#421 - Hamza - How Men Can Survive The Modern Dating World

    enJanuary 13, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • Navigating Toxic Dating and Self-Improvement CommunitiesBe wary of harmful dating and self-improvement subcultures, prioritize holistic growth, and practice critical thinking.

The world of dating and self-improvement for young men can be a complex and potentially harmful landscape, with various subcultures like the red pill, black pill, and manosphere offering both good and bad advice. These communities can be particularly dangerous when individuals become too deeply entrenched and stop questioning the information they consume, leading to stunted growth and even cult-like behaviors. Instead, Hamza advocates for holistic self-improvement, which includes working on mental health, gratitude, mindfulness, and healthy relationships, rather than solely focusing on attracting women or seeing them as the enemy. It's essential for young men to be critical thinkers and not get trapped in toxic communities that hinder their growth.

    • Reframing beliefs for sustainable changeUnderstanding the mental aspect of habits and reframing beliefs can lead to more sustainable and positive changes than focusing solely on the physical act.

The benefits of reducing masturbation frequency go beyond just the physical act itself. The perception and story we tell ourselves about our habits and the person we believe we are as a result of those habits play a significant role in our ability to make lasting changes. The NoFap community, while well-intentioned, can unintentionally create an unhealthy obsession with the idea of "losing benefits" if one were to relapse. This can lead to feelings of shame and failure, creating a negative cycle. Instead, focusing on reframing our beliefs and self-image around the habit can lead to more sustainable and positive changes. The struggle to quit habits like masturbation or unhealthy eating often stems more from our mental perception of ourselves and our relationship with the activity, rather than the activity itself. By recognizing this and addressing the underlying beliefs, we can make progress towards our goals.

    • Focusing on both environmental design and inner resourcesUsing environmental design and inner resources together helps build momentum and tackle deeper issues to reach goals

While environmental design can be helpful in building habits and avoiding temptations, it may not be enough on its own. It's important to give ourselves assistance in the form of self-belief, willpower, and addressing the underlying causes of our habits. The initial tools we use to start a habit may not be the ones that carry us through to the end. By focusing on both environmental design and our inner resources, we can build momentum and eventually tackle the deeper issues that keep us from reaching our goals. It's a process of gradual progress, allowing us to gain capacity and address the root causes of our habits. Even those struggling with self-development and depression can benefit from this approach, starting with small steps and gradually building up to tackle deeper challenges.

    • Feeling isolated on the path of self-improvementDespite challenges and feeling alone, continue to pursue personal growth for a rewarding outcome.

Self-improvement can be a lonely journey, especially when those around you don't share the same desire for growth. This was illustrated through the discussion of individuals who have made progress but struggle to keep others motivated and inspired. The analogy of Plato's allegory of the cave was used to explain this concept further. When one person experiences the truth and the potential for a better life, but their friends remain in the darkness, they can feel isolated and even ostracized. This phenomenon, known as "tall poppy syndrome," can be particularly prevalent in British culture and holds many back from reaching their full potential. It's important for those on the path of self-improvement to remember that the journey may be challenging, but the reward is worth it. They should continue to strive for growth, even if it means standing out from the crowd.

    • Embrace pain and suffering for growthInstead of fearing pain and suffering, see them as opportunities for growth and transformation. Adjust to the higher resolution of life by embracing challenges and transforming discomfort into pleasure.

Suffering is an inevitable part of growth and deep introspection, but instead of trying to escape it, we should embrace it and transform it into something that enriches our lives. This was the message delivered by Jordan Peterson during one of his talks, encouraging people to go deeper into their consciousness rather than regressing back to a lower state. The analogy of the person stepping out of Plato's cave and adjusting to the higher resolution of the world around them illustrates this concept. Additionally, the idea that the more we challenge ourselves, whether it be through physical pain or emotional discomfort, the less painful it becomes and eventually turns into pleasure, was emphasized through the examples of gym workouts and cold therapy. Overall, the key takeaway is that pain and suffering are not to be feared, but rather seen as opportunities for growth and transformation.

    • The power of mindset and storytelling in shaping our experiencesOur mindset and the stories we tell ourselves about habits and experiences can greatly impact their difficulty and enjoyment. Reframing challenges as opportunities can make them easier and more enjoyable.

Our mindset and the story we tell ourselves about a situation can greatly impact our experience of it. Using the example of cold tub sessions, if we approach it as a challenging battle, we may tense up and find it more difficult. But if we reframe it as an opportunity for personal growth and a fascinating experience, we may find it easier and even enjoyable. This concept applies to various habits and situations. Additionally, the discussion touched upon the topic of Britney Spears' recent Instagram post and the potential implications of modern feminism encouraging women to show off their bodies. The speaker expressed concern that this may not align with the original feminist movement's intentions. Overall, the key takeaway is that our mindset and the narratives we create around habits and experiences can significantly shape our reality.

