Evan Mandery is a professor, lawyer, (former standup comedian!) and the author of eight books.

His latest work, Poison Ivy: How Elite Colleges Divide Us is available for purchase at all reputable (and even some disreputable) booksellers. I highly recommend you go out and pick up a copy of this important book.

    From this episode you’ll learn…

Evan’s definition of a UNIVERSITY, and whether or not it is, in its current state, still identifiable with that definition; the benefits of AFFIRMATIVE ACTION; how wasteful most college sports teams really are; why we should loathe lacrosse; the problem with LEGACY admissions; what’s going on with administrative bloat; what to do about CANCEL CULTURE on campus; if Donald Trump’s indictment is serious; if the ex-president will go to jail?; how to write a work of fiction; how to survive as a Classical Liberal in WOKE academia; how elite universities exacerbate INEQUALITY in America; if the Ivy League Brand has lost its appeal; if Stanford has permanently sullied its reputation…

    And MUCH more!

Cozy Horror? What are you writing?

Cozy Horror? What are you writing?

Cozy Horror? Is that a thing?

How well do you understand your genre?

Genre is the broad category where your books would be shelved in the physical bookstores. Sub-genre is the narrow niche category of books as they're grouped on ebook retailers, often defined by tropes, protagonist age, and writing style.

    Why should you care?

In this episode, Greta and Megan take a deep dive into story genre, and how it affects your story structure and craft. We talk about why you have to know your specific sub-genre, how to do your research, and how to find clarity for your story.

Final Question: What are you writing? Have you identified your target reader? Let's chat on the Facebook page @AuthorWheel!

Epistolary Storytelling: Letters, Diaries, Found Footage

Epistolary Storytelling: Letters, Diaries, Found Footage

Found footage, letters to a loved one, and many more are discussed in this episode about this classical but nontraditional method of storytelling.

Here we discuss different ways storywriters can use “found footage” and the “epistolary” (letter, journal) formats. It’s hard to describe, but novels, film, games—one innovative technique is to use environmental materials (like invented newspaper excerpts, letters, tapes) to give an interactive experience within a story. We’ll go into several examples of “found footage” stories which might give you some ideas for new story forms. (That’s funny, because the epistolary is one of the oldest novel forms, dating back to the 17th Century!)

    Examples: Robinson Crusoe (journal)

    Bridget Jones's Diary

    Blair Witch Project

Recognize The Muse of inspiration when it shows up. With author Arjay Lewis

Author Arjay Lewis wrote a book titled "The Muse", one of fifteen novels he's published during a career that's generated thirty-two writing awards ... so far. One of his own "charmed moments" came when he wrote a book called "The Dark", and the inspiration came by way of Stephen King. He describes that creative spark and then shares his thoughts on the nature of creativity, the habits that keep the ideas flowing, the value he's found in following Julia Cameron's advice in her book The Artist's Way, and his tips for editing and revising fiction.
