    • From Curious Teen to Intelligence GuruEven those with questionable interests as teens can develop valuable skills and knowledge, requiring support and guidance rather than judgment.

Even those who seem to be going down a dangerous path as young people may have the potential for good. Jordan Harbinger, a guest on the Darknet Diaries podcast, shared his story of being a curious and mischievous teenager who collected explosives knowledge from online bulletin boards. While this behavior may have raised concerns, it ultimately led him to develop an encyclopedic knowledge and a reputation among his peers. This experience may have played a role in shaping his intelligence and resourcefulness, which served him well in his later life. It's important to remember that young people's brains are not fully formed yet, and they may not fully understand the consequences of their actions. Instead of labeling them as "bad," it's crucial to provide guidance and support to help them navigate the complexities of the world.

    • Journey into the human side of technology through phone conversationsExploring the digital world led Jordan to unexpected discoveries, including listening to personal phone conversations, revealing the depth and complexity of people's lives.

Jordan's exploration of the digital world led him to unexpected discoveries and experiences. Starting as a sysop on pirate boards, he was introduced to dumpster diving for electronic serial numbers and learning to program cell phones. This journey led him to phone hacking, listening to conversations, and eventually stealing a lineman's handset to tap into telephone lines. The hours spent listening to conversations in his neighborhood revealed a man going through a divorce, whose phone calls showcased a range of emotions. This experience showed Jordan the depth and complexity of people's lives, even through the lens of their phone conversations. It was a glimpse into the human side of technology, which fueled his curiosity and passion for hacking even further.

    • Listening to adults' conversations as a teenager broadened Jordan's perspectiveExposure to adult conversations as a teenager fostered empathy and curiosity in Jordan, leading him to explore systems and uncover vulnerabilities, shaping his future interests and pursuits

Listening to adults' conversations as a teenager opened Jordan's eyes to the complexities and humanity of adults, leading him to develop empathy and a deeper interest in people. This experience also sparked his curiosity in understanding systems and exploiting their vulnerabilities, which eventually led him to social engineering and exploring credit card systems. Despite the potential risks, Jordan's actions went unnoticed by law enforcement, but he learned valuable lessons about the importance of timing and the potential consequences of his actions. Overall, this formative experience shaped Jordan's perspective and set the stage for his future interests and pursuits.

    • Curiosity and experimentation can lead to new discoveriesCuriosity and experimentation, even if unconventional, can lead to new interests and potential opportunities, but always within legal and ethical boundaries.

Curiosity and experimentation, even if it involves breaking rules, can lead to new discoveries and potential success. The speaker, Jordan, shares a personal story about his confusion about money as a teenager, which led him to attempt using stolen checks for small purchases. This experience sparked his curiosity about credit cards and eventually led him to explore generating and using fake credit card numbers. Although his actions were illegal, they ultimately led him to a new area of interest and potential opportunities. However, it's important to note that engaging in illegal activities can have serious consequences and is not recommended. Instead, channeling curiosity and experimentation into legal and ethical pursuits can lead to valuable discoveries and personal growth.

    • Encounter with FBI led to guidance and opportunityEven when faced with a mistake, adults can provide understanding and opportunities for growth instead of harsh punishment

Even when faced with the consequences of a prank gone wrong, some adults can show understanding and guidance instead of harsh punishment. The speaker's encounter with the FBI agent after using a stolen credit card led to a conversation about his intelligence and potential. Instead of criminal charges, he was advised to focus on positive pursuits and pay for the damages. This experience, along with his curiosity about private investigators, eventually led him to build a website for a security company that also acted as vigilantes in Detroit. This encounter showed him that not all adults are vindictive, and that sometimes, a little guidance and opportunity can lead to a better future.

    • From Martial Arts to Cybersecurity: An Unconventional UpbringingJordan's unconventional upbringing in martial arts, technology, and social engineering gave him unique skills and experiences that set him apart in the cybersecurity field.

