    Podcast Summary

    • Jay Shetty's journey from childhood struggles to becoming an empathetic influencer.Understanding our past experiences can shape our present actions and help us navigate challenges with empathy and self-reflection.

Jay Shetty's childhood experiences, particularly in mediating his parents' marriage issues, shaped his perspective on compassion, understanding, and the complexities of human behavior. He learned from a young age that people can mean well and try their best, but still face challenges and difficulties. This realization instilled in him a deep sense of empathy and a desire to help others navigate their own life struggles. Through his work as an influencer and content creator, Jay Shetty continues to embody the role he took on as a child, offering wisdom and guidance to those in need. Additionally, he emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and questioning the beliefs and patterns we may have adopted from our own upbringing. Ultimately, understanding and learning from our past can shape our present and future actions.

    • Increasing Self-Awareness to Break Subconscious PatternsReflecting on our conflicts and taking responsibility allows us to understand our role, address insecurities, and make better choices based on our own instincts.

Self-awareness is essential for recognizing and breaking patterns of subconscious behavior. We often adopt beliefs and habits from our childhood experiences, both positive and negative, without even realizing it. However, by reflecting on our conflicts, disagreements, and disconnects with others, we can begin to ask ourselves: what part of this am I responsible for? This may be an uncomfortable question, but it allows us to take ownership and understand our role in the situation. Additionally, identifying the skills and personal growth we may be lacking helps us address our own insecurities and work on self-validation. Lastly, by plotting the most difficult times in our lives and examining the decision-making process, we can identify patterns and make better choices based on our own instincts rather than seeking validation from others.

    • The Importance of Self-reflection and Being Present with Our ThoughtsTaking the time to reflect on our behavior and emotions through daily practices like journaling or self-talk can help us understand ourselves better and grow personally.

Self-reflection and being present with our thoughts is essential for personal growth. Jay Shetty emphasizes the importance of finding a daily practice to analyze our behavior and emotions. This can be done through activities like journaling, voice notes, or even talking to oneself while driving. By reflecting on both positive and negative experiences, we can understand the reasons behind our actions and make improvements. Jay also highlights the common fear of being alone with our thoughts, which stems from the association of loneliness with abandonment. However, he emphasizes that spending time alone and engaging in self-contemplation is crucial for understanding ourselves and achieving personal development.

    • Rethinking Solitude: Breaking Free from Societal ConditioningBeing alone doesn't equate to loneliness. Surround yourself with individuals who align with your values and aspirations to foster personal growth. Celebrate yourself, and unlearn societal beliefs that devalue self-worth.

Our society has conditioned us to believe that being alone means being lonely and abandoned, when in reality, being in solitude can be a beautiful thing. We have been led to believe that our self-worth is defined by the number of people around us, rather than the quality or depth of those relationships. From a biological perspective, being alone historically meant less attractiveness and increased danger. However, the social construct of equating solitude with isolation and separation has led to confusion. Spending time in solitude does not mean cutting off all human interaction, but rather being intentional about who we surround ourselves with. The 75% rule emphasizes the importance of surrounding ourselves with people who have good values and similar ambitions, as they can have a profound impact on our personal growth. Ultimately, we need to unlearn the societal conditioning that has made us believe that celebrating ourselves is not enough.

    • Embracing Diversity and Appreciating Individual Contributions in Relationships.Relationships thrive when we recognize and value the unique qualities that each person brings, understanding that no one can fulfill all our needs, and instead cherishing the care, competence, consistency, and character they offer.

Relationships are multifaceted, and it's important to appreciate and value the unique qualities and contributions that each person brings into our lives. No one person can fulfill all our needs and expectations, but we can find fulfillment by recognizing and cherishing the specific characteristics that individuals possess. Care, competence, consistency, and character are the four pillars that make relationships meaningful. While some people may excel in one or two of these qualities, it's rare to find someone who possesses all four. We shouldn't overlook or criticize others for lacking certain qualities, but instead, appreciate them for exactly what they bring to our lives. Our relationships can teach us more about ourselves and life than we may realize, and it's essential to embrace the diversity and lessons that each person offers.

    • The True Meaning of Love and ValidationLove should not be based on external achievements or validation, but on accepting and appreciating our partners for who they truly are.

