221: Difficult parents and how to deal with them

How do you navigate a relationship with one or more parents who are challenging, or even outright toxic? Our relationships with our parents (or parental figures) can have a huge impact on our mental health, not to mention the role they play in influencing many of our other relationships in life.

If you find yourself in a situation where a parent or parent figure is difficult to deal with, it can be tough to know how to handle things… so, that’s what I’m talking about this week in Episode 221 of the Let’s Talk About Mental Health podcast. So, let’s talk! 🙂

Osher Günsberg Is Back After The (Psychotic) Break

Osher Günsberg Is Back After The (Psychotic) Break
Even in the darkest moments, there exists the potential for redemption, rebuilding, and the reclamation of one’s life. Today’s guest is a living embodiment of this truth. Meet Osher Günsberg—one of the most celebrated television hosts and media personalities in Australia.  Longtime listeners may recall Osher’s first appearance on the podcast over nine years ago (episode #76) where we discussed his journey to the big stage and his transformation from being a chubby kid to a plant-powered, marathon-running host of Australian Idol. Shortly after that conversation, Osher experienced a public psychotic breakdown that left him terrified, distressed and convinced the world was coming to an end. But rather than hide this experience and internalize his struggles with his mental health and substance abuse, Osher bravely began to talk openly about his recovery. Today he shares that terrifying experience in vivid detail, what happened, how he clawed his way back to sanity, and the hard-earned lessons he’s garnered along the way—which you can also read about in his powerful memoir, Back, After The Break. Note: Today we discuss suicidal thoughts and ideation. If that subject is too confronting, perhaps skip this episode. If you are struggling, please raise your hand and reach out for help. You can call SAMHSA’s National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP and if you are experiencing suicidal ideation, I encourage you to call the Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1 (800) 273-TALK. Osher demonstrated a huge amount of courage and vulnerability to share his story.  My hope is that his narrative serves as a powerful reminder that taking responsibility for your mental health is crucial, and the bravest thing you can do is ask for help. Hallomeme Bonus: Slender Man

    Hallomeme Bonus: Slender Man

When two 12 year-old girls attacked their friend in the woods of Waukesha, Wisconsin in May of 2014, they claimed to have done it to please Slender Man -- a fictional monster created by Eric Knudsen, A.K.A. "Victor Surge," on an internet forum called "Something Awful." That incident put a mainstream, national news spotlight on the figure, which was already being widely circulated and adapted online as a meme.

In this bonus episode of Endless Thread's meme series, we examine Slender Man as monster, meme, and myth.

    05 - SOBRIETY - Louise Rumball's Sobriety Story

    05 - SOBRIETY - Louise Rumball's Sobriety Story
In this episode, Louise and Dr Helene explore Louise’s coping mechanisms over the past few years and how an intense life of hard work and constant pressure, often led to her partying harder than she had wanted to on the weekends. Whilst initially seemingly innocent, Louise started to understand that whilst she didn’t classify herself as having a traditional ‘problem’ with alcohol, her relationship with alcohol wasn’t as healthy as it could be, often ending up in awful hangovers, bad decisions and added stress when Monday came around.⠀Louise and Dr Helene explore why, unfortunately, Louise had to come head to head with a traumatising event one evening whilst intoxicated before she decided that it was time to face up to her relationship with alcohol and sleeping pills. ⠀Since that evening, Louise embarked on a journey of sobriety and it has now been 2 years and 8 months since she decided to stop drinking. Until now, Louise has never shared this personal story, but is today sharing in the hope that it may be comforting for others who have been in a similar situation, and potentially inspiring for those who are sober curious and interested in exploring a life without alcohol and drugs.⠀In this episode, she discusses how her relationship with alcohol and sleeping pills developed throughout her 20s, whether she ever classified this as a problem and why it took so many years for her to come to the decision to finally stop drinking.⠀Louise & Dr Helene also discuss how she went sober, whether she did it with professional help or on her own, and how she has managed to stay sober in a world full of party animals and normalisation of drinking.⠀In a touching and uplifting episode, Louise reflects on how far she has come and the incredible positives she has gained from her journey over the last few years - and the message she wants to share with anyone who is listening or has gone through a similar journey.⠀This episode is for anyone - the people who love drinking but hate the hangovers, the people who end up making bad decisions and wish they could stop but don’t know how, those who self medicate with alcohol and drugs to distract from reality, and those who would just be interested in knowing what it might be like to not drink for a day, week or month.⠀In this episode - everything is on the table - and we hope that you enjoy as we breakdown society’s relationship with alcohol, as well as Louise’s. How is your relationship with alcohol? Is it something you would like to work on? Would you one day consider going sober?⠀Love the podcast? Did our message resonate with you?
