Mental healing - how my mind has controlled my body pre & post WLS

Hi loves! My bravest podcast yet. I talk about my mental struggles and challenges over the course of my life and how this has affected me pre and post weight-loss surgery. Losing weight did not solve the patterns and behaviours in my mind. I am still very much so on a healing journey in how I combat my anxiety not through food for the first time in my life.

The Impact of Food Guilt After WLS Episode 205

The Impact of Food Guilt After WLS Episode 205

Kellie and Mel sit down on their own in this episode and chat about all things “food guilt.”

Mel begins the episode with a recent encounter with food and the spiral of guilt, justification, self-sabotage, and punishment she experienced after the event.

They unpack several challenges related to eating “off plan” or consuming non-nutrient dense foods after weight loss surgery and what comes up for them as influencers in the community. They discuss their history of food restriction, comfort eating in times of stress and dysregulation, and the various levels of guilt they feel after eating certain foods.

Kellie and Mel encourage you to seek peer support and therapy if you feel guilty for eating “off plan” and need help finding a way out of the cycle of self-belittling thoughts. Discussing your feelings with others and getting them out of your head allows you to understand WHY you are in this cycle and HOW to recognize and work through it.

Obesity is a Medical Condition? Interview w/Obesity Medicine Association Dr. Lydia Alexander Episode 199

Obesity is a Medical Condition? Interview w/Obesity Medicine Association Dr. Lydia Alexander Episode 199

Kellie and Mel recently interviewed the President-Elect of the Obesity Medicine Association, Dr. Lydia Alexander, to discuss obesity and the work she does to bring awareness to the disease. The discussion is so full of valuable information we had to break it into two episodes.

In this episode, Dr. Alexander explains how genetic predispositions, hormone imbalances, insulin resistance, environmental factors, food marketing, and our current food supply all contribute to obesity. She describes obesity as a disease – not simply a matter of willpower.

Dr. Alexander illustrates how biology drives our behaviors and breaks down a cycle of cause and effect happening within our bodies. She talks about inflammation in the body and how it turns on itself, causing a multitude of comorbidities.

It's a fascinating, enlightening, and extremely informative conversation that you will want to listen to more than once!

Dr. Lydia C. Alexander practices obesity medicine as the Cheif Medical Officer at Enara Health. She is a fellow and diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. Dr. Alexander received her B.A. from Tufts University in International Relations and Spanish with a minor in Political Science and her M.D. from UC Davis School of Medicine. She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. Dr. Alexander was the recipient of the 2018 Obesity Medicine Clinician of the Year Award and the 2019 Dr. Raymond E. Dietz Meritorious Service Award.

Dr. Alexander is passionate about the practice of obesity medicine and committed to working with the Obesity Medicine Association to further its mission, including educating primary care providers about the benefits of taking a weight-centric approach when addressing chronic diseases. Dr. Alexander is currently the President-Elect of the Obesity Medicine Association (OMA).

Realistic Expectations for Weight Loss Surgery Success - Interview with Ashlyn Bariatric Therapist Episode 193

Realistic Expectations for Weight Loss Surgery Success - Interview with Ashlyn Bariatric Therapist Episode 193

This episode is packed with helpful information, therapeutic strategies, and personal anecdotes from a bariatric patient turned bariatric therapist. Ashlyn Douglass-Barns, LCSW, had RNY over ten years ago and has been a therapist for 12 years, focusing on bariatrics for the last three years.

Kellie, Mel, and Ashlyn discuss Ashlyn’s personal bariatric journey, her use of GLP1 hormone therapy to assist with weight loss and maintenance, and her transition to becoming a bariatric-focused therapist.

They dive into various topics: eating carbs and changing the mindset around food, the stigma of weight loss surgery, and setting patients up to have realistic expectations after weight loss surgery. They also examine transfer addiction to alcohol, some behavioral patterns that may change due to WLS and past trauma, and changes in familial support after surgery that may impact bariatric patients.

There was so much covered in this episode that Kellie and Mel already have plans to bring Ashlyn back to discuss the effects of alcohol on bariatric patients in more depth.

Ashlyn Douglass-Barnes, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker in her private practice at Advance Bariatric Counseling. She works with pre-op bariatric patients to complete the required psychological evaluation and post-op bariatric patients who need continued therapy after weight loss surgery. She also helps therapists pursue a focus on bariatric counseling with her course, Learn Bariatric Psychological Assessments.

How Often and How Much to Eat after Weight Loss Surgery - Interview with Amanda Clark Episode 186

How Often and How Much to Eat after Weight Loss Surgery - Interview with Amanda Clark Episode 186

Amanda, with Portion Perfection, is back on the podcast to talk about meal structure.

Kellie, Mel, and Amanda discuss how often and when to eat throughout the day. Amanda explains why several smaller meals are ideal for controlling weight, mood, cholesterol, and blood sugar. She describes how much protein, vegetables, and starches are ideal for weight loss patients and suggests consuming various vegetables to get diverse minerals and vitamins through our food.

OSLP TIP: get Portion Perfection plates and bowls to train your mind and tiny tummy on proper portions.

Amanda illustrates the differences between snacks versus a full meal and the calorie breakdown of both options. She ends the episode by discussing the importance of consistency and planning ahead to help set patients up for long-term success. This lifestyle is possible and sustainable with work and making small changes every day.