True love goes beyond external achievements and validation. Jay Shetty reflects on how he used to seek validation from his wife for his success and accomplishments. However, he realized that his wife's love for him was unconditional and not dependent on his achievements. This made him appreciate the deeper meaning of love, where one is valued for who they are beyond their appearance, ambitions, and goals. Additionally, Jay Shetty's girlfriend also exhibits similar values, emphasizing the importance of understanding and appreciating what truly matters to our partners. Society often places importance on external factors of success, but this conversation highlights the significance of valuing and supporting our partners for their true essence and values.

    • Trusting Our Instincts and Living AuthenticallyEmbrace your inner voice, ignore societal norms, and follow your true desires. Personal growth and fulfillment come from living authentically, not conforming to others' expectations.

Listening to our inner voice and following our true desires can lead to a fulfilling and authentic life. Jay Shetty and his guest discuss the importance of trusting our instincts and not being swayed by societal norms or others' opinions. They emphasize that we all have an inner voice that guides us, but it often gets suppressed due to external pressures and expectations. By reconnecting with that voice and embracing our unique interests and passions, we can create a meaningful and balanced life. They challenge the notion that certain pursuits or identities are contradictory, highlighting that personal growth and fulfillment can come from diverse experiences. Ultimately, living true to ourselves is more important than conforming to others' expectations.

    • Breaking Free from Labels and Embracing True PotentialSociety's labels limit growth and exploration. Embracing our true selves and engaging in open dialogue is essential for progress in relationships and society. True progress lies in embracing internal motivations and values.

Society tends to label and box people based on certain roles or expectations, limiting their potential for growth and exploration. Jay Shetty and the speaker discuss how these labels can lead to judgment and the perception of contradiction when individuals step outside of the assigned roles. They emphasize the need for individuals to break free from these labels and embrace their true selves, their purpose, and their passions. Additionally, the conversation highlights the importance of meeting in the middle and engaging in open dialogue to make progress in relationships and society as a whole. True progress can only be achieved when we move beyond external appearances and embrace the internal motivations and values that drive us.

    • Embracing Contrasts for Personal Growth and Societal ProgressFinding common ground between spirituality and the business world can lead to a more well-rounded approach to life, and by simplifying complex ideas and focusing on practicality, we can make meaningful changes and benefit others.

Finding a balance between contrasting ideas and practices is crucial for personal growth and societal progress. Both spirituality and the business world have valuable lessons to offer, and embracing aspects from both can lead to a more holistic approach to life. The concept of the "middle path," emphasized by figures like the Buddha and Martin Luther King Jr., highlights the importance of seeking connections and common ground. In the context of meditation, there are three types mentioned: breath work, visualization, and mantra. Each type serves a specific purpose, whether it's calming physical stress or visualizing the process rather than fixating on results. By simplifying complex ideas and focusing on practicality, we can make meaningful changes in our lives and benefit others as well.

    • Exploring the Power of Meditation for Self-Discovery and ConnectionMeditation is a versatile practice that helps us understand ourselves better, reduces stress, and is accessible to everyone. Use the right techniques and tools for a deeper connection with your body, mind, and heart.

Meditation is a powerful tool for building a relationship with yourself. It involves various techniques such as breath work, visualization, mantra, and sound. Sound, in particular, has the ability to transport and connect us in unique ways, awakening different parts of ourselves depending on the level it's at. By practicing meditation, we deepen our understanding of our body, mind, heart, and consciousness. It's like getting to know ourselves better, just as we would with a partner or loved one. Additionally, using the right meditation tool for specific situations can help bring alignment between our body and mind, reducing stress and tension. Meditation doesn't have to be exclusive or intimidating; it can be accessible and beneficial for people from all walks of life.

    • The Power of Breath and MeditationIncorporating daily meditation and focusing on our breath can improve our well-being, help navigate emotions, enhance sleep and energy levels, and reduce stress.

Incorporating meditation and focusing on our breath is a simple but powerful first step in adding value to our lives. By setting aside just a few minutes each day for self-reflection and relaxation, we can prioritize our well-being and gain clarity in our thoughts. Our breath is intimately connected to our emotions, so by learning to control and train our breath, we can better navigate our emotions and experiences. Breathing exercises can also help us sleep better, increase our energy levels, and reduce feelings of rush and stress. Approaching these practices with an open mind and understanding the science behind them can help us overcome skepticism and embrace their practical benefits.

    • Confronting Fear for Personal GrowthBy approaching fear with curiosity and exploration, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and navigate through fear to achieve meaningful breakthroughs in life.

