    en-usApril 09, 2019

    Podcast Summary

    • Transforming personal spaces into Airbnbs and shifting careers bring new opportunitiesTransforming a personal space into an Airbnb can bring in additional income and create meaningful experiences for both hosts and guests. Similarly, shifting careers can lead to new opportunities for growth and making a difference in others' lives.

Transforming a personal space into an Airbnb not only brings in additional income but also allows hosts to share their world with travelers. Jen and the speaker have done this by designing their home with a private bedroom for guests and adding personal touches to make their stay comfortable and memorable. This not only adds value to their property but also creates opportunities for new experiences and connections. Similarly, Lisa Lampanelli, a renowned comedian, decided to shift her career to focus on serving others through her work. Her decision to retire from stand-up comedy and dedicate herself to helping others was inspired by her desire to make a difference. Both examples illustrate the potential benefits of stepping out of one's comfort zone and embracing new opportunities for growth and connection.

    • From Catholic school to Spy magazine, George Takei shares amusing anecdotesGeorge Takei's experiences span from Catholic school to researching for magazines, with humorous stories about appreciating older black men and becoming an environmental advocate

George Takei, in his candid conversations, shares stories that showcase his unique perspective and experiences, ranging from his time in Catholic school to his tenure as a researcher at Rolling Stone and Spy magazines. One amusing anecdote that stood the test of time involved his appreciation for black men in his forties, comparing them to LL Cool J or Jared from Subway. However, he lamented about missing the chance to meet Jared due to age. Takei also discussed his former stance against environmental issues and how a chance encounter at a bachelorette party led him to become an advocate for recycling. The conversation also touched upon his experience fact-checking controversial articles for Spy magazine and the unexpected consequences of revealing mobsters' addresses in a pullout map. Overall, the conversation showcased Takei's ability to find humor and insight in various aspects of life.

    • Transitioning from one career to anotherRecognize internal signs to move on, stay true to self, and retire before hating it for personal growth and happiness.

Knowing when to move on from a career or situation is crucial for personal growth and happiness. Comedian and journalist Queen Amin shared her experiences of transitioning from journalism to comedy and how her skills from fact-checking and media manipulation helped her in her comedy career. She emphasized the importance of recognizing the internal signs that it's time to move on, even if external circumstances seem favorable. Amin also emphasized the importance of listening to that inner voice and not ignoring it, even if societal expectations or financial gains seem to suggest otherwise. By staying true to herself and her desires, Amin was able to retire from stand-up comedy before she hated it, leading to a more fulfilling and joyful life.

    • Observing others' actions can inspire us to pursue our passionsObserve those around you and learn from their actions, even if they don't explicitly encourage you. Recognize when it's time to reassess and move on, and prioritize self-reflection and journaling to understand your emotions and identify sources of joy.

Sometimes, we learn the most valuable lessons from observing the actions of others, even if we don't realize it at the time. The speaker shared a story about her father, who retired at 60 to pursue his passion for painting. Though she didn't explicitly hear him encourage her to do the same, his example inspired her to find joy in her own life and follow her passions, even when it meant making difficult decisions. The speaker also emphasized the importance of recognizing when it's time to reassess and move on from situations that no longer bring fulfillment, whether in relationships or careers. She encouraged listeners to pay attention to their inner voices and take action when they can no longer ignore the signs. Additionally, she discussed the value of journaling and self-reflection in understanding our emotions and identifying what brings us joy.

    • Discovering what makes life unfulfilling and taking steps to change itThrough personal growth and transformation, we can identify what's holding us back and make meaningful changes to improve our lives, such as changing careers, alleviating financial stress, and providing service to others.