    • Britney Spears' naked selfies: A sign of confidence or instability? The complexities of fame, mental health, and individual autonomy were discussed in relation to Britney Spears' decision to post naked selfies on Instagram, highlighting the need for empathy and nuanced perspectives when interpreting public figures' actions.

The complexities of fame, mental health, and individual autonomy were highlighted in the discussion about Britney Spears' decision to post naked selfies on Instagram after gaining back some independence from her father. While some may view this as a confident and liberating act, others believe it could be a sign of instability or a desperate cry for attention. The debate also touched upon the impact of fame on individuals, particularly child stars, and the potential harm caused by the negativity bias on the Internet. Overall, the conversation underscored the need for empathy, understanding, and nuanced perspectives when interpreting public figures' actions.

    • The Negative Influence of Popular Red Pill YouTubersEmulating negative Red Pill YouTubers can limit potential for healthy relationships and hinder personal growth through addiction to negative media

While some popular Red Pill YouTubers may offer seemingly helpful advice, their negative and degenerate influence can limit young men's potential for attracting healthy relationships. The self-fulfilling prophecy of emulating these YouTubers can lead to attracting only women who fit the negative stereotypes perpetuated in their content. Moreover, consuming such negative media can become an addiction, hindering personal growth. The entertainment value of such content should not overshadow its inherently harmful impact. Instead, seeking out positive influences and healthy relationships is essential for personal growth and development.

    • Men finding validation through criticizing women onlineOnline content criticizing women can provide instant gratification and a sense of empowerment for some men, but it lacks substance and promotes negative behaviors.

The popularity of certain controversial content on platforms like TikTok and YouTube lies in the instant gratification and sense of vindication it provides to a large audience of men who have felt rejected or hurt by women. Shows featuring men criticizing or "shitting on" women attract a loyal following due to the feeling of empowerment and validation these viewers experience. However, this content often lacks substance and does not promote personal growth or positive change. The Internet's shift towards negative and sensational content is a concern, as it can lead to a decrease in empathy, serotonin production, and overall well-being. Instead of focusing on tearing others down, it's essential to strive for self-improvement and positive interactions with others.

    • From pick-up artist to healthy relationshipsRecognize and move beyond the adversarial mindset of PUA communities to build meaningful, positive relationships.

The pick-up artist (PUA) community, which emerged from a place of lack of communication skills and understanding of healthy relationships, has evolved into various sub-communities like red pill, manosphere, and alpha/beta dynamics. These communities perpetuate a zero-sum mentality, viewing any woman's gain as a man's loss and vice versa. This adversarial relationship is harmful and not conducive to healthy, positive relationships. The speaker's personal growth through therapy, meditation, journaling, and reading has allowed him to see women as equals and valuable partners rather than objects to be conquered. The language and terminology may have changed, but the underlying dynamics remain the same. It's essential to recognize and move beyond this adversarial mindset to build meaningful, positive relationships.

    • Hypocrisy and societal norms around casual sexIt's hypocritical to judge women for casual sex while engaging in it oneself, societal norms need reevaluation, and our actions are influenced by both conscious and subconscious minds, leading to fatherlessness and a lack of strong role models.

It's hypocritical and harmful to judge women for engaging in casual sex while engaging in similar behaviors oneself, all the while expecting them to adhere to traditional standards. The speaker acknowledges the need for reevaluating societal norms around casual sex and the importance of preserving the sacredness of sex. However, recognizing these issues doesn't make one a philosophical figure; it may simply stem from personal frustration. The speaker shares their personal struggle with restraining themselves from casual sex despite their conscious intentions. Ultimately, our actions are influenced by both our conscious and subconscious minds, and our biology plays a significant role in our desires. The societal issue of casual sex contributes to fatherlessness and a lack of strong role models for future generations.

    • Understanding men and women dynamics: self-sufficiency, honesty, and open relationshipsBe self-sufficient, honest, and adapt to open relationship norms for stronger, authentic connections

Understanding the dynamics between men and women, particularly the concept of neediness, is crucial for building fulfilling relationships. Mark Manson's work emphasizes the importance of being self-sufficient and not relying on others to complete you. Jeffrey Miller's "Mating Mind" also highlights the importance of honesty and rationality in attracting women. The future of relationships may involve more open and non-monogamous arrangements due to increasing competition and evolving societal norms. However, this shift could lead to challenges and complexities in navigating relationships. Overall, understanding these concepts and adapting to changing social dynamics can help individuals build stronger, more authentic connections.

    • Ancient polygyny and modern polyamory: Implications for civilizationThe shift towards promoting polyamory in modern feminism could lead to societal instability, as seen in ancient times with polygyny, and it's crucial to consider the potential consequences.

