    Becoming More Balanced without Stirrups

    Becoming More Balanced without Stirrups

There is a point in every rider's journey where balance becomes less about staying on and more about increasing overall effectiveness. However, in order to positively influence the horse, the rider needs to begin working on developing better balance.

I feel that one of the best ways to do this is by developing independent aids.  Independent from both the influence of each other's movement.  And independent from any potential 'speed wobbles' our horse might experience when working together.

So, all of that being said, becoming more independent through your body will encourage better balance overall; for you and your horse. For the month of August 2022 inside of Connection, we are focusing on "Developing Independent Aids While Riding". If you want step-by-step riding plans to help you achieve this, make sure you join Connection and check out August 2022's training

    Riding & Filming in Sicily

    Riding & Filming in Sicily

And we are continuing with our mini series about Sicily, a prime horse riding and tourist destination. Today I am talking with Christina Heß from the blog Herzenspferd who recently rode and filmed a travel documentary in Sicily. 18 days she rode through different regions of the island and documented her rides, the landscape, the region and the people and their culture. Additionally she presented Sicily's unique horse culture and its three indigenous horse breeds.

    Hoof Protection for Trail Horses

    Hoof Protection for Trail Horses

In today's episode Ute talks with Nina Sepp, bare-hoof trimmer and hoof technician from Germany. Nina tells us how to keep the hooves of our horses healthy and sound and what kind of alternatives are there to iron horse shoes which are better and more efficient for trail horses. Because at the end of the day, a horse is only as good as its hooves!

The Making of a Trail Horse

The Making of a Trail Horse

People often say "It's just a trail horse!" which implies that a trail horse is a horse which can only walk straight and nothing else. It could not be further from the truth. A good trail horse is light and responsive and a good trail horse is confident and trusts in its rider. But above all, a good trail horse is bomb-proof. Today I am talking about my experiences training young horses for the trail and how to get them bomb proof!

3 Exercises to Ride While Out On the Trail to Develop Your Horse

3 Exercises to Ride While Out On the Trail to Develop Your Horse

There is an energy that we experience when we are out on the trail with our horses. It can feel like an added enthusiasm from both horse and rider.  And, maybe, blended with the thought of unlimited possibilities.

Whatever the reason for it, as riders we can begin to use this energy to develop our horse's training and our own riding skills.

Things that were perhaps feeling flat, or sticky when working on them in the arena become more fluid.  And points in the session when we were struggling to maintain flow, can be transformed when we work on them while out on the trail.

Here are 3 exercises you can try with your horse the next time you're out of the arena and on the trail.

No Arena? No Problem... Riding Your Horse in Open Spaces and Still Improving

Not having a designated space to ride in, like an arena, can often feel like a big disadvantage.  If you have been riding in an open field or been confined to roads for any length of time, you'll probably know what I mean! However, while an arena does help with some aspects of riding, having no arena will also force you to think outside of the box.

And this literal 'out of the box' thinking when applied to your schooling can often be a big plus when it comes to riding your horse as well...

Arenas are wonderful to ride in, the surface is prepared for optimal performance, the rails and letters remove any guesswork when it comes to accuracy, shapes, and sizes.  The centre line is exactly that - the centre line of the arena.  X is always at the same place...

Having an arena allows you to focus entirely on the actual riding end of things - or does it?

While many riders see having no arena as a massive drawback and negative aspect of riding, there are a similar number of riders who will happily tell you the opposite.  In fact, they often chat to anyone who will listen about how their riding improved tenfold once they got out of the arena; whether by choice or necessity.

    Coaches' Corner: Cross Training

    Coaches' Corner: Cross Training

Season 2, Episode Six is a Coaches' Corner with Amy Skinner in North Carolina.

Here, Jec and Amy visit about cross training. It ties into our last episode in which we discussed what horses and riders need to know. It comes down to the need to always expand our comfort zones. As Randy Rieman told me, if you’re not expanding your comfort zone, you are shrinking it. Dearest listener and reader, think about it. I really think this idea has merit. And not just for horse work, but for life. Expanding our comfort zones, facing fears, having confidence or building confidence in yourself and your horse surely has a lot to do with cross training.

There are ways to tackle various impediments or hurdles to better horse work. Here are a few:

    Ask for help

Avoid foreseeable pitfalls (as mentioned and for example, riding in big groups or riding with people who cannot support you if you need help is avoidable)

Or, if you’re a trail rider, maybe check out Jec’s books for some exercises to make arena work more engaging. Katrin Silva’s Dressage for All of Us has ideas, too.

If, in contrast, you’re hitting the trail and you find that worrisome or boring, there are tons of ways to get busy and give your horses tasks that will challenge both of you and keep you partnered up rather than checked out.

