer. Sometimes people get distracted by just their thoughts. If this happens to you could just write it down on your notepad to think about at a later time. And go right back to what you were doing. The important thing is to acknowledge and make that adjustment.

    6 Reward yourself.

This is one of the most important things to do. You have to reward yourself somehow. But you also have to structure it so that you're not causing the rewards to be a distraction. A good example is if you're addicted to chips and you constantly are thinking about going into the kitchen and getting a handful of chips. You can tell yourself when I'm done with this task, I will reward myself by having some chips. This goes back to the same thing as when you're trying to get out of debt. Whenever you pay off that debt you have to give yourself a small reward. This can be anything from standing up and cheering to even printing out certificates on your computer. Some people reward themselves with candy, when I finish this one task, I'm going to give myself one piece of candy. Now this may not help if you're trying to lose weight. You might reward yourself by putting a big star on your weight loss progress chart. Anything you do or anything you want to accomplish comes down to being a mental thing. Your brain is always trying to get out of pain and into pleasure if you reward yourself, you're moving closer to those pleasure points. People that are on strict diets often give themselves a cheat day. This is a day where they will eat the things that they're not supposed to eat while they're losing weight or getting healthier. One thing you'll have to be careful of is not to reward yourself every single day and fall back into that same habit of eating unhealthy foods. You will find that you will start eating healthier on a regular basis even on your cheat day. But the bottom line is you have to reward yourself or whatever you're doing becomes a chore and you lose the discipline of accomplishing your task.

New Note Taking Solution that Saves Time and Increases Your Productivity | Ep. 104

Resourceful entrepreneurs and business owners are always looking for ways to save time and increase productivity.

Note taking saves us time and and also costs us time, time that we can't ever get back.

It saves us time because we record information we need and want to retain...

    It costs us time because:

    1) it can be hard to find the note we know we have, but can't find, easily or quickly when we really need it.

    2) it's hard to share notes with others. We have to take a picture then sent it to ourselves and then email it or worse scan it and then send it.

I developed a note taking system and used it for over a decade, but I still had trouble finding notes and sharing them.

I found the best note taking solution so far, have been testing it for over four months and lay the whole thing out for you in this episode.

And yes, it saves time and increases your productivity!

Mixing Side-hustle Tasks With Your Daily Job - Overlap Benefits

Mixing Side-hustle Tasks With Your Daily Job - Overlap Benefits

Time is arguably our most valuable resource.  We can not buy extra time. We can only spend it as wisely as possible.  That means we need to be mindful of the cost of our daily tasks for getting better.  Fortunately, that time is not a loss.  We can plan out our daily steps to improve in ways that allow us to get more done with little or no additional time spent.  One way is mixing side-hustle tasks with your regular job.

Killing Two Birds with One Stone

We have examined how our side-hustle work and a daily job can overlap.  Those tasks we do to improve may help our career while our day job can provide some experience that translates to a side-hustle.  These can even overlap when you focus on mixing side-hustle tasks with your daily job.  Sometimes the overlap will also be a one-to-one mix-in.

    Fill Dead Time

The approach for mixing side-hustle tasks with your daily job is through the use of "dead time."  There are things we do each day that require us to wait for a while.  This waiting goes beyond things like waiting in line at a store or restaurant.  We have meetings that start late, downloads, and uploads that need to complete, over even reports to run.  All of these tasks can take minutes or longer and provide opportunities to use that time wisely.  I do not want to imply this sort of micro-filling your time is easy, but it can be done if you plan properly.

    The Cost of Switching Gears

The most difficult challenge in mixing side-hustle tasks with your daily job is in finding large enough granules of time.  There is a cost to mentally switch gears even from reviewing reports to reading a blog article.  You probably need at least ten to fifteen-minute blocks of time to be able to fill in some gaps.  The good news is that modern operating systems and tools make it easy to keep something up in the background so you can switch to it quickly.  You can use these little chunks of "free time" to do things ranging from entering your latest expenses to building a new application.  Just make sure you avoid getting carried away.

Episode Challenge: Review your daily tasks and look for opportunities to automate and free up a little more time.

Read more about advancing your career.

WHY simple WINS: Escape the Complexity Trap and Get to Work That Matters with Lisa Bodell

WHY simple WINS: Escape the Complexity Trap and Get to Work That Matters with Lisa Bodell

Imagine what you could do with the time you spend writing emails every day.

Complexity is killing companies' ability to innovate and adapt, and simplicity is fast becoming the competitive advantage of our time.

Our guest today helps leaders and their teams move beyond the feelings of frustration and futility that come with so much unproductive work in today's corporate world to create a corporate culture where valuable, essential, meaningful work is the norm.

By learning how to eliminate redundancies, communicate with clarity, and make simplification a habit, individuals and companies can begin to recognise which activities are time-sucks and which create lasting value.

Simplification is a skill that's available to us all, yet very few leaders use it.

Simplification is the right thing to do--for our customers, for our company, and for each other.

Operating with simplification as our core business model will make it easier to be respectful of each other's time.

Simplification drives culture, and culture in turn drives employee engagement, customer relations, and overall productivity.