Fear can either control us or serve as a signal for what is important. Instead of allowing fear to consume us and dictate our actions, we should approach it with curiosity and inspection. Just as we would investigate a fire alarm to ensure our safety, we should explore our fears to understand their root causes and determine their validity. By breaking down our fears and examining them, we can find healthy ways to navigate through them and make significant breakthroughs in life. Living our lives based on the fear of what others may say, think, or do is a sure way to have regrets in the end. It is important to confront fear and not let it imprison us in inaction.

    • Approaching Others with Compassion and UnderstandingMeet people with compassion, acknowledge fear of change, shift perspective, and find growth in unexpected places. Everyone faces insecurities and lessons, regardless of success or followers.

It's important to approach others with compassion and understanding rather than judgment. Jay Shetty emphasizes that he tries to meet everyone with compassion because he knows what it feels like to be judged. By acknowledging the fear and potential backlash that may come from making changes in our lives, we can better navigate these decisions. Shetty encourages us to consider how we will feel in 5 to 10 years if we don't make any changes, and if it feels worse, it may be worth taking the risk. Additionally, he highlights the importance of shifting our perspective and mindset rather than constantly seeking external changes. It's a reminder that growth and wisdom can be found in unexpected places and situations. Insecurities and lessons are a part of everyone's journey, regardless of the number of followers or perceived success.

    • Embracing Self-Reliance and Prioritizing Self-CareTake responsibility for your own life, prioritize self-care, and focus on personal purpose rather than striving for a perfect work-life balance.

Individuals need to take responsibility for their own lives and not rely on others to change or improve their circumstances. Jay Shetty emphasizes the importance of self-reliance and the dangers of imposing personal biases and beliefs onto others. He acknowledges his own struggle with expecting everyone to follow his path to success and happiness, realizing that each person has their own unique journey. Additionally, the conversation highlights the significance of prioritizing self-care and taking time for oneself. Jay shares his experience of delaying his own self-care and emphasizes the importance of not letting it reach a breaking point. Ultimately, the key takeaway is to focus on personal purpose, being passionate about one's goals and values, rather than striving for a perfect work-life balance.

    • The Importance of Self-Awareness and Personal GrowthRecognizing our imperfections and striving for personal growth through self-reflection and learning from our experiences is vital for becoming a better version of ourselves and improving our interactions with others.

Self-awareness and striving for personal growth are essential in becoming a better version of ourselves each day. Both individuals in the conversation, Jay Shetty and the other person, acknowledge their imperfections and understand the importance of recognizing their faults. They reflect on their behaviors and actions towards others, realizing that their high expectations for efficiency and speed can sometimes lead to frustration, affecting their interactions with people. They both value human connection and emphasize the significance of treating others with compassion and respect. Through self-reflection and learning from their experiences, they strive to improve themselves daily. This conversation highlights the need for self-awareness, humility, and the commitment to continuous personal development.

    • Embracing Authenticity and the Power of PerspectiveBeing genuine and embracing our flaws allows us to connect with others on a deeper level, making a meaningful impact that unrealistic ideals cannot achieve.

Both Jay Shetty and the speaker believe in the importance of being authentic and genuine. They recognize that nobody is perfect and that pretending to be flawless only creates undue pressure and disappointments. They emphasize the importance of acknowledging one's flaws and embracing humanity rather than striving for impossible ideals. Furthermore, they highlight the power of different perspectives and voices in making a meaningful impact on others. They both understand that their words may not resonate with everyone, but by sharing their unique experiences and insights, they can connect with individuals in a way that others cannot. Ultimately, the key takeaway is that being sincere and true to oneself is more valuable than attempting to change someone's life or living up to unrealistic expectations.

    • The four steps to creating changeTransformation occurs when an idea becomes meaningful, is put into practice, and is applied in daily life. Happiness comes from personal growth and using one's passion to benefit others.

Creating change in someone's life involves four steps: theoretical, meaningful, practical, and applicable. Merely agreeing with an idea theoretically is not enough to bring about transformation. It is when the idea becomes meaningful and hits the heart that change can start to happen. However, even that alone does not change one's actions or behavior. The next step is to make the idea practical by reflecting on how to incorporate it into daily life. Finally, the key is to actually apply and take action on the idea. Happiness, according to Jay Shetty, comes from daily habits that promote personal growth, as well as finding and using one's passion in the service of others. When what makes you happy also benefits others, it creates a deeper sense of fulfillment and joy.

