Episode 142 The week in ADHD (41)

    enNovember 24, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • The Challenges of Podcasting: Behind the ScenesPodcasting requires commitment and investment, but addressing health concerns is crucial, even during production.

Creating and maintaining a podcast, even something as enjoyable as the ADHD Adults Podcast, can be all-consuming. During this episode, the hosts, James and Alex, shared some behind-the-scenes chaos, including interruptions and technical difficulties. They also discussed their personal experiences, including a hospital visit for Sam due to chest pains. Despite the challenges, they continue to produce the podcast because of their commitment and investment in the project. The theme of the episode was anger, and they encouraged listeners to send in questions on the topic. Sam shared her experience at the hospital, which was initially dismissed as nothing serious but later led to further tests and a diagnosis of costochondritis. The hosts emphasized the importance of addressing health concerns and not ignoring symptoms, even if they seem minor. Overall, the episode showcased the ups and downs of creating a podcast and the importance of prioritizing health and well-being.

    • Public meltdowns and neurodivergencePublic meltdowns are a part of neurodivergence, but can be embarrassing and isolating. Kindness and empathy from strangers can make a big difference during difficult times. Self-care and self-compassion are crucial for managing mental and physical health.

Public meltdowns are a part of neurodivergence, but they can be embarrassing and isolating. The speaker shared an experience of being in a public place for hours without any comforting items or distractions, leading to a meltdown and feelings of guilt and anger towards those who stared and judged. However, the experience also highlighted the importance of kindness and empathy from strangers who offered help and support during difficult times. The speaker encourages everyone to be understanding and supportive towards individuals experiencing meltdowns in public, rather than judging or pointing fingers. Additionally, the speaker emphasized the impact of physical health on mental health and the importance of self-care and self-compassion during challenging times.

    • Exploring the Complexities of Maintaining Good HealthSmall changes can lead to significant improvements in health. Unexplained symptoms may require electrolyte supplements and addressing family health issues. Persistence is key in overcoming challenges.

Maintaining good health involves addressing both physical and mental aspects, and small changes can lead to significant improvements. The speaker in this conversation has been working on making healthier choices, such as exercising regularly and improving hydration. However, despite drinking large amounts of water, they have been experiencing unexplained dehydration and headaches. They have also been losing a lot of fluid, but aren't urinating as much as usual. This has led them to take electrolytes before bed to prevent migraines. They also mentioned an interesting connection to a molecule they had worked on in the past that could have potentially made them billions, but they were working on the wrong aspect of it. The conversation then shifted to the speaker's family's health issues and their own struggles with technology, specifically creating a website for their coaching business. Overall, the conversation highlights the importance of persistence in maintaining good health and the unexpected challenges that can arise.

    • Staying focused on priorities despite setbacksAdapt and find creative solutions to overcome unexpected obstacles and stay committed to goals

Despite the challenges and distractions, it's important to stay focused on priorities and not let minor setbacks derail progress. The speaker shared an experience of losing productivity time due to various reasons, including a lack of a necessary ingredient for their cats and an earworm that caused insomnia. However, they emphasized the importance of adapting and finding creative solutions, such as making their own ingredient or trying to break an earworm by listening to the whole song. These incidents served as reminders of the importance of staying committed to goals, even when faced with unexpected obstacles. Additionally, the speaker mentioned that migraines are not just headaches, but a source of humor for them, indicating a positive attitude towards overcoming challenges.

    • Importance of patience during injury recoveryPatience during injury recovery is crucial for better outcomes. Avoid pushing oneself too hard and find engaging, productive ways to cope with boredom and impatience.

It's important to find ways to cope with the boredom and impatience that come with recovering from physical injuries and taking necessary rest. Victoria from Discord shared her struggle with wanting to heal quickly but pushing herself too hard, leading to setbacks and potential job loss. The monotony of sitting around doing nothing can be overwhelming, and it's easy to get lost in terrible TV or podcasts. The discussion touched on various topics, including Wes Anderson's films based on short stories by Roald Dahl and Rudyard Kipling, the unusual reproductive methods of bats, and the addiction to computer games. However, the underlying theme was the importance of being patient and allowing oneself to rest during injury recovery. It's a challenging balance, but finding ways to stay engaged and productive without pushing oneself too hard can lead to better outcomes in the long run.

