BACK TO THE 90s: Reviews of 6 Recent Warner Archive Blu-rays

George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast to review six films from the 1990s to 2000 that released for the first time on Blu-ray.

We start with the animated "Rover Dangerfield," (1991) where Rodney Dangerfield's hallmark humor is impeccably tailored to tickle the funny bones of both kids and adults alike.  Next we review the first film released by MTV Films, "Joe's Apartment," (1996) starring a young Jerry O'Connell and a host of singing cockroaches.

From December we start with the excellent, "Saving Grace" (2000), a Indie darling that should not be forgotten, with standout performances from Brenda Blethyn and Craig Ferguson.  We then review the romp "A Midwinter's Tale" (1995), directed by Kenneth Branagh.  This mock-u-mentary style film is a delightful look behind-the-scenes of indie Shakespearean theater.

We wrap up our reviews with two films released in November.  First is the historical drama "Rapa-Nui" (1994) from Kevin Costner's Tig Productions and directed by Kevin Reynolds.  Filmed on location on Easter Island, this story of Polynesian history is a visual  and dramatic delight.  And our last film is the historical romance "In Love and War" (1996) starring Sandra Bullock and Chris O'Donnell and directed by Richard Attenborough.  This beautifully shot film is based on the true-life romance of a young Earnest Hemingway and his experiences in Italy during World War I.

We provide a review of each film,  the restoration, and all of the extras to help you decide if you want to add it to your physical media collection.

5 Top Shelf Blu-rays From the Warner Archive

5 Top Shelf Blu-rays From the Warner Archive

George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast to review five all-time great classic films released on Blu-ray in December.  We go through each of the films and the included extras to help you decide if you want to add these films to your home collection.

We start with the highly requested  TARZAN, THE APE MAN (1932) from MGM starring Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan.  This terrific casting made this film a hit on its initial release and led to a series of films.  But this is the one that started it all and the new 4K scan means that you now get to see and hear the film in the best condition since its initial release.  The same can be said for our next film, ANNA CHRISTIE (1930) starring Greta Garbo in her first "talkie" film.  Garbo shines, and the film still packs a punch 93 years after its initial release.  Next is the Academy Award-winning film THE GREAT ZIEGFELD (1936) starring the irrepressible William Powell, Best Actress winner Luise Rainer, and Myrna Loy in the biopic on the famous entertainer.  We review all of the extras on this packed disc and George details the restoration and many of the stars of the film.  Our fourth film is the powerful drama MADAME BOVARY (1949), starring Jennifer Jones, Van Heflin, Louis Jourdan, and James Mason.   We discuss the powerful teaming of director Vincente Minnelli and composer Miklos Rozsa and their importance to the film.  And we detail the extras, especially the MGM 25th Anniversary retrospective film.  We wrap up our discussion with the fan favorite GENTLEMAN JIM (1942) starring Errol Flynn in his favorite role and directed by one of his favorite collaborators, director Raoul Walsh.  This is pure entertainment at its best, combining drama, comedy, and sport. The disc is loaded with extras and makes for a tantalizing release.

Four Films From Todd Browning: The Devil Doll, Freaks, The Unknown, & The Mystic

Four Films From Todd Browning: The Devil Doll, Freaks, The Unknown, & The Mystic

Join us for a captivating  discussion of classic horror auteur Tod Browning with George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive, and esteemed film historians, Steve Haberman and Constantine Nasr. Their 20-year-long collaboration started with the DVD release of Mel Brooks’ "Dracula: Dead and Loving It," and has now extended to creating an audio commentary for the upcoming horror/sci-fi film, "The Devil Doll" (1936).  That's the jumping-off point for our discussion and appreciation of four of Tod Browning's films released for the first time on Blu-ray in October.

This episode is also a testament to the importance of preserving and cherishing physical media, highlighted through the restoration of Browning's classic horror masterpiece, "Freaks" (1932), undertaken by the Criterion Collection in partnership with Warner Bros. You don't want to miss George Feltenstein's engaging story about the film master that was used in this restoration, and the fifty-year journey to return it to its rightful owner.  We also dissect the artistry behind Browning's 'The Mystic' (1925) and 'The Unknown' (1927), and the wonderful work Criterion did in restoring and presenting these silent films.

Lastly, we revisit the profound themes present in Browning's films, showcasing the darker aspects of human nature and crime. This episode is a celebration of classic horror cinema and a tribute to the artistry of director Tod Browning.

GAY PURR-EE: Judy Garland, Chuck Jones, and the Fascinating Story Behind this Forgotten Animation Classic

GAY PURR-EE: Judy Garland, Chuck Jones, and the Fascinating Story Behind this Forgotten Animation Classic

GAY PURR-EE (1962) is a forgotten classic of 1960s animation.  But the newly remastered Blu-ray release from the Warner Archive has restored the film to the rich, vibrant colors and sound that showcases the original artistry of Chuck Jones and Judy Garland.

Animation and film historian Jerry Beck, film historian and Judy Garland expert John Fricke, and Warner Bros' George Feltenstein join the podcast to discuss the production history of the film, how Judy Garland was brought on board, and  why the film has struggled to attain the stature it rightly deserves.  We also provide a full review of the stunning new Blu-ray remaster, all of the robust extras, and an explanation of the differences between the film sound and the previously released film soundtrack.

"Gay Purr-ee" was ahead of its time and poorly marketed by UPA and Warner Bros upon its initial release.  While this new Warner Archive Blu-ray cannot rectifiy the past, it showcases the artistry and importance of the film for animation fans, Judy Garland devotees, and film collectors everywhere, and will hopefully lead to a newfound appreciation for the brilliance of the film.

Warner Archive July Blu-ray Reviews Part 1: "The Broadway Melody," "Cimarron" & "DuBarry Was a Lady"

Warner Archive July Blu-ray Reviews Part 1: "The Broadway Melody," "Cimarron" & "DuBarry Was a Lady"

George Feltenstein joins the podcast to review three new July Blu-ray releases from the Warner Archive.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer made every effort to impress with its first talking motion picture, setting a new standard for big-budget films and establishing an archetype for decades of movie musicals to follow in "The Broadway Melody." The Great White Way truly becomes the Street of Broken Dreams when sisters Queenie and Hank Mahoney (Anita Page and Bessie Love) follow Hank's boyfriend, Eddie Kearns (Charles King), to Manhattan with visions of stardom. In New York, Eddie and Queenie are attracted to each other, but unwilling to betray her sister, Queenie dates a feckless cad. Now, Hank must sort out the tangle of aspirations and emotions that form this tragic love triangle. Filled with a memorable score of unforgettable songs by Nacio Herb Brown and Arthur Freed, this was the first sound film to win the Academy Award® for Best Picture (1929-30).
    Purchase THE BROADWAY MELODY

"CIMARRON" the (1931) Academy Award®-winning adaptation of Edna Ferber's novel traces the lives of two people who are in love with each other--but in love with life even more--as they struggle to bring civilization to the Western frontier in Cimarron! 1898. The Oklahoma Land Rush. As thousands of would-be settlers race across a barren desert to be the first to stake their claim to a plot of land, Yancey Cravat (Richard Dix) is cheated out of his property by Dixie Lee (Estelle Taylor). Without the farm they had hoped to start, Yancey and his wife, Sabra (Irene Dunne), take over the local newspaper after the editor is assassinated. But as the newspaper helps bring order to a lawless land, Yancey feels the wanderlust to find new frontiers and new adventures, and Sabra stays to build a publishing empire. Always in love, frequently apart and destined for greatness, Yancey and Sabra lead lives as tempestuous as the land they have chosen for their home in this epic Western classic.