Personal growth and transformation often require introspection and letting go of things that no longer serve us. After a significant life event, such as the death of a loved one, the speaker discovered the importance of figuring out what makes life feel unfulfilling and taking steps to change it. This can involve getting rid of a career that is not enjoyed, saving enough money to alleviate financial stress, and providing service to others. The speaker's experience as a lawyer, Wall Street worker, and coach showed him that people often don't realize their own potential to help others and that they may be seeking what they need without even knowing it. As a coach, he learned to meet people where they are and provide them with what they need, rather than trying to force his own agenda on them. Ultimately, the speaker found that being useful to others without imposing his will on them led to greater satisfaction and fulfillment for both himself and his clients.

    • Personal experiences and tough conversationsVulnerability, resilience, and finding humor in challenges can lead to growth and the ability to help others.

Personal experiences and tough conversations can lead to growth and the ability to help others. The speaker shared an example of a turning point in a relationship where a blunt comment led the other person to change their perspective. The speaker also discussed her decision to become a coach, drawing on her own experiences to help others. Despite her tough exterior and comedic persona, she acknowledged the importance of being gentle and adaptable in certain situations. The speaker also reflected on the evolution of her career and the benefits of being able to work from home and prioritize her personal life. Overall, the conversation highlighted the power of vulnerability, resilience, and the ability to find humor in life's challenges.

    • Valuing deep connections over superficial relationshipsRecognize the importance of authentic connections and take risks to deepen relationships with loved ones, prioritizing vulnerability and self-expression over scarcity and fear.

The speaker values deep connections with a few people over superficial relationships with many. Despite having opportunities for luxurious experiences and large social circles, they find fulfillment in authentic connections with loved ones. The speaker also acknowledges their fear of vulnerability and scarcity issues, which they are working to overcome. A key moment of growth for the speaker was recognizing the importance of deep connections and taking the risk to express their feelings to their mother. This experience highlighted the importance of being true to oneself and prioritizing meaningful relationships. The speaker encourages others to take similar risks and prioritize authentic connections with those they care about.

    • Sharing personal stories can create powerful connectionsBeing open and authentic can inspire others to face their struggles and leave a lasting impact.

Vulnerability and sharing personal stories can create a powerful connection and inspire others to open up and face their own struggles. Lisa Lampanelli, a comedian, learned this firsthand when she shared her experiences with food and body image during her workshops. By showing her audience that it's okay to be real and vulnerable, she was able to facilitate deep conversations and emotional connections among her attendees. This approach was particularly effective when she decided to retire from comedy and shared her reasons for leaving the industry in a candid and emotional way. By being open and authentic, she was able to resonate with her audience on a deeper level and leave a lasting impact. Additionally, Lampanelli emphasized the importance of understanding that weight loss is a difficult and ongoing process, and that it's essential to approach it with compassion and gentleness rather than harshness or yelling.

    • Realizing the power of standing up for oneself through comedyComedy, especially roasting, can empower and transform, but it's crucial to use it respectfully and consensually towards deserving targets.

Comedy, especially roasting, can be a powerful tool for self-expression and empowerment. Lisa Lampanelli shared an experience where she spoke up against a heckler during a performance, which led her to realize the importance of standing up for herself. She also emphasized the importance of genuine love and connection in roasting, as she and Jeff Ross have a long-standing friendship that allows them to roast each other effectively. However, Lisa acknowledged that roasting can have emotional consequences and should only be done towards people who are deserving and consensual. Overall, Lisa's story highlights the transformative power of comedy and the importance of authenticity and respect in using it as a tool for expression.

    • Recognizing and addressing fears that cloud instinctsUnderstanding and challenging deep-rooted fears can help us trust our instincts and make decisions aligned with our true desires.

