S8E3 - Self Control and an Empath

S8E3 - Self Control and an Empath

Self-control or the ability to manage one's impulses, emotions, and behaviors to achieve long-term goal is what separates humans from the rest of the animal kingdom. Self-control is primarily rooted in the prefrontal cortex the planning, problem-solving, and decision making center of the brain which is significantly larger in humans than in other mammals.

The richness of nerve connections in the prefrontal cortex enables people to plan, evaluate alternative actions, and ideally avoid doing things they'll later regret, rather than immediately respond to every impulse as it arises.

What is an empath? A person who is highly attuned to the energies and emotions of those around them may be considered an empath. Empaths are said to feel what others are feeling so deeply that they “absorb” or “take on” the emotions themselves, often at the expense of their own emotional well-being.

Empathy depends on your ability to overcome your own perspective, appreciate someone else's, and step into their shoes. Self-control is essentially the same skill, except that those other shoes belong to your future self—a removed and hypothetical entity who might as well be a different person.

When Harry Met Sally (and by Harry, we mean us and by Sally we mean the endless universe)

When Harry Met Sally (and by Harry, we mean us and by Sally we mean the endless universe)

In this episode Sasha and I tell our love stories with the universe.

When she first caught our eye, our courtship, the rough parts, the different ways we made up and how we feel about each other now. It's a lot like the movie when Harry me Sally but less funny and no scenes in diners.

We'd love you to send us clips from your love stories with the Universe! If you can film yourself sitting on a couch with her, even better.

Love - Just Ride It Out

Love - Just Ride It Out

In this episode Sascha and I talk about our old strategies for self-protection when faced with the threat of uncharted love. We allow that they may be doing us more harm than good but we'll probably stick with them anyway.

Featuring: fathers, fire escapes, dreams, Greek Salad, some murder, tenacity, ice castles, and a mention of the Rat Stove (which will be better, though never fully, explained in an upcoming episode).

Love! Who can understand it? Certainly neither of us.

    Episode 12 - Court's 2023 Reflection

    Episode 12 - Court's 2023 Reflection

Thank YOU for coming back to The Magical Midlife Crisis Podcast! Merry holidays to you & yours!

Flying solo in this episode as my co-pilot Meg is plugged into her own health & family during this holiday season - send her prayers & high vibes!

Decided to take this moment to reflect on the year of 2023 from my perspective... it's been EXPANSIVE! Sooo many eureka moments came to light from all of the darkness that i've experienced since my earliest years.

    Here are some highlights:

    • this episode is "action" following all of my growing awareness to these traits of me that I no longer want to be victim to:  perfectionism, self sabotage, procrastination, feeling dumb, to name a few
    • thus, I am showin up to keep growin up - emotionally
    • the light-lessons that appear from the darkness often don't come until we CHOOSE to look within the darkness to see them... instead of "avoid" which I've always done until self-development came into my life
    • much of my darkness stems from the emotional disconnect in the home I grew up in
    • getting to the root of these insecurities has allowed me to move through them and on to the brighter side
    • just turned 40! the older i get, the younger i look and feel!
    • using the metaphor of life as an amusement park, every experience is a ride within it
    • "collaboration" has been my superpower word for the year of 2023, maybe even for the rest of my life! gonna keep wearing it until something else replaces it... which I'm not sure what could, it feels THAT POWERFUL!
    • my biggest revelation from my 6-month self-transformation course was my darkness connected to "family" and how I've allowed that darkness to bleed into my 'now' family - and the brightest light i discovered and have no reclaimed my power within all my family connections

It means a lot to utilize this thing called a podcast to connect with you all. I TRULY want to hear your own reflections that come to mind as you've listened or when you tune back in... with any dark moments in your life where you found a better or more magical outcome - if you're listening on Spotify - comment in the Q&A box under this description. Prolific songwriter Janice Kapp Perry on sharing her testimony of the Savior through her music

Janice Kapp Perry has composed 3,000 songs and hymns beloved by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her well-known repertoire includes Primary hymns, “A Child’s Prayer,” “I Love To See the Temple” and “I’m Trying To Be Like Jesus.”  She started her music career later in life after two lucky breaks — a broken TV and an injury — took her from the sports court to roadshow music writing. Her work has been featured in the Church hymnbook and Primary songbook and translated and sung around the world. From 1993 to 1999 she performed with The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square, often singing her own music. In 2020, Brigham Young University conferred upon her an honorary degree, a Doctor of Christian Service in Music. Her acceptance speech, “Filling the World With Music of Faith,” was posted online due to the pandemic. Janice Kapp Perry joins this episode of the Church News podcast to discuss the power of music, sharing her testimony of the Savior and the profound lessons she has learned during her remarkable and varied life.

    Strategies For Staying

    Strategies For Staying

This month Sascha and I are talking about staying.

We discuss how staying with the hurt bits and the fears is not passive; it's muscular. It burns calories.

We notice how it feels, to us, like an endeavor for which a person requires a support crew - to wave and shout encouragement and offer snacks and flashlights when the sun goes down.

It also doesn't feel intuitive - it feels like something we are learning, slowly, by trial and error. In hope that shared knowledge might help us fall less often and less painfully as we build our staying skills we share strategies for staying.

It feels helpful to us. We hope it also feels helpful to you.

Give Yourself The Gift of Guidance

Give Yourself The Gift of Guidance

How many times have you put yourself into crazymaking mode, trying to over-control a situation, just so you could move the needle forward a tiny bit in the direction of your dreams? Ah Queen, yes. I’ve been there too. It’s exhausting, isn’t it? And everytime I’m reminded of how powerful God is, and how perfect divine timing is, and ultimately how beautiful it is to SURRENDER to the truth of that!

If you need this reminder today too, then I encourage you to come join me in this conversation!
