What does it mean to bring Indigeneity into colonial spaces, especially into the government?
Michelle Friesen, City Councilor for the City of Whitehorse, knows a thing or two about it. In October 2021 she was elected as the first Indigenous woman to serve on Whitehorse City Council – the first Indigenous person to sit in City Council in 30 years. Early this year, Michelle and her son, Theo, were in the media after she faced complaints by fellow city council members to stop bringing her son to meetings, an act that is rooted in her Indigeneity.
Michelle joins Shayla to look at the cultural and historical context of Matriarchy and motherhood in places of decision making and how she views her role, and the role of Matriarchs-in-the-making, in colonial governing institutions.

Michael Gates has worked in the cultural resource field in the Yukon for more than 40 years. He was the curator of collections for Parks Canada in Dawson City for 20 of them. He has written numerous technical papers on museology and cultural resource management, hundreds of articles and three books on Yukon history.
Yannick Klein (EnvA 2004), vétérinaire fondateur de TEAM Veto et passionné de courses de chiens de traineaux, au 🎙 de Sophie.
C’est à l’école, à l’UMES précisément, que Yannick découvre l’univers des chiens de traineaux. Inspiré par de nombreux livres ou films comme « L’enfant des neiges » (on a retrouvé le titre 😉), « Into the wild », « L’appel de la forêt » ou « Il suffit d’y croire », il est happé lors d’un stage en Alaska par les paysages infinis et grandioses qui le renvoient à la petitesse de l’être humain et lui imposent l’humilité…
Une fois vétérinaire, il se lance dans la pratique mais au-delà des soins, c’est l’entrepreneuriat et le management qui le passionnent. Il sera associé pendant 7 ans et passera un DEMV (Diplôme d’Ecole en Management Vétérinaire) à l’École de Toulouse pour développer ses compétences managériales. Sa route professionnelle croise celles de mentors, qui l’ont profondément marqué et ont étayé sa réflexion sur le leadership…
Puis, une envie partagée avec sa femme de « vivre leur rêve » les mènent progressivement vers une expatriation au Yukon, au Canada 🇨🇦. Là-bas, la question se pose du passage de l’équivalence pour pouvoir continuer à pratiquer mais Yannick décide plutôt de saisir cette opportunité de « perte d’identité vétérinaire » pour en construire une autre, avec un diplôme reconnu à l’international. Il se lance donc dans un MBA (Master in Business administration) full-time à Montréal, qui s’avèrera riche en rencontres et le mènera vers un poste de directeur des ressources humaines à l’AFY (Association Franco-Yukonnaise). Cette expérience lui ouvrira également la voie vers le coaching, lui permettant ainsi de créer sa propre entreprise d’accompagnement : TEAM Veto.
Enfin, il n’oublie pas sa passion des courses de chiens de traineaux ❄️ et endosse régulièrement la casquette de vétérinaire, d’organisateur mais aussi de photographe lors de ces évènements. Depuis 5 ans, il participe à la préparation de la Percy DeWolfe organisée en hommage au célèbre postier qui parcourait régulièrement des centaines de kilomètres en chien, à cheval et en bateau pour distribuer le courrier. Cette année, 4 confrères et consœurs français se joindront à lui au mois de mars pour encadrer chiens et mushers 💪. Affaire à suivre !