The potential shift towards promoting polyamorous relationships as the next frontier for feminism could have significant implications for civilization. During ancient times, the agricultural revolution led to polygyny, which created a socially unstable environment with an abundance of available women controlled by older men and a large number of young men unable to marry. This situation could potentially lead to societal unrest. Furthermore, modern romantic notions have changed women's expectations, and emotional connection and time with their partners are essential. The media heavily influences our dating and sexual lives, and the rise of new age dating shows could further normalize these alternative relationship structures. It is crucial to consider the potential consequences of these societal shifts and strive for a balanced and stable society where everyone's emotional and physical needs are met.

    • Modern dating culture and Love Island's impactPeople prioritize personal gain and instant gratification over long-term commitments, but it's important to find someone who is as close to appropriate as possible.

Love Island, a popular dating reality show, serves as a reflection of modern dating culture, where relationships are seen as interchangeable and superficial. The final challenge of splitting or stealing money highlights the game-like aspect of the show, which can be disheartening for those seeking authentic connections. However, it also underscores the reality that people often prioritize personal gain and instant gratification over long-term commitments. Rolo's perspective, as discussed, emphasizes the importance of recognizing that there isn't one perfect person for everyone and that the goal is to find someone who is as close to appropriate as possible. The challenges of modern dating, including the myth of the one, gender roles, and societal norms, can be overwhelming. While there may not be a straightforward solution, the potential future could involve individuals turning to virtual reality for intimacy and connection, further blurring the lines between reality and fantasy.

    • Exploring the Futures of Men's Lives: Sedation vs. Self-ImprovementSome men seek sedation through technology, while others focus on personal growth. Understanding different perspectives and tailored solutions is crucial for addressing diverse needs.

The discussion revolves around the potential futures of men's lives, with some men advocating for a life of sedation through technology and others advocating for personal growth and self-improvement. The speaker acknowledges the appeal of the sedation option for those who struggle with intimacy and relationships, but ultimately rejects it as not the life he wants. He also acknowledges the limitations of his perspective as a tall, attractive man and considers the challenges faced by those with fewer opportunities for growth and agency. The speaker expresses empathy for those who require more specialized assistance and emphasizes that their content is geared towards those who are further along in their personal growth journey. The discussion also touches upon the potential impact of technology and social media on people's lives, with some feeling trapped in a poverty trap and others finding fulfillment in virtual worlds. Overall, the conversation highlights the importance of understanding different perspectives and the need for tailored solutions to address the diverse needs of individuals.

    • Improving physical appearance boosts attractivenessFocus on building a muscular body to enhance attractiveness, regardless of ethnicity. Societal standards divide attractiveness into top and bottom percentiles, but improving physical appearance can lead to confidence and increased attractiveness.

Physical appearance plays a significant role in perceived attractiveness, and improving one's body through weightlifting and losing fat can increase attractiveness, regardless of ethnicity. The speaker shares his personal experience of feeling unattractive due to his brown skin but realizing that his negative mindset was the real issue. He also mentions the concept of "prey eyes" and how some men in the black pill community believe certain physical features make a man less attractive. However, he introduces Wheatwaffles, a black pill YouTuber who changed his perspective and emphasized the importance of building a muscular body as the most effective way to improve attractiveness. The speaker agrees with this advice and encourages men to focus on improving their physical appearance before considering more extreme solutions. He also mentions the societal divide between the top and bottom percentiles in terms of attractiveness and how being below an 8 out of 10 may put one in the bottom category. Overall, the key takeaway is that physical appearance can be improved, and doing so can lead to increased attractiveness and confidence.

    • Focus on making continuous improvements, not perfectionImproving in small ways can lead to significant gains, focus on personal growth, and don't compare yourself to others.

You don't need to be exceptional in every aspect of your life to stand out from the crowd. The competition is often so low that making small improvements can lead to significant gains. For example, going to the gym a few times a week places you in the top percentage of people who are physically active. Similarly, working on your charisma, confidence, or looks can help you outshine those around you who aren't making any effort. The key is to focus on progressive overload, making continuous improvements, and not getting discouraged by comparing yourself to those who are in different races or races entirely. By setting realistic goals and focusing on your own progress, you can make significant strides in your personal growth and enjoy the benefits of a better life. We bring on our first caller, who has been in a long distance relationship for a long time with her boyfriend. Our next caller finds herself stuck in a toxic work environment when a situationship starts to go astray. Having an intense  emotional relationship with someone you work with everyday, our caller feels stress when not being able to set proper boundaries both at work and in the situationship with her coworker. Our last caller struggles when her husband's friend continues to try to insert himself and befriend our caller’s family. After her mother says she’s getting DMs from this friend, our caller is unsure how to read his intentions and how to set boundaries while also potentially being supportive if need be.
