    enMarch 24, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • Finding common ground through shared experiencesAge and differences in interests don't have to be barriers to connection. Shared experiences and finding common ground can bridge gaps.

Despite the generational gap, connections and shared experiences can bridge differences. The speaker reminisced about their family history and how their grandparents got married young, while they were engrossed in a hobby. They also shared their excitement over a common interest in a pro diver turned knitter. The conversation then shifted to the speaker's experience of helping their mother during a home intrusion. Through these shared experiences, they found common ground and were able to connect, showing that age and differences in interests don't have to be barriers. Additionally, the speaker expressed their admiration for the ability to learn new skills through resources like YouTube, despite finding it challenging for themselves. Overall, the conversation highlights the importance of finding shared experiences and connections, even in the most unexpected places.

    • Laundry mishaps and podcast promotionUnexpected challenges can arise in even simple tasks, but learning from mistakes and keeping a positive attitude can lead to growth.

Even simple tasks like doing laundry can be challenging and lead to unexpected outcomes. The speaker shared a humorous anecdote about ruining his pants in the wash and his ongoing struggle with figuring out the right way to do laundry. He also mentioned his unconventional rule for washing jeans and his admiration for a friend's podcast. The conversation then transitioned into welcoming a guest, Britney Broski, and promoting her podcast. The speakers also joked about the idea of hiring a TaskRabbit to help hang plaques for reaching YouTube milestones. Despite the lighthearted tone, the conversation touched on the idea that everyone, no matter how experienced, can encounter unexpected challenges and that it's important to keep trying and learn from mistakes.

    • Exploring Creativity and Ethics in Fan FictionFan fiction can spark creativity and imagination, but ethical considerations are important, especially when the subjects are real people. Opinions on writing fan fiction about real people vary, so it's essential to consider individual perspectives and use creativity responsibly.

Fan fiction, regardless of whether it's based on real people or fictional characters, can be a source of creativity and imagination for fans. However, it's important to consider the ethical implications, especially when the subjects are real people. In the discussion, the speakers shared their experiences of writing fan fiction about Cole and Dylan Sprouse, mistaking one for the other in their Snapchat memories. They also talked about the difference between being a fan of Cody or Zack from "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody," and how it influences one's perspective. While they found the idea of writing fan fiction about real people intriguing, they acknowledged that the consensus on the matter is not clear-cut. Some believe it's inappropriate, while others see it as a harmless form of expression. Ultimately, it's up to each individual to decide where they stand on the issue, and to use their creativity responsibly.

    • Exploring a Celebrity Crush through Fan FictionFan fiction can provide a platform for exploring deep, complex emotions towards a celebrity, leading to self-reflection and understanding of professional boundaries.

The discussion revolved around the fascination with a particular public figure, who is often typecast in his roles due to his physical appearance. The speaker shared her experience of writing fan fiction based on her celebrity crush, Matthew Gubler, who plays Dr. Spencer Reid in Criminal Minds. The fan fiction involved a romantic relationship between the therapist character and the patient, which led to professional complications. The speaker explained that she had written this fan fiction with her friends over FaceTime and had developed a three-tiered system for having a celebrity crush. The least intense tier, Tier 3, refers to being in love with a celebrity while consuming their content. The conversation also touched upon the actor's performance skills and the impact of his public image.

    • Three Tiers of Celebrity CrushesCelebrity crushes can be categorized into three tiers based on intensity: casual, deeper, and most intense. Each level impacts fans differently and can range from occasional attraction to all-consuming obsession.

Celebrity crushes can be categorized into different tiers based on the level of obsession. Tier 3 is having a casual crush, where you find the celebrity attractive but don't think about them much after consuming their content. Tier 2 is a deeper level of obsession, where you consume as much content as possible and think about the celebrity frequently. Tier 1 is the most intense level, where the thought of the celebrity consumes you entirely, and you may even experience maladaptive daydreaming or feel like you'll never find someone as attractive again. The speaker shared her personal experience of being deeply obsessed with Matthew Ray Gubler, to the point where she wrote fan fiction and felt like she couldn't meet him because of her intense feelings. She also mentioned having an idol-level obsession with Harry Styles, but it didn't consume her in the same way. Ultimately, the speaker met Matthew and shared her fan fiction with him, and the experience was surreal. This tiered approach to celebrity crushes offers a unique perspective on the intensity and impact of celebrity obsession.

