Kimmy also shares her desire to keep certain aspects of herself private. During the conversation, they touch on various topics including their past, posture issues, and their thoughts on violent media. Kimmy mentions her morning routine and her struggle with touching her toes, while Ian shares his failed attempt at working out. Overall, the conversation reveals the complexities and nuances of Kimmy's character, offering a deeper understanding of her as a person.

    • The Influence of Upbringing and Environment on Personality and BehaviorOur personalities and behaviors are shaped by various factors, including upbringing, experiences, and environmental demands. Self-awareness, adaptability, and understanding these influences can help us navigate life's challenges.

Our personality and behavior can be influenced by various factors, including our upbringing, experiences, and the demands of our environment. For instance, the speaker in this conversation shares how her bubbly and upbeat personality comes from her mother's influence and how she uses meditation to manage stress and maintain a positive attitude, especially when on camera. Additionally, the speaker discusses her experience with working out, which led her to feel lightheaded and nauseous, and how she adjusts her form and pace to avoid injury. Overall, the conversation highlights the importance of self-awareness, adaptability, and the impact of our background on our present actions.

    • Understanding Individual Differences in Coping with StressPeople have unique ways of managing stress and distractions, and what works for one may not work for another. Embrace individual differences and seek help when needed.

People have unique ways of dealing with stress and distractions, and what works for one person may not work for another. For instance, some people may find meditation helpful, while others, like Kimmy and Kevin, may find it challenging due to their high energy levels and easily distracted nature. Kimmy's positive attitude and need to not be a burden to others stem from her experiences growing up as a big sister and learning to handle things independently. However, it's important to remember that asking for help is a sign of strength and not a burden. Additionally, some myths, like the one about sharks needing to keep moving to survive, can be debunked with research. Overall, understanding and accepting our individual differences and limitations is crucial for personal growth and well-being.

    • The Importance of Communication and Seeking HelpCommunication and seeking help are healthy parts of life. Find a balance, process thoughts before sharing, and open up for stronger relationships and self-understanding.

Many people, including ourselves as kids, have kept important matters to ourselves out of fear of judgment or bothering others. This can lead to feelings of isolation and unnecessary stress. As adults, some of us may have overcorrected and become excessive communicators, while others may still struggle with opening up. It's essential to find a balance and understand that communication and seeking help when needed are healthy and normal parts of life. Additionally, acknowledging and processing our thoughts before sharing them can prevent unintentional harm to others. Overall, being open about our experiences and emotions can lead to stronger relationships and a better understanding of ourselves and others.

    • Balancing honesty and considerationEffective communication requires honesty, but delivering truth respectfully to build strong relationships.

Effective communication involves considering the motivation behind our words and the potential impact they may have on others. Being blunt can be a powerful tool, but it's essential to read the room and deliver the truth in a respectful way. Passive aggressive behavior and withholding the truth can lead to unresolved issues and damaged relationships. It's important to strive for honesty while also being mindful of the feelings and emotions of those around us. Cultural differences can also play a role in communication styles, with some cultures valuing bluntness and others prioritizing emotional sensitivity. Ultimately, finding a balance between honesty and consideration is key to building strong, healthy relationships.

    • When pushed, the speaker stands up for themselvesThe speaker values stability in conflicts but can fiercely assert themselves when sensing advantage-taking, influenced by a lifelong love of comedy.

The speaker has a history of being compliant in arguments and relationships, but when they sense someone trying to take advantage of them, they will fiercely assert themselves. Comedy has always been a significant part of their life, as they grew up watching shows like Monty Python and The Princess Bride, and SNL with their family. The speaker values maintaining stability in confrontations, but when necessary, they will not hesitate to stand up for themselves or their loved ones. The speaker's appreciation for comedy likely influenced their ability to find humor in difficult situations and approach conflicts in a unique way.

    • Discovering new passions later in lifePeople can uncover hidden interests and pursue new passions at any age, even if they didn't consider them before.

People's passions and interests can surface later in life, even if they didn't realize it earlier. The speaker in this conversation didn't consider herself a comedy or musical theater enthusiast when she was younger, but she discovered her love for it much later in life. Similarly, another person in the conversation didn't imagine they would pursue acting or comedy, having been a "cool jock" in high school. These experiences show that people can discover new passions and pursue them, no matter what their past experiences or assumptions may be. Additionally, the conversation touched on the importance of consent and appropriate behavior, emphasizing that everyone should respect each other's boundaries.

