Ep 22 Successful Airman + History Teacher + Instructional Coach

Ep 22 Successful Airman + History Teacher + Instructional Coach

In this episode, you’ll meet my history-buff friend and former co-worker, Rob Miles. This guy is proof that it’s never too late to go back to school or to change careers!

Immediately after high school, he served for 26 years in the military and completed his BA in history before retiring—but he didn’t stop there!

He went on to teach middle school and high school, acquiring his alternative teacher certification through Troops to Teachers and mentoring for that program for several years.

While teaching, Rob earned his M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction, with emphasis on Adolescent Literacy and eLearning/Technology.

Currently, he’s using that degree to help teachers integrate technology into their classrooms by working diligently with both students and teachers. He talks about the challenges of navigating virtual and blended learning during the pandemic.

Oh, and another cool story: Rob tells about his visit to a school district in Odawara, Japan and spending time with some of the students and teachers there.

Don't miss the sound life advice and teacher tips (including self-care) that he bestows upon you in this episode!

    8: In the Real World

    8: In the Real World
A big part of the Harvard experience includes the time you spend away from school. In the first part of this episode, Jason Lam tackles big questions about impact and purpose with a friend on a leave of absence. In the second, Kalos Chu tells the story of a transformative summer in quarantine. Written by Jason Lam and Kalos Chu. Produced and edited by Kai McNamee. Podcast art by Kai McNamee and Yuen Ting Chow.

    7: Beyond the Bubble

    7: Beyond the Bubble
While most students spent the semester far from Harvard, some lived just outside its gates. Students seeking to recreate the campus experience signed on to short term rentals in Cambridge and surrounding areas, entering a housing market at the cusp of an eviction crisis. It’s part of  what one student calls “gentrification in rapid action” — and Harvard students are part of the problem. Presented by The Harvard Crimson. Written and reported by Maliya Ellis and Jane Li. Produced and edited by Kai McNamee. Podcast art by Kai McNamee and Yuen Ting Chow.

    6: 'Insanely Irresponsible'

    6: 'Insanely Irresponsible'
In early October, Jessica M. Moore ’21 was hospitalized with COVID-19. She came out of the experience feeling like Harvard had failed her: the institution seemed unprepared to handle severe cases. This episode explores Jessica’s story and some of the ways the pandemic has exacerbated the inequities of Harvard. Presented by The Harvard Crimson. Hosted, written and produced by Kai McNamee. Podcast art by Kai McNamee and Yuen Ting Chow.

Soul Searching with 16-year-old Andrew Kloeppel: Blessings in Disguise and Developing Optimism

Soul Searching with 16-year-old Andrew Kloeppel: Blessings in Disguise and Developing Optimism

Our guest in this week’s family friendly episode is my inspiring son who gives reassurance to all parents struggling during the pandemic with supporting their kids with virtual school. “It’s not as bad as it can seem. You guys have done great!”
He also shares his soul searching from a very unlucky break, literally, when he fractured his hip playing basketball on Dec 30. “Breaking my hip was a blessing in disguise. Going to Children’s Hospital and seeing all the kids there…it’s important to see your bad things in a light and understand there are people suffering and you have to have compassion.” He learned to reframe challenges and look for the good.
He summarized those life lessons in an insightful essay and won a $1000 scholarship. “It was one of the best experiences I’ve had this year!” The parenting lesson I learned was to give him a $20 incentive to write the essay. How do we improve our luck? “You can’t win if you don’t try.”
Andrew also shares what he learned from taking #DaleCarnegie for teens: “Confidence can help you when you’re trying to convince or have a good conversation with someone. Confidence is key.”
His practical wisdom: “Get involved. Get out there and try your best.”

    5: Unstoppable Force, Immovable Object
Old institutions like Harvard aren’t exactly known for being quick to adapt to change. So what happens when a global pandemic forces instructors and administrators to reimagine the college experience? Kai and Jason talk to instructors about virtual office hours, the future of higher education and doing math proofs in a windowless office. Presented by The Harvard Crimson. Hosted, written and produced by Kai McNamee and Jason Lam. Podcast art by Kai McNamee and Yuen Ting Chow.

Pat and Bo talk about the things that Bo is bringing home from school to use for virtual PhyEd.  Bo has a kick ball and soon will have a jump rope to play with. My only concern is that the ball is going to be popped by our dog at some time and I would bet some kids have already have had tears because their pet got to theirs.