    • Unexpected encounters can lead to meaningful connectionsUnexpected situations can result in surprising connections and new opportunities for meaningful interactions

Unexpected situations can lead to surprising connections. The speaker shared a story about attending a red carpet event and having to ask a celebrity, Matthew Gray Gubler, for help with a safety pin. Initially, the speaker was upset with her friend Connor for not introducing her to Gubler when they were all there. However, the encounter led to a meaningful interaction and a new appreciation for Gubler. The experience showed that sometimes the most unlikely encounters can result in meaningful connections. Additionally, the speaker's humorous recounting of the situation highlights the importance of being adaptable and resourceful in unexpected situations.

    • Meeting Idols: Unforgettable ExperiencesMeeting idols can lead to unforgettable experiences filled with excitement, nervousness, and unexpected turns. Following passions and dreams can lead to meaningful connections.

Meeting one's idols can be an unforgettable experience, full of excitement, nervousness, and sometimes even unexpected turns. The speaker shared her story of meeting her favorite actor, Matthew, and the chaos that ensued. Despite initial shyness and feeling like she was intruding, she was pleasantly surprised by Matthew's charisma and kindness. Another memorable encounter was with her favorite artist, Rosalia, whom she interviewed for TikTok. These experiences left the speaker feeling elated and deeply connected to her idols, reminding her of the power of following one's passions and dreams.

    • Celebrity crushes based on genuine appreciationThe speaker values celebrity crushes rooted in genuine admiration for the person's work, rather than their fame or image.

The speaker has never had a celebrity crush that reached the level of "tier 1," where they feel an overwhelming infatuation or connection. Instead, their crushes have been more casual and based on their appreciation for the person's work. The speaker also mentions their admiration for Will Ferrell, whom they consider to be a unique and refreshing celebrity. Additionally, the speaker expresses their ability to separate their admiration for celebrities from the need to post about it on social media, making their crushes more authentic and less transactional. The speaker also shares their surprise that Matthew McConaughey, who they attended college with, is not their number one celebrity crush. Overall, the speaker's perspective on celebrity crushes is that they are based on genuine appreciation for the person's work and talent, rather than just their fame or image.

    • Respect and shared experiences build strong bondsActing natural and valuing authenticity leads to genuine connections and respectful relationships with celebrities and others.

Respect and shared experiences form strong bonds between individuals, even among white men. The speakers, Connor and Matt, have met several celebrities and have developed friendships with them by acting natural and not forcing posed photos. They've coined the term "ethical clout chasers" to describe their approach, which values authenticity over exploitation. Matt shared a story about a time when he received harsh criticism on social media, and the experience reminded him of the importance of staying true to oneself and not letting negative comments affect self-worth. Overall, their conversation highlights the importance of genuine connections and respect in building meaningful relationships.

    • Engaging with Negative Comments: Setting Boundaries OnlineSetting boundaries online is crucial to avoid negative cycles and protect your online presence. Don't engage in back-and-forth interactions with hurtful comments, and instead focus on positive connections in your online community.

Engaging with negative comments online can lead to a vicious cycle of back-and-forth interaction, which can be frustrating and potentially harmful. The speaker in this conversation shared experiences of being targeted with hurtful comments, and her initial response was to engage and respond in kind. However, she eventually realized that this was enabling the negative behavior and leading to more of the same. The speaker also emphasized that her brand is self-deprecating, but that doesn't give others the right to demean her. She values her online presence and the connections she makes there, and would rather block and move on from negative interactions than engage in a back-and-forth that only serves to bring down the energy of her online community. The speaker also shared that she has had experiences of being "canceled" online, which can be a difficult and disheartening experience. Overall, the conversation highlights the importance of setting boundaries online and not engaging in negative interactions that don't serve a positive purpose.

    • Discussing Deepest FearsPeople have unique and varied fears, from encountering dead bodies to loneliness and sharks, highlighting the universality and relatability of fear.