    • Philippine Karaoke Culture and the 'My Way Murders'The Filipino culture cherishes karaoke, but unfortunate incidents like the 'My Way Murders' have occurred due to poor singing, not dampening the community's passion for this tradition.

The Filipino culture places a significant emphasis on karaoke. This tradition runs deep within the community, with many naturally talented singers and dancers emerging from it. Karaoke parties were a common occurrence in the speaker's childhood, and the practice continues to be popular. However, there is a darker side to this phenomenon. In the early 2000s, a series of murders, known as the "My Way Murders," occurred in the Philippines due to people singing Frank Sinatra's "My Way" poorly during karaoke sessions. These incidents led to fights and even deaths. Despite this, the love for karaoke remains strong in the Filipino community, making it an essential part of their cultural identity.

    • Misunderstanding ethnicity and identityRecognize and respect the complexity of individual identity. Avoid making assumptions based on appearances or last names.

Ethnicity and identity can be complex and often misunderstood. The speaker shares an experience of being mistaken for a different ethnicity due to a Spanish last name, despite being Filipino. This confusion and assumptions can happen frequently, especially in professional settings. The speaker also discusses the pressure to identify with one side of their heritage over the other and the challenges of dealing with assumptions and stereotypes. The conversation highlights the importance of recognizing and respecting the complexity of individual identity and avoiding making assumptions based on appearances or last names.

    • Exploring the complexities of identityEmbrace the journey of self-discovery, educate yourself about your history and cultures, and encourage open-mindedness and curiosity.

Identity is a complex and ongoing journey. The speaker shares her experiences growing up in a diverse community and the challenges she faced in navigating her racial identity. She emphasizes that there is no need to feel pressured to assimilate to one side or identify with just one thing. Instead, she encourages everyone to educate themselves about their history and cultures, which can lead to a deeper understanding of themselves and others. The speaker also reflects on the importance of learning about one's past and the consequences of wiping out someone's culture and history. Overall, she encourages an open-minded and curious approach to identity and learning.

    • Diverse experiences within California and pressure to succeed impact mental healthCalifornia's diversity and societal pressure to succeed can lead to different experiences and mental health challenges, emphasizing the importance of recognizing personal impacts on well-being.

California's vast size and diversity can lead to vastly different experiences and perceptions, even within the same country. This was highlighted in the speaker's personal experience of feeling out of place in rural Pennsylvania after growing up in LA. Additionally, the pressure to succeed and achieve academically, fueled by family expectations and societal norms, can contribute to anxiety and an overloaded schedule for children. The speaker's own experience of being an overachiever, involved in numerous activities and feeling the weight of academic performance, led to depression and a desire to quit some commitments. Overall, the discussion emphasizes the importance of recognizing the impact of one's environment and personal experiences on mental health and well-being.

    • Childhood Pressure and Adult AnxietyExcessive childhood pressure can lead to anxiety, stress, and unhealthy coping mechanisms in adulthood. Maintain a balanced lifestyle and reduce self-imposed pressure to promote long-term well-being.

Excessive self-imposed pressure during childhood can lead to anxiety, stress, and unhealthy coping mechanisms in adulthood. The speaker shares how they felt the need to juggle numerous activities, put immense pressure on themselves to excel academically, and ultimately developed unhealthy eating habits as a way to cope with stress. They acknowledge that this experience may be even more intense for future generations due to increasing competition and expectations. The speaker's story highlights the importance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle and reducing self-imposed pressure at a young age.

    • Affordable and convenient fast food contributes to eating disordersEating disorders are prevalent, influenced by affordable, convenient fast food, and access to healthy options remains a challenge for many.

Eating disorders, including binge eating, are common issues affecting a significant portion of the population, particularly in areas with easy access to cheap, unhealthy food. The affordability and convenience of fast food contribute to unhealthy eating habits, which can lead to various health problems. The speaker personally struggled with binge eating and experimented with extreme diets. The complexities of the food system, including subsidies and access to fresh produce, exacerbate these issues. It's essential to recognize that many people experience similar struggles and that healthy options are not always accessible or affordable for everyone.

