Transmission 1991: Danger! Danger! The Dinosaurs are at severe risk of extinction unless they can quickly evolve into a down-tuned, depressed, dirgy, dirty, flannel-wearing anti-dinosaur! Living fossils that once rocked stadiums with shredding guitars, spandex, lipstick, and hair spray have purchased wah-wah pedals and must sing about something other than their love pumps! Listen with extreme caution, as they will surely collapse under the weight of their folly. You have been warned... Whatever…

What’s this InObscuria thing? We’re a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This time around we are bringing you the most lost of the lost. These are songs and albums by artists you know that the artists themselves have tried to lock away and bury! This is the continuation of our series that explores what happens to the dinosaurs when they attempt to follow trends…

    Songs this week include:

    1. BulletBoys – “Diss” from Acid Monkey (1995)
    2. Union – “Heavy D” from Union (1999)
    3. Royal Jelly – “House” from Royal Jelly (1994)

Ep. 160: Grave Mistake: SAIGON KICK Shoulda Been Huge!!!

Ep. 160: Grave Mistake: SAIGON KICK Shoulda Been Huge!!!

This week is our 21st installment of an ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We bring you an in-depth exploration of another band that fits into our category of being an “in-betweener”: the amazingly awesome SAIGON KICK! This band straddled the world of the 80s hard n’ heavy and the 90s alternative n’ grunge. Like their touring buddies Extreme, they got a major hit with a ballad in the early 90s and got pigeonholed as a ballad band when they weren’t that at all. We think this band should have been alongside Alice In Chains and STP… They Shoulda Been Huge!!!

This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we have featured on the show before and exist in a category that we discussed at length back in Episode 133 – The Inbetweeners. They’re from Robert’s home state of Florida, but will our Florida-Man agree with Kevin’s assessment and status of “Shoulda Been Huge”??? Have a listen and find out for yourself.

    Songs this week include:

    1. Saigon Kick – “Coming Home” from Saigon Kick (1991)
    2. Saigon Kick – “Hostile Youth” from The Lizard (1992)
    3. Saigon Kick – “On And On” from Water (1993)
    4. Saigon Kick – “Eden” from Devil In The Details (1995)
    5. Saigon Kick - “Dizzy’s Vine” from Moments From The Fringe (1997)
    6. Saigon Kick – “Solitary Jerk” from Bastards (1999)
    7. Super Transatlantic – “Shuttlecock” from Shuttlecock (2000)

Ep. 152: Grave Mistake: RAGING SLAB Shoulda Been Huge!!!

Ep. 152: Grave Mistake: RAGING SLAB Shoulda Been Huge!!!

This week we celebrate our 20th installment of an ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. We bring you an in-depth exploration of an awesome boogie metal / southern rock n’ punk band from the grimy & gritty NYC Lower East Side of the 1980s: RAGING SLAB! This band featured equal parts Skynyrd and Metallica complete with a kick-ass bottleneck slide lead guitar. Touring with a cross-section of bands like Chili Peppers, Ramones, Molly Hatchet, GnR, and Warrant while boasting a southern rock stomp pre-dating The Black Crowes; we think this band Shoulda Been Huge!!!

This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that we featured on the show earlier this year during our exploration of Genres From The Netherworld (Ep. 137). Robert enjoyed them so much, he asked that they be revisited at some point. Unfortunately, their amazing brand of boogie metal was never recognized to the degree that it deserved; partly due to a series of unfortunate incidences and pure bad luck.

    Songs this week include:

    1. Raging Slab – “Mr. Lucky” from Assmaster (1987)
    2. Raging Slab – “Get Off My Jollies” from True Death (1988)
    3. Raging Slab – “Bent For Silver” from Raging Slab (1989)
    4. Raging Slab – “Lord Have Mercy” from Dynamite Monster Boogie Concert (1993)
    5. Raging Slab - “C’mon N’ On” from Sing Monkey Sing (1996)
    6. Raging Slab – “Sir Lord Ford…” from The Dealer (2001)
    7. Raging Slab – “Ruby” from (Pronounced Eat-Shit) (2002)
    8. Raging Slab – “Bury Me Deep” from (Pronounced Eat-Shit) (2002)

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E45

The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E45

Episode 45 of Season 5 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 10 Nov 2022.  The show kicked off with ACDC and a track off Let There Be Rock called ‘Overdose’.  From there we continued with Black Stone Cherry, Def Leppard, and White Zombie.  We went into the ‘00s and cranked the Nu Metal with Drowning Pool and the title track off the Sinner album, the one that gave the world 'Bodies' and 'Broken Home' off Papa Roach’s Infest album.  Strangely enough, we went from that into some mellow blues, courtesy of Popa Chubby and ZZ Top with Trouble and Blue Jean Blues respectively.  It was the Papa to Popa connection that did it.

