Elizabeth Day - The Universe is Unfolding Exactly as Intended

    en-usDecember 02, 2020

    Podcast Summary

    • Embracing Failure for GrowthFailure is an opportunity for learning and growth, not something to be ashamed of. Embrace it and turn it into a source of wisdom and inspiration.

Key takeaway from this conversation between Moe Gaudet and Elizabeth Day is the transformative power of failure. Elizabeth, a successful novelist and journalist, turned her own experiences of failure into a movement and a podcast, "How to Fail," which became an international sensation. She encourages people to embrace failure as an opportunity for learning and growth, rather than something to be ashamed of. Elizabeth's first nonfiction book, "How to Fail," was a bestseller, and her latest, "Phailosophy," is a must-read. Despite her success, Elizabeth finds irony in the fact that she is admired and loved for her insights on failure. The conversation took place on Instagram live, and Elizabeth shared her recent decision to leave Canada and move to Dubai due to the cold weather. They discussed the current lockdown situation in London and Elizabeth's fond memories of her time there. Moe expressed her admiration for Elizabeth and her wisdom, and the conversation touched on the importance of learning from failures and finding optimism in challenging times.

    • Making people open up through empathy and shared experiencesElizabeth Day's ability to connect with interviewees through empathy and her belief in their inherent goodness allows them to share vulnerabilities, leading to profound conversations and personal growth for both parties.

Elizabeth Day's ability to make people open up and share their vulnerabilities during interviews comes from her own experiences of feeling like an outsider and being attuned to unspoken emotions. Her empathetic approach, combined with her belief in people's inherent goodness, creates a safe space for them to share their failures and struggles. This connection has led to profound conversations and has changed the lives of many interviewees, including Day herself. Her experiences have shaped her into a skilled interviewer who can draw out deep emotions and insights, making her podcast, "How to Fail," a source of inspiration and connection for its listeners.

    • Embracing Failure for Personal GrowthSuccess and failure are interconnected, and both teach valuable lessons for personal growth. Embrace failures as opportunities to learn and grow, rather than setbacks.

Success and failure are interconnected, and both are essential for personal growth. The speaker, a successful journalist and author, acknowledges the irony of discussing failure while being successful. However, she emphasizes that personal hardships, such as relationship issues, divorce, and infertility, have taught her valuable lessons and helped her become her authentic self. For her, success is not about material possessions or accolades, but rather about being true to herself. She defines failure as when something doesn't go according to plan and encourages questioning the source of the plan. The speaker also acknowledges that some failures, such as a global pandemic, may not have meaning in the moment but will eventually teach us something. She encourages embracing both success and failure as part of the journey towards personal growth.

    • Feeling like a failure due to societal conditioning and personal beliefsDespite valuable contributions, women experiencing infertility may feel like failures due to societal expectations and personal beliefs about motherhood. Remember, motherhood comes in various forms, and focusing on positivity and personal growth can lead to significant achievements.

The experience of infertility can lead women to feel like failures due to societal conditioning and personal beliefs, despite the many valuable contributions they make without having children. This feeling of failure can stem from medical professionals' language and women's deeply ingrained beliefs about their role as mothers. Additionally, the uncertainty of what could have been achieved through various interventions and the fear of prioritizing motherhood over other passions can contribute to these feelings. However, it's essential to remember that motherhood comes in various forms, and spreading happiness and positivity can be a form of nurturing and giving life to others. Furthermore, the time and energy saved from not having children can lead to significant achievements and personal growth. Ultimately, it's crucial to recognize the value of women's lives beyond their reproductive capabilities and to embrace the various ways they can contribute to the world.

    • Lessons from painful experiences shape usEmbrace past experiences, learn from them, and understand that they contribute to personal growth and success. Value feminine qualities for growth and trust the universe for opportunities.

