Healing Emotional Eating for Trauma Survivors: A Conversation with Diane Petrella

In this episode, holistic psychotherapist Diane Petrella discusses her book, 'Healing Emotional Eating for Trauma Survivors', emphasizing the importance of understanding the connection between trauma and emotional eating. Diane shares her personal journey into social work, spurred by a devastating childhood trauma, and the processes underlying her therapeutic techniques. She provides helpful insights into dealing with emotional eating, suggesting strategies such as developing a meditation practice and enhancing inner wisdom. Diane reinforces the idea that healing is not about eradicating emotional eating, but gaining self-compassion, understanding, and coping mechanisms to navigate triggers.

The life of a male escort, with Mitch Larsson

The life of a male escort, with Mitch Larsson

    * Trigger warning - this episode mentions abuse. For support, contact 1800RESPECT *

Mitch Larsson found himself living a pretty common lifestyle as a married father and lawyer, but a snap decision one day in his 40s changed his life forever. He became a male escort.

In today's episode, we hear about what brought him to this snap decision, what the response was like from his wife, family and friends, and what he has told his 8 year old son.

We also delve into another side of this particular line of work that is often overlooked - that it is very often more than just sex. Mitch explains that some who seek the services of an escort are also seeking companionship or the desire to rebuild their confidence. He shares his experience with some of these clients and what it has meant for both the client and himself.

Mitch is now an author and tells his story in his book ‘Time For Her’.

Episode 69: What Is Self-Worth (And How Do You Get It)?
We toss around the term "self-worth" often, but do we really understand what it means? We had the pleasure of chatting about this concept, and how to build self-worth with Anne Ockene Boudreau, inspirational author, coach, and executive who is devoted to helping others develop healthy self-worth. In her new book, “A Human Mosaic: Heal, Renew & Develop Self-Worth,” (https://amzn.to/2XD3RYA) she reveals how self-worth is a critical element for sustainable personal change. Unspoken Pain - #Men Too with Dr Kelly Palfy

Unspoken Pain - #Men Too with Dr Kelly Palfy

We, of course, know that abuse of any child is wrong, but when boys are sexually abused, it is often not reported.  There are a lot of reasons for that. Ill be talking with Dr Kelli Palfy, who got interested in helping men who had been sexually abused as children when she was an investigator with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. We discuss some of the reasons it's not talked about it, how it affects men when they carry the secret and some great organizations where they can find help and healing.

In this episode we discuss :

    1. How Dr Palfy's careen in Law Enforcement and corrections spurred her interest into helping men who were sexually abused as children.
    2. Relevant studies demonstrating how much  access perpetrators find to children.
    3. Why the abuse sometimes isn't recognized as abuse to the victims.
    4. How Secondary Trauma happens
    5. Are there signs to look for to recognize if a child is being molested.
    6. How attachment difficulties can arise when a survivor carries their trauma with them alone into adulthood.
    7. The barriers that men face to seeking help for their trauma.
    8. How parents can discuss healthy touch with their sons.
    9. Organizations that can help.

The Role Filmmaking Plays in Dealing with Trauma with Acclaimed Filmmaker Eric Christiansen

The Role Filmmaking Plays in Dealing with Trauma with Acclaimed Filmmaker Eric Christiansen

Eric Christiansen is an acclaimed documentarian who has built his brand around socially responsible filmmaking that educates, inspires and heals. He has the capability to identify an issue within a specific population and have it resonate with a general audience through compelling storytelling. A trauma survivor himself, having lost his home in the Santa Barbara Painted Cave fire disaster, he understands trauma, the resilience of the human spirit, and how important HOPE is to the healing journey. A seven-time Southwestern Region Emmy Award recipient, Christiansen's previous films (Faces in the Fire, Homecoming: A Vietnam Vets Journey, Searching for Home: Coming Back from War) have been transformative in the recovery process for thousands of people whose lives have been compromised mentally, spiritually and physically by trauma. Leveraged as educational tools by top mental health institutions, Christiansen's films migrate from the entertainment arena into environments that help additional audiences navigate the profound collateral damage trauma creates not only on the individual, but the family and community as well. The New York Times called his last film, "strikingly photographed" and "...sure to give comfort and support to countless veterans and their families." By spotlighting these survivors and their journeys, Christiansen has been able to help unify a variety of audiences around the power of HOPE, and educate the general population about the complexities of trauma. Christiansen has also produced for major networks including Discovery, TLC, PBS, MTV and an Imax film.

EP 20 How Our Anger Can be transformative instead of toxic

EP 20 How Our Anger Can be transformative instead of toxic

In this week's episode, I'm joined by psychotherapist Nicole Schiener to talk about the power of anger and how we can use it as transformative energy instead of a toxic one that depletes us.

    We talked about:

    • The conflicted relationship that many survivors and Black, Indigenous and People of Colour have with anger because of their trauma.
    • Why is it so important for people with trauma to process their anger and not just 'get over it'.
    • What survivors who are afraid of their anger can do, particularly if they're not sure how to express it.
    • What reclaiming and transforming anger into healing looks like on a personal and collective level.
    • How most survivors are told to get over things that happened a long time ago and how one can respond to these kinds of comments?
    • What a humble warrior means and how we can all be a warrior for others.

This was most definitely an empowering episode and I can't wait for you to hear it!

    ABOUT NICOLE SCHIENER:

Nicole Schiener is a Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario, Canada, and a published author. Her writing has been featured in the Gottman Blog and Elephant Journal.

Nicole is a member of her region's Sexual Assault Response Team and a mama to a teen son and 10-year-old daughter.
