Alex Diamond, David Kenny, and John McDaniel heard that the long-running network sitcom Family Matters ends with side character Steve Urkel going to space. And the best way to figure out how that happened - obviously - is to watch the last episode first and make our way backwards through nearly ten years of television.

Whether it's movies, music, fashions, or really anything else, Chris is a passionate expert about the 1980s.  He talked to me about the lessons we can take from some of your favorite movies from the 80s like "Coming to America," "The Outsiders," "The Breakfast Club," "Pretty in Pink" and so much more!  We also got to talk about which fashions need to NOT come back from the 80s and which movies from the decade are overrated and underrated.  I had SO MUCH FUN talking with him, it was like being with an old friend who is incredibly engaging and knowledgeable.  I really think you will enjoy this episode!

In Memoriam (Ray Liotta): Heartbreakers / Top 5 Con-Artist Movies

Our second In Memoriam episode focuses on Ray Liotta. Obviously we're doing Goodfellas right? Nope, While we LOVE that movie, we decided to keep it light on focus on a more underappreciated role in the 2001 con movie Heartbreakers. Liotta is hilarious alongside Sigourney Weaver, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Gene Hackman, Jason Lee, and others. While his performance definitely holds up, what about the movie overall? Listen to find out if it was as good as we remembered.

Since Sigourney and Jennifer play mother-daughter con-women. we close this episode with our lists of favorite movies about con-artists. Is Heartbreakers good enough? How about a couple Jamie Lee Curtis classics: Trading Places and A Fish Called Wanda?  Tune in now to find out!

    Facing My Addiction

    Facing My Addiction

In one of the most raw, honest episodes of TGAWG yet, I talk with TV personality, interior designer and life stylist Lauren Makk.

I met Lauren back in 2015 when I was working on a daytime syndicated TV show called Fablife. Lauren, one of the co-hosts and resident interior designer, stood out to me at the time as someone who is very much, "what you see is what you get," something I definitely admire, especially in that industry.  Six plus years later, she's still that way.

    In this episode, Lauren shares:

    • Her journey to sobriety, complete with twists and turns.
    • What life looked like when she was drinking. The excruciatingly painful moment when she knew something needed to change.
    • And what she's learned about herself in the one year since putting down the  bottle.

    Resources:
    Alcoholics Anonymous
    Booze-Free Craft Cocktails
    (More to come!)

About Lauren: Lauren Makk is an Interior Designer, Life Stylist, and popular TV Host seen on the Emmy Award winning Trading Spaces on TLC, Home Made Simple for the Oprah Winfrey Network, and Big Block Overhaul for HGTV. Lauren has also starred alongside Tyra Banks, Chrissy Teigen and Joe Zee as she co-hosted the hit talk show “FAB Life”, for ABC. More recently, Lauren has paved a way for a new generation of design leaders and makers as she was cast as judge on “Shop Class”, a kids design completion show on Disney + and “Design Star: Next Gen” for Discovery + - both streaming now.

A native of Oklahoma City, Lauren has lived everywhere from Philly to Honolulu, building businesses and creating design magic. More recently, Lauren has gotten married to the love of her life -Alvin Lozano, and moved to Nashville where they are raising their blended family of 5.

Never one to shy away from personal topics, Lauren has been candid about her major weight losses (and gains), and is coming clean about getting cleaner. Today Lauren is celebrating a full year of sobriety.

Caring for Our Aging Parents w/ Brandee Evans & Mary Hulme

There will come a time when the tables turn and suddenly the parent becomes the child and the child is caring for the parent. Actress Brandee Evans shares her very personal story of taking care of her mother who has multiple sclerosis. She’s on the hit show P-Valley now, but she didn’t have a job when her mother came to live with her in Los Angeles. Then Ali taps the expertise of Mary Hulme, a geriatric specialist who actually helped Ali and her siblings as they were navigating changes with their mother. Mary talks about how siblings can work together, the importance of maintaining dignity and why safety shouldn’t necessarily be the main consideration.

If you have questions or guest suggestions, Ali would love to hear from you. Call or text her at (323) 364-6356. Or email go-ask-ali-podcast-at-gmail.com. (No dashes)

    Trading Places (1983)

    Trading Places (1983)

Eddie Murphy plays the con-man Billy Ray Valentine and Dan Ackroyd plays a spoiled investment banker Lewis Winthorp – one is barely making it while the other is living VERY comfortably...

Let's see what happens when they…..trade places! 😉

Of course, they’re not doing this on their own – it’s all plotted by the evil and powerful Duke brothers played by Ralph Bellamy and Don Ameche who also get help along the way from Denholm Elliott as a wise live-in butler and Jamie Lee Curtis as a hooker with a heart of gold.

If it all sounds silly and cliched, don’t worry because it’s not – as directed by John Landis, this was one of the smartest comedies of the ’80s featuring two comedic stars at the height of their careers.

The “Trading Places” Episode pt2 (Billy Ray Valentine.. Capricorn) f/ Guest: Jim Search

Merry New Year.. This is Part 1 of the Trading Places episode. I recorded this episode with Comedian Jim Search aka "The Podfather" who is known in these streets for having 7-8 of the dopest podcasts known on earth.  We talked about this classic movie in detail from the perspective of Billy Ray Valentine...Capricorn. We also talked about the inauthentic use of "jive turkey" & "sucker" being written for african american actors back then; How fast Louis Winthrope III's life crumbled after a day of trading places with Billy Ray Valentine; And we questioned the racial undertones of this hilarious movies. Did it age well?? Do you throw the baby out with the bathwater because of dated material? Can you separate art from artist?
