"Why Big Nations Lose Small Wars."

"Why Big Nations Lose Small Wars."

“The guerrilla wins if he does not lose.”
      – Henry Kissinger

In this episode we update a classic article written by Andrew Mack back in 1975.  As I feel strongly enough that a 50-year-old article is worth re-investigating and much of this analysis is based on Mack’s original conclusions, I highly recommend you read the original which is easily available in digital format.  Its full title is “Why Big Nations Lose Small Wars: The Politics of Asymmetric Conflict” and it appeared in the journal World Politics, Volume 27.

How do massively outnumbered, outgunned, out-trained, and out-supplied guerillas sustain themselves in the field indefinitely?  What explains the paradox that even though the big nations win the key battles, such as the US with the Tet Offensive and the French in Algiers, they nevertheless find themselves in a weaker strategic position?   Would the outcomes have been different if the civilian leaderships did not tie the hands of their militaries?  These are rabbit holes that have some unsettling implications.

    Summary:
How did the Seventh-day Adventist Church handle the Vietnam War? How did it affect Adventist servicemen and women? How did it impact missionaries? Were there any protests on Adventist campuses in America? Matthew answers all of these questions and still manages to talk about piña coladas.

    The What:
The Adventist History Podcast is a monthly podcast telling a story of the Seventh-day Adventist Church hosted by Matthew J. Lucio.

As this podcast demonstrates, Insurgency is one of the world’s oldest professions.  It is a chance for the oppressed or the invaded to push back, to challenge the larger force with unconventional and guerrilla tactics.  Whether assassination or ambush, punji stakes or IEDs, the Insurgent has many tricks and answers to the larger enemy.  The Chinese strategist Tzu Su argued it was a key aspect of warfare, and today it is as relevant as it ever was.  Spartacus used such methods, as did TE Lawrence.  Indeed, even Lawrence’s approach to demolishing bridges – leaving them upright but destroyed – is a formula adopted by Ukraine when attacking the Kerch Strait bridge in Crimea.

The indirect approach and keeping the enemy off balance; Insurgency embraces it all.

    so it goes,

    A Bright Shining Lie

    A Bright Shining Lie

John Paul Vann was a career Army officer.  He served in combat during the Korean War and was an advisor to the South Vietnamese Army’s IV Corps fighting the Viet Cong for a year from 1962 to 1963.  Vann retired from the Army a few months after completed that assignment.  He returned to Vietnam in 1965.  First he worked as an official for the Agency for International Development.  Vann was then made the Deputy for Civil Operations and Rural Development Support for the Third Corps Tactical Zone in the twelve provinces north and west of Saigon.  In 1968 he was assigned to the same position for the Fourth Corps Tactical Zone in the provinces south of Saigon.  Vann died in a helicopter crash in Vietnam on June 16, 1972.  During his years in Vietnam, he developed some strong views about what the United States was doing versus what he thought it should be doing.

291 - The CIA, Smuggling Drugs, and Fighting Communism: The Story of Air America

291 - The CIA, Smuggling Drugs, and Fighting Communism: The Story of Air America

Fascinating stuff today!  I knew almost nothing about Air America - the CIA's secret airline - before this week's research. Today, we go over the history of Air America, and also look at how Air America fit into the CIA's battle for ideological control of southeast Asia. We look at the Cold War battle that wasn't limited to just Korea and Vietnam. Significant fighting also took place in Laos and elsewhere as the US waged secret wars against communist forces backed by the Soviets or the Chinese, or both. The Cold War was an international battle for ideological supremacy - communism versus democracy - and so much of the fighting was done in Asia. And the CIA was so heavily involved. As was Air American. Hope you find all of this as interesting as I do. Hail Nimrod!

We are so used to the narrative of the Vietnam War being told through a masculine lens; male politicians, sending male soldiers to Vietnam, movies about male soldiers and male historians writing all the textbooks. But there is a group whose perspective we don’t hear from very often, and that is the Vietnamese women who fought for the Viet Cong. Hanoi Hannah and the Perfume River Squad, it is time to hear to hear your stories.

    Reflection Questions

    1. Research the context of the 1960, what rights did women in your country not have at this time?
    2. Why do you think that women have not been allowed in combat roles in the armed forces for such a long time? What is the thinking behind these kinds of restrictions?
    3. Can you think of a reason why western textbooks do not generally include the role that women played in the Vietnam War?
    4. 50 years later, the former Perfume Rive Squad member explains “I wanted to liberate myself, liberate my homeland, and liberate other women.”  Explain her perspective on the Vietnam War and her motive for making the statement.
    5. What is the implicit and explicit meaning behind Hanoi Hannah’s announcement, “Do you miss your families and homes? They are questioning why you are here. In America there is no unity, there is violence, there are protests against you.”
