184: Naveen Jain | How Moonshot Thinking Will Save the World

    en-usApril 11, 2019

    Podcast Summary

    • Transforming homes into Airbnbs and exploring big ideasAirbnb can bring extra income and cultural exchange, while maintaining focus on multiple projects and embracing curiosity leads to success

Turning your home into an Airbnb not only brings in extra income but also allows you to share your world with others and create special experiences for guests. Naveen Jain, a serial entrepreneur, exemplifies thinking both small and big, as he focuses on improving human health through the gut biome and working towards mining resources on the moon for Earth's survival. The ability to shift perspectives and maintain focus on multiple projects, as demonstrated by Jain's personal and professional endeavors, is a valuable skill for achieving success. The Curious and the Highly Motivated, a podcast episode featuring Jain, emphasizes the importance of curiosity and adaptability in achieving goals.

    • Identifying and solving real-life problems is the essence of entrepreneurshipEntrepreneurship is about solving problems, whether starting a business or joining initiatives, and it's a mindset that can be embraced by anyone.

Entrepreneurship is not just about starting a company or being the face of a business, but rather, it's about identifying and solving real-life problems. The speaker's children, who have made significant impacts in various fields, are prime examples of this mindset. They have tackled issues such as affordability, gender bias, and global unity, demonstrating that entrepreneurship comes in many forms, including joining existing initiatives to pursue a common goal. The speaker's upbringing in India and his own experiences have shaped his perspective that life is a series of accidents, and it's the last event that we remember that often defines our path. Ultimately, being an entrepreneur is about being a problem solver, and one can embrace this mindset regardless of their current role or situation.

    • Embracing uncertainty for personal growthTaking calculated risks, committing fully, and considering impact can lead to personal growth and success

Taking calculated risks and fully committing to new opportunities can lead to significant personal growth and success. The speaker shares his experience of quitting his job at Microsoft without knowing exactly what he would do next, and how this decision ultimately led him to start a successful company. He emphasizes the importance of being willing to take risks, cutting ties completely, and giving your full effort to new ventures. The speaker also acknowledges the importance of financial planning and considering the impact on family and loved ones. His story underscores the idea that taking risks can be challenging, but the potential rewards can be great.

    • Overcoming adversity through hard work and valuesImmigrants from impoverished backgrounds, despite facing corruption and financial struggles, can achieve great success through strong work ethic, determination, and family values.

Despite coming from impoverished backgrounds and facing corruption in their home countries, many immigrants, including the speaker, managed to overcome adversity and achieve great success. The speaker's father, who refused to take bribes, faced financial struggles but instilled a strong work ethic and value of honesty in his family. The lack of money was not the main issue, as the family ate less than they needed to. Instead, they faced challenges in the form of frequent job transfers due to their father's refusal to take bribes. Despite these challenges, the speaker's siblings went on to earn advanced degrees, and the speaker himself came to the United States with only $5 and worked hard to earn an engineering degree and an MBA. The speaker's determination and resilience, along with his family's values, played a crucial role in their success.

    • Assumptions leading to opportunitiesAssumptions can lead to unexpected opportunities. Once we achieve our goals, material possessions may lose importance. Focus on personal growth and fulfillment, not superficial goals.

Assumptions can lead to unexpected opportunities. The speaker, Naveen, was mistakenly assumed to be a computer expert based on his high test scores and ethnicity. This mistake led him to come to the US and eventually become a successful entrepreneur, despite starting with very little and facing challenges due to his accent. Another key takeaway is that once we have the means to fulfill our desires, they may no longer hold the same importance to us. Naveen shared how he didn't have a long list of material possessions he wanted to acquire once he became successful. Instead, he focused on finding meaning and purpose in his life beyond material wealth. Lastly, Naveen emphasized the importance of humility and not chasing after superficial goals. He believes that true success comes when we stop focusing on proving ourselves to others and instead focus on personal growth and fulfillment.

    • Expanding Our Perspective Challenges Limiting BeliefsChanging your mindset from scarcity to abundance can lead to more success and peace in life, as it challenges limiting beliefs and allows for a more generous and effective use of resources.

Our mindset plays a crucial role in our success or failure in business and life. According to the speaker, growing up with scarcity can increase risk tolerance, but it can also lead some people to believe that money is the only thing that matters. However, successful people are not just those who follow certain habits, but those who think like them. For instance, taking ice baths like Tony Robbins won't make you like him, but thinking like him will. The scarcity mindset, which assumes that resources are finite, is a limiting belief that can be challenged by expanding our perspective. For example, there is more than enough solar energy to meet our needs, but we need to focus on converting it effectively. Additionally, humans are naturally generous, and abundance leads to democratization and demonetization of resources, reducing conflicts. In summary, our mindset shapes our reality, and expanding it can lead to more abundant and peaceful lives.