    • Engaging in activities despite challengesDiscovering alternative forms of exercise or hobbies can help improve mental and emotional well-being, even when facing physical challenges or discomfort.

Finding ways to engage in activities, even when facing physical challenges or discomfort, can help improve mental and emotional well-being. The discussion revealed that some people struggle with motivation and consistency in their exercise routines due to various reasons such as chronic pain or lack of enjoyment. However, they shared creative solutions to overcome these obstacles, like trying out different forms of exercise or finding alternative ways to engage in favorite activities. For instance, Victoria, who hates writing, found joy in expressing herself through letters to her loved ones. Alex, who had undergone an operation, discovered that low-impact exercises like cycling and swimming were effective alternatives to high-impact activities. Sam, who felt overwhelmed by the monotony of certain activities, suggested finding new and rewarding hobbies. Overall, the conversation underscored the importance of staying active and finding joy in everyday activities, even when faced with challenges.

    • Recognizing the addiction-like nature of negative self-talkNegative self-talk can become an addiction for individuals with ADHD, leading to a cycle of self-destructive thoughts and behaviors. To break this cycle, practice self-compassion, set achievable goals, and challenge negative thought patterns.

Negative self-talk can become a crutch or addiction for individuals, particularly those with ADHD, when dealing with health and other challenging areas of their lives. This maladaptive strategy, while a way to prepare for potential rejection or negative consequences, can lead to a cycle of self-destructive thoughts and behaviors. It's essential to recognize this pattern and start practicing small, achievable goals and self-compassion to break the cycle. Radical acceptance can help, but the real work begins when we challenge ourselves to change our thought patterns and focus on progress rather than perfection. It's a difficult process, but acknowledging the addiction-like nature of negative self-talk is the first step towards overcoming it.

    • The protector mechanism in negative self-talkNegative self-talk and self-blame can provide temporary relief from anxiety and uncertainty, but over time, they can become a crutch, increasing stress and anxiety instead.

Negative self-talk and self-blame can serve as a coping mechanism for anxiety and uncertainty. This phenomenon, often referred to as the protector in Internal Family Systems therapy, helps individuals protect themselves psychologically from external criticism and criticism of themselves. However, this short-term relief comes at a cost. Over time, negative self-talk and self-blame can become a crutch, building up stress and anxiety rather than alleviating it. This is similar to how individuals may blame external factors or others for their problems to reduce uncertainty and gain a sense of control. The speaker also shares their personal struggle with alcohol, emotional dysregulation, and potential undiagnosed ADHD, which may contribute to their negative self-talk and self-blame. Overall, the discussion highlights the complex relationship between anxiety, uncertainty, self-talk, and coping mechanisms.

    • Understanding Alcohol Use Disorder and AddictionAlcohol can mask underlying conditions, leading to a vicious cycle. Recognize if alcohol is causing harm and disrupting your life, and consider seeking support for mental health and recovery.

Alcohol use disorder and addiction are complex issues, and it's essential to understand the difference between them. Alcohol can act as a coping mechanism for underlying conditions like ADHD, leading to a vicious cycle. If you're unsure whether you have a problem, consider how alcohol affects you and those around you. It's crucial to recognize that the labels "drunk" or "alcoholic" may not accurately represent your situation. Instead, consider if your alcohol use is causing harm and disrupting your life. Moreover, alcohol can have detrimental effects on mental health, causing depression, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, and sleep disturbances. These issues can be directly linked to alcohol use due to its neurodepressant and sedative properties. If you're using alcohol to self-medicate underlying conditions, quitting can lead to the reemergence of those conditions. Lastly, it's important to acknowledge that you may not fully understand your identity if you've spent most of your life masking your true self with substances. Take the time to get to know yourself sober and unmasked, and consider seeking support if needed. Remember, recovery is a journey, and it's essential to be kind to yourself throughout the process.

    • Discovering Hidden Struggles of ADHDPeople with ADHD can mask their emotional challenges, including anxiety and anger, leading to significant impacts on personal relationships and societal interactions.

