Film Listology: #91 - The Matrix

"What is real? How do you define, real?" In this episode, cohosts Garret Castleberry and Scott McMurry unpack the wide-reaching cultural significance of 1999's The Matrix. Written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, produced and distributed by Warner Bros., The Matrix redirected popular cinema for the 21st Century through its ingenious remixing of philosophy, theology, and mythology baked into a dystopian action film that also functions as a techno-remix of classical tales like Alice in the Looking Glass and The Wizard of Oz. Has The Matrix faded from the popular imaginary, or does its brief legacy suggest a temporally resonant cultural artifact that  continues to inspire new audiences?

    Hosts: Garret Castleberry, Scott McMurry

Producers: Garret Castleberry, Will McMurry (Audio Engineer), Alli Garner (Cover Art), Austin Foster (Music)

What's really left to say? Plots for an imagined Season 3 are established, a few characters are on the way to a happy ending, and others are kidnapped as if it is destiny that someone must get brought to a BPO lab every season. Just us for our discussion of the most canceled "series finale" we've seen in this week's Chatz8!

"Obligate mutualisms" is just fun to say. Try it! And in this episode of Chatz8, we the hosts become a sort of obligate mutualism with you the listener. You need us to say "Crooms" in a funny voice, we need you to tell us how much we keep predicting and missing crucial plot developments every week. It's a beautiful sort of harmony.

Capheus Onyango is a classic "fictional character I wish was real", Lito and Nomi share an incredibly beautiful tender moment, and the ChatzKidz are frankly eating it right up. Next week, we're finishing Season One of Sense8!

Amanita is a super sleuth, Lito is feeling all the emotions at once, and Chatz is still enjoying Sense8 this week! The episodes are good, the themes are clear, and we imagine a Sense8 that's just the vibes and hanging out without the big conspiracy stuff.

    Midweek Mention... Cloud Atlas

    Midweek Mention... Cloud Atlas

Tom Twyker and the Wachowskis serve up what is surely one of the most ambitious films ever made with 2012's Cloud Atlas. Adapted from David Mitchell's supposedly unfilmable novel, Cloud Atlas follows characters inspired across time by acts of artistic expression in six short stories sharing an incredible cast including one of Sidey's least favourite actors, Tom Hanks, and one of his very favourite, Hugh Grant.

With plenty of plot and thematic content to address in this epic 170 minute movie, there's also the accusations of 'yellowface' to discuss which dogged the film, a sad and uncomfortable aspect of its legacy that would be entirely at odds with the film makers progressive intentions and the contributions of the racially diverse cast.

We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com.

Hugo Weaving: V for Vendetta (2005)

Hugo Weaving: V for Vendetta (2005)

Remember, remember! The Fifth of November...for it is the beginning of Hugo Weaving Month here at Behind the Hype. To kick things off we're starting with the flawed V For Vendetta, which boasts great performances from Weaving and others (see: Creedy), while not necessarily aging all that well. It's tough to root for a a character who gaslights and tortures the female protagonist (Evey, played by Natalie Portman) in a movie with already so few women in it. Doesn't help either that the character of Evey is so passive. That said, the Wachowskis wrote the script and you can feel their hand in a lot of what transpires onscreen.