The speaker, Jordan, had an unconventional upbringing in which he combined his skills in martial arts, technology, and social engineering to navigate through various social circles. At a young age, he traded website design for martial arts training with a security company, where he met tough ex-military men and learned about real-life protection work. He also drove agents around and even showed his friends how to create fake online identities to meet girls on AOL, which was a groundbreaking concept at the time. This experience shaped Jordan's perspective and gave him unique skills that set him apart from his peers. Additionally, the story highlights the contrast between Jordan's life and the shady activities of some individuals in the security company, as well as the social norms of the late 90s regarding online communication and meeting people.

    • A 15-year-old girl's dangerous online encounter with predatorsOnline interactions can be dangerous, especially for young people. Reporting incidents to the authorities is crucial, but effective laws and resources are needed to combat cybercrime.

Online interactions can be dangerous, especially for young people. The story shared highlights the experiences of a 15-year-old girl named Jordan, who unknowingly attracted the attention of child predators while using an AOL chat room. Initially, her colleagues found the situation amusing, but soon realized the gravity of the situation when Jordan's boss intervened. The predators were relentless in their attempts to engage with Jordan, and some even asked for her address and tried to arrange meetings. Jordan and her colleagues reported the incidents to the FBI, but the agents were not equipped to handle cybercrime at the time. The investigation was complicated by the fact that the perpetrators were located in different states, and no local PD had jurisdiction. The FBI eventually became more involved as the number of predators increased, and Jordan was asked to provide more information and chat transcripts. It became clear that these predators were willing to cross state lines to meet with a minor, and this was before the popular TV show "To Catch a Predator." The story serves as a reminder of the importance of online safety, especially for young people, and the need for effective laws and resources to combat cybercrime.

    • Teenage Informant for the FBISecrecy in dangerous situations can lead to complications, but open communication can help resolve them.

Even as a teenager, Jordan Harbinger found himself in an unusual situation when he became an informant for the FBI to catch online predators. His parents were initially worried but eventually agreed to his involvement, as long as they were kept informed. However, this secretive work led to complications, such as getting caught using a cell phone in school, which was still uncommon at the time. Despite the challenges, Jordan managed to keep his academic performance up and continued his undercover work, eventually earning a note from the superintendent, principal, and FBI agent to carry his cell phone in school. The experience was a reminder of the importance of communication and transparency, even in complex and potentially dangerous situations.

    • The Power of Teenage Curiosity and DeterminationA young boy's unconventional actions, driven by curiosity and determination, led to catching pedophiles online and eventually shaped his future career.

The power of youthful curiosity and determination, when used for good, can lead to significant impact. The story of Jordan, a teenage boy who worked with the FBI to catch pedophiles online, demonstrates this idea. His actions, though unconventional, led to a sense of vindication and admiration from his community. However, it's important to note that while Jordan's intentions were pure, the methods he used, such as cell phone cloning, had potential for harm and were not fully understood by the authorities at the time. Despite this, Jordan felt like a hero and continued his efforts, eventually growing up to become a lawyer. The experience shaped him, and the skills he gained during his undercover work provided a unique perspective that served him well in his future career.

Focusing on generating business and building relationships can be a game-changer in one's career, leading to partnership and financial success. This approach involves actively seeking opportunities to meet new people, network, and develop connections, rather than solely focusing on becoming an expert in a particular field or area of law. By learning skills in social engineering, body language, nonverbal communication, persuasion, and influence, individuals can effectively generate business and build strong relationships. This approach can lead to personal growth and professional advancement, as well as the ability to teach these skills to others in various industries.

    • Building Relationships is Key for Intelligence ProfessionalsIntelligence officers spend a lot of time on relationship-building, a crucial skill for networking, sales, and social engineering. Continuous learning and social skills are essential for success.

