E18: Chris 'Drama' Pfaff - Dealing with Fame, Anxiety and Addiction

    enJune 04, 2018

    Podcast Summary

    • From Akron to LA: Overcoming Adversity to Succeed in SkateboardingDetermination and perseverance can lead to success despite adversity. Stay focused on your goals and build relationships to find opportunities.

Determination and perseverance, even in the face of adversity, can lead to success. Chris, a seasoned entrepreneur, shared his personal journey of growing up in Akron, Ohio, falling in love with skateboarding, and moving to Los Angeles at 18 to pursue a career in the industry. However, a head injury derailed his plans, but he didn't give up. Instead, he arrived in LA with $2,500 and a strong desire to make something happen. He ended up becoming a personal assistant for his cousin, a pro skateboarder, and eventually found his place in the industry. This story highlights the importance of staying focused on your goals, even when things don't go as planned, and the power of networking and building relationships.

    • Unexpected job leads to unexpected opportunitiesSeizing opportunities and being adaptable can lead to business growth, even when they don't initially align with one's goals.

Starting out in an unexpected job can lead to unexpected opportunities. The speaker began as a personal assistant to a pro skateboarder, not knowing what the role entailed. However, when the opportunity arose for a reality show on MTV, he stayed on board and ended up gaining some fame. Despite not wanting to be a reality TV star, he saw the potential for business growth and eventually started his own clothing line, Young and Reckless, during the filming of another MTV show. This experience demonstrates the importance of seizing opportunities and being adaptable, even when they don't initially align with one's goals.

    • Seizing opportunities and defying the status quoDiddy's journey from reality TV to entrepreneurship inspires young people to pursue their dreams and live their best lives, showing that entrepreneurship is a mindset that can be cultivated.

Entrepreneurship is about seizing opportunities and defying the status quo. Young and Reckless, the clothing line founded by Sean "Diddy" Combs during his reality TV show tenure, is a testament to this principle. Diddy saw a gap in the market and used his platform to create a brand that resonated with young people, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and live their best lives. He believes that entrepreneurship is not limited to those born with a special set of gifts, but rather, it's a mindset that can be cultivated and developed. Diddy's journey from trying to find ways to avoid normal jobs to becoming a successful entrepreneur was fueled by his dislike for conformity and his desire to be in control of his own life. The clothing line's mission reflects this ethos, inspiring young people to break free from societal expectations and create their own paths.

    • Entrepreneurship: Freedom with ResponsibilityEntrepreneurship offers freedom and ownership, but also immense pressure and responsibility. Successes and failures are a reflection of one's choices.

Entrepreneurship offers a unique sense of freedom and ownership over one's progress and failures, unlike traditional employment where one may have multiple bosses and strict rules to follow. Entrepreneurs have the power to make their own decisions and live or die by the consequences, creating a deeper connection to their lives. However, this freedom comes with immense pressure and responsibility, as problems and challenges are always present and demand immediate attention. Despite the stress and sacrifices, entrepreneurs often find fulfillment in the knowledge that their successes and failures are a reflection of their own choices.

    • From DVD sales to entrepreneurship: anyone can start a businessDetermination, resilience, and a willingness to learn are key qualities for entrepreneurs. Starting a business requires action, not just inspiration.

Anyone can be an entrepreneur with determination, resilience, and a willingness to learn. The speaker shares his personal experience of starting a business at a young age by filming and selling DVDs of little league football games. He believes that the definition of an entrepreneur has changed with technology and the ability to work remotely. While not everyone may have the drive to start a business, those who truly want it can do so. The speaker emphasizes that people can develop the necessary qualities to become entrepreneurs, such as resilience and the ability to deal with adversity. He encourages those who are inspired by the entrepreneur lifestyle to take action and start their own businesses. However, he acknowledges that there are also many people who enjoy the idea of entrepreneurship but never take action.

    • Recognizing the potential in every individualAnyone can become an entrepreneur with dedication, humility, and a willingness to learn and put in intense effort, despite current circumstances or abilities.

Anyone has the potential to become an entrepreneur, regardless of their current abilities or circumstances. However, the journey requires constant learning, humility, and a willingness to put in intense effort. The speaker shares an experience of encountering a fan who struggled to communicate effectively but had a business idea. Despite the man's challenges, the speaker recognizes that with the right guidance and resources, he could have succeeded. The speaker criticizes the current education system for not fostering the necessary traits for entrepreneurship and expresses concern about the influx of dreamers who believe they can become entrepreneurs simply by consuming online content. Ultimately, the speaker emphasizes the importance of genuine dedication and hard work in achieving entrepreneurial success.

    • Inspiring the next generation of entrepreneursInstead of dismissing unprofessional messages, create educational resources or mentoring opportunities to help young entrepreneurs learn effective communication skills.

As an entrepreneur, putting yourself out there will inevitably lead to an influx of business ideas and requests for help from strangers. While it can be frustrating to receive generic or unprofessional messages, it's important to remember that there are young people out there who are inspired by your success and seeking guidance. Instead of dismissing them, consider creating educational resources or mentoring opportunities to help them learn how to effectively reach out and present their ideas. By doing so, you're not only inspiring and educating the next generation of entrepreneurs, but also setting them up for success.

