64-Jess Higgins Kelley - Hydration: Quenching Your Curiosity on the Impact of Water

Water seems like a simple topic, right?  Not so fast!  There is quite a lot to know about the water we drink and the water we use in our daily lives.

Water is a key component of life.  Every living organism must have water to survive.  Today we jump into the deep end of water with Jess Higgins Kelley, a Master Nutrition Therapist and Oncology Nutrition Consultant.  Jess truly takes a deep dive into water and the importance of hydration for our overall health.

Jess has something for everyone today!  You won't want to miss all the nuggets of information about water including:

    •  water as the master nutrient,
    • hydration for various health conditions,
    • the importance of water quality,
    • electrolytes and why they matter,
    • and so much more!

    Note from Jess:
Carbonated vs Non-Carbonated Water and Hydration Status.
There are currently no studies showing both intracellular and extracellular hydration status when comparing carbonated vs non carbonated water. Intracellular hydration is more important to mitochondrial function than external. Because of this, currently it is widely accepted that both are equally hydrating. However, since we practice ancestral nutrition, we know that humans didn’t add carbonation = carbonic acid a weak acid, to water until about 100 years ago. It also REALLY depends on the sparkling water/carbonated water source. In general, plain mineral waters in glass are excellent. Those with any artificial or natural flavors, sugars, etc should be avoided. All that said, many people do not have access to drinking water AT ALL so something is better than nothing!!!!

B-Vitamins and Trace Minerals in Transition Cow Nutrition

B-Vitamins and Trace Minerals in Transition Cow Nutrition

    Timestamps and Summary

    Vicky Brisson (02:24)
Can you please explain why and how cows may benefit from an increased supply of B vitamins?

    Dr. Mélissa Duplessis
I'm going to focus on two B vitamins, folate and vitamin B12, as these two vitamins have been extensively studied by our research group […]

Christiane Girard, who has tremendously increased the knowledge on B vitamins in dairy cows, demonstrated that plasma folate and vitamin B12 concentrations were at their lowest at calving and in early lactation, respectively.

[…] a few studies were conducted in order to evaluate the effects of supplementation in folic acid and vitamin B12 during the transition period and in early lactation on dairy cows’ health and performance. […] some showed a substantial increase in milk yield without affecting dry matter intake and plasma indicators of reserve mobilization. And some showed a decrease in plasma indicators of reserve mobilization without affecting dry matter intake and milk yield. […]

    Vicky Brisson (05:19)
From a practical perspective, how can we ensure that the cows actually receive an adequate increased supply of B vitamins?

    Dr. Mélissa Duplessis
One way is indeed to supplement B vitamins to the animals. Also, previous studies demonstrated that ruminal synthesis of B vitamins is affected by the cow diet and dry matter intake. Thus, it can be suggested that if ruminal synthesis is greater, this will benefit the cow as more B vitamins are available for absorption. Now, can we formulate a diet that optimizes B vitamin ruminal synthesis? It's a great question. […]

    Vicky Brisson (06:53)
Your recently published papers collected data on mineral nutrition. Can you share with our audience what were the main findings of your study?

    Dr. Mélissa Duplessis
We collected data on 100 Eastern Canadian dairy herds in order to compare dietary trace minerals in commercial settings to NRC recommendations. […]

[…] we observed that cobalt was fed at 405% over the recommendation, copper at 52% over the recommendation, manganese at 372 percent over the recommendation, and for zinc, it was 65% over the recommendation. This is important to note that these data represent the median, meaning that 50% of dairy herds were well above that. […]

    Vicky Brisson (08:51)
How would a nutritionist use this knowledge to better balance minerals in their rations?

    Dr. Mélissa Duplessis
First of all, forages are not routinely analyzed for trace mineral concentrations due to analysis constraints. Also, absorption coefficients of trace minerals are low. In a recent […], we obtained that more than 60% of nutritionists had intentionally formulated diets above trace mineral recommendations to ensure cow health and optimized reproduction performance. However, this is not clear in the literature that overfeeding trace minerals actually has benefits on cow health and reproduction. […]

    Vicky Brisson (10:55)
Can you explain to our audience what is a living lab?

    Dr. Mélissa Duplessis (11:03)
Living labs are open innovation ecosystems in real-life environments. […] Prior to the start of the project, producers and researchers should meet and discuss to create a sustainable project.

    Vicky Brisson (11:45)
You recently concluded a project using the Living Lab approach, can you share what you did and what you learned so far?

From newborn to one year of age, young horses are known as foals. This first year of life is instrumental in determining how a horse’s future will play out, and poor nutrition can be devastating in a number of different ways.

During this episode, Dr. Stephen Duren, PhD. equine nutrition specialist, joins us for a discussion about some of the most important nutritional elements of a horse’s diet. From protein to zinc, to the “big two” nutrients (i.e. calcium and phosphorus),

Dr. Duren explains the importance of each and the issues that can arise if a foal receives more or less than the optimal amount. You will also learn about the digestive system of foals, when foals should be started on solids, and how the diet of a pregnant mare impacts the fetus.

    Key Points from This Episode:

    • The definition of a foal
    • Where you can access a comprehensive list of nutrients for horses
    • Nutrients that are critical for foal growth
    • Symptoms of nutrient deficiency in foals
    • The dangers of overfeeding a foal
    • How to support a foal whose mother is not producing enough milk
    • The age at which foals should start consuming hay and concentrates
    • Problems that arise due to a lack of protein
    • Why calcium and phosphorus are known as the “big two”
    • The importance of getting the calcium-phosphorus ratio right
    • How zinc impacts foal growth
    • The effects of inadequate levels of copper in a foal’s diet
    • What a foal’s digestive system looks like
    • How the diet of a pregnant mare will affect the foal after birth
    • The growth stages that a foal goes through during the first year of life
    • How your goals for the foal should determine their nutrition management plan
    • The benefits of a smooth growth curve
    • How to minimize weight issues when a foal is weaned off his mother’s milk
    • Advice on what to feed a growing foal

Beef nutrition program features 100% organic trace minerals

A great nutrition program is foundational to success in livestock production, and mineral supplementation is a big part of proper nutrition. One company says it has pioneered a unique approach to mineral supplementation that will lead to improved daily gains and profitability.

Neil Bumgarner is the Director of Sales for Ridley Block Operations, an Alltech Company, and manager of the Blueprint animal nutrition program. Since graduating from West Virginia University, Neil has spent almost 17 years in plant operations, sales, and sales leadership in the animal nutrition business throughout the eastern half of the US.  Neil, his wife Blair, and their two young sons also own Mountaineer Meadows Farm in Point Pleasant WV, a 100-cow Angus seedstock operation.

In this episode, Bumgarner discusses Alltech's new Blueprint animal nutrition program, and why a program built around 100% organic trace minerals is a major step forward in a beef supplementation program.

This episode is sponsored by Alltech, makers of the new Blueprint animal nutrition program. Blueprint products contain 100% organic trace minerals made from the highest quality, most research-proven trace minerals available.