It’s a problem that’s been coming for quite some time, and one that really comes as no surprise. The large landscape national parks that are home to many species of wildlife have been turning into biological islands as development hems them in. You can look back to 1993 when the Yellowstone to Yukon Initiative launched to begin to see the discussion around opening up these parks through migratory corridors. That initiative, which continues today, envisioned a corridor stretching from Yellowstone National Park to Canada’s Yukon Territory to serve wildlife by protecting core wildlife habitat.
There have been other somewhat similar initiatives. There’s the Wildlands Network, which since 1991 has been, as that organization puts it, striving to reconnect, restore, and re-wild North America. There have been efforts in Congress to pass legislation that would provide funding for such corridors. The Pew Charitable Trust this past October released a report on the need for creating migratory corridors and the challenges standing in their way.
Today we’re going to zoom in on some national parks, their wildlife, and the need to establish habitat connectivity between those parks to prevent animals from being stranded on biological islands. Joining us is Dr. William Newmark, a research curator and conservation biologist in the Natural History Museum of Utah.
There is a wide acceptance that we have drifted too far away from nature, and that we need to pull closer. Many have called for 30 by 30 - conserving 30% of nature by 2030. The 2022 State of the Birds Report pointed out that more than half of bird species normally found in habitats as diverse as forests, deserts and oceans in the United States are in decline. Climate change is a major factor in those declines, but human development also plays a key role by chewing into wildlife habitat and creating biological islands.
How do we reverse declines in wildlife and in wildlife habitat? Can we prevent Yellowstone, Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Rocky Mountain National Parks, and other large Western landscape parks from turning into biological islands? Today we’re going to explore the problems, and possible solutions, with Elaine Leslie, who was the National Park Service’s Chief for Biological Resources before retiring, and Bart Melton, who leads the National Parks Conservation Association’s Wildlife Program.
Joining us today is Etienne Tardif. Etienne keeps his bees in the Yukon Territory, where he works as a mining consultant. His data driven approach to keeping bees relies a lot on the technology he uses, plus his study of insulated hives, and thermodynamics of winter clusters. His overwintering techniques have been very successful with no top ventilation, lots of top insulation and insulation on the inside of his insulated plastic hives.

Dans l'épisode #84, Mélanie te raconte son histoire et son parcours qui n'a pas toujours été très facile. Mais les choses ont vraiment évolué pour elle et cette fois, dans le bon sens ! Elle a fini par trouver une nouvelle maison et une nouvelle famille dans le Yukon, au Canada.
Fin 2022, elle et sa chienne retournent plusieurs mois retrouver cette vie qu'elles ont du laisser de côté à cause des dures lois de l'immigration. Dans cet épisode bonus, on te partage, via des messages audios, cette aventure et cette excitation que l'on ressent lorsqu'on prend le départ pour une nouvelle aventure tant attendue.

Comment aller de l’avant et garder sa motivation à partir seule, sans soutien de sa famille ? C’est l’histoire de Mélanie, qui rêvait de voyage, de partir… ce besoin de se retrouver et de trouver sa place, ailleurs que dans la ville où était sa structure familiale.
Lorsqu’on parle des départs d’expatriation-immigration, il y a le soutien des proches qui fait surface, même si ces derniers ne sont pas en accord avec notre choix initial, au bout du compte, il y a un soutien.
Mélanie avait envie d’ailleurs, et a dû partir, malgré des incompréhensions de ses frères et sœurs, qui étaient son seul repère familial.
Cette bordelaise d’origine, a découvert les envies de voyage lors d’un voyage avec sa meilleure amie aux États-Unis. Ce pays si grand et si contrasté, montre une autre facette du monde. Et c’est avec cette envie de repartir que Mélanie se nourrit, à son retour en France. Elle cherche à partir avec les caractéristiques qui l’entouraient : l’âge et l’argent. Elle s’envole pour l’Australie pour 8 mois pour ce premier voyage seule. Elle fait évoluer son anglais et découvre les différents emplois que propose le pays. Elle rentre en France, et fait face au syndrôme des personnes restées longtemps à l’étranger : cette impression d’avoir vécu mille et une vies, comparé à ses proches. Elle décide de repartir mais cette fois-ci dans un pays qui l’a fait rêver depuis longtemps, le Canada et plus précisément le territoire du Yukon.
Cette nouvelle aventure sera semée d’embûches, elle ne se sent pas à la hauteur lorsqu’il faut passer des entretiens en anglais, ses frères et sœurs ne comprennent pas son choix de partir, partir loin d’eux, partir pour vivre ses rêves, partir pourquoi?
