Kez Reed on the NBA, Sports Marketing and Juglife Foundation

Kez Reed on the NBA, Sports Marketing and Juglife Foundation

This week, Brock and Will sit down with Kez Reed, a former Division 1 baseball player, and entrepreneur. Kez is the founder of the Reed Company, Inc. which specializes in providing guidance to professional athletes on contracts, brand deals, and other ways to grow their careers. He also teamed up with NBA star, JaVale McGee to form Juglife, a foundation dedicated to spreading awareness about the importance of drinking water.

In this episode, Brock and Will begin by asking Kez about Juglife. Kez shares the story of how it all started from a twitter trend, to now being a global organization which provides clean drinking water to underserved communities to all corners of the world. Today, Juglife has built several wells at schools in Africa, bringing fresh water to dozens of communities. Kez looks to the future in which they plan to build an athletics facility to serve those same communities.

Later, Kez discusses his business at the Reed Company, Inc. He provides insight on the global sports industry and how he's able to guide athletes to further expand their careers, both on and off the court. Kez mainly focuses on basketball, namely the NBA. With NBA tip off aligning with the launch of the episode, Kez describes the challenges of his "hell week" which include players going to new teams, new brand deals, and new markets.

This is a great episode for anyone interested in sports marketing, nonprofit charities, or the NBA. Kez lives by the motto, "Do good business with good people."

***We have a stat correction. We wanted to make sure to inform you that 78% of athletes face economic challenges after retirement opposed to the 90% mentioned.

    TRUMP: I PREVENTED NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST YOU'RE WELCOME! - 8.31.23

    TRUMP: I PREVENTED NUCLEAR HOLOCAUST YOU'RE WELCOME! - 8.31.23

SEASON 2 EPISODE 26: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN

A-Block (1:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: In an April deposition in the New York Civil Fraud case, Trump told the Attorney General's office that he wasn't running his company because he was too busy saving the world from nuclear holocaust and saving millions of lives because he was the only one to think of DEALING with North Korea. You’re WELCOME LOSERS.

This underscores a part of Trump’s insanity that it sometimes seems like we have gotten used to: he really DOES think he’s the first person to ever think of something, or to DO something, that everybody else in his position did as long ago as 1946. I never hear him say something like this – “Only I saved millions of lives because only I dealt with North Korea” without thinking of what the idiot director Roger DeBris in Mel Brooks’ movie “The Producers” says about the play itself – quote – “I never knew that the ‘THIRD REICH’ meant Germany! I mean it’s just DRENCHED with historical goodies like that.” That’s Trump.

Still, Trump didn’t save Peter Navarro, who goes to trial – but only after failing to grab a paper “TRUMP LOST” sign held an inch over his head. And he didn’t save Rudy Giuliani, who goes to trial for slandering Shaye Moss and Ruby Freeman and hours later went on radio and slandered Shaye Moss and Ruby Freeman AGAIN. And he didn’t save Kevin McCarthy who will now have to start an impeachment without holding a vote – which he once violently criticized – or hold the vote and LOSE IT.

The knives are out for Fani Willis. The Georgia State Senate Majority Leader now threatens her with reprimands, sanctions, hearings, defunding and removal. His name is Gooch and he’s from Lumpkin County. But the Georgia State HOUSE Speaker, Jon Burns, another Republican, says trying to defund Willis violates separation of powers.

With no hyperbole: I worry for Speaker Burns' safety.

And the podcast celebrates a big milestone with a big thank you to you: the August audience was 3,000,000!

B-Block (21:44) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: McConnell freezes again. Nice of his staffers to leave him out there and ask reporters to yell at him. And the brewing story about how if Mitch goes, the Democratic Kentucky governor may defy a new law and appoint a Democrat in his place. Plus the Proud Boys sentencings that weren't. (25:18) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Anti-pickleball millionaire Holly Peterson has an unexpected feature in her home: her own pickleball court. The guy who claimed he killed Bin Laden got arrested and replied by claiming he killed bin Laden. And why even in these days of loose ethics in cable news, MSNBC must fire primetime anchor Stephanie Ruhle.

C-Block (32:00) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Poor puppy Thomas: attacked, left to die on the train tracks, and still wagging as humans treat him. (33:20) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It's the 26th anniversary of the death of Princess Diana, which was also the day cable news jumped the shark and the shark was in the Rubicon.

How Aloha is Making Waves in the CPG space with CEO, Brad Charron

How Aloha is Making Waves in the CPG space with CEO, Brad Charron

Athletes are constantly striving to find their unfair advantage, and most businesses are no different. It’s one tangible thing that sets us apart from our peers that makes us stand out. In late 80’s Nike searched for their unfair advantage and found it in Michael Jordan and the Jumpman brand. Apple was floundering in a market dominated by its competitor until they brought Steve Jobs back into the fold and the rest is history.

Marketing in a crowded segment, such as CPG, those unfair advantages are few and far between. Brad Charron, knows what it’s like to battle those brands flexing their unfair advantage. Brad has fought an uphill climb during his days at Under Armour, Lucky’s, and now as the CEO of Aloha, he’s bringing the heat to its competitors.

“There's a lot of choices we make in terms of what goes into our product and our food and that choicefulness. We bring that forward in our messaging. We talk about being the only plant-based company that is a hundred percent certified organic that is B-Corp certified. It's good marketing to try to differentiate yourself. It also just happens to be true, even better. With hot spaces in general, the people on the margins are gonna try to get into this space. It's smart business for them. That does not mean it's the most authentic. And in our case our advantage is that we're walking the walk and the challenge is how do you get that message across in a very cluttered environment?”

As a newly certified B-Corp, Aloha is making waves as a business that’s committed to the greater good, and their messaging reflects that. On this episode of Marketing Trends I sat down with Brad and we discussed a host of topics, including why, after a long run as a marketer, he decided to take up the reins as a CEO. Brad also touched on his past experiences with companies such as Under Armour, Chobani, and Lucky’s, and the role data plays in a marketers strategy, and why Aloha is all-in on omni-channel. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did.

    Main Takeaways

    • Just Do It: Every company has an unfair advantage, it is what differentiates the company from the rest of its competition. In the CPG space, and in popular channels in general, you have to understand what separates your products and services from your competitors and hone in on that. If you're a health-conscious brand protein bar, make sure you lean into that to separate yourself from the other bars in the same space.
    • Keep Showing Up: Your brand must be where your consumers are. Whether that’s in big-box retail, ecommerce or grocery stores, CPG brands have to provide consumers with a holistic shopping experience and meet them where they are. When you adopt a holistic omni-channel approach, you’re also setting your brand up for consumers to more easily find your product,  leading to greater adoption.
    • A Brand with a Purpose: If you’re a purpose-led brand, not only does your messaging need to reflect your mission, but your company has to align with that same mission. Mission-driven companies have the unique ability to build trust with their consumers, but once that trust is broken, it’s very hard to rebuild.
