Addressing the Struggle: Women, Pornography and the Path to Grace with Jessica Harris

Addressing the Struggle: Women, Pornography and the Path to Grace with Jessica Harris

Picture this: A 13-year-old girl, curious and eager to understand her burgeoning sexuality, finds herself descending into the throes of hardcore pornography. Sounds shocking, right? But this isn't a scene from a disturbing novel, it's the real-life story of Jessica Harris. A long-time friend, Jessica joins us in an exceptionally candid discussion about her own struggle with pornography and how it led her into a vortex of shame and addiction. We delve into the often-overlooked aspect of female interaction with pornography and how it can seem like a "safe" exploration of sexuality.

Together, we bring to light the power of God's grace for women battling with pornography, shattering misconceptions and addressing the unusual challenges pornography can impose on a marriage. We emphasize the importance of vulnerability and the magic of open communication in a marriage when dealing with struggles like these. Jessica's insights into how pornography can hinder our innate desires for acceptance, intimacy, and unconditional love are both enlightening and thought-provoking. But far from a gloomy discourse, our conversation is ultimately infused with hope and optimism. We assure you that freedom and God's grace are attainable, even in the midst of the struggle with pornography. So lean in, listen closely, and prepare to see this issue from a whole new perspective.

Diet Culture in the Church: Featuring Leslie Schilling

Diet Culture in the Church: Featuring Leslie Schilling

Leslie Schilling returns for part two of an insightful and thought-provoking conversation. In this episode, Leslie and host Heather Creekmore discuss the challenging promises of diet culture and the importance of accepting and respecting diverse body types. They delve into the factors that influence weight, including medications, illnesses, and surgeries, and debunk the myth that body weight can be changed through willpower alone.

The conversation takes a deep dive into the spread of diets like OPTAVIA and Gwen Shamblin's Weigh Down Workshop in churches, and the concerning trend of pastors and community members leading others towards these restrictive eating plans.

Leslie reflects on her own journey from placing hope in diets to realizing that Jesus is the only rescue needed. The episode also explores the intersection of faith, health, and accessibility to nutritious food. Leslie highlights the privilege of easy access to grocery stores and acknowledges that not everyone has the same advantages. She challenges the notion that nutrition should be the sole focus of our relationship with God, reminding listeners that social determinants of health, trauma, and medications greatly impact one's well-being.

Throughout the conversation, Leslie and Heather touch on various topics including shame, the objectification of women within Christian communities, the impact of purity culture, and the intergenerational transmission of body image issues and eating disorders. They also express excitement about Leslie's new book which tackles these issues in an unprecedented way and delves into the infiltration of diet culture in safe spaces like schools.

Listeners are encouraged to question external controls and seek inner wisdom, as well as to challenge the messages of diet culture that pervade churches and places of worship. need for safe spaces that promote body acceptance and eliminate harmful messaging tied to worthiness. Ultimately, this conversation serves as a call to remove the lens of diet culture from our interpretation of biblical teachings and to prioritize loving well above arbitrary standards of appearance and perfection.

Did Paul Command Women to be Silent in Church? [Part 1] (03)

Did Paul Command Women to be Silent in Church? [Part 1] (03)

Welcome to episode 3 of the recently re-launched Grace Cafe Podcast! In this episode we continue the series we started last time concerning women in the church. This week we start to explore the question, did Paul command women to be silent in church? This episode is a much needed overview of what the New Testament says about women in the body of Christ. We look at several of the clear passages of scripture to lay a good foundation for this topic before jumping into the sometimes not-so-clear waters of 1 Timothy chapter 2 and 1 Corinthians 14 next time.

We are breaking this question up into multiple parts because there is so much to work through in getting a clear understanding of this topic and we don't want to rush past anything in sorting it out. So this is part one of Did Paul Command Women to be Silent in Church? Grab your favorite beverage and listen in!

Patriarchy and Its Affects on Women and Men (02)

Patriarchy and Its Affects on Women and Men (02)

Welcome to episode 2 of The Grace Cafe podcast! In this episode we're launching a multi-part series centered around the topic of women in the church and how church history and tradition have damaged and diminished the way women can function within the body of Christ. We start in this episode by talking about patriarchy and how it has damaged women by taking away their voice and individuality. We share from our personal experiences with patriarchy as we believe so much error has flowed out of this system that it needs addressed first.

Grab your favorite beverage and listen in as we see where this series takes us. And thank you all for the overwhelming response we've received from this relaunch of The Grace Cafe!

Summer Top Ten: The Role of Women in the Church

Summer Top Ten: The Role of Women in the Church

God get's a lot of bad press when it comes to women. Many accuse him and the church as being sexist and demeaning to women. But going back to the worldview of "Creator and Creation" -- God is allowed to define his creation and the order he chooses that it should live by. This week, Pastor Tim wraps up the Summer Top Ten series by addressing the role of women in the church.