Our instincts and gut feelings are important guides in life, but they can be clouded by fear and limiting beliefs. These fears often stem from a deep-rooted sense of worthiness and the fear of being alone or unloved. By recognizing and addressing these underlying fears, we can learn to trust our instincts and make decisions that align with our true desires. This process involves identifying and challenging our catastrophic thoughts and replacing them with more positive and empowering beliefs. For example, if someone is in a bad relationship, acknowledging and dissolving the fear of being alone can lead to the courage to leave and potentially open up new opportunities. Similarly, if someone has a dream, like performing on Dancing with the Stars, but is held back by fear of failure or rejection, recognizing and addressing these fears can help them take the leap and pursue their goal. In essence, it's important to trust our instincts, but also to be aware of and challenge the fears and limiting beliefs that may be clouding them.

    • Exploring Fear of Disappointment and Forming Deeper ConnectionsSelf-reflection and vulnerability are crucial for deepening relationships and accepting ourselves and others as they are. Handling disappointment healthily is essential to form meaningful connections.

It's essential to reflect on our actions and question our patterns to grow and form deeper connections with others. The speaker shared an example of how she made insensitive jokes during a podcast interview, which led her to question her behavior and explore her fear of dealing with disappointment. She realized that she needs to learn to handle disappointment healthily and form deeper connections with people instead of just having surface-level friendships. The speaker emphasized the importance of self-reflection and being open to vulnerability, even if it's uncomfortable at times. By doing so, we can accept ourselves and others as they are and potentially deepen our relationships.

    • The Importance of Constructive Feedback and Open CommunicationHaving people who challenge us and provide honest feedback is crucial for personal growth. React from a place of love and forgiveness when receiving criticism, and recognize and learn from mistakes while being kind to ourselves.

Constructive feedback and open communication are essential for personal growth. Lisa shares an experience where her friend called her out on her negativity, leading to a realization that her attitude wasn't helping her. This experience demonstrates the importance of having people in your life who challenge you and provide honest feedback. Lisa also emphasizes the need to react from a place of love and forgiveness when receiving criticism. Additionally, Lisa discusses her past struggles with anger and how she has worked on addressing it. She shares that it's essential to recognize and learn from our mistakes while also being kind to ourselves. Overall, Lisa's story highlights the power of authentic communication and self-reflection in fostering personal growth.

    • Trusting your gut and staying true to yourselfFollowing your instincts and being authentic can lead to personal growth and unexpected opportunities

Following your gut instincts and being authentic to who you are can lead to unexpected opportunities and personal growth. Lisa Lampanelli shared her experience of transitioning from comedy to serious plays, which she initially resisted but ultimately found great success in. She emphasized the importance of staying true to oneself, even when faced with challenges or resistance. Surprisingly, this authenticity attracted the attention of prestigious theaters and audiences, leading to a new chapter in her career. Similarly, in personal and professional life, trusting your intuition and not being afraid to start anew can result in unexpected blessings.

    • Stay true to yourself and your interestsIt's important to pursue what brings joy and satisfaction, even if it means turning down opportunities that don't align with your interests.

It's important to stay true to yourself and your interests, even if it means turning down opportunities that may seem appealing but don't align with what you enjoy or find fulfilling. The speaker shared examples of comedians, including himself, who have made the decision to retire or turn down offers that didn't feel authentic to them. He also discussed his own experiences with saying yes to new projects and opportunities, even when they were outside of his comfort zone. Ultimately, the speaker emphasized the importance of knowing what brings you joy and satisfaction in life and having the confidence to pursue it, regardless of external pressures or expectations.

    • Embrace new experiences despite fearsFacing fears and trying new experiences can lead to personal growth and potential passions, but it's also important to respect dislikes and make choices that bring joy.

It's essential to face our fears and try new experiences, even if we're unsure or scared. My friend, Lisa, shared her experience of volunteering for a self-acceptance workshop for special needs kids, despite her initial fear and apprehension. She discovered that the experience was rewarding and potentially led to a new passion. Conversely, it's equally important to acknowledge and respect our dislikes and not force ourselves into situations that bring us misery. Lisa's experience with recording audiobooks serves as an example of this. Ultimately, it's crucial to listen to our instincts and make choices that bring us joy and fulfillment.