    • The Value of Moonshots and DreamersUnderstanding the root causes of chronic diseases and having actionable solutions can help prevent them, while being proactive in addressing these issues is crucial.

We underestimate the value and scarcity of resources like energy, food, land, and water, just as we take abundant resources like air for granted. A moonshot, according to the speaker, refers to an audacious goal that seems impossible but can lead to groundbreaking discoveries and solutions. He emphasizes the importance of dreamers and their role in tackling these massive problems. In the context of health, chronic diseases are not something we catch but rather the result of lifestyle choices. By understanding the root causes and having actionable solutions, we can make healthier choices and prevent chronic diseases. The speaker also highlights the importance of being proactive in addressing these issues instead of waiting for them to become a problem.

    • Personal choice to take action based on knowledgeHaving a clear goal, attracting top talent, long-term vision, and a way of thinking can lead to groundbreaking innovations.

When presented with knowledge about the causes of a problem and the actions needed to solve it, the decision to take action is a personal choice. This concept was illustrated through the example of Naveen Jain's experience in creating a technology to identify health threats. With a clear goal and the best minds in their field attracted by the challenge, they were able to make significant progress. Additionally, Naveen emphasized the importance of having a long-term vision, or a "moonshot," in order to inspire innovation and collaboration. He shared an anecdote about his prediction of the merging of phones and personal digital assistants, which eventually became the iPhone. This idea was not a revelation, but rather a way of thinking that led to a groundbreaking innovation.

    • Predicting and shaping the future with a multidisciplinary approachTo unlock new opportunities and transform industries, focus on necessary technologies and solutions, rather than perceived impossibilities. Consider secondary and tertiary implications of emerging technologies to unlock new opportunities.

Entrepreneurs and innovators need to have a multidisciplinary approach to predicting and shaping the future. Using the example of self-driving cars, Naveen Jain emphasized that the technology involves various components that were not initially designed for this purpose, but come together to create a game-changing innovation. He also highlighted how the implications of a single technology can extend beyond the primary industry it disrupts, as seen with the potential for self-driving cars to impact real estate and transportation infrastructure. Jain encouraged listeners to approach complex problems by focusing on the necessary technologies and solutions, rather than dwelling on the perceived impossibilities. By adopting a solution-oriented mindset and considering the secondary and tertiary implications of emerging technologies, individuals and organizations can unlock new opportunities and transform industries.

    • Identify root causes for effective problem solvingInstead of focusing solely on symptoms, ask deeper questions to find root causes and discover more efficient, sustainable solutions.

Instead of focusing solely on the symptoms of complex problems, it's essential to ask deeper questions and identify the root causes. By doing so, we can find more efficient and sustainable solutions. For instance, in the discussion about colonizing the moon, the focus was initially on solving the problem of growing food there. However, upon questioning why food is necessary, it was discovered that we could obtain energy through radiation and hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen from the moon. The real challenge then became finding enough nitrogen or transporting it from Earth. By shifting the perspective and addressing the root cause, we can make significant progress in solving complex problems. Another example given was the water scarcity issue, where the initial solution was to develop nanotechnology for desalination. However, upon questioning why there's a shortage of fresh water, it was discovered that most of it is used for agriculture, and a more effective solution would be to change agricultural methods to use less water or even grow muscle tissues for meat consumption instead of raising livestock. In summary, instead of focusing solely on the symptoms of complex problems, it's crucial to ask deeper questions and identify the root causes to find more efficient and sustainable solutions. This approach can be applied to various fields, from space exploration to social issues.

    • The Next Decade: A New RealityTechnology will expand our perception of reality with advancements in mixed reality, the ability to perceive new wavelengths, and the potential for the transference of life itself.

The next decade will bring unprecedented change due to the convergence of exponential technologies. Self-driving cars are just the beginning, and these advancements will fundamentally alter the way we perceive reality. Reality, as we know it, is merely our perception, and as technology advances, our perception will expand. With mixed reality, virtual objects will become part of the real world, and our ability to perceive new wavelengths or sounds could change what we consider real. This raises philosophical questions about consciousness and the nature of reality itself. Advancements in technology, such as the ability to transmit and synthesize DNA, could lead to the transference of life itself. As technology continues to progress, the boundaries between physical and virtual worlds will blur, and our understanding of reality will evolve.

    • The Brain Creates Our Experiences, Not Our SensesOur brains shape our reality, and the line between virtual and real experiences is blurring. Embrace curiosity and imagination to foster lifelong learning.