    • Finding your flow state for happinessContinually improve skills, broaden challenges, and create balance between learning, launching, and loving to achieve happiness on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

Finding your flow state is crucial for happiness. Being in flow means that your skills and challenges are balanced. If your skills are higher than your challenge, you'll feel bored and stuck. On the other hand, if your challenge is greater than your skills, you'll feel overwhelmed and disconnected. Most people live in one of these discrepancies, which hinders their happiness. Therefore, it is important to continually improve your skills and broaden your challenges. This can be achieved by learning something new every year, launching something new every year, and loving something every year. By creating a balance between learning, launching, and loving, you can create happiness on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

    • Bringing Mindfulness to the Masses: Jay Shetty's Partnership with CalmJay Shetty aims to make meditation accessible by encouraging people to practice it daily for just 7 minutes, leading to inner peace and inspiration in their lives.

Jay Shetty partnered with Calm, the mindfulness meditation app, because he saw the genuine and sincere vision of the co-founder, Michael. Jay Shetty desired to share meditation at scale with the world and make it accessible and relevant to everyone's daily life. He believed that meditation is a habit practiced by the world's most healthy, wealthy, and successful individuals. During the pandemic, Jay Shetty taught meditation live on Instagram and received overwhelming feedback from people who had never meditated before. Their desire to continue meditating with him every day inspired Jay Shetty to create a home for daily meditation insights. The goal is to help every person build a daily habit of meditating for 7 minutes, 5 days a week, in order to find inner peace and take inspired actions in their lives.

    • The Importance of Support and Mentoring in SuccessSurrounding oneself with supportive individuals and seeking guidance from mentors is crucial for personal and professional growth. Acknowledging the influence of others and investing in self-improvement can lead to success.

Success is not solely attributed to individual effort, but rather to the influence and support of others. Jay Shetty acknowledges the pivotal role that mentors and thought leaders played in transforming his life and giving him the confidence and self-awareness he possesses today. He expresses deep gratitude for those who saw potential in him when he couldn't see it himself, emphasizing that their belief and encouragement propelled him towards success. Furthermore, Jay also touches on the practical aspect of his success, recognizing the impact of his parents' decision to enrol him in public speaking and drama school. This exchange highlights the importance of surrounding oneself with supportive individuals who recognize and nurture potential, and the power of personal development and self-improvement in achieving professional growth.

    • Developing Effective Communication Skills Through Practice and LearningContinuous learning and self-development are crucial in becoming a successful communicator. Positive thinking, being open-minded, and honing communication skills through practice can lead to success.

The ability to communicate effectively is a valuable skill that can be developed through dedicated practice. Jay Shetty shares his experience of attending public speaking school for 7 years, which involved rigorous examinations and impromptu speeches. This allowed him to hone his communication skills and understand ideas better. Additionally, his time as a monk provided him with the opportunity to study ancient scriptures, engage in philosophical analysis, and gain deep insights into life's truths. These experiences, coupled with the mentorship of Thomas Power at Accenture, helped Jay break through his limiting beliefs and adopt a growth mindset. Through the teachings of Napoleon Hill and the concept of ORS (open, random, and supportive), he learned the importance of positive thinking and being open-minded in order to succeed. Ultimately, this conversation emphasizes the significance of continuous learning and self-development in becoming a successful communicator.

    • The Power of an Open Mindset for Personal Growth and SuccessEmbrace an open mindset to expand your horizons, challenge your fears, and seek new opportunities. Remember to persist and dedicate yourself to your passions, build expertise offline, and view all experiences as valuable stepping stones.

Mindset plays a crucial role in personal growth and success. Living with an open, random, and supportive mindset allows for expansion and the exploration of new opportunities. It encourages stepping out of comfort zones, challenging fears, and engaging with others. The conversation highlights the importance of persistence and dedication to one's passions, even when there are no immediate rewards or recognition. Building expertise and honing skills offline before transitioning to an online platform is emphasized as a significant factor in long-term success. Additionally, it is essential to shift our mindset and view experiences as building blocks that contribute to our overall journey, rather than labeling them as a waste of time.

    • Embracing Rejection for GrowthTaking risks and embracing rejection can lead to personal and professional growth by viewing each rejection as a learning experience and approaching life as an addition rather than a subtraction.

Taking risks and embracing rejection can lead to personal and professional growth. Jay Shetty's experience as a 16-year-old intern taught him the importance of picking up the phone and reaching out to others, regardless of potential rejection. He explains that mindset of not worrying about losing anything if someone says no, because there are always other opportunities. By approaching life as an addition rather than a subtraction, and viewing each rejection as a learning experience, one can develop resilience and confidence. This mindset allows for personal growth and a greater sense of purpose. Additionally, the conversation emphasizes the importance of intentional decision-making, focusing on self-perception, career choices, relationships, and serving others to define true success.

