Ep. 163: Degrees Of Separation... MONTROSE

Ep. 163: Degrees Of Separation... MONTROSE

This week we offer up the 9th installment of our series called, “Degrees Of Separation…” where we discuss the more obscure side projects and solo releases from some not-so-obscure artists. This time around we are paying homage to one of the original classic rock gunslingers that helped design the template for hard rock in the 80s and beyond: the amazingly talented RONNIE MONTROSE! While he’s no longer with us, his spirit carries on in strength and numbers in his vast body of work from the various bands he fronted or participated in.

New to InObscuria? It’s all about digging up obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. While we may be talking about a band or artist that many of you know in this episode, perhaps you are not aware of the depth of side projects he has had over his long career. Our hope is that we turn you on to something new!

    Songs this week include:

    1. The Edgar Winter Group - “Undercover Man” from They Only Come Out At Night (1972)
    2. Montrose - “Make It Last” from Montrose (1973)
    3. Gamma - “Razor King” from Gamma 1 (1979)
    4. Montrose - “M Is For Machine” from Mean (1987)
    5. Ronnie Montrose - “New Kid In Town” from The Diva Station (1990)
    6. Glenn Hughes - “Justified Man” from Addiction (1996)
    7. Ronnie Montrose - “The Kingdom’s Come Undone” from 10 X 10 (2017)
    8. Gamma - “Open Fire” from Legends Live In Concert Vol. 17 (2015)
    9. Ronnie Montrose - “Another Brick In The Wall, Pt. 2” from Backs Against The Wall – A Tribute To Pink Floyd (2006)

Would you believe one man is responsible for the innovation of both the Flying Trapeze AND the well known garment, the Leotard! Well its true! Listen to hear how this very well built dude dared to soar through the air before anyone else, creating the aerial art form we know as the Trapeze, and the famous outfit he dawned to do it,  that really SHOWED it all, if you catch my drift!

    Circuses

    Circuses

We’re raising the "big top" for a little Circus talk. We’ll cover smooth-talking PT Barnum and his questionable intentions, his merger with James Baily to create Barnum and Bailey’s, and their circus being picked up by the 7 Ringling Bros to ultimately achieve the Circus’ Final Form -- Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey circus. We wrap the show up by picking our favorite things about circuses. Grab some popcorn and one of those cheap, light-up plastic toys, this is Tell Me What You Know.

Myrtle Corbin: "The Four Legged Girl" w/ Special Guest

Myrtle Corbin: "The Four Legged Girl" w/ Special Guest

Andrea Jones-Rooy - Ask a Political Scientist About The Circus

Andrea Jones-Rooy - Ask a Political Scientist About The Circus

I met Andrea Jones-Rooy when I was in Shanghai China for a comedy festival. She was there teaching at a university, performing at a circus themed nightclub, and doing stand up comedy.

She’s since moved all of these activities, and strange combinations of them, to New York which is where we caught up with her to get her origin story and to discuss her newest project the YouTube and podcast series “Ask a Political Scientist”.

Russell Woo Ran Away to Join the Circus

Russell Woo Ran Away to Join the Circus

Today we talk with Russell Woo, whose creativity and talents often find him airborne as he literally ran away to join the circus.   We discover in today's episode that the circus is only the beginning.  Yes, he's a talented aerialist who performs breathtaking acrobatics on trapeze and silks streamers high above the stage and you'll learn soon about his plans to play piano and weave tales while both he and the piano are suspended midair.  He's also classically trained dancer and pianist, and the piano work during our breaks today is all Russell.  He still consults with businesses, but finds a way to use creativity into his work as  he uses story telling to help corporations to better understand  their various perdicaments.   He’s been innovative and has created all his life and although there have been a few fits and starts with striking a balance between a professional and creative life, he's quite adept at grabbing all the strings of and flying - multiple kites.