Our brains are more malleable than we realize, and the line between virtual and real experiences is becoming increasingly blurred. The brain creates our experiences, not our senses, and it can be easily fooled. This has significant implications for the future of social media and virtual reality, where we may be able to experience the same thing in multiple locations at once. Curiosity, not IQ, is what truly sets us apart as individuals, allowing us to imagine and create new possibilities. As entrepreneurs, it's important to embrace the ups and downs of life and business, rather than trying to eliminate them. And as educators or parents, our role may be less about providing answers and more about sparking curiosity and imagination in others. By encouraging people to explore the connections between seemingly unrelated things, we can help them develop intellectual curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

    • Nurturing Curiosity and CreativityFostering curiosity and creativity in children is crucial for personal and professional growth. Engage in activities like asking 'why' questions, creating stories, and being open to different perspectives to develop these skills. Embrace differences and learn from diverse knowledge bases to offer unique solutions.

Fostering curiosity and creativity in children, which is naturally present, is essential for personal and professional growth. The education system often stifles curiosity by limiting the number of right answers and encouraging conformity. However, being intellectually curious and constantly seeking knowledge allows us to make connections between seemingly unrelated things, solve complex problems, and shift perspectives. To develop creativity and curiosity, one can engage in various activities, such as creating stories that connect seemingly unrelated things, asking "why" questions, and being open to different perspectives. Being different, whether it's through an accent or unique ideas, can be an advantage in any environment, as it allows us to stand out and offer unique solutions. Moreover, continually expanding our knowledge base by reading and learning about diverse topics can provide us with valuable insights and dots that can be connected to solve complex problems. The ability to shift perspective is crucial in today's rapidly changing world, and it can be developed by asking different questions, being comfortable with being different, and being open to new ideas. In essence, nurturing curiosity and creativity, embracing differences, and developing the skill of shifting perspective are essential for personal and professional growth in a rapidly changing world.

    • Non-experts can bring fresh perspective and disrupt industriesNon-experts can challenge industry norms and make significant improvements by thinking outside the box, while experts may only be able to make incremental improvements based on their foundational knowledge.

Being a non-expert or novice in a particular field can provide a unique advantage in disrupting industries and making significant improvements. Experts, on the other hand, may only be able to make incremental improvements based on their foundational knowledge. The discussion also highlighted the example of Moon Express, which challenged industry norms and significantly reduced the cost of going to the moon by thinking outside the box. Similarly, in healthcare, a non-expert was able to challenge the traditional belief that all diseases have the same underlying cause and instead focus on the individual's unique needs. This perspective shift led to a more effective approach to treating diseases and improving overall health outcomes.

    • Exploring the Gut Microbiome for Personalized Health SolutionsAncient wisdom about the gut's role in health is being validated through modern technology, enabling personalized diet recommendations based on unique microbiome compositions.

Our bodies are complex ecosystems, teeming with microorganisms that play crucial roles in keeping us healthy. These microbes, numbering around 40 trillion, express 2 million genes collectively - more than the human genome. By studying the gut microbiome, we're discovering that personalized diets can help prevent and cure diseases. Hippocrates, an ancient Greek doctor, intuited this 2,500 years ago, famously saying, "All diseases begin in the gut." Now, we're harnessing technology to make this wisdom a reality. Companies like Viome analyze stool and blood samples, using AI to recommend personalized diets based on an individual's unique microbiome composition. This approach, which involves sending your poop to the lab, might seem unusual, but it holds significant potential for understanding and improving our health. The information gleaned from this analysis can reveal what foods to avoid and why, as well as what to eat for optimal health. World leaders have long known the value of this information, which is why they travel with portable toilets to protect their poop. In the future, this data could potentially be used for espionage, revealing sensitive information about an individual's health and even drug use. The potential applications of this technology are vast, and it's an exciting time to be exploring the mysteries of the gut microbiome.

    • Exploring the New Frontier: Multi-Planetary LivingWithin the next decade, humans will settle on the moon or Mars, creating habitats and infrastructure. Naveen Jain's projects aim to make this a reality, potentially bringing high-speed internet connectivity and fostering innovation.

We are on the brink of becoming a multi-planetary society within the next 10 to 15 years, with the first humans likely settling on the moon or Mars. This will require the creation of habitats and infrastructure on these planets, and while the initial journey may be a one-way ticket, future generations will continue to explore and expand our presence in the universe. Naveen Jain, a visionary entrepreneur, believes this is not only possible but inevitable, and he's already working on projects like Viome and Moon Express to make it a reality. Another intriguing aspect of this new frontier is the potential for high-speed internet connectivity, making the moon a potential hub for innovation and communication. This could bridge the gap between distant locations and enable us to maintain relationships and collaborate in ways we never thought possible. Despite the challenges, the excitement and potential for exploration and growth are too great to ignore. As we continue to push the boundaries of what's possible, we'll undoubtedly discover new wonders and unlock the secrets of the universe. So, whether you're an explorer at heart or simply curious about the future, stay tuned for the latest developments in space exploration and technology.