If you’re new to the trail, connect with riders who have some understanding of trail riding and the etiquette around it – for instance, ya don’t ride off when someone is stepping up into the saddle. If you are riding through gates, trade off opening and closing them.

    Riding Mules in Peru

    Riding Mules in Peru

Today, our podcast travels to Peru to talk about a very interesting topic: Mules. Sometimes called "the better horse", mules are definitely different from our more common equine friends and they require a bit more care in riding and handling. They reward you with an exceptional strength, sure-footedness and hardiness on the trail. I am talking with Kyd Campbell who rides and trains mules in Peru. She is the perfect person to tell us all about mules and hinnies, their character and their training.

Road Safety, trail riding with your horses can be fun yet scary.  Today's episode takes us down the road literally. We provide some tips and advice on how to safely ride down the road or across the road with your horse.  Knowing road safety will make your trail ride a much safer and enjoyable trip.  The phrase Be Seen to Be safe should be your mantra while out on the road.  Horses like bikes and cars have to share the road, so know the rules of your area before you head out.

Where to Next? Horse Destination Scotland

Today we are visiting Scotland, Land of Glens, Lochs and Castles! Scotland is horse country with four native horse and pony breeds and plenty of great trail riding countryside. Besides horse riding Scotland offers a lot of other activities, sightseeing and fun for the whole family. Trail Riding With Your Dog

    Trail Riding With Your Dog

On today's episode Ute talks with Sherry Bedard, horse and dog trainer from Canada about how you can successfully take your dog on trail rides. Many horse riders also have dogs and not all of them are well behaved around horses. Often horses and dogs do not go well together and either the dog ends up being afraid of horses or the horse might get upset every time it sees a dog. This does not have to be if you introduce both of them properly and if you take the time to school your horse and dog. Sherry gives us some tips on how to do this best and we also talk about which dog breeds are best suited for day and multiple day rides and how we can choose a puppy accordingly.

In today’s episode, Heather and Ute are talking about how to best protect your horse's legs while being out on trail. We discuss different types of protective gear for trailering your horse and for riding out on trail. What you should know about different kinds of leg protection such as brushing boots, polo wraps, bell boots & co, why less is more sometimes and what you can do to keep your horses' legs safe and sound.

    Trail Skills: Ponying Horses

    Trail Skills: Ponying Horses

In today's episode I am talking about a valuable skill for trail riders: Ponying Horses. This basically means, leading a horse while riding another. It is a skillset which comes in handy while training young horses, leading a packhorse, riding with a young child or a beginner or bringing home the horse of an injured rider. In short, every rider should know how to pony a horse and every horse should get used to being ponied or having another horse being ponied alongside him.

Friend or Foe? Your Lunging Whip when Lunging Your Horse

Friend or Foe? Your Lunging Whip when Lunging Your Horse

Have you been using your lunging whip incorrectly? Have you decided not to use it at all?

Your lunging whip is one of the best aids you have to help you clarify your communication when it comes to lunging your horse. However, in order for it to be of benefit, it must be used correctly.

And, unfortunately, the lunging whip can often be misused, and often, therefore, misunderstood when it comes to aids in lunging and riding.

Lunging Whip; What’s in a Name?

For many riders, their resistance to and incorrect use of the lunging whip is caused by the name we have given this piece of equipment. I have a feeling that if a lunging whip was called a pointer or a demonstrator, it would ‘feel’ different for many riders to incorporate it into their conversation with their horse.

    Loose Lunging versus Lunging...

    Loose Lunging versus Lunging...

Do you know that, contrary to popular belief, lunging is not ‘running in circles’? That, when done right, lunging is one of the most beneficial, easy to use, and low barrier to entry tools you can work with your horse to improve your riding.

True and good quality lunging improves both horse and rider; and can be used by all horses and riders, regardless of where they are in their riding journey.

Yes, it is that good… This is why I feel a little passionate when people confuse loose lunging for actual lunging! In fact, I don’t believe that loose lunging should even be called lunging. What it should e called depends on what you are using it for… But it is not lunging.

Working Towards Self Carriage with Your Horse on the Lunge

Working Towards Self Carriage with Your Horse on the Lunge

Self carriage is something a lot of riders have on their ‘goals’ list for their horse. As though it is something that can be achieved once and ‘ticked off'. Done and dusted. If only…

I believe that self carriage is a sign of development and growth in both horse and rider. A start in the sharing of responsibilities that lead to the desired outcome. Each team member realizing that it truly does take a team effort in order to make real and lasting progress.

And yet, so often, the rider can get in the way and actually hinder the horse's training when it comes to self carriage.