    • The importance of finding happiness in one's own wayParents don't need to push their children to overachieve to raise successful individuals. Finding meaning and purpose, whether through helping others or enjoying simple joys, contributes to a fulfilling life.

Everyone's definition of happiness and fulfillment varies. Some people seek excitement and thrill, while others find contentment in being "happy and cozy." However, it's important to remember that everyone deserves to be happy in their own way, and no goal or achievement is worth risking one's life. The speaker shares how her parents, who didn't put pressure on their children to overachieve, still managed to raise overachievers. She also reflects on how her parents' self-criticism influenced her own self-perception. Ultimately, the speaker encourages compassion for parents who struggle with self-acceptance and emphasizes the importance of finding meaning and purpose in life, whether that comes from helping others or simply finding joy in the everyday.

    • How the arrival of companies like McDonald's in the 1990s had a significant psychological impact on Russians, challenging their perceptions of the West.
    • The stark differences between American meritocracy and the "blat" (nepotism) system prevalent in Russia, which limits opportunities for those without connections.

1020: Sovereign Citizens | Skeptical Sunday

1020: Sovereign Citizens | Skeptical Sunday

Is there a legal "cheat code" for avoiding US laws? Michael Regilio investigates this and other wild things sovereign citizens believe on Skeptical Sunday!

Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we’re joined by skeptic, comedian, and podcaster Michael Regilio!

On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss:

    • The Sovereign Citizen Movement is a fringe group that believes they are not subject to US laws or government authority. They often engage in pseudo-legal arguments and tactics to avoid taxes, licenses, and other societal obligations. The ideology has spread beyond the US to countries like Canada, the UK, Australia, and parts of Europe, indicating it's a growing international phenomenon.
    • The movement has roots in anti-Semitism, white nationalism, and conspiracy theories. It appeals to people in financial distress by promising ways to eliminate debts and access secret government accounts.
    • Sovereign citizen beliefs have no legal validity and have never been successful in court. However, the movement has an estimated 200,000-300,000 adherents in the US.
    • Some sovereign citizens have engaged in violence against law enforcement and government officials. The movement is considered one of the most dangerous domestic extremist groups by US authorities.
    • While sovereign citizen beliefs are misguided and potentially dangerous, the best response is to promote good ideas and accurate information. By educating ourselves and others about the law, government, and civic responsibilities, we can help counter the spread of these harmful ideologies.

1018: Phil Elwood | Manipulating Media for All the Worst Humans

All the Worst Humans author Phil Elwood is here to illustrate his past life as a PR operative who made powerful pariahs palatable to public perception!

What We Discuss with Phil Elwood:

    • Phil Elwood's career as a PR operative for notorious figures was essentially a real-life version of being a supervillain's henchman, involving ethically dubious practices to manipulate public perception.
    • Phil's work took him into the belly of the beast, collaborating with shady organizations and visiting dangerous locations to spin narratives for some of the world's most detestable characters.
    • The moral weight of constantly lying and bending the truth for nefarious clients exacted a heavy toll on Phil's mental health, leading to substance abuse and requiring intensive therapy.
    • Phil's experiences provide a rare, candid glimpse into the dark underbelly of global PR and political spin, exposing the extent to which public perception can be contrived.
    • Despite his ethically questionable past, Phil's story offers hope for redemption. He has since established clear moral boundaries in his work, demonstrating that it's possible to learn from past mistakes and align one's career with their values.
    • And much more...

1017: The End of the World | Skeptical Sunday

1017: The End of the World | Skeptical Sunday

If you're constantly obsessed over predictions that the end of the world is nigh, Andrew Gold has some (mostly) good news for us on this Skeptical Sunday!

Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we’re joined by On the Edge host Andrew Gold!