From the Blues, we checked out Iron Maiden and another track off Power Slave called ‘Back In the Village’.  Herman Frank, ex of Accept got a look-in with a track off his latest album Two For a Lie.  We stayed in Germany for some Rammstein and a bit later 'Blackout' from Scorpions, another song written about Eskom.  A highlight of the show was the back-to-back pairing of Tony Martin and Joe Lynn Turner, two vocalists who have played in the best bands in the world and have both released solo alums in the last 12 months.  Joe Lynn Turner has Peter Tägtgren producing and doing the guitar work and it is one hell of a combination.  We had some more Nu Metal courtesy of Limp Bizkit and then used Courtney Love’s band Hole,  with a track called 'Rock Star' to lead us into a quick farewell and RIP to Nazareth’s Dan McCafferty who passed away this week.  As explained on the show Nazareth are a very special band to those of us growing up in the '70s and '80s and we thanked Dan for writing and performing some awesome classic songs.

We took in 'When Your Love is Gone' by Assie legend Jimmy Barnes and then spent nearly nine minutes on the Thin Lizzy classic ‘Still In Love With You’.  It came off the Live album called Life and features all the Thin Lizzy guitarists Eric Bell, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson, Gary Moore, Snowy White, and John Sykes.  Texas Hippie Coalition moved the show out of the ballads and Night Ranger and Queensrÿche continued the excellent medicine and took it to the next level.  The new Queensrÿche, Digital Noise Alliance' is fantastic, check it out.  This show just had too much material and not enough time.  We tipped the hat to Judas Priest for their well-deserved and long overdue inclusion into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, we listened to another awesome Vivian Campbell solo and heard how powerful Andrew Freeman is on a track called ‘Year of The Gun’ and we squeezed in an amazingly emotional track from My Chemical Romance called 'The World is Ugly'.  The consensus on the chat was that MCR are correct on this point.  Cheers all, see you next week, I hope you enjoy the episode.

Artists featured:  ACDC, Black Stone Cherry, Def Leppard, White Zombie, Drowning Pool, Papa Roach, Popa Chubby, ZZ Top, Iron Maiden, Herman Frank, Rammstein, Anthrax, Dead City Ruins, Burning Rain, Skid Row, Five Finger Death Punch, Scorpions, Tony Martin, Joe Lynn Turner, Leslie West Tribute, Limp Bizkit, Hole, Nazareth, The Gaslight Anthem, Jimmy Barnes, Thin Lizzy, Texas Hippie Coalition, Night Ranger, Queensrÿche, Halestorm, Judas Priest, Last In Line, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Johnny Cash, In Flames

What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection; an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. Robert is forced to test his endurance and provide feedback, as he has no idea what he will be subjected to every week. Our hope is that we turn you on to something that was lost on your ears, or something you've simply forgotten about, or that (in our opinion) should have been the next big thing.

At the end of 1992, Rock City Cafe was no more. Instead of getting out of the music business all together, they started doing shows at "Alcatraz" in South OKC. This club was decorated like a prison & held numerous legendary shows, like White Zombie & Monster Magnet, Dream Theater & more. Max recalls having an AA meeting with Aerosmith on their private plane at Will Rogers Airport.

Ep. 126: Beneath The Hair Vol. 4 - Forgotten Glam Metal - White-Out

Ep. 126: Beneath The Hair Vol. 4 - Forgotten Glam Metal - White-Out

Bleach that hair and spray that Aquanet, as we once again dive hair-first into the world of obscure glam metal. Whether you call it: glam metal, hair metal, cock rock, or hard rock… this time we are focusing on bands that include the color “white” in their band name. For some reason, Whitesnake, White Lion, and Great White all had tremendous success around the exact same time in the mid-to-late 80s. Was there luck in the name? Were there more “white…” bands out there at the same time?

What are we all about here at InObscuria? Every week your two hosts crawl down to the crypts to exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. If you dig it… go dig it up and buy it! Support these artists and keep your devil horns high in the air!

    Songs this week include:

    1. White Tiger – “White Hot Desire” from White Tiger (1986)
    2. White Heat – “Rock And A Hard Place” from Demo (1988)

Ep. 123: Grave Mistake: WARRIOR SOUL Shoulda Been Huge!!! Pt.2! Part

This week we continue our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This is Part 2 of our exploration and exploitation of the sleazy Detroit Punk meets NY Metal sounds of the amazing WARRIOR SOUL! This band straddled the world of the 80s hard n’ heavy and the 90s alternative n’ grunge during the first decade of their career. An American alternative metal band, formed by lead singer, songwriter, producer, and painter: Kory Clarke. Unfortunately, their brilliance and innovation have never been recognized to the degree that it deserves. We think they SHOULD BE HUGE… and we are ready to fly that banner proudly!

Ep. 110: Old In The 90's - What Were They Thinking?

Ep. 110: Old In The 90's - What Were They Thinking?

    1. Warrant - “Family Picnic” from Ultraphobic (1995)
    2. L.A. Guns - “Long Time Dead” from Vicious Circle (1993)
    3. 2wo - “Stutter Kiss” from Voyeurs (1997)
    4. Dangerous Toys - “Cure The Lane” from The R*tist 4*merly Known as Dangerous Toys (1995)
    5. The Cult - “Coming Down (Drug Tongue)” from The Cult (1994)
    6. Dokken - “Puppets On A String” from Shadowlife (1997)
    7. Krunk - “Bent” from Greatest Hits (1997)
    8. Danger Danger - “Helicopter” from Dawn (1995)