    • Navigating Misunderstandings in EntrepreneurshipEntrepreneurship involves challenges and misunderstandings, but with the right guidance and support, these can be overcome. Avoid unrealistic expectations from media and remember that behind the scenes, there are struggles.

The world can be full of misunderstandings and misconceptions, especially when it comes to entrepreneurship and interacting with others. A simple request for help can sometimes be perceived as a scam, leading to frustration and misunderstanding. However, the goal should be to educate and teach people the right way to navigate these situations. The glamorization of entrepreneurship in media can create unrealistic expectations, and it's important to remember that behind the scenes, there are struggles and challenges that aren't always shown. Personal experiences, such as moving to a new place or the end of a long-term project, can be tough and lead to anxiety and feelings of being lost. But with the right guidance and support, these challenges can be overcome. The goal is to create a world where everyone can experience the joy and success that comes from entrepreneurship.

    • The emotional toll of entrepreneurshipEntrepreneurship involves resilience, seeking support, and finding healthy coping mechanisms during challenging times.

Running a business can be incredibly challenging, especially during times of market shifts and personal hardships. The speaker shares his experience of leaving a successful retail career and feeling lost and worthless when the industry collapsed, leading him to cope with the pain through excessive drinking. He also reflects on his co-founder's similar experience during their early business days. The untold stories of entrepreneurship often include the emotional toll of balancing business pressures with personal ones. These experiences highlight the importance of resilience, seeking support, and finding healthy coping mechanisms during difficult times.

    • Learning from tough business experiencesTaking the first step towards making positive changes, no matter how small, can lead to a chain reaction of progress. Seek recommendations and read books for personal growth during challenging times.

Going through tough business experiences, even if it involves letting go of friends or making difficult decisions, can provide valuable lessons and a stronger foundation for running a business. The speaker learned this firsthand when he had to let go of friends during a rough period for his apparel business. He emphasizes that taking the first step towards making positive changes, no matter how small, can lead to a chain reaction of progress. The speaker also shares how a simple recommendation from friends led him to read a book that helped him manage anxiety and stress, ultimately improving his overall well-being. So, if you're facing challenges, don't get bogged down by the size of the problem or the perceived insurmountability of it. Instead, take the first step and let the momentum build.

    • Personal growth through curiosity and experimentationCuriosity about meditation led to transformative habits and shifting priorities, with material possessions giving way to adding value to the world

Personal growth and exploration can lead to unexpected discoveries and shifts in perspective. The speaker shared how his curiosity about meditation led him to experiment with various practices and habits, ultimately transforming his daily routine and motivations. He also reflected on how his goals and priorities have evolved over time, from a focus on material possessions to a desire to add value to the world. Money, once a primary motivator, now serves as a tool to amplify positive intentions. The journey of self-discovery is full of twists and turns, but embracing new experiences and being open to change can lead to profound personal growth.

    • Balancing work and personal life for entrepreneurial happinessEntrepreneurs should prioritize self-improvement and relationships for a balanced, fulfilling life, not just hard work and sacrifice.

While money can bring happiness by enabling us to fulfill our goals and make a positive impact, it's important for entrepreneurs to prioritize building a sustainable life outside of work. The false assumption that hard work and sacrifice are the keys to success can lead to neglecting relationships and personal happiness. Instead, focusing on continuous self-improvement and maintaining strong connections with friends and family can lead to a more fulfilling and balanced life. Ultimately, the drive to figure out how to do things better, both personally and professionally, can bring greater happiness than any amount of wealth.

    • Balancing relationships and entrepreneurshipIntentional effort and communication are crucial for maintaining relationships. Schedule time and be open about commitments to make it work.

Prioritizing relationships, whether it's with family or a significant other, requires intentional effort and communication. The speaker shares his experience of balancing a busy entrepreneurial life with maintaining connections with his loved ones, emphasizing the importance of scheduling time for them and being open about work commitments. He also discusses the challenges of dating as an ambitious entrepreneur, but finds success in being authentic and attracting like-minded partners. This perspective underscores the idea that small progress every day leads to significant improvements in personal and professional life.

    • Navigating Independence and Dependence in RelationshipsIndependent individuals crave both autonomy and affection in relationships, requiring balance and mutual respect to succeed.

Independence and dependence can be challenging in relationships, especially for naturally independent individuals. The speaker shares his personal experience of growing up with parents who were constantly at odds and his resulting fear of relationships due to the chaos and stress they brought. He believes that as an independent person, he wants his girlfriend to be so focused on her own life that she doesn't even notice if he misses a date. However, he also craves affection and attention when he has the time for it. The speaker acknowledges that finding a balance between these two desires is a difficult but necessary aspect of a successful relationship for entrepreneurs. Additionally, he emphasizes the importance of understanding, trust, and mutual respect in a relationship, as jealousy and suspicion can be detrimental. Ultimately, the speaker is on a journey to find the perfect balance and encourages others to reflect on their own relationship dynamics and desires.