Both individuals discussed their deepest fears, with the speaker expressing a fear of encountering a dead body and the interviewee expressing a fear of loneliness and never finding love. The speaker shared how they've never seen a dead body but have a fascination with the concept due to movies, while the interviewee has seen one but prefers not to dwell on the experience. The conversation also touched on various topics such as movies, fears, and personal experiences. The speaker mentioned their fear of death, specifically the unknown aspect of it, while the interviewee shared their fear of being alone and the fear of sharks as an example of a fear they could potentially control. The conversation highlighted the relatability and universality of fear, and how it can take various forms for different individuals.

    • Impact of unexpected roommatesApproach unwelcome guests with knowledge and caution to minimize impact on living spaces and wallets. Mistakes can lead to larger infestations or embarrassing situations.

Unexpected roommates, whether they're spiders or cockroaches, can significantly impact our living experiences. These unwelcome guests can instill fear and discomfort, and in some cases, lead to unintended consequences. For instance, killing a female cockroach can attract more males, leading to a larger infestation. It's essential to approach these situations with knowledge and caution to minimize the impact on our living spaces and our wallets. Another lesson learned is the importance of accuracy and attention to detail, as mistaking a bone name can lead to an embarrassing tattoo. Overall, these experiences serve as reminders of the unpredictability of life and the importance of staying adaptable and informed.

    • Embracing the unexpected moments of lifeAppreciate art, cherish human connections, and live in the moment to find meaning and joy in life's unpredictable moments

Life is full of unexpected moments that can bring about profound realizations. From appreciating art and observing human connections, to reflecting on mortality and cherishing friendships, these moments can leave a lasting impact. The speaker shares their personal experiences with tattoos, art, and human connections, emphasizing the importance of living in the moment and embracing the fragility and complexity of life. They also discuss the anxiety they feel about their unconventional lifestyle and the pressure to be productive, but ultimately find joy in their experiences and the connections they make. The speaker's conversation with Brooke highlights the importance of finding meaning and connection in the seemingly mundane and random moments of life.

    • Unexpected experiences and connections on social mediaSocial media can bring unexpected experiences and connections, both positive and negative. Embrace them as part of life and find humor in the unpleasant moments.

Social media can bring unexpected experiences and connections, both good and bad. The speaker, who went viral as "kombucha girl" in 2019, shared an experience of being recognized at a music festival and being subjected to unwanted attention. She also talked about some of the most horrific first date stories shared with her, involving incidents of deceit and humiliation. Despite the unpleasant experiences, the speaker emphasized the importance of embracing these moments as part of life and even finding humor in them. She also shared her own experience of recreating a viral moment from the past, which turned out to be a cute memory. Overall, the discussion highlights the power of social media to bring people together, but also the potential risks and challenges that come with it.

    • The Impact of First ImpressionsFirst impressions can be costly and shape our perceptions, so it's important to be authentic and considerate of others' experiences.

First impressions matter and can be costly. The speaker, Taryn, shares a story about a date with a man named Tom, who showed up with a diamond grill in his mouth. The unexpected accessory left a bad impression on Taryn, leading to an embarrassing experience when Tom asked for her help to retrieve it from the trash. The incident reinforces the importance of being authentic and considering the potential impact of one's actions on others. Additionally, the story highlights the challenges and potential awkwardness that can arise on dates, emphasizing the importance of being prepared and open-minded while also setting boundaries. Overall, the experience serves as a reminder that first impressions can shape our perceptions and experiences, and it's essential to be mindful of how we present ourselves to others.

    • The Power of First Impressions in DatingBe attuned to your intuition and set boundaries to ensure safety and comfort in dating. First impressions can significantly impact our feelings and perceptions of a potential partner.

First impressions can be crucial in various situations, especially when it comes to dating. The speaker shares an experience of a man who came to her house for a date and made her feel uncomfortable from the moment he entered through the front door. His presence alone made her feel uneasy, and the rest of the night only added to her discomfort. Despite her efforts to make him feel welcome by cooking dinner and sharing a bottle of wine, he showed little appreciation and even asked for more food and pizza later. The experience left her feeling annoyed and relieved when he eventually left early the next morning. This incident highlights the importance of being attuned to our intuition and setting boundaries to ensure our safety and comfort in any social interaction. Additionally, the small detail of him entering through the front door instead of the backdoor became a significant factor in her unease, emphasizing the power of first impressions.

