Ep 136 Healing Chronic Illness with Writing Groups with Kristen Hutchison

Kristen Hutchison is a writer, patient advocate, and a passionate supporter of healthcare reform. She's received her bachelor's of science in biology and psychology from Santa Clara University, and recently completed a year-long medical writing program through Harvard Medical School. She has also completed certifications in somatic therapy, and trauma-informed yoga.

Kristen was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis when she was in high school, and has lived with the condition for over 15 years. During one of the lows points in her medical journey, when the UC was flaring severely, Kristen started journaling. She felt isolated as a young woman with an invisible chronic illness, and needed an outlet to express herself. Kristen knows of the healing power of sharing our stories, and gathering in community to be seen and understood.

Kristen's inaugural writing group starts on February 15th from 6-7:30 pm CST. Virtually or in-person at Sankalpa in Bloomington. We plan to meet monthly!

    Episode 51. Jennifer in Oregon

Since this is the last episode of season 2 and I am putting this podcast in a hiatus (possibly permanently) I wanted to tell my mom's story. Today we will be talking about my mom, Bobbie Lee, and she passed away on August 24, 2020. My mom had Alzheimer's from a Traumatic Brain Injury and she'd been in a memory care since October 2018. She was a feisty lady and general good health, despite the Alzheimer's, when her memory care was shut down to visitors due to COVID.

My mom got COVID in August 2020 in an outbreak at her memory care. It was brought in by an employee, which was one of my worst fears. She was moved to a COVID nursing home where she died about 10 days later.

This podcast has been in honor of her memory, the family members of every person I've interviewed and everyone who has died of COVID, complications, Long COVID, etc.

    Think Before You Act

    Think Before You Act

In this episode of Navigate The Day, we delve into the importance of listening to your inner voice. As we explore the quote by Heraclitus, "For to be wise is only one thing—to fix our attention on our intelligence, which guides all things everywhere", we consider the power of our intelligence and the need to trust and cultivate it. We reflect on the importance of pausing to listen to our inner voice, especially when faced with new impressions and the risk of acting impulsively without reason.

Meditation is one tool that can help us achieve a clearer mind and better awareness of our emotions and physical reactions. However, like any habit, consistent practice is key in seeing the benefits. We discuss the struggles of balancing the need for a clear mind with the realities of everyday life and the importance of noticing when we ignore our inner voice.

In conclusion, we remind ourselves of the need to live our lives under our terms and not let outside factors control us. By paying attention to our inner voice and cultivating our intelligence, we hope to make choices that align with our goals and aspirations.

    On Being Invincible

    On Being Invincible

In this episode of "Navigate The Day," I dive into the concept of being invincible by exploring my power to choose. The quote by Epictetus, "Who then is invincible? The one who cannot be upset by anything outside of their reasoned choice," sets the tone for my discussion.

I reflect on my own journey towards cultivating invincibility and share my experiences with losing my cool and how I've been working on handling my emotions better. I also talk about the importance of identifying my values and priorities in life, and using that as a framework for making decisions.

I highlight the significance of information gathering and considering the pros and cons before making a decision. I also emphasize that developing reasoned choice takes practice and patience, but by being intentional and consistent in my decision-making process, I can improve my ability to make well-thought-out choices.

I draw inspiration from the teachings of ancient stoics and modern stoics such as Ryan Holiday to live better and become invincible to the struggles of life. I remind myself that the journey towards invincibility takes time and patience, but the work is worth it, and with time and practice, I will become stronger and more resilient to the challenges life throws at me.

You Don’t have to Stay On Top Of Everything

You Don’t have to Stay On Top Of Everything

"You don’t have to stay on top of everything." That's the quote from Epictetus that inspired today's episode. The truth is, there's a lot of information and distractions in our lives that don't actually matter, and it's okay to be clueless about them. In fact, it's more than okay, it's liberating. When we free ourselves from the pressure of knowing everything, we open up more time and energy for what truly matters to us.

I personally embrace being clueless about things that don't matter, like popular TV shows and movies. During the pandemic, I filled my days with activities that were more meaningful to me, like working on home projects and taking care of my lawn. I don't struggle with FOMO anymore. Our time is limited, and we shouldn't waste it on things that don't align with our values.

Growth begins when we take the time to consider what's important to us, and being content with not knowing everything gives us the power to control our focus and attention. Trying to stay on top of everything distracts us from our goals and drains our mental energy. Media is designed to keep our attention at all costs, but we have the power to choose what we give our attention to.

It's natural for us to seek comfort, even in bad habits, and to pay attention to things that aren't necessarily important to us. But it's important to remember that what interests others may not be what's best for us, and vice versa. By freeing ourselves from the unnecessary worries about what others think of us, we can focus on ourselves, our values, and our goals.

In conclusion, embracing the idea of being clueless about things that don't matter, and not caring about them, allows us to live more present and focused lives. I plan to continue filtering the information that comes into my life, and only pursuing what I truly believe is worth my time and energy.

What Can I Put Outside My Circle Of Control?

What Can I Put Outside My Circle Of Control?

In today's episode of Navigate The Day, I delve into the concept of control and how it relates to achieving serenity. I discuss the Stoic philosophy that the only thing within our control is our mind and our ability to make reasoned choices. I share my personal experience of how journaling has helped me to understand the difference between what I can control and what I cannot, and how this understanding has led to greater peace and serenity in my life.

I talk about how journaling has helped me to identify patterns in my thinking, and to take control of my reactions to events by becoming more mindful and living in the present moment. I share examples of things that I have put outside my circle of control, such as my physical well-being, my family, and my financial state and how it helped me to focus on what I can control, such as my thoughts, my will and my choices.