Intelligence officers, contrary to popular belief, spend a significant amount of their time building and managing relationships. This skill, often referred to as social engineering, requires discipline, practice, and the ability to generate trust. Jordan Harbinger, a former punk kid turned successful business owner, learned these skills as a teenager and turned them into valuable tools for networking, sales, and social engineering. The importance of social skills and continuous learning is a recurring theme in Harbinger's life, and he encourages listeners to build their networks before they need them. Harbinger's 6-minute networking course, available for free at jordanharbinger.com/course, teaches these skills and has been popular among guests on his podcast. 993: Johann Hari | The Skinny on 'Magic Pill' Weight-Loss Drugs

Are new weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy "magic" pills that can put an end to the obesity epidemic? Johann Hari is here to give us the skinny!

What We Discuss with Johann Hari:

    • Processed and ultra-processed foods are a major driver of the obesity epidemic, as they undermine the body's natural ability to feel full and satisfied after eating. Moving from fresh, whole foods to mostly processed foods is strongly linked to the dramatic rise in obesity rates.
    • Obesity is a complex issue with biological, psychological, and social causes. Factors like genetics, emotional eating, trauma, and the food environment all play a role. Stigmatizing or shaming people for their weight is cruel and counterproductive.
    • New weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy work by artificially boosting satiety hormones like GLP-1, helping people feel full faster and eat less. They are showing impressive weight loss results, but also come with potential risks and side effects that are not yet fully understood, especially in the long-term.
    • While these new drugs may help many people, they are not a magic solution. They don't address the underlying drivers of the obesity crisis in the food system and environment. To make a real difference, we need broader changes to make healthy eating the easy, default option.
    • The good news is, each of us can take positive steps today to improve our health, no matter our current weight. Focus on adding more whole, minimally processed foods to your diet, and find physical activities you truly enjoy. Prioritize getting good sleep, managing stress, and building a strong social support network. Small, sustainable lifestyle changes can make a big difference over time. Be patient and kind with yourself in the process. You have the power to transform your health, one choice at a time.
    • And much more...

    992: Royals | Skeptical Sunday

    992: Royals | Skeptical Sunday

What's the point of the publicly funded British Royal family in the modern world? Andrew Gold puts the monarchy under a microscope on this Skeptical Sunday!

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

    • The British monarchy is a centuries-old institution that has had a significant impact on the UK's culture, politics, and history. While the monarch's role is largely ceremonial, the royal family still holds influence and plays a significant part in British society.
    • The British Royal Family receives public funding through the Sovereign Grant, which is calculated as a percentage of the profits made by the Crown Estate. The Sovereign Grant covers official expenses, while the monarch also has personal income from private estates.
    • The monarchy faces challenges in maintaining its relevance in an increasingly democratic and progressive world. The royal family must balance tradition with adapting to changing societal values and expectations.
    • The popularity of individual members of the royal family, such as Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Prince William, and Prince Harry, can significantly impact public perception of the monarchy as a whole.
    • Despite the controversies and challenges surrounding the British monarchy, it remains an integral part of the nation's identity and continues to captivate people worldwide. By focusing on their roles as symbols of unity, continuity, and tradition, while also embracing positive change and engaging in meaningful charitable work, the royal family can maintain its relevance and contribute to the well-being of the British people and the global community.

990: Jonathan Haidt | How Gen Z Became the Anxious Generation

990: Jonathan Haidt | How Gen Z Became the Anxious Generation

Jonathan Haidt is here to talk about his latest book, The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness.

What We Discuss with Jonathan Haidt:

    • Social media and smartphones have drastically altered childhood since the early 2010s, leading to increased rates of anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide among teens, especially girls.
    • Virtual interactions on social media are disembodied, shallow, and can spread mental health issues among susceptible teens. Prestige biased learning causes teens to emulate influencers, even those promoting unhealthy behaviors. Smartphones and social media also enable sexual predators to easily target children online.
    • Overprotection in the real world and underprotection online are both mistakes that need to be reversed. Parents have allowed kids too much unsupervised screen time while restricting their independence and free play in the physical world out of exaggerated fears.
    • Schools and parents need to set clear boundaries around technology use. No smartphones before high school, no social media until age 16, and phone-free schools from bell to bell are key norms to establish. The longer parents delay introducing these technologies, the better.
    • Although the situation is serious, positive change is possible when parents, educators, and lawmakers work together. Parents can start by giving kids more independence and free play time offline, schools can go phone-free, and governments can pass laws to make online spaces safer for kids. With collective action, we can restore a healthier childhood for the next generation. Small steps like "Free Play Fridays" for neighborhood kids can make a difference right away. By coming together to solve this, we can ensure today's youth have the space to develop into competent, well-adjusted adults.