On This Week's Skeptical Sunday, We Discuss:

    • Throughout history, would-be prophets and doomsaying groups have predicted the end of the world, but all have been wrong so far. This includes religious prophecies, cult beliefs, and misinterpretations of ancient calendars like the 2012 Mayan prediction.
    • The concept of the end of the world is often used by religions and cults to control their members, instilling fear and promoting compliance with their rules and beliefs.
    • There are several potential threats to humanity's survival, including climate change, nuclear war, pandemics, resource depletion, and the development of artificial intelligence. However, the likelihood of these causing a complete end to humanity is debated.
    • The Fermi Paradox and the concept of the Great Filter suggest that advanced civilizations may face barriers to long-term survival, which could explain why we haven't encountered alien life despite the vastness of the universe.
    • While concerns about global threats are valid, it's important to maintain perspective and not become overly anxious. Humanity has shown resilience and innovation in the face of past challenges. By staying informed, curious, and skeptical, we can work towards addressing potential threats and shaping a positive future for ourselves and future generations.

1013: Big Dairy | Skeptical Sunday

Big Dairy's impact on health and policy is udderly shocking. Michael Regilio milks the truth from this cash cow of an industry on Skeptical Sunday!

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

    • Milk consumption by adults has not been natural for most of human history. About 65% of the global population has reduced ability to digest lactose, with some populations experiencing nearly 100% lactose intolerance.
    • The dairy industry, with government support, has heavily promoted milk consumption despite questionable health benefits. This includes school milk programs and marketing campaigns like "Got Milk?"
    • Raw milk can be dangerous, potentially causing diseases like typhoid and tuberculosis. Pasteurization made milk safer, but the dairy industry initially resisted it.
    • The US government has repeatedly subsidized and bailed out the dairy industry, including buying surplus milk and cheese. This has led to an artificial inflation of the dairy market.
    • Good news for the lactose averse: there are many alternative sources for the nutrients found in milk. People can obtain calcium from foods like almonds, figs, kale, tofu, and sweet potatoes. By exploring these options, people can make informed dietary choices that align with their health needs and preferences.

352: My Spouse Controls My Online Life! | Feedback Friday

Out of work since late last year, you were finally making progress on the job hunt until COVID-19 locked everything down. Now you've been making connections and finding opportunities on LinkedIn that seem promising. The problem is, your spouse is nervous that anything you post there will somehow hurt your chances for getting a job; it seems her resentment that you're not working -- added to the constant proximity of quarantining responsibly -- puts the world through a very negative lens and anything you say is stupid.

So now she's monitoring your LinkedIn account from hers and picking fights with you every time you post anything there. Should you find another place to live for now while pursuing work, or should you just let your spouse control your online life and make that pursuit more difficult? We tackle this and more here on Feedback Friday!

On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss:

    • How do you know if the work from home/side hustle guru you're following on Instagram is a scam artist or the real deal?
    • Sadly, your spouse is simultaneously resentful that you don't have a job and embarrassed that you post to LinkedIn looking for one -- and it causes fights that last for days. Should you find your own space for a while or let them control your online life?
    • Your significant other passed away in front of you at home, and now you're dealing with PTSD on top of grief in the very place where it happened. What can you do to move forward?
    • With the biological clock ticking, are you selfish or stupid to try for a child in the middle of a pandemic?
    • Laura Gassner Otting recommended cutting off toxic people in your life who don't support or "cheerlead" for you. Sadly, you've never been the cheerleading type -- should you worry that you've been a toxic person all along without knowing?
    • You're a South Indian with a supposedly hard-to-pronounce name. You don't mind people mispronouncing it (because the effort is respectful), but you do mind the "cutesy" nicknames foisted upon you by people you barely know. How can you get people to take you seriously enough to use your actual name?
    • When the family relies on you so much, how can you find the time to get a place of your own and become independent for the first time in your young life?
    • Life Pro Tip: Buy domains for your name, your kids' names, and the names of any businesses or anything you own (for a discount at our sponsor hover.com/jordan). If you can, set up a small website (quickly and easily...