TPP #52 | The Seen & Unseen with Ruth Lorensson

Ruth was a pleasure to talk to about what it looks like in the unseen.  We have all been there, felt lonely, yearning for connection, and desiring someone to truly see us.  But Ruth challenges us that in the unseen we are even more loved by God and that He is doing miraculous work through us in those seasons.

Ruth shares about her 25-year journey of being in ministry, preaching, strategy, and building a non-profit in England to find herself in the US wondering if she will ever make friends or be seen again. After walking through these unseen seasons she knows it isn't comfortable, yet there is healing

God had to show me the small, which is so huge in His kingdom. He had to show me the value of those hidden, small everyday things we do that make massive waves into the Kingdom of God. - Ruth Lorensson

It is challenging to realize the spiritual significance that the unknown can have on our life, but I hope after hearing my conversation with Ruth, you will be encouraged by her wisdom to see God in the unseen parts of your life too.

TPP #44 | If I Can't, Is God Enough? with Tonya Annis

TPP #44 | If I Can't, Is God Enough? with Tonya Annis

Being willing doesn't come easy for most of us.  I am always willing to go for a cheeseburger or iced caramel latte. But, being willing to accept the direction and circumstances God allows in my life. Umm, not so much.  Willingness is scary, submissive and you are going to need patience.

Meet my new friend Tonya Annis who leads the 1825 Ministry at her home church in Jacksonville, FL.  I enjoyed her perspective on what this next generation looks like and can we love them well.  She gives insight into how we as adults break down the conversation of purpose and provision and find common ground.

When a season of her life caused change, Tonya had to wrestle with the truth about who God says she is, her gifts and if that doesn't play out in her life, "is God still good?"  Her journey is one most of us can relate to when change occurs in our world.

Tonya has been in ministry for 17 years and we talk about the positive and challenging parts of being a woman in the church.  What does that role look like for her and how has she gone to God for guidance.  Please enjoy this parable conversation with, Tonya Annis.

    Reflection Questions

    1. What would it take for you to tell God you are willing regardless of whatever circumstances are in your life?

    2. How can you go first with someone this week?

Women Making a Sound For God

Women Making a Sound For God

#082// Do you believe women can make a sound into the earth for Jesus and His Kingdom? How about into the Church?

If you're a woman who's got a sound on your life to make for Jesus and His Kingdom, you've got to be confident in making that sound. With so much debate in the church today around whether women are "allowed" to teach or preach, finding your confidence can be a little tricky. So, what does the Bible have to say about women making a sound for God? And what happens when we don't know the truth but keep trying to make a sound anyway? Spoiler Alert: It isn't good!

On this episode of the Positioned to Prosper podcast we're taking a quick tour of some general passages of scripture that pertain to women sharing the gospel and making a sound for Jesus, and then we'll dig a bit deeper into Ezekiel 13 to examine what it looks like when you go "off message" as you make your sound. There's lots to cover here, so if you're ready to get into this somewhat provocative discussion, I want you to grab your Bible, your journal and a pen, and . . . Let's Go!

TPP #33 | Here for a Reason with Olivia Munn-Shirsath

TPP #33 | Here for a Reason with Olivia Munn-Shirsath

I happened to be scrolling through Instagram one day, as one does, and I stopped on a video of Olivia Munn-Shirsath preaching.  Her delivery is passionate, encouraging, and hopeful and I knew I needed to talk with her about her story.  So grateful she was able to sit down and talk about women in the church.  Olivia is one of the teaching pastors at Wellspring Church in Queens, New York and I appreciated she shared some of the same feelings I had about being a woman who preached the word of God.  Initially, I struggled internally with speaking to both men and women.  I didn't have a biblical studies degree, I never wrote a book, and I am certainly not a man.  Olivia shared an instance where God gave her certain gifts and came to the realization that our lives matter for a greater purpose. One lovely statement I will take away from this conversation is her quote.

Holiness is the solution to every problem. - Olivia Shirsath

She may have written that as a confident 18-year-old, but that holds true for all of us today.  As we wrestle with our lives and problems that will continue to bubble up, our source in Christ and His Holiness is the solution to every problem.  Ultimately giving us a simple check and balance to discover if we choosing to live in holiness or straying away.

    Reflection Questions

    1. What would it look like if you chose to stop talking and start listening more?  Practice that this week with your time with God.

    2. Meditate on Olivia's statement, "Holiness is the solution to every problem." and think about whatever situation keeps bubbling to the surface.  Do you need to draw closer to God's holiness?

    6. Let's talk about marriage and submission. Would you walk us through Ephesians 5? (@44:34)
    7. Let's talk about feminism. One of your specialties is feminist theology. What is that, and is it biblical to be a feminist? (@53:43)
    8. What resources would you recommend for people who want to study this topic further? (@57:49)

Come back next week as James and I debrief this episode and talk about our personal thoughts on this topic!