    986: Porn | Skeptical Sunday

Has technology weaponized pornography into a public health crisis? Michael Regilio takes us through modern porn's ins and outs on this Skeptical Sunday!

    On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:

    • High-speed internet porn is a recent phenomenon that provides an intense, novel experience unlike traditional pornography, hacking into our brain's evolutionary desires for new mates and triggering dopamine responses similar to drug addiction.
    • Pornography use, especially among adolescents and young adults who grew up with easy access to internet porn, has been linked to erosion of gray matter in the brain's prefrontal cortex, which controls impulse control and decision-making.
    • Porn use has been associated with sexual disorders like erectile dysfunction in young men, as well as difficulties forming emotional bonds and intimacy in relationships.
    • While some psychologists dispute the existence of "porn addiction," neuroscientific evidence shows porn use can lead to compulsive behaviors and brain changes resembling substance addictions.
    • While some political efforts have been made to declare porn a public health crisis, there is little policy action based on scientific evidence to provide resources for treatment and awareness.

256: Malcolm Gladwell | What We Should Know about Talking to Strangers

256: Malcolm Gladwell | What We Should Know about Talking to Strangers

Malcolm Gladwell (@gladwell) has written bestsellers that are probably on your shelf right now, including The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, and What the Dog Saw. His latest book is Talking to Strangers: What We Should Know about the People We Don't Know.

What We Discuss with Malcolm Gladwell:

    • Why, if we don't know how to talk to strangers, we invite conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world.
    • Why the information we gather from face-to-face human interaction isn't as uniquely valuable as we think it is.
    • Why television makes us worse at reading other people.
    • Why we think we can tell if someone is lying, guilty, or deceptive -- and why we're almost always wrong.
    • What determines the direction of Malcolm's projects, and how he researches and organizes the massive amount of information that goes into them.
    • And much more...

365: Benjamin Hardy | How to Break Free from Self-Limiting Beliefs

365: Benjamin Hardy | How to Break Free from Self-Limiting Beliefs

Benjamin Hardy (@BenjaminPHardy) is an organizational psychologist and author of Willpower Doesn't Work: Discover the Hidden Keys to Success and Personality Isn't Permanent: Break Free from Self-Limiting Beliefs and Rewrite Your Story.

What We Discuss with Benjamin Hardy:

    • Why treating the results of a "scientific" personality test like Myers & Briggs or Enneagram as gospel is akin to trusting horoscopes to safely guide your life decisions -- inaccurate and potentially dangerous.
    • Hear the story about how Benjamin and his wife almost didn't get married because a personality test indicated they weren't an ideal match.
    • What looking back at the person you were 10 or 20 years ago should reveal about personality as an unfixed, malleable quality.
    • Why categorizing yourself or accepting labels leads to a tunnel vision of mindlessness that tends to accentuate the negative qualities you believe yourself to have.
    • You're always a work in progress -- you're never "finished." The person you'll be in 10 years may well be as different as you are from the person you were 10 years ago. So who do you want the future you to be?
    • And much more...

    • In spite of having a dream job and a significant other who checks most of your boxes, current circumstances make imagining a future in your native Russia difficult. Unfortunately, this significant other comes from a conservative family and doesn't understand why you'd ever want to move abroad. Are your differences too radical to build a life together?
    • Your boss is an incredible leader who commands respect across the board. Unfortunately, a family tragedy has overwhelmed her with grief. How can your team offer support without intruding on her personal life?
    • Your significant other is great in every respect -- except for when he gets in a "mood" and resorts to calling you names and putting you down. Where do you draw the line on verbal abuse?
    • Is it possible to profit from selling your business idea when you don't have the financial means to create your own startup around that idea?