    • The Power of HumilityHumility is a key quality for success and creating meaningful connections, regardless of achievements. Embracing humility attracts opportunities for growth and collaboration.

Humility is one of the most admirable qualities in a person. Both Jay Shetty and the podcast host express their appreciation for each other's humility and down-to-earth nature. The host, despite his age and achievements, is described as always being humble and approachable. This resonates with Jay Shetty, who explains that in his monk training, humility was considered the highest quality a person could possess. They both highlight how humility has played a significant role in their success and ability to serve and connect with others. Their conversation shows the importance of staying humble, regardless of accomplishments, and how it can attract genuine connections and create opportunities for collaboration and growth.

Moment 172: 5 Body Language Rules To Read Anyone INSTANTLY!: Robert Greene
In this moment with best-selling author and world renowned thinker Robert Greene, he discusses the importance of body language and nonverbal communication. Robert says this form of communication is one that you cannot lie about, as we have a deeply rooted human and emotional response to it. Body language isn’t just one subtle gesture, but hundreds of different small signs, from a look, a gesture, to the complete vibe a person gives off. Even when people try to fake their body language, a good observer can always tell, from someone looking you in the eye but with their mind elsewhere, a tone of voice that reveals a persons lack of confidence, to a fake smile that is proven false compared to a genuine smile. Sometimes the clearest reveal is the micro expression someone unwillingly shows in the fraction of a second before they put on the act of who they want to appear to be. Moment 171: STOP DOING THIS! It's Ruining Your Sex Life

Moment 171: STOP DOING THIS! It's Ruining Your Sex Life
In this moment, world-renowned philosopher and thinker Alain De Botton discusses how communication can lead to a better sex life. Alain says sex is like a mirror to the relationship as a whole. If something is wrong with a couples sex life, it’s usually a symptom of a wider problem. He says that a first step towards a more fulfilling sex life is reflecting on how you are as a partner. Being open about yourself in a relationship is the best way to create mutual trust, which means that you can ‘tease’ out any issue in a relationship. This then leads to being open with one another sexually. Moment 170: The Scientific Method For Unstoppable Confidence: Professor Steve Peters

Moment 170: The Scientific Method For Unstoppable Confidence: Professor Steve Peters
In this moment, elite sport psychologist, Professor Steve Peters discusses the way to overcome low self-esteem. Often low self-esteem manifests itself outwardly in abusive relationships, the wrong career, and impulsive behaviours. Dr Peters says these are ‘maladaptive coping strategies’, where you are punishing yourself, thinking that you don’t deserve to treat yourself well, as you believe that you fundamentally don’t deserve happiness. Dr Peters says the solution can be as simple as getting a blank piece of paper and writing down who you want to be, and what behaviours you want to have. He says that this exercise works, as once you remove the interference of your mind, this person you hope to become is actually you, as you are defining yourself. Moment 169: CIA Spy Reveals How To AVOID Media Manipulation & Brainwashing: Andrew Bustamante

Moment 169: CIA Spy Reveals How To AVOID Media Manipulation & Brainwashing: Andrew Bustamante
In this moment, the former CIA intelligence officer Andrew Bustamante discusses the crucial techniques of manipulation, which he describes as a core part of CIA training. Andrew  introduces the R.I.C.E. analogy, which stands for Reward, Ideology, Coercion, and Ego. This framework is essential for understanding the motivations of others, allowing you to connect with them, build relationships, and influence their actions. According to Andrew, reward involves anything the other person desires, while ideology reflects the person’s core beliefs and is the most powerful element of the acronym. Coercion involves using negative behaviours on someone such as guilt or blackmail, and ego relates to how the other person sees themselves. Andrew translates this manipulation technique to marketing. He suggests that by sending targeted messages to your audience and assessing their responses, you gain insights into their ideology, providing you with useful information for future sales. #131 - Advice to my younger self

#131 - Advice to my younger self

With a lot of personal growth that’s been happening over the past couple of months, I’ve had a lot of understandings and insights surrounding myself that I felt I wanted to share with my past-self. And with you.

I’ve done an episode giving myself advice before, in December 2021 (Ep. 20). A lot has changed since then and at the same time, I feel like I’m getting closer to a version of me I used to be.

This episode is full of personal talk, emotional support, important reminders and proof that we are in this together. We’re all doing life together and I know that much of this episode will speak to you very directly (and kindly).