Our past experiences, even the painful ones, hold valuable lessons that shape us into stronger, empathetic, and beautiful individuals. It's essential to remember that given the information and person we were at the time, we may have made different choices. But the growth and wisdom we gain from those experiences are invaluable. Feminine qualities such as empathy, vulnerability, and nurturing are crucial for personal growth and success. During moments of feeling lost and misunderstood, it's essential to remember that those feelings are transient and will help forge our character. We must wait for our moment in life and trust that the right people and opportunities will come to us in due time.

    • Turning painful experiences into something beautifulEmbrace setbacks and transform them into opportunities for growth and personal development

Life's most valuable experiences, whether it's waiting for children to be born or enduring a difficult breakup, are worth the wait. Age brings wisdom and empowerment, and setbacks, such as failed relationships, can lead to new opportunities. The speaker's personal story of selling her wedding dress on eBay after a divorce to fund her podcast launch is a poignant example of turning something painful into something beautiful. Additionally, the idea of letting go and embracing change is essential for personal growth. As Ali Hafner wisely said, life is not a race, but a journey filled with wisdom and knowledge to be gathered along the way.

    • Discovering unexpected love after past disappointmentsLetting go of past relationships and embracing new experiences can lead to unexpected and meaningful connections.

Sometimes, letting go of past relationships and experiences, even those that seemed disappointing or unpromising at first, can lead to unexpected and wonderful new opportunities. This was the case for Elizabeth, who after a series of breakups, turned to online dating out of desperation and ended up meeting her future husband, Justin, on Hinge. Despite his unremarkable profile, Elizabeth was drawn to Justin's honesty and integrity, and the two discovered they shared a deep connection. This experience taught Elizabeth that true love can take many forms and that sometimes, it's the slow-burning, secure connections that are the most meaningful. The universe, with its seemingly infinite number of possibilities, unfolds exactly as it should, and it's through letting go and embracing new experiences that we can discover the unexpected joys of life.

    • Embrace Failures for GrowthRecognize failures as opportunities for growth and learning in relationships, just as in science.

Our choices and experiences shape our destinies, and failure can serve as valuable data for personal growth. The speaker shares her belief in the interplay between free will and destiny, drawing parallels between her own romantic journey and the scientific method. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing and learning from failures in relationships, as they can lead us closer to finding what truly suits us. As quoted in the philosophical work "Philosophy," failure is a form of data acquisition, and every bad experience, whether in love or science, can provide essential insights. The speaker encourages embracing failures as opportunities for growth and learning, ultimately bringing us closer to our goals.

    • Embracing the process of data collection for personal growthRejecting what we don't want leads us to what we do want. Every mistake or rejection is an opportunity to learn and improve.

Data collection plays a crucial role in various aspects of life, including dating. The speaker emphasizes that the process of rejecting what we don't want ultimately leads us to what we do want. He shares his experience of using a dating app as an efficient data collection tool and encourages viewers not to take rejection personally. Instead, every mistake or rejection is an opportunity to learn and improve. The speaker also shares his personal struggle with balancing his desires for a retreat and a relationship and encourages putting our desires out into the universe to attract them. Overall, the speaker encourages embracing the process of data collection and learning from every experience to increase our chances of success.

    • Challenging Societal Expectations for Personal GrowthQuestion societal pressures, embrace self-reflection, and challenge expectations for a more authentic and fulfilling life.

Our lives are shaped by external expectations and conditioning, which can limit our personal growth and happiness. The speaker shares her experiences with societal pressures to conform to certain norms, such as the need to be in a romantic relationship or the pressure to always put on a positive front. She emphasizes the importance of questioning these conditioned beliefs and allowing ourselves the freedom to choose our own paths. The speaker also suggests that retreats, whether in person or online, can provide a valuable space for introspection and personal growth. Ultimately, the key takeaway is the importance of self-reflection and the courage to challenge societal expectations in order to live a more authentic and fulfilling life.

    • Exploring authenticity and self-discoveryQuestion societal expectations, discover who you truly are, and prioritize empathy, compassion, and connection.

