    What's Driving The Political Divide Over Vaccinations

    What's Driving The Political Divide Over Vaccinations
    An NPR analysis shows that since the vaccine rollout, counties that voted heavily for Donald Trump have had nearly three times the COVID mortality rates of those that voted for Joe Biden. That difference appears to be driven by a partisan divide in vaccination rates. As NPR correspondent Geoff Brumfield reports, political polarization and misinformation are driving a significant share of the deaths in the pandemic.

    Omicron: Do You Need to Freak Out?

    Omicron: Do You Need to Freak Out?
    Welp, the pandemic has served up yet another poop sandwich, and it’s called omicron. This variant is popping up in dozens of countries across the world, and scientists are racing to get a handle on it. So how bad could this be? And could it sneak past our vaccines? To find out, we talk to virologist and immunologist Professor Ann Sheehy, Prof. Art Wallace, epidemiologist Dr. Barbara Cohn, immunologist Dr. Ali Ellebedy and virologist Dr. John Tembo. Ask Me Anything #17

    In this episode of the podcast, Sam takes your questions. He begins by addressing the blowback that followed his previous podcast on “vaccine hesitancy” with Eric Topol. And then he answers the following questions:

    How can I inoculate my biracial children against identity politics?

    In what way is journalism broken, and how can we fix it?

    Have you read the research suggesting that the effects of microdosing psychedelics are indistinguishable from taking placebos?

    Can you comment on the degree to which Leftist political ideas have captured the Buddhist community?

    What should Democrats do to prevent a resurgence of Trumpism?

    What are the ingredients for a good life?

    Is it ever ethical for governments to lie to their citizens?

    If the present moment is all that matters, how can we plan for the future?

    Rural Tennessee’s Vaccine Hesitators

    Rural Tennessee’s Vaccine Hesitators

    Vaccine hesitancy is a major reason that many experts now fear the United States will struggle to attain herd immunity against the coronavirus.

    And while many initially hesitant demographics have become more open to vaccinations, one group is shifting much less: white Republican evangelical Christians, who tend to live in rural communities.

    Here’s what that looks like in Greeneville, Tenn.

    Guest: Jan Hoffman, a reporter covering behavioral health and health law for The New York Times.

    Sign up here to get The Daily in your inbox each morning. And for an exclusive look at how the biggest stories on our show come together, subscribe to our newsletter

    Background reading:

    • Reluctance to get vaccinated is widespread in white, Republican communities like this one in Appalachia. But it’s far more complicated than just a partisan divide. Read Jan’s reporting here

    Why Herd Immunity Is Slipping Away

    Why Herd Immunity Is Slipping Away

    From the earliest days of the pandemic, herd immunity has consistently factored into conversations about how countries can find their way out of lockdowns and restrictions.

    Now, many experts believe that the United States may never reach the requisite level of immunity.

    We explore why, and what it might look like to live in a country where there is no herd immunity against the coronavirus.

    Guest: Apoorva Mandavilli, a science and global health reporter for The New York Times.

    Sign up here to get The Daily in your inbox each morning. And for an exclusive look at how the biggest stories on our show come together, subscribe to our newsletter

    Background reading:

    • The emergence of widely circulating coronavirus variants and persistent hesitancy about vaccines will keep the goal out of reach. The virus appears to be here to stay, but vaccinating the most vulnerable may be enough to restore normalcy.

    Why Some Countries Have Low Vaccination Rates
    We've been talking a lot about COVID in the US. Now, we want to look at how things are going in some other countries. NPR's correspondents — Jason Beaubien, Phil Reeves, and Anthony Kuhn — talk with Morning Edition's Noel King about why most of the world is struggling to get even a small percentage of their population vaccinated.

    #159 - Peter Hotez, M.D., Ph.D.: Evolution of the anti-vaccine movement, the causes of autism, and COVID-19 vaccine state of affairs

    Peter Hotez is an internationally recognized physician-scientist in neglected tropical diseases and vaccine development. In this episode, they first follow up on the podcast episode (#158) with Brian Deer (the investigative journalist who exposed the complex and disturbing story behind the infamous 1998 Lancet paper by Andrew Wakefield linking the MMR vaccine and autism) with a broader discussion about the origin and evolution of the anti-vaccine movement. They explore some of the specific claims being made around vaccine additives, the timing of when vaccines are given, and claims about issues with the HPV vaccine specifically. Next, Dr. Hotez shares his own journey as a parent of an autistic child and speaks of the challenges of diagnosing autism, what could account for the seeming increase in the prevalence, and whether there is any support for the notion that environmental triggers play a role. They close out with a discussion on the state of affairs with respect to COVID-19 vaccination, comparing the various vaccines as well as the challenges that emerging variants of the virus may present. This episode was originally recorded on April 2, 2021.

    We discuss:

    • The stubborn persistence of anti-vaccine sentiment (3:00);
    • A closer look at claims about thimerosal and vaccine spacing causing autism (12:00);
    • The Hib vaccine: An example of the profound difference a vaccine can make (23:30);
    • The controversy surrounding the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine (30:45);
    • The growing anti-science sentiment, COVID vaccine hesitance, and the basis of the anti-vaxx movement (39:00);
    • The origins of autism, and Hotez’s personal story as a parent of an autistic child (1:02:45);
    • The challenge of diagnosing autism, increasing prevalence, and a potential parallel to Alzheimer’s disease (1:14:15);
    • Comparing the various COVID-19 vaccines and the impact of emerging variants of the virus (1:30:00);
    • Global vaccination challenges and “vaccine diplomacy” (1:40:45); and
    • More.