993: Johann Hari | The Skinny on 'Magic Pill' Weight-Loss Drugs

Are new weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy "magic" pills that can put an end to the obesity epidemic? Johann Hari is here to give us the skinny!

What We Discuss with Johann Hari:

    • Processed and ultra-processed foods are a major driver of the obesity epidemic, as they undermine the body's natural ability to feel full and satisfied after eating. Moving from fresh, whole foods to mostly processed foods is strongly linked to the dramatic rise in obesity rates.
    • Obesity is a complex issue with biological, psychological, and social causes. Factors like genetics, emotional eating, trauma, and the food environment all play a role. Stigmatizing or shaming people for their weight is cruel and counterproductive.
    • New weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy work by artificially boosting satiety hormones like GLP-1, helping people feel full faster and eat less. They are showing impressive weight loss results, but also come with potential risks and side effects that are not yet fully understood, especially in the long-term.
    • While these new drugs may help many people, they are not a magic solution. They don't address the underlying drivers of the obesity crisis in the food system and environment. To make a real difference, we need broader changes to make healthy eating the easy, default option.
    • The good news is, each of us can take positive steps today to improve our health, no matter our current weight. Focus on adding more whole, minimally processed foods to your diet, and find physical activities you truly enjoy. Prioritize getting good sleep, managing stress, and building a strong social support network. Small, sustainable lifestyle changes can make a big difference over time. Be patient and kind with yourself in the process. You have the power to transform your health, one choice at a time.

    992: Royals | Skeptical Sunday

What's the point of the publicly funded British Royal family in the modern world? Andrew Gold puts the monarchy under a microscope on this Skeptical Sunday!

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

    • The British monarchy is a centuries-old institution that has had a significant impact on the UK's culture, politics, and history. While the monarch's role is largely ceremonial, the royal family still holds influence and plays a significant part in British society.
    • The British Royal Family receives public funding through the Sovereign Grant, which is calculated as a percentage of the profits made by the Crown Estate. The Sovereign Grant covers official expenses, while the monarch also has personal income from private estates.
    • The monarchy faces challenges in maintaining its relevance in an increasingly democratic and progressive world. The royal family must balance tradition with adapting to changing societal values and expectations.
    • The popularity of individual members of the royal family, such as Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry, can significantly impact public perception of the monarchy as a whole.
    • Despite the controversies and challenges surrounding the British monarchy, it remains an integral part of the nation's identity and continues to captivate people worldwide. By focusing on their roles as symbols of unity, continuity, and tradition, while also embracing positive change and engaging in meaningful charitable work, the royal family can maintain its relevance and contribute to the well-being of the British people and the global community.

990: Jonathan Haidt | How Gen Z Became the Anxious Generation

990: Jonathan Haidt | How Gen Z Became the Anxious Generation

Jonathan Haidt is here to talk about his latest book, The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness.

What We Discuss with Jonathan Haidt:

    • Social media and smartphones have drastically altered childhood since the early 2010s, leading to increased rates of anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide among teens, especially girls.
    • Virtual interactions on social media are disembodied, shallow, and can spread mental health issues among susceptible teens. Prestige biased learning causes teens to emulate influencers, even those promoting unhealthy behaviors. Smartphones and social media also enable sexual predators to easily target children online.
    • Overprotection in the real world and underprotection online are both mistakes that need to be reversed. Parents have allowed kids too much unsupervised screen time while restricting their independence and free play in the physical world out of exaggerated fears.
    • Schools and parents need to set clear boundaries around technology use. No smartphones before high school, no social media until age 16, and phone-free schools from bell to bell are key norms to establish. The longer parents delay introducing these technologies, the better.
    • Although the situation is serious, positive change is possible when parents, educators, and lawmakers work together. Parents can start by giving kids more independence and free play time offline, schools can go phone-free, and governments can pass laws to make online spaces safer for kids. With collective action, we can restore a healthier childhood for the next generation. Small steps like "Free Play Fridays" for neighborhood kids can make a difference right away. By coming together to solve this, we can ensure today's youth have the space to develop into competent, well-adjusted adults.
    • And much more...

