139: The Voices of Future Leaders

139: The Voices of Future Leaders

This episode was created in collaboration with Heidrick & Struggles.  I chat to a panel of young leaders to discover what they want from their leadership and culture and what kinds of leaders they aspire to become in order to shape a World Better Led.

The panel includes Sarah Sage, Floris Hondmann, Lea Evers and Jacob Vincent with huge thanks to TA Mitchell and Luisa Muse. This is an important episode for all leaders in a multigenerational working environment.

All of these young leaders are passionate about a ‘World Better Led’ and how their work can create clarity, purpose, meaning and opportunities for growth and development. Human Centred Leadership has taken pole position and profit now becomes a far more complex and contextualised question for organisational leaders to answer and provide a compelling narrative to those they seek to recruit.

Young talent has an expectation for their leaders to be authentic but not perfect and to take the time to understand, respect, communicate and lead in a personalised way.

Empathy is important to them all, they care. They have a strong bond and sense of collaboration between themselves, and they know more about each other's lives than perhaps was common in early careers just a few decades ago.

The pandemic allowed all of us to reassess priorities and identify our own non-negotiables and the way we work will never be the same.  We discuss the idea that working  from the office is  actually the time that we need to switch on our ‘out of office’ notifications. They want the office to be productive and focus on celebration, connection and education rather than endless meetings, reports and zoom calls which can be done at home.

E169: Lawren Askinosie - Doing Work that Matters

E169: Lawren Askinosie - Doing Work that Matters

Lawren Askinosie grew up around craft chocolate, and with craft chocolate. Still in high school when her father transitioned from courtroom to chocolate-making and started one of the first small batch chocolate factories in America, she assisted him in almost every facet of their new life as chocolate makers—from working the storefront to developing marketing material. Eager to jump into the family business full-time Lawren began college early and upon graduation at 20, dove headfirst into learning the ins and outs of operating a bean-to-bar chocolate factory, building a brand, and marketing and selling craft chocolate.

Now the Chief Marketing Officer of the direct trade business that Forbes recently named “One of the 25 Best Small Companies In America,” Lawren is passionate about more than helping to shape the conversation around craft chocolate. She loves assisting Shawn to build sustainable relationships with smallholder cocoa farmers (especially female farmers), telling those stories, and finding innovative ways to connect the dots between the direct trade model, quality, and community. A passionate advocate for women, Lawren works to empower women through every aspect of the business from helping to seek out female-led farmer groups to facilitating girls empowerment initiatives in Askinosie’s cocoa origin communities. Lawren’s first book, which she co-authored with her father, called Meaningful Work: A Quest To Do Great Business, Find Your Calling And Feed Your Soul is available here.

Lawren is based in Austin, TX with her husband and three dogs (we lovingly call it "The Austin Annex"). Because technology, she's able to do her job remotely but also spends tons of time at the chocolate factory in Springfield. When she's not chocolate-ing or traveling, she's eating her way through Austin (with particular emphasis on tacos, BBQ and margaritas) and listening to live music.

Lawren serves on the board of Girls Empowerment Network, a Texas-based nonprofit that seeks to ignite the power in girls throughout the state by teaching them self-efficacy.

In today's episode, we listen to Tanya Marwaha, a young leader in the mental health space who shares with us her experience of supporting herself through mental health difficulties as a young person, then turning those experiences into positive energy as a founder, to help other peers find the support, learning, and community that people like she and I never had.

This conversation was really close to home for me, as a young person without much support network who also threw myself into my work and personal development as a way of coping with the issues I faced. I hope any young listeners today find it useful too!

    Today's Guest

Tanya is currently a second-year student at the London School of Economics. Having battled with chronic health conditions since the age of 13, the topic of mental health became very close to her heart. From these experiences, she created Championing Youth Minds, an organisation that provides young people with a youth-led platform, full of free resources, workshops and information surrounding mental wellbeing.

In Part 2 of this 2-Part episode, Pastor Q talks about how to remain adaptable, evaluate past experiences, and then draw maps for leaders that will come after you.

    Choosing Alignment, Even In Disagreement

    Choosing Alignment, Even In Disagreement

Organizations often strive for unanimous decisions around the table. However, a diverse team will bring different life experiences and perspectives to any discussion. Secure and confident leaders can handle a healthy level of disagreement, so long as there's alignment with what matters most. We may disagree in the room, but once we exit, we walk in unity and agreement on whatever decision was made.

    Unhealthy Things Grow Too

    Unhealthy Things Grow Too

We've all heard the saying - "healthy things grow." But that's only half of the truth. Unhealthy things grow too; and most "secret sauce" growth strategies don't account for that. Make no mistake, something is ALWAYS growing. It's just a matter of what fruit is being produced.

    Why Am I Not Growing?

    Why Am I Not Growing?

Many leaders grow discontent if their organization or personal development is not growing at the pace they want. Why aren't you growing? And why aren't you ok with it? Is that discontentment coming from a willingness to change, or an unhealthy place? These are important questions to ask to avoid falling into the two traps of complacency or self-accomplishment.
