Ukonwa Ojo (fmr. Amazon Prime Video & Studios) | The Math and the Magic

As of this summer, Ukonwa Kuzi-Orizu Ojo exited her role as Global Chief Marketing Officer for Amazon Prime Video & Studios. There, she worked on marketing strategies for the series Being the Ricardos, The Boys, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and the film Coming 2 America.

When she was 15 years old, Ukonwa moved from Nigeria to the US and eventually earned an MBA from the prestigious Kellogg School at Northwestern. Prior to joining Amazon, she served as CMO at MAC Cosmetics and Coty’s consumer beauty portfolio, which includes CoverGirl, Clairol and Sally Hansen.

Recorded from this year's Deloitte University's Next Generation Academy, Ukonwa discusses her journey from Nigeria to the US and the principles that make for great leadership and team building. She stresses how important a diverse team is and points to specific wins she's had that exemplify that idea.

Ruth E. Carter Teaches Us How To Dress Like Royalty

Two months into 2021, and we're still at home, but we know we're not the only ones. At least we have streaming, food delivery, and podcasts (wink, wink) to keep us company. Speaking of streaming...lately, our Friday nights have been spent watching 90's and early 00's re-runs. That's why we're beyond excited for the return of Coming to America (available on Amazon Prime March 5th). It's the best of both worlds - old-school nostalgia and new content for the weekend.

To get us in a regal state of mind, Academy Award-Winning Costume Designer, Ruth E. Carter, stopped by (virtually of course), to give Cori and Charli some tips, and share anecdotes about her 30-plus year career, styling some of our favorite celebrities for the most iconic movies.

NOTE: This episode is sponsored by Crown Royal

BEER SUMMIT FILM SCHOOL - "MURPHY'S LAW": A SITDOWN WITH WRITER / DIRECTOR TAB MURPHY

BEER SUMMIT FILM SCHOOL - "MURPHY'S LAW": A SITDOWN WITH WRITER / DIRECTOR TAB MURPHY

Everyone knows Tab Murphy, ... even if they don't immediately know his name. The Oscar-nominated writer behind GORILLAS IN THE MIST, Disney's THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, ATLANTIS, TARZAN and BROTHER BEAR, critically acclaimed D.C. actioners such as BATMAN: YEAR ONE, BATMAN / SUPERMAN: APOCALYPSE, and Warner's much loved 2011 THUNDERCATS revival (see, told 'ya you knew him!) ... . Well, he's something of a film industry rarity. Weaned on classic horror, 60s era TV, 70s Drive-in triple bills and an avalanche of old-school adventure novels, his inspiration springs from venerable staples such as Edgar Rice Burroughs and Sergio Leone, but he's got an inate facility to translate that ageless vibe into new era cinema classics for an all new generation. In this regard there is perhaps no greater example of "Murphy's Law" than Tab's underrated 1995 modern day lost civilization saga - and directorial debut - LAST OF THE DOGMEN starring Tom Berenger and Barbara Hershey. Kinda / sorta "LOST HORIZON meets DANCES WITH WOLVES", he and producer Joel Michaels are presently preparing a new "Director's Edition" Blu-ray set for release next year. And in what proves perfect timing we've managed a sitdown with Tab which falls somewhere between a film school guest professorship ... and a neighborhood watering hole beer summit between movie geeks! ... wherein we candidly dive into his background and earliest creative endeavors, how he went from late night 7/11 clerk to much-sought-after screenwriter, his (at times topsy-turvy) experiences on films such as GORILLAS IN THE MIST and his involvement in the famous Art Buchwald / COMING TO AMERICA case, his writing and directing DOGMEN, the animated films and much more. So much more in fact, we had to break this one up into two parts - with Part 1 focusing mostly on the live action films and Pt. 2 on his voluminous output in animation. Crack one open, light 'em if you got 'em, and sit back and chill, and learn and enjoy as "Murphy's Law" takes on a whole new (much more positive) meaning.