People with ADHD, including those who appear to have their lives together, can struggle with anxiety, masking behaviors, and emotional dysregulation, particularly in the form of anger. These challenges can significantly impact their personal relationships and interactions with society. The speaker shares his personal experience of discovering Alex's hidden struggles despite knowing him for 15 years. He emphasizes the importance of understanding and addressing anger and emotional dysregulation as a significant aspect of ADHD. The speaker also highlights the profound impact it can have on individuals and their relationships.

    • Effective communication and understanding intent can help manage anger in relationshipsAcknowledge anger, express it appropriately, assume kind intent, gain perspective, apologize, ask questions, and understand that intense emotions in individuals with autism are not always anger.

Effective communication and understanding intent can help manage and diffuse anger in personal relationships. The speakers emphasized the importance of acknowledging anger, expressing it appropriately, and assuming kind intent to prevent misunderstandings and potential conflicts. They also suggested writing down the cause of anger as a way to gain perspective and realize its absurdity. The conversation touched upon the difference between temporary emotional dysregulation and prolonged anger, with the latter requiring the assumption of good intentions to maintain a healthy relationship. Additionally, they discussed the importance of apologizing and asking questions to clarify situations and prevent unnecessary anger. Although not directly related to anger, the speakers also mentioned that individuals with autism may experience intense emotions and behaviors that can resemble anger, but are actually part of their condition.

    • Unmanaged emotions during adolescence can lead to harmful actionsRecognize and manage emotions during adolescence to prevent causing harm to yourself and others, and develop emotional intelligence and regulation.

Unmanaged emotions, particularly during adolescence, can lead to harmful actions and long-term consequences. The speaker shared an experience of hurting someone during a moment of emotional overwhelm, which left them feeling ashamed and fearful. This incident, which occurred during a podcast episode, involved the speaker becoming physically aggressive towards the person who had triggered her emotions. She expressed deep regret and couldn't explain why she reacted that way. This experience has stayed with her and contributes to her current fear. It's essential to recognize and manage emotions, especially during vulnerable periods like adolescence, to prevent causing harm to ourselves and others. The speaker's story serves as a reminder of the importance of emotional intelligence and regulation.

    05 - SOBRIETY - Louise Rumball's Sobriety Story

    05 - SOBRIETY - Louise Rumball's Sobriety Story
In this episode, Louise and Dr Helene explore Louise’s coping mechanisms over the past few years and how an intense life of hard work and constant pressure, often led to her partying harder than she had wanted to on the weekends. Whilst initially seemingly innocent, Louise started to understand that whilst she didn’t classify herself as having a traditional ‘problem’ with alcohol, her relationship with alcohol wasn’t as healthy as it could be, often ending up in awful hangovers, bad decisions and added stress when Monday came around.⠀Louise and Dr Helene explore why, unfortunately, Louise had to come head to head with a traumatising event one evening whilst intoxicated before she decided that it was time to face up to her relationship with alcohol and sleeping pills. ⠀Since that evening, Louise embarked on a journey of sobriety and it has now been 2 years and 8 months since she decided to stop drinking. Until now, Louise has never shared this personal story, but is today sharing in the hope that it may be comforting for others who have been in a similar situation, and potentially inspiring for those who are sober curious and interested in exploring a life without alcohol and drugs.⠀In this episode, she discusses how her relationship with alcohol and sleeping pills developed throughout her 20s, whether she ever classified this as a problem and why it took so many years for her to come to the decision to finally stop drinking.⠀Louise & Dr Helene also discuss how she went sober, whether she did it with professional help or on her own, and how she has managed to stay sober in a world full of party animals and normalisation of drinking.⠀In a touching and uplifting episode, Louise reflects on how far she has come and the incredible positives she has gained from her journey over the last few years - and the message she wants to share with anyone who is listening or has gone through a similar journey.⠀This episode is for anyone - the people who love drinking but hate the hangovers, the people who end up making bad decisions and wish they could stop but don’t know how, those who self medicate with alcohol and drugs to distract from reality, and those who would just be interested in knowing what it might be like to not drink for a day, week or month.⠀In this episode - everything is on the table - and we hope that you enjoy as we breakdown society’s relationship with alcohol, as well as Louise’s. How is your relationship with alcohol? Is it something you would like to work on? Would you one day consider going sober?⠀Love the podcast? Did our message resonate with you?