Founders Chat: Obedience and the New Normal of Education - #26

Founders Chat: Obedience and the New Normal of Education - #26

One of the consequences of virtual schooling under a lockdown is the near impossibility of personal engagement with the student by the teacher.
Co-founder Deanna is here to talk about how that has affected some of the kids she tutors, and how that has led to a learning environment in which the only thing learned is how to be obedient.

At the Pisan Academy, we create all kinds of ways that parents can engage their kids in real learning, from a literature reading program to live, small group classes, with subjects ranging from cursive, grammar, history, and literature.

    4: Long Distance

    4: Long Distance
The international experience at Harvard is partly defined by distance: distance from home, distance from family, distance in culture. This episode explores international students’ experiences in the pandemic. It’s the story of a mostly-won legal battle, a nocturnal sleep schedule, and an identity crisis. Presented by The Harvard Crimson. Hosted and edited by Kai McNamee. Produced by Kai McNamee, Jason Lam, Ryan Gajarawala, and Allison Lee. Podcast art by Kai McNamee and Yuen Ting Chow.

On Finding a Place to Tether: Our Children's Mental Health with Fairfax County School Psychologist, Dr. Joshua Kefer

Dr. Joshua Kefer brings decades of experience to this conversation with The Two Jess(es). Packed full of helpful information, this episode is also equal parts a therapy session as Dr. Kefer alleviates many of Jess and Jess' fears about the psychological impact the current pandemic, and virtual school setting may be causing for our children.

Dr. Kefer reminds us to pay attention to how we may be projecting our own fears and anxieties onto what our children are really experiencing, and brings with him a beautiful reminder to find something to tether ourselves to, because our children are tethering to us.

If you are scared about how this is all affecting your school/college aged children, then spend some time with Dr. Kefer, he will make you feel like it really is going to be alright.

Effective Tips for Homeschooling and Distance Learning Parents - My Interview with Rachel Southerland

Effective Tips for Homeschooling and Distance Learning Parents - My Interview with Rachel Southerland

In this episode, I interview Rachel Southerland who is a mother of six children.  She successfully homeschooled all of her children and they have all gone onto higher education including three obtaining a Masters and one working on a Masters.  She provides insight, knowledge and tips to help us navigate this new world that many of us are experiencing.

Some of her insight includes the following:
1).  If you can make it the first year, you can make a long time
2).  Ask for help.  Asking anyone in your social circles to help assist with subjects that your kids may be struggling in.
3).  Effective time management; make a schedule and keep it. Routines are so important for children. Make a default schedule so you can effective manage days where you have other things come up.

Kid Got Your Ticket #33 Virtual World

Kid Got Your Ticket #33 Virtual World

On today's episode of #KGYT we touch on a variety of topics. Can a person really dance any type of music to any type of music? Why are we calling it a Trump vs Harris race instead of Trump vs Biden.

Is the start of school being done virtual going to affect how kids become friends once they get back to in person learning? How has our own family dealt with the transition, specially coming from a private school.

Are teachers really teaching or are they just putting YouTube videos for the kids to learn from? We've seen what some parents are feeding their children for lunch. Is this going to affect their health in the future?

Don't forget to subscribe to our channel and our youtube channel.

COVID Is Kicking Our Butts 2.0...#057

We are a little discouraged right now. So, we thought we would share with you in hopes of encouraging you (at least a little). If COVID continues to be hard for you and your family, please know that you are not alone.

It is hard to find space right now. It is hard to offer what your kids need in the midst of a pandemic and virtual schooling and less interaction with their friends than they are used to (and need). Be encouraged! You are not alone and this will not last forever...

The Stat of the Week is about young adults living at home during COVID. We have no space so why should older parents. ;)

Thank you for listening! We hope you enjoy this episode, and if you do please take a moment to share the podcast with a friend who might be encouraged by this conversation.

5 Simple Ways to Calm Overwhelm

5 Simple Ways to Calm Overwhelm

Episode 55: 5 Simple Ways to Calm Overwhelm

    1. Simplify - get take out, delegate, let go!

    2. Move your body - I’m not saying be a gym rat, or run a marathon. But take your puppy for a walk, or ride your bike. Appreciate your body and just move. We are more stagnant than we have ever been and the COVID 19 is real. It’s just like the freshman 15.

    3. Ask for what you need. This is hard. It’s hard to ask for help - but trust me we all need help right now.

    4. Get outside - sit outside and drink your coffee, work outside, go for a walk, have dinner outside, just be outside! Fresh air, a little nature take it all in!

    5. Connect with a friend - build the tribe!

Be intentional about building these simple things into your daily schedule!