349: How to Pick Your Battles Without Being a Doormat | Feedback Friday

You've never thought of yourself as a doormat, but you've just found it easier to meet people halfway and go with the flow rather than waste your energy on something stupid or trivial. So how do you pick your battles -- especially while everyone who's been following the advice of medical professionals to stay home during the pandemic is feeling a little cooped up and abrasive right now? We'll tackle this and more here on Feedback Friday!

On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss:

    • How do you choose your battles and resolve conflict without being a doormat -- especially while everyone's a bit on edge during this long, long pandemic?
    • You feel you should have strong stances on certain issues, but you don't want your bias to stop you from weighing the evidence that informs those stances. Is it wrong to not take a stand on issues because you honestly don't have all the information?
    • Your friend married an African man with old-world views of gender roles, so she works full time and maintains the house because he won't help with "women's" work. Quarantine has almost broken her. How can she get him to stop thinking in the 19th century and join her in the 21st?
    • You're an introvert about to move to an unfamiliar city to take up an exciting, challenging new job with a bigger paycheck. What are the most important things to keep in mind during this hard reset?
    • You're a jack of all trades with no clear idea of what to do with your life, and you tend to get bored after doing one thing for a while. What might you do to focus and choose a path that will keep you occupied over the long haul?
    • Your job hunt lost momentum as the reaction to COVID-19 started gearing up. You know this pandemic will pass, but what should you do to find the gainful employment you want after this is over?
    • Life Pro Tip: When you have to go out and press elevator buttons and other switches, use a lighter -- then light the lighter to disinfect itself. No need to waste tissues or gloves!

358: Is My Friend Blowing Her IVF Money on Gifts? | Feedback Friday

Your friend wants to be a mother more than anything, but says she and her husband can’t afford the IVF it would take to make this possible. On This Week’s Feedback Friday, We Discuss:

    • Is your friend — who says she wants to be a mother more than anything — blowing the money she could be using for IVF on expensive gifts for everyone else? And if so, is there any socially acceptable way for you to have a discussion with her about it?
    • You were on the path to a job in a new field until the pandemic hit, and now you’re finding it hard to land interviews without past experience on your resume. Should you go back to your old field in the meantime until things go more or less back to normal?
    • There’s a gap on your resume where you took a year off of college to go to drug and alcohol rehab. Is there a way to spin this positively?
    • While you’ve sought therapy to mitigate the effects of your father’s abuse as a child, your BPD-diagnosed sister hasn’t — and it causes her to act out in ways that are dangerous to herself and others. How can you best help her?
    • How do you decide when it’s worth pushing through something (like learning a new language), or quitting because it causes anxiety and isn’t pleasant to endure at the time?
    • Life Pro Tip: If a bee colony has set up a hive that you need removed, don’t call the exterminator. Google local beekeepers, who will relocate the hive often for free. This is an easy way to be nice to the bees and to your wallet!

355: My Roommate Tried to Kill Me! | Feedback Friday

Your unstable roommate physically attacked you over an argument about laundry, and then she filed a protection from abuse order against you! • You're self-conscious about being Asian American during this pandemic, and your sister is even getting racist verbal abuse hurled at her in high school. What is the right attitude and perspective for you both to carry during this trying time?
    • What's the least awkward way to respond when someone self-deprecates themself in comparison to you?
    • You were recently selected for a diplomatic job in the Balkans with the Army, and despite your aversion to firearms, you'll be required to carry one. How do you mentally prepare for this compromise of your pacifist ideals?
    • You're one semester from college graduation, but nobody in your family knows your GPA is disappointingly low. To top it off, your three younger siblings are set for Ivy League schools and you feel like an unemployable fraud in comparison. How can you improve your outlook?

    • After building up a wide range of experiences for over a decade, you've become decent at a few vastly different skills. Should you combine these skills or just focus on becoming world-class in one?