    • Men exploiting women's kindnessMen can manipulate women into doing things against their will, disregarding their comfort and personal boundaries. Consent should always be mutual and respected.

Men can sometimes take advantage of women's kindness and hospitality, leaving them feeling violated and used. The story shared by Becca about being asked to push start a man's motorcycle at an ungodly hour highlights this issue. The man, without any regard for Becca's comfort or personal boundaries, manipulated her into helping him. This situation is a reminder that consent should always be mutual and respected, regardless of gender. Another interesting point discussed was the contrasting reactions to power dynamics in relationships. If the roles were reversed, the outcome might have been different. This brings up larger feminist theories about power dynamics and societal expectations. Lastly, Britney shared her hot take on having children, expressing her lack of interest in having kids. This sparked a conversation about changing societal attitudes towards having children and the pressures that come with it. Overall, the conversation touched upon important topics related to consent, power dynamics, and societal expectations.

    • Shifting societal norms around having childrenIt's increasingly accepted for people to choose not to have kids, contrasting with previous generations where not wanting children was met with backlash. Personal independence and individual choices are valued.

Societal norms around having children are shifting, and it's becoming more accepted for people to choose not to have kids. This contrasts with previous generations where not wanting children was met with more backlash. The conversation also touched on the pressure to conform to societal expectations around marriage and starting a family during college years. The speakers shared their personal experiences of growing up in different environments, with some feeling more pressure to conform to traditional norms than others. They emphasized the importance of valuing personal independence and individual choices. The conversation also highlighted the impact of generational differences on family dynamics and the changing pace of life.

If you have been on the fence about partnering with a life coach, this is the episode for you. What do you look for? What should you steer clear of? Will you be pressured to make a decision right away?

These are just some of the questions that I discuss with my friends, Danielle and Machele. Episode 21 The benefits of a digital detox

Episode 21 The benefits of a digital detox
Season 2, episode 21 : The benefits of a digital detox

If you have ever been curious about the real benefits of a digital detox - this episode is for you! As a busy solo-preneur, I’m rarely (if ever) without my phone. My business and connections are nurtured through technology and I’m able to support my clients better, and easier, thanks to the apps on my phone.

But in the past year or so, I’ve noticed some strange automatic habits that have developed around my phone - picking it up if I leave the room, opening apps and scrolling without realising I’m doing it, feeling heavy guilt if I don’t reply to an email or whats app within an hour or so. It wasn’t feeling good to have these habits, and so I took the opportunity of a recent trip to have 5 days off and away from my phone (emails, socials, messaging, calls).

To say it's been transformative is an understatement, and I’ve been blown away with the creative fire that's switched on again, after I created the space for it. This conversation is all about how I found the digital detox, what I put in place to set myself up for success with it, and what the benefits have been so far.

As always, my intention is for you to take what resonates with you, and leave what doesn’t.

Thank you for listening and please follow / subscribe to this podcast so you don’t miss an episode!

#15: Loving People Well with Angel

#15: Loving People Well with Angel

Have you ever felt like you had to change who you truly were in order to make others comfortable?

My friend Angel has. Angel is real, authentic, and a lovely friend who loves her well exactly as they are. Today, we are peeling back the layers of Angel’s story as she openly talks about her struggle with being vulnerable for the sake of sparing others.

Through her story, she shares how overcoming the desire to hold back actually leads to deeper connection. She also shares about the value of healthy boundaries, and how to love others right where they are. Regardless of your background or personality, my hope is that through Angel’s story, you will feel encouraged to be known for who you are and love others the same.

    Episode Highlights:

    • The impact that knowing who you are can have on your relationships.
    • The importance of viewing friendships as a gift.
    • Why being vulnerable allows others to feel they can be vulnerable too.
    • A little on Angel’s story and her Italian upbringing.
    • The value of healthy boundaries.
    • Choosing to love others.