    • Focusing on food and weight loss for self-love is harmfulInstead of linking self-worth to physical appearance, learn to listen to your body, find self-worth internally, and focus on joy and fulfillment.

Focusing on food and weight loss as a means to improve self-love and self-worth is a harmful mindset. Instead, it's essential to learn to listen to your body, identify the root causes of your eating habits, and find self-worth outside of physical appearance. This process involves introspection, self-affirmation, and a shift towards focusing on internal feelings of happiness and well-being. It's important to remember that everyone's journey towards self-love is unique and that there is no one-size-fits-all solution. It takes time, effort, and a commitment to self-care. The speaker emphasized that it's essential to recognize and appreciate the things about yourself beyond your physical appearance and to focus on the things that bring you joy and fulfillment. It's also important to remember that setbacks and challenges are a natural part of the journey towards self-love and that it's essential to be kind and compassionate to yourself throughout the process.

    • Open communication and supportive relationships improve mental healthSpeak up about negative thoughts, seek validation, surround yourself with uplifting people, and cut out toxic relationships for better mental health

Open communication and supportive relationships are essential for mental well-being. Speaking up about negative thoughts and seeking validation from trusted individuals can help challenge self-criticism and prevent a downward spiral of anxiety or low self-esteem. Additionally, it's important to surround oneself with people who uplift and support, while recognizing that every relationship will have its ups and downs. Remember, if someone's intention is to hurt or bring you down, it's crucial to cut them out of your life. Overall, being open, communicative, and surrounding yourself with positive influences can significantly improve your mental health journey.

    • Effective communication in relationshipsExpress feelings honestly, consider others' perspectives, recognize when to let go, and respond gracefully to unexpected challenges.

Open and honest communication is essential in maintaining healthy relationships. It's important to express how we feel when we're hurt, but it's equally important to consider the other person's perspective and give them the opportunity to make amends. At the same time, it's crucial to recognize when a relationship is not beneficial to our well-being and to have the courage to let go. Moreover, we learned from Chris's story that even the most elegant and seemingly perfect situations can go awry in unexpected ways. Despite the embarrassment of falling into a puddle of melted dry ice and almost knocking over a wedding cake, Chris handled the situation with grace and professionalism. It's essential to remember that mistakes happen, and how we respond to them can make all the difference. In essence, being open, honest, and communicative in our relationships, and being resilient in the face of unexpected challenges, are two powerful tools for living a fulfilling and empowered life.

    • Challenging beliefs and discovering unexpected truthsStaying curious and open-minded can lead to new discoveries and challenges to societal norms. For instance, singing Frank Sinatra's 'My Way' in the Philippines could be dangerous, while sharks are generally not a threat to humans.

Our perceptions and beliefs about certain things can be challenged and even debunked, leading to new discoveries and learnings. During a recent SmoshCast episode, the hosts discussed their experiences with unexpected outcomes when it comes to popular songs and sharks. It was revealed that in the Philippines, singing Frank Sinatra's "My Way" could potentially put one's life in danger. This revelation came as a surprise to one of the hosts, who had no prior knowledge of this belief. This incident highlights how societal norms and beliefs can vary greatly from place to place, and how important it is to be open-minded and adaptable. Another surprising discovery was that sharks are not as dangerous as commonly believed. Contrary to popular belief, sharks are generally not a threat to humans and are actually quite chill. This misconception is a common example of how our fears and misunderstandings can shape our perceptions of reality. Overall, this discussion emphasizes the importance of staying curious and open-minded, and the value of learning new things, no matter how unexpected or seemingly insignificant they may be. It also serves as a reminder that our beliefs and perceptions are not set in stone, and that there is always room for growth and expansion of knowledge.

Panic Attacks due to a Feud Between Husband and Daughter

Panic Attacks due to a Feud Between Husband and Daughter
When a patient asked me how to deal with panic attacks that were caused by a feud between her husband and her daughter that was pulling her part, she asked me if I could help. Essentially, my advice was to disengage from the process, to set a boundary with both of them that this is their problem and they need to resolve it without drawing you into it and forcing you to take sides or be a go-between. Listen for my entire response.
