Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 (2023) - "Living For The Cruise" Series

It has finally arrived!  Not the long-awaited latest entry in the long-running Mission Impossible franchise but the concluding episode of our ongoing series focusing on the filmography of Thomas Mapother III....otherwise known as Tom Cruise.

Cruise has returned once again playing IMF super-agent Ethan Hunt and returning alongside him are his fellow team-members played by Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Rebecca Ferguson.   Also joining the series for the first time are new characters played by Esai Morales, Hayley Atwell, and Pom Kliementieff among others.  And the mission this time?  Hunt and crew have to take on a mysterious new global threat....known as The Entity.  You can also bet that there will plenty of exciting new action along the way....Expect The Impossible!

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011) - "Living For The Cruise" Series

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011) - "Living For The Cruise" Series

Our ongoing series of reviews of Tom Cruise vehicles leading up to Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 is almost over with the release of that long-awaited sequel next month.  So what better time to revisit what many consider to be THE seminal entry of the franchise?  By the time this movie was released in late 2011, Cruise's star had faded somewhat as had the demand for another Mission Impossible sequel after the disappointing box office of Mission Impossible III in 2006.

But something was different this time....for one thing, this was the live action feature directorial debut of Brad Bird who over the previous 15 years had directed some of our most beloved animated films including The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and The Iron Giant.  Also there was less focus on the personal life of Cruise's protagonist Ethan Hunt and more focus placed on the rest of the TEAM - the cast for this one included Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, and Paula Patton.  We get to know them a bit more than previous entries.  And.....the movie was released initially in IMAX highlighting some seemingly jaw-dropping stunts featuring The Cruise Missile seemingly risking his life this time around.  So our mission - should we choose to accept it - will be to determine just what made THIS sequel so special almost 14 years ago.....

The Firm (1993) - "Living For The Cruise" Series

The Firm (1993) - "Living For The Cruise" Series

Our ongoing series of notable Tom Cruise vehicles from different eras continues, all leading to the release of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part I coming this July.   The next entry in this series focuses on one of the most successful thrillers of the '90's which is approaching its 30th Anniversary - it also happens to be one Cruise's biggest hits but for some reason, it doesn't receive nearly as much ongoing discussion as several of his other blockbusters like Jerry Maguire, Top Gun, or A Few Good Men.  Could it be because it was SUCH a dense movie geared towards grown-ups?

Not sure but the pedigree was there - it's an adaptation of the best-selling John Grisham novel of the same name and is directed by the late, great Sydney Pollack (Three Days of the Condor, Tootsie).  Cruise stars as Mitch McDeere, a hot young tax attorney just graduating law school who is being courted by big-time law firms from all over the country but chooses one located at a smaller film in Memphis.  He moves there with his wife played by Jeanne Tripplehorn and starts to gradually realize that not everything going on at the film might be legit....and trouble ensues. :o The stacked cast includes Gene Hackman, Hal Holbrook, David Straithard, Ed Harris, Wilford Brimley, and Holly Hunter.  Apparently NO ONE ever leaves this film alive.....let's find out why. :o

See below for links to two different short funny videos examining one of this film's most memorable scenes. :)

The Color of Money (1986) - "Living For The Cruise" Series

The Color of Money (1986) - "Living For The Cruise" Series

What happens when you hire one legendary TOP-tier movie star (Paul Newman) returning to play a character he played once before 25 years prior (Fast Eddie Felson in 1961's The Hustler)....pair him up with one giant up-and-coming movie star (Tom Cruise)....and then hire possibly THE greatest American filmmaker (Martin Scorcese) of the past 50 years to direct??

Well the result might very well be an excellent road movie/sports drama all set within the world of competitive billiards.  If nothing else, it might be worth watching just to see Cruise learn the ropes from Newman....or DOES he?  Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, John Turturro, Helen Shaver, and Forest Whitaker also round out the cast.

Collateral (2004) - "Living For The Cruise" Series

Collateral (2004) - "Living For The Cruise" Series

Our ongoing series of notable Tom Cruise vehicles from different eras continues, all leading to the release of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part I coming this July.  This particular episode focuses on a time in the early '2000's when Cruise was both considered one of the biggest movie stars in the world AND still chasing interesting parts with top-flight directors....this was his first and only collaboration with the legendary Michael Mann who had just recently directed seminal films like Heat and The Insider.  Cruise plays an elite hit-man on a one night mission to assassinate six targets in six different areas of Los Angeles....and for transportation, he enlists Jamie Foxx' Max who drives a taxi but aspires to more.  He also never envisioned himself driving an assassin around for the night nor does he condone murder - Max is also of course scared for his OWN life which is where the story derives much of its tension.

And what results is an elegantly shot night-time thriller as we follow both Vincent and Max to various locations to meet various characters with an extensive cast that also includes Jada Pinkett-Smith, Mark Ruffalo, Javier Bardem, and Bruce McGill.  Let's find out where the night takes us.....

    Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

    Top Gun: Maverick (2022)

He still feels the need, the need for speed!  Maverick (Tom Cruise) is back after more than 36 years – he’s still toiling with the Navy as a Captain and still likes flying jets.  He has now been called back to the Top Gun academy at Miramar by his superiors….to train a NEW crop of flyers for a top secret mission.  Those new flyers include various characters with various call-signs including Hangman, Phoenix, Coyote, and…..Rooster (Miles Teller) who is actually the son of Goose, which was his best friend who died during a training exercise in the first movie.  Yes this is indeed a DIRECT sequel to the 1986 smash Top Gun but it’s so much more than just a sequel. 😊 Joseph Kosinski (Tron Legacy) directs this aerial adventure also starring Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Charles Parnell, Glenn Powell, and Ed Harris.
