    The new American Reconstruction

    The new American Reconstruction
Sean Illing talks with historian and author Peniel Joseph about his new book The Third Reconstruction, which argues that the time we're currently living in can be understood as on a continuum with the civil rights era of the '50s and '60s. and the original American Reconstruction following the Civil War. Sean and Peniel discuss the Black Lives Matter movement, the Obama presidency — and important differences between the two — as well as the dangers of American exceptionalism and the importance of maintaining hope in the ongoing fight for racial justice. Beyond The Scenes - The Ongoing Battle to Remove Confederate Statues

Beyond The Scenes - The Ongoing Battle to Remove Confederate Statues

While America has made progress in removing confederate statues from public squares, many remain standing. Director of the PBS documentary The Neutral Ground, CJ Hunt, and founder of Project Say Something, Camille Goldston Bennett, join Roy Wood Jr. to discuss why these monuments were erected in the first place, how many are left, what’s being done on the ground to remove them, and where they should end up once they’re removed.

The Sunday Read: ‘He Wants to Save Classics From Whiteness. Can the Field Survive?’

The Sunday Read: ‘He Wants to Save Classics From Whiteness. Can the Field Survive?’

For years, Dan-el Padilla Peralta, a Dominican-born teacher of classics at Princeton, has spoken openly about the harm caused by the discipline’s practitioners in the two millenniums since antiquity — the classical justifications of slavery, race science, colonialism, Nazism and other 20th-century fascisms.

He believes that classics is so entangled with white supremacy as to be inseparable from it.

Today on The Sunday Read, how Dr. Padilla is trying to change the way the subject is taught.

The Self-Interested Case for Examining Your Biases | John Biewen

The Self-Interested Case for Examining Your Biases | John Biewen
Too often, the process of looking at your biases can be presented like eating your vegetables. But one of the most fascinating and rewarding things I have attempted to do in recent years is to take a good, hard look at my own prejudices and conditioning, especially as a white man. I still screw up all the time. However, one thing that I think is often underplayed is that doing this work can be deeply enjoyable–and can also pay profound dividends.  One of my most important role models here has been John Biewen, host of a podcast called Scene on Radio. The show has had four seasons, but the seasons that have most impacted me are Seasons 2 and 3. Season 2 is called “Seeing White,” in which he explores white people and whiteness. Season 3 is called “Men,” in which he looks at sexism. I was not surprised to learn that John is a meditator, a practice which, he explains, has helped him as he’s done his work. Also: We're offering 40% off the price of an annual subscription to our companion meditation app–also called Ten Percent Happier–for our podcast listeners. We don’t do discounts of this size all the time, and of course nothing is permanent—so get this deal before it ends on April 1st by going to https://www.tenpercent.com/march.  And here’s a link to this weekend's Love & Resilience Summit, where I'll be presenting: https://promo.lionsroar.com/contemplative-care-summit-register/ Full Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/john-biewen-333 See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Brené on Words, Actions, Dehumanization, and Accountability

Brené on Words, Actions, Dehumanization, and Accountability
In this “On My Mind” episode, we talk about shame and accountability. We discussed this a bit last summer, but I’m going deeper today in light of the insurrection at the US Capitol and the resulting calls to unity without accountability. Dehumanization is the most significant driver of insurrection, and it always starts with language. We are all responsible for recognizing it, stopping it, and holding people accountable for dehumanizing language and actions. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Ep. 1106 - The Radioactive Debate Fallout

After an extraordinarily contentious first debate between Trump and Biden, Democrats float cancelling further debates, and the media press forward the accusation that Trump is soft on white supremacy.

Ep. 575 - Biden Is The One Who Needs To Condemn Violent Extremists

Ep. 575 - Biden Is The One Who Needs To Condemn Violent Extremists

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, the media is breathlessly reporting that Trump refused to condemn white supremacists in last night’s debate. It’s a lie. He did condemn them. He’s already condemned them. He’s condemned them many times. Meanwhile, Joe Biden and the rest of the Democrats have actually never condemned the violent extremists in the midst, like BLM and Antifa. That’s the real outrage, considering those groups are currently burning down our cities. Also Five Headlines including an unintentionally hilarious “fact check” on a Babylon Bee article. And in our Daily Cancellation, we’ll cancel the Atlantic for trying to make a scandal out of the fact that Trump allegedly makes fun of televangelists. Who doesn’t?

Ep. 572 - The Craziest And Most Dangerous Conspiracy Theory In America

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, we’ll talk about the most dangerous conspiracy theory in America today. And it’s not the one the media is freaking out about. It’s the conspiracy theory that is currently fueling rioting and anarchy in the streets. Also Five Headlines including BLM and Antifa protesters in LA use cars to chase down an innocent motorist and attack him. And the cops arrest the victim. Then a very special Daily Cancellation segment, dedicated to a very special person.