We should question our actions and motivations, especially when they are driven by societal expectations rather than our own desires. The speaker shares her personal experience of feeling trapped in a marriage and realizing she hadn't taken the time to discover who she truly was and what she wanted. She encourages us to examine how many of our actions are preordained and consider if we would have the courage to say "no" if something isn't for us. The speaker also highlights the importance of empathy, compassion, and connection during challenging times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and emphasizes that success is being the best version of ourselves in these areas. She also shares her love for the romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally," which she finds appealing because it's about finding love when you least expect it. Overall, the conversation emphasizes the importance of self-discovery, authenticity, and human connection.

    • Appreciation and Inspiration from Unexpected SourcesFind inspiration and connection in unexpected places and people, and share their stories to inspire and change lives.

Love and connection can be found in the most unexpected places and from the most unexpected people. This was evident in Mo Gaudet's heartfelt conversation with Elizabeth Day. Mo expressed her deep appreciation for Elizabeth, sharing how she has had a profound impact on her life and inspired her in countless ways. Mo also encouraged listeners to spread the word about their conversation and to find her on various social media platforms for more inspiring conversations. Ultimately, Mo emphasized the importance of taking time to connect with others and find inspiration in their stories. By sharing her own experiences and insights, Mo hopes to inspire and change the lives of one million people.

John Sanei - The Year of Symbiosis and Living from a Vision of the Future (And Not Memories of the Past)

Happy New Year! What better way to start off 2021 than with a futurist? Ah, but John Sanei is not your typical futurist. His work combines ancient wisdom in its approach to futurism, and I know you'll agree when I say this is one of the most incredible conversations we've had on this podcast so far.

I normally prepare a lot before interviews, but I wanted to flow with John because my friend who introduced us, Alice Law (interview with her coming soon!), told me that John will take the talk to some amazing places. That is exactly what happened. Consider me a huge fan of John Sanei from now on.

John Sanei is a best-selling author, futurist and keynote speaker whose passion for psychology and technology has seen him engage with brands across the globe, and help them build the mental approach needed to make tomorrow more abundant than they ever thought possible.

In What’s Your Moonshot? (his first book) he inspires the reader to ask bigger, bolder and more courageous questions about the future. In MAGNETiiZE – his second book, he invites the reader to focus on elegant, conscious and deliberate questions about the future.

John is proudly the first African faculty member of Singularity University in San Francisco.

Dr. Bruce Greyson - What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond

Dr. Bruce Greyson - What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond

Today's guest is Dr. Bruce Greyson, discussing one of my all time favorite topics: near-death experiences.

Bruce is the Chester Carlson Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. His interest in near-death experiences (NDE's) began just a few months after graduating from medical school, when he treated an unconscious patient in the emergency room who stunned him the next morning with an account of leaving her body.

That event challenged his beliefs about the mind and the brain, and ultimately led him on a journey to study near-death experiences scientifically, leading to more than a hundred publications in medical journals. He co-founded the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS), an organization to support and promote research into these experiences. Through his research, he has discovered common and universal themes in near-death experiences that go beyond neurophysiological or cultural interpretations, as well as patterns of consistent aftereffects on individuals’ attitudes, beliefs, values, and personalities.

He is the author of the newly released After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond, a fantastic book I recommend.

    Listen as we discuss:

    • Bruce's new book, After, and the decades of research behind it
    • Growing up in a materialist household without consideration of the non-physical
    • The incredible story of how he came to believe in and begin researching NDE's
    • How do you measure near death experiences scientifically?
    • The characteristics and definition of near-death experiences.
    • Getting the brain out of the way can actually lead to clearer thinking.
    • "The brain is the messenger and interpreter of the mind."
    • The senses and mind only let in the signals we need for survival, not spirituality.
    • Multiple cases of how patients leave their bodies and see verifiable truths
    • Life review and meeting deceased love ones, even those they didn't know died.
    • The complete elimination of the fear of death is the main after effect of a NDE.
    • The evidence points to the physical world not being the whole story.