    • Reflecting on Life and RegretsThe interviewee reflects on his life experiences, acknowledges past regrets, and takes steps to make amends, emphasizing the importance of self-reflection and personal growth.

The interviewee is content with his life experiences and successes, but not ready to retire. He regrets not spending enough time with his family and is taking steps to rectify that. However, he feels uncomfortable with the idea of being credited for changing people's lives through his podcast, as he feels he hasn't reached that level yet. The interviewee also expressed disappointment over someone, Jake Paul, copying his design for merchandise. Despite this, he maintains a positive attitude and continues to strive for improvement in his personal and professional life. The discussion highlights the importance of self-reflection and making amends for past regrets, as well as the humility to acknowledge one's limitations and continue to grow.

    • Dinner party guests and advice for young ChrisRespect others' work and property, avoid copyright infringements, learn from inspiring figures, and ask questions to prepare for the future.

While supporting and encouraging the success of others is important, it's equally crucial to uphold fundamental values and respect the work and property of others. The Paul brothers, who have made a name for themselves, sometimes operate at the expense of others, which is not a good example to set. When it comes to business, it's essential to be aware of copyright infringements and give proper credit where it's due. During a hypothetical dinner party with anyone who's ever lived, inspiring figures like Barack Obama, Tupac, Oprah, and Steve Jobs would be invited for their ability to overcome adversity and pioneer uncharted territory. To young Chris, the advice would be to spend more time learning and asking questions to prepare for the future.

    • Focus on learning over showing offEmbrace intake over output, be receptive and curious, and share authentic stories to inspire and learn from others

It's important to focus on learning and absorbing knowledge rather than constantly trying to showcase ourselves. The interviewee emphasized the value of intake over output, encouraging listeners to be receptive and curious, and assuring them that there will be ample opportunities to shine later. The interviewee also highlighted the importance of authentic storytelling and the value of sharing the raw, unfiltered experiences that shape who we are. The interviewee's podcast, "A Short Story Long," is a platform for sharing these stories and inspiring others, and it has become a source of motivation and learning for the interviewee himself. The podcast, which began just two years ago, has already reached a significant milestone of 100 episodes, and the interviewee is committed to delivering information in a more effective way and continuing to learn and grow. 10 (Weird) Signs You're an Entrepreneur [Business, mindset, entrepreneur, disruptors]

“You ARE an entrepreneur. Don’t let other people tell you otherwise.”

In this episode of The Disruptors Podcast, Rob Moore shares the 10 signs that make you an entrepreneur. You may not be aware that you have these characteristics, weird or not, which you can harness then to be the best you can be. Rob has seen them on himself and shares his experiences to get the most out of its upsides.

Discover why, when feeling overwhelmed, you must push yourself otherwise as you will never grow as an entrepreneur. Rob also advises that you take the opportunity and the risk to succeed, not beat yourself up, push through your comfort zone, and embrace sales & marketing.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • You’re always overwhelmed. Most successful entrepreneurs are pushing beyond their limits and getting out of their comfort zones. The tasks and activities they do are brimming over of what they’ve set to achieve.
    • You see opportunity in everything and you can’t help it. The upside and downside are everything you see is money-making. Explore outside your industry and learn what could be a successful business venture.
    • You feel alone sometimes. People around might seem a bit off that you don’t go for the normal 9-5 job. They’ve got opinions on how you do things. And, that’s alright. You just have to remember to reach out to your team, your mentors, and your colleagues.
    • You sometimes think it’s a thankless task to be an entrepreneur. There are times that we think that we’ve done a lot for other people and we don’t get the credit we deserve. Learn to tell yourself every day that you have and can give the most value. Be grateful for what you do and what impact you’ve given to others.
    • You beat yourself up. Sometimes, you compare yourself to others and nothing you do seems to be enough. You’re unique and you’re enough. Take joy in small successes. Learn to leverage your fears and doubts to step up.
    • You feel you’re destined for greatness. Rob: “I can’t tell you specifically in words or vision what it is I feel like that is special or unique or great about me but I have a feeling inside that I’m destined for more than what I’m doing. I’m supposed to be bigger, contribute more, and grow more than I am.”
    • You know you need to and you want to serve others equally, as well as meeting your self-interest. You can indulge yourself with what you want for yourself – the education, the material needs, etc. – but you have to do something valuable for the society. Help and try to give back.
    • You embrace sales and marketing. Rob: “Nothing moves until you sell something.”
    • You hate being told what to do. If you’re like Rob who sees himself as a contrarian, he advises that you have to relearn to give instructions and maintain a good relationship with your team.
    • You embrace risk. Get yourself out of your comfort zone to get more opportunities. Don’t be afraid to explore, fail and go beyond what you could do.

    BEST MOMENTS

    • “If you’re not taking more than you can handle, you’re not growing.”
    • “A lot of people think that what they’re going through, they’re going through alone. But what you’re going through as an entrepreneur, every entrepreneur is going through. It’s completely normal.”
    • “Every time you beat yourself down, have the courtesy to lift yourself up too.”
    • “The ideal balance of self-worth and net worth is that border between selflessness and selfishness.”