    986: Porn | Skeptical Sunday

Has technology weaponized pornography into a public health crisis? Michael Regilio takes us through modern porn's ins and outs on this Skeptical Sunday!

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

    • High-speed internet porn is a recent phenomenon that provides an intense, novel experience unlike traditional pornography, hacking into our brain's evolutionary desires for new mates and triggering dopamine responses similar to drug addiction.
    • Pornography use, especially among adolescents and young adults who grew up with easy access to internet porn, has been linked to erosion of gray matter in the brain's prefrontal cortex, which controls impulse control and decision-making.
    • Porn use has been associated with sexual disorders like erectile dysfunction in young men, as well as difficulties forming emotional bonds and intimacy in relationships.
    • While some psychologists dispute the existence of "porn addiction," neuroscientific evidence shows porn use can lead to compulsive behaviors and brain changes resembling substance addictions.
    • While some political efforts have been made to declare porn a public health crisis, there is little policy action based on scientific evidence to provide resources for treatment and awareness.

    • You've about had it with your autistic boss' cringeworthy conspiracy theories. How can you disagree respectfully and maintain professionalism?
    • As a cancer patient struggling with massive student loans and disability assistance denial, what legal help and guidance is available for navigating private loan regulations while fighting for survival?

984: Susan Casey | Unraveling Mysteries in the Ocean's Darkest Depths

984: Susan Casey | Unraveling Mysteries in the Ocean's Darkest Depths

What challenges can the ocean help us meet, and what must we do to safeguard its treasures? The Underworld author Susan Casey dives deep for answers here!

What We Discuss with Susan Casey:

    • The ocean plays a crucial role in regulating the Earth's climate and serves as the largest carbon sink on the planet, making its preservation essential for mitigating climate change.
    • The ocean is home to a fascinating array of creatures that have adapted to extreme conditions, such as iron-breathing microbes, glass sponges, and jellyfish that can reverse their life cycle.
    • Pollution, including plastics, chemical weapons, and nuclear waste, has severely impacted the ocean ecosystem, with some deep-sea creatures found to have plastic particles embedded in their organs.
    • There are an estimated three million shipwrecks on the ocean floor, preserving valuable historical artifacts and information — such as the Antikythera mechanism, an ancient Greek analog computer.
    • Exploring the ocean can lead to groundbreaking discoveries in medicine, Earth's history, and climate, providing valuable insights for addressing humanity's challenges — provided we safeguard this treasury of knowledge for current and future generations.
    • And much more...

60: Todd Kashdan | The Bright Truth about Your Dark Side

Todd Kashdan (@toddkashdan) is a Professor of Psychology and Senior Scientist at the Center for the Advancement of Well-Being at George Mason University and co-author of The Upside of Your Dark Side: Why Being Your Whole Self -- Not Just Your "Good" Self -- Drives Success and Fulfillment.

What We Discuss with Todd Kashdan:

    • Why trying to be positive and happy all the time may be harming your ability to get things done and achieve the results you want.
    • How what you may think of as negative emotions -- like anger -- can be useful superpowers with the proper awareness and application.
    • The problem with living in a time and place when distraction from discomfort comes in an easier and greater variety than ever before.
    • Why every decision you make now is based on how you expect to feel in the future -- and you probably underestimate your ability to tolerate distress.
    • How you can use the discomfort caveat to ease out of the "put on a happy face" rut around others.
    • And much more...

On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss:

    • How do you know if you're making progress and on track to a better and brighter future if you feel underqualified and inadequate about so much of your life? How can you measure your growth?
    • Sometimes you try so hard to help your loved ones with their issues that you forget to help yourself. Support is close if you know where to find it -- here's where we suggest looking.
    • How do you keep yourself from falling back into old, obsolete patterns of behavior whenever you visit your friends in your old hometown? Aren't you better than that now?
    • You've been on Facebook for 14 years and have never weeded out friends you've only spoken to once in that entire time. Now you're applying to a job and notice one of your obscure connections is VP of the company. Is it tacky to contact them?
    • If you genuinely love networking and meeting new people, you might feel bad about having to turn down lunch with some of them because you just don't have as much time as you used to (especially when they turn into sales pitches in disguise). How do you retreat from these invitations politely?
    • If you're proud of your political activism in college, does it do any harm to bring it up when you're looking for a new job?
    • Should you give up all the guaranteed benefits of your long-term government job to pursue a shaky future in the private sector that could result in more money and reemergence of happiness from that fire and drive you once had, but at a time cost and a possibility of being released or fired and losing those needed benefits for your family?
    • Since returning to your hometown as a successful attorney making the big bucks, one of your friends seems to think you should pay for everything you do together because you make more money. What do you do?