I remind my listeners (mainly me) that the path to serenity is not a one-time journey but a constant practice and through journaling, we can have a companion that can guide us through it.

    The One Path To Serenity

    The One Path To Serenity

In today's episode of Navigate The Day, I reflect on my journey towards serenity through journaling. I discuss the importance of letting go of things out of my control and making reasoned choices that lead to peace. I share my personal experience of working a long shift and how it serves as a reminder that I can't control everything but I can focus on what is in my control. I share my insights about how through journaling, I am constantly reflecting on what is in or out of my control and learning to accept the latter, and how this is helping me on my path towards serenity.

If You Want To Be Unsteady

If You Want To Be Unsteady

In today's episode, I explore the sources of unsteadiness in my life and how I can address them. I reflect on how losing sight of what is within my control and what isn't can lead to feelings of unsteadiness. At first, I attribute this to external factors such as work and finances, but I ultimately realize that all unsteadiness comes from within. I recognize that my environment does not determine my level of calm, stability, or serenity, and that these instead are directly related to my judgment and reasoned choices. I acknowledge that taking responsibility for my own emotions can be difficult but also empowering. I commit to making a concerted effort to avoid harmful and disruptive judgments that cause more trouble and instead to focus on what's within my sphere of choice, in order to achieve stillness and peace. I encourage others to also take their lives back into their own hands, and to regulate how they handle themselves, as this has an impact on their environment.

HOST JACKIE TANTILLO- Needing Room To Breathe with Guest Poet Richard Fireman

HOST JACKIE TANTILLO- Needing Room To Breathe with Guest Poet Richard Fireman

Clare was born in New York City yet her parents were originally from Ukraine. Rich is a very warm and caring son. Looking back, Rich would like to have asked his mom "what she was so worried about all the time."

Looking back, my guest also has regrets for his mom's lack of happiness and wellbeing. As a teen he was more concerned with himself than the welfare of his mom. In hindsight,  he wishes she had taken better care of herself- had more friends, etc.

As a young girl, Clare's mother, Rich's maternal grandmother, put a lot of pressure on Clare to practice her music. Clare was a phenomenal concert pianist.  She studied piano from a young age and within a few years she suddenly quit playing the piano, defiant to her mother's constant nagging.

Rich's mom was overprotected and as he says "kind of spoiled." Interestingly enough, Clare was overprotected by her own mother and then did something similar to her only son. Rich refers to it as a "constant hovering."  As a result, Rich created his own  internal world  or a world of imagination which he found at the library and through books.

A college professor recognized that Rich  showed some true talent in his poetry and encouraged him to pursue it. Today, Rich is a poet and has almost one hundred poems published in the Monmouth Review (Monmouth University) and two in the International Journal of Poetry Therapy and several in other literary publications.

Twenty years since his mom's death, he looks back fondly on his memories of his mom . His memories don't rattle him as much now. He's embracing the whole picture of her life and not just the last five years that she endured Alzheimer's.

Richard's forthcoming book of poetry "Constellations" due to be published late 2022.

"Constellations are our attempt to make sense of the universe.

We create patterns in the sky, trying to understand what God might mean,

and write our stories as if we knew.

These poems are my constellations. The words are stars.

May their light be a guide to find your way home."

    - Richard Fireman

"Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers and the roles they play in our lives. And my guests answer the question, 'are you who you are today because of, or in spite of, your mother'? You'll be amazed at what the responses are.

"Should Have Listened To My Mother" would not be possible without the generosity, sincerity and insight from my guests. In getting ready to launch my podcast, so many were willing to give their time and share their personal relationships with their mother.

Some of my guests include Baritone Singer Christopheren Nomura, Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist Tim Wacker, Activist Kim Miller, Freighter Sea Captain Terry Viscount, Film Production Manager Peg Robinson, Professor of Writing Montclair State University Dr. Bridget Brown, Tammy Steckler, attorney and family advocate @CUNY Law; NYC First Responder/NYC Firefighter Mark Heingartner, Child and Adult Special Needs Activist, Maryellen Valyo Cole and Roger Evens, Property Manager in New Jersey and so many more talented and insightful women and men.

I've worked in the broadcasting industry for over four decades. I've interviewed so many fascinating people including musicians, celebrities, authors, activists, entrepreneurs, politicians and more.

A big thank you goes to Ricky Soto, NYC based Graphic Designer, who created my logo for "Should Have Listened To My Mother".

Removing Distraction (hack?) Via Writing To Fix Sleep Issues & Mind Racing #gamechanger (💤 + 🌧️)

Removing Distraction (hack?) Via Writing To Fix Sleep Issues & Mind Racing #gamechanger (💤 + 🌧️)
It's super rare that I dive deep into the tank of my thoughts to provide (what I believe) unorthodox insights and teachings for the sake of good. Might I be changing for the better? I dunno. Anyways, if you have constant mind-chatter and mind-racing, listening to this episode and practicing mindful journaling as instructed quite possibly will bring unbridled clarity. And we all sure could use that right about now. This exercise has worked for me in not just expanding myself, but has helped provide a sense of ease when sleeping. I reflect on my previous sleeping issues since childhood and found a significant pattern. My mind is always distracted, either with consuming too much content/media/life/learning without actually producing (compartmentalizing thoughts). This, in turn, combined with my ADHD, often left me in a whirlwind of thoughts, restlessness, and uncertainty. It's not totally fixed, the art of sleep is a neverending journey, but if this helps you make significant strides, then I'll be super happy for you. Maybe I am growing up...heh lol Timestamps: Beginning Words: 0:20 Parting Words: (none) This is my most in-depth episode that discusses my experiences, learnings, all wrapped in my stream-of-conciousness. In other words, it's just one big flow. No parting words, I hope this helps anyone willing to listen and improve themselves.
