Fostering Collisions for Medical Innovation: The Jacobs Institute (Encore)

Fostering Collisions for Medical Innovation: The Jacobs Institute (Encore)

A failure analysis meeting, where 30 top surgeons came together to discuss their biggest catastrophes, was the seed that built the Jacobs Institute for Medical Innovation in Buffalo, New York. The Jacobs Institute (JI) is a multi-disciplinary vascular center that fosters collisions among professionals of different disciplines in order to develop new ideas, technologies and systems. The building itself has won numerous architectural awards and was designed to force interactions among the various specialties. You want a fancy coffee? You're gonna have to mingle to get it.

Claire Rickard: Prevention of Vascular Catheter Associated Bloodstream Infections

Claire Rickard: Prevention of Vascular Catheter Associated Bloodstream Infections

Bloodstream infections (BSI) are the most deadly healthcare associated infections, and 35% of these are caused by intravenous (IV) therapy through various types of IV catheter [1] . Such ‘catheter-associated BSI (CABSI)’ substantially increase risk of death, prolong ICU and hospital stay, and healthcare costs. Nurses are responsible for many aspects of catheter insertion, management, troubleshooting, and removal. To prevent CABSI, we must deny microorganisms entry into the blood via both the: (1) catheter insertion site, and (2) internal catheter lumen. This presentation reviews the concept of CABSI, core fundamentals of infection prevention, and reviews recent evidence from large randomised controlled trials.

Today our host Sam Pauly speaks with a recent recipient of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS) European Journal of Neuroscience (EJN) Young Investigator Prize, awarded to early-career researchers in recognition of their outstanding scientific contributions to any area of neuroscience.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Nicolas Renier — who received the prize for his work in mapping neuronal and vascular networks in transparent brains — group leader at the Paris Brain Institute, studying the development of the brain throughout life using cutting-edge imaging methods.

From the European Journal of Neuroscience, the official journal of FENS, we welcome two senior editors: Dr Paola Bovolenta and Dr Antoine Adamantidis.
