77: How To Get Rich and Save Lives by Talking Dirty

    enOctober 03, 2017

    Podcast Summary

    • Craven Laycock's attempt to stifle creativity leads to unexpected success and lives savedAdversity can lead to personal growth and unexpected success, even when it comes from an attempt to stifle creativity. This can lead to valuable lessons and opportunities for making a positive impact on others.

Sometimes adversity can lead to unexpected success and personal growth. The story of the aspiring writer suspended by Craven Laycock, the dastardly dean of Dartmouth, is a prime example. Instead of being deterred by the punishment, the student continued to write under an alias and went on to become a successful author. This experience instilled in him a deep appreciation for characters who lived up to their names, a valuable lesson he applied throughout his career. Interestingly, during World War 2, this same author used his skills to save lives by addressing the numerous non-combat related issues faced by American soldiers. From preventing accidents and frostbite to addressing security concerns and venereal disease, his work significantly improved the safety and morale of the troops. In essence, Craven Laycock's attempt to stifle the writer's creativity inadvertently set the stage for his future success and the lives saved during the war.

    • Creating irreverent training films for soldiers during WWIIDuring WWII, the U.S. military used irreverent training films featuring Private Snafu to engage soldiers and teach valuable lessons through humor and contrasting societal norms.

During World War II, the U.S. military recognized the need to combat ignorance and complacency among soldiers, leading to the creation of a series of training films. Major Frank, in charge of the film division, knew traditional approaches wouldn't work, so he collaborated with a subversive captain. Together, they developed Private Snafu, an irreverent cartoon character who embodied soldiers' mistakes and faced the consequences hilariously. Snafu's misadventures tackled various topics, often with adult themes and humor, which resonated with soldiers. Despite the character's frequent demise, the troops appreciated the subversive tone and learned valuable lessons. These films were a stark contrast to the societal norms back home, with their depiction of nudity, drinking, and innuendo. Ultimately, Private Snafu's irreverent approach to training proved effective in engaging soldiers and preparing them for the challenges of war.

    • From a suspended writer to an iconic character creatorCraven Laycock, a discouraged writer, unexpectedly created Private Snafu, a groundbreaking character during WWII, through collaboration with Chuck Jones and Mel Blanc. His early struggles and experiences shaped his future success.

The unlikely origin of the iconic animated character, Private Snafu, came from a suspended aspiring writer named Craven Laycock. This writer, who was once discouraged by his teacher, went on to create Private Snafu in collaboration with Chuck Jones and Mel Blanc during World War II. The character, known for his profanity and subversive humor, was groundbreaking and saved lives by changing the behavior of American soldiers. After being declassified in 1980, the Snafu films can now be seen online, although their shock value has been somewhat diminished by popular culture references. Interestingly, Craven Laycock's former student later reunited with Chuck Jones and created another iconic character, a towering gargoyle with a villainous name, which some believe was an homage to his former teacher. This unexpected turn of events highlights the power of perseverance and the impact of early experiences on creative endeavors.

    • The Power of a PseudonymDr. Seuss' alias allowed him to create beloved characters and stories, while good nutrition helps protect our bodies from harmful substances like lead.

The pseudonym "Dr. Seuss" played a pivotal role in the successful career of Theodor Geisel. His alias, born from a moment of inspiration and a bottle of moonshine, allowed him to create beloved characters and stories that have been enjoyed by generations. Without this alias, we may have missed out on iconic figures like the Sneetches and the Lorax. Furthermore, it's important to note that good nutrition can help protect our bodies from harmful substances, such as lead. This simple yet effective measure, as emphasized by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, can make a significant difference in maintaining good health. So, remember to prioritize your nutrition and learn more about lead safety at michigan.gov/myledsafe.

IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADE™…

… my guest fits right into the podcast transition to The Human Upgrade because he gets into the grittiness of what humans can do to level themselves up. No. 1 New York Times bestselling author Robert Greene shares science-backed knowledge about human nature.

You know you want to be more powerful, more in control and excellent at what you do.

Robert’s insights help you do just that. He gives you actionable tips that help you unlock limitations you may be putting on yourself so you can move your life upward and forward. (Similar to something I like to tell my team is great momentum: “up and to the right.”)

World leaders, military generals, business executives, philosophers, and hip-hop moguls alike revere Robert’s books.

After writing about mastery and power for more than two decades, he’s now become a TikTok sensation and the universal truth for a new generation.

He’s one of my favorite authors who’s profoundly influenced my own life and been on the podcast twice before. Both episodes are must listens: The 48 Laws of Power – #380 and The Laws of Human Nature – #575. I asked him back to talk about his latest book: “The Daily Laws: 366 Meditations on Power, Seduction, Mastery, Strategy, and Human Nature.”

“In “The 48 Laws of Power,” I talk about deception and con artists,” Robert says. “But in The Laws of Human Nature, it's almost about self-deception, how we're con artists with ourselves, how we create an image of ourselves as being morally right, being a good person, being intelligent, being rational, being empathetic. Whereas in fact, we're usually quite far below that ideal. … Because your default position is to always look externally and blame other people.”

In “The Daily Laws,” he distills the best of his previous books and never-before-published material in to one amazing life guide for you. He lays out themes for each month of the year: Power, seduction, persuasion, strategy, human nature, toxic people, self-control, mastery, psychology, leadership, adversity and creativity. Within these themes he features a “daily law” for you to follow.

“By not looking at ourselves in an honest way, and glossing over our own flaws and weaknesses, we become trapped in patterns of behavior that we cannot control,” Robert says in his new book. “As the years go by, and the misreadings, missteps, and unrealistic decisions pile up, we can become bitter confused, and damaged.”

“The Daily Laws” is designed to reverse [these] toxic patterns and reconnect you to reality,” Robert says. “It takes aim at the various delusions we have all absorbed and seeks to attune your mind instead to the most entrenched traits of human nature and how our brains actually operate.”

Listen on for the truth bombs.

Survival Is A Creative Act: Suleika Jaouad’s American Symphony of Contrast—Cancer, Art, Music, & Life
What do you do when the power goes out? You improvise and turn it into a creative act.  At the age of 22, confronted with a leukemia diagnosis amid the tumult beyond her control, Suleika Jaouad made a profound decision to embrace the art of journaling. Deliberately opting to distill insights from her affliction, she endeavored to endure her newfound residency in a Manhattan hospital in a meaningful and aesthetically resonant manner while giving ink to the intricacies that proved profoundly challenging to articulate. What began as a daily journal evolved into Life, Interrupted, an Emmy award-winning column and video series showcased in The New York Times, chronicling Suleika’s experiences from her hospital bed.  Our conversation today revolves around her leukemia diagnosis at a young age, the relinquishment of independence and identity in the throes of illness, the transformative power of writing as both agency and healing, and the embrace of the tumultuous and uncertain in-between space that defines life post-illness. We also discuss her newly intimate Netflix documentary, American Symphony—a beautiful exploration of Suleika and her husband, John Batiste’s lives individually and together.  This is exchange is about what it means to live a creative life, to be in a creative, collaborative relationship, and how mindfully to navigate hardship.  I hope it will be a wellspring of inspiration for you.
