    • Acknowledging and Addressing Fear and AnxietyDiscussed coping mechanisms for fear of going outside due to mass shootings, dealing with ex-relationships, and the importance of mental health in the workplace

Fear and anxiety can manifest in various aspects of life, and it's essential to find ways to cope with them. During the show, we discussed the fear of going outside due to mass shootings and the stress of dealing with ex-relationships. John shared his pet peeve about the misconception of the word "drowning," and the audience reacted with criticism. The conversation then shifted to the importance of mental health and addressing workplace issues. Despite the light-hearted moments, the underlying theme was the importance of acknowledging and addressing fear and anxiety in our lives. If you're struggling with mental health or workplace issues, give the Doctor John Deloney Show a call at 1-844-693-3291.

    • Limit media exposure to manage anxiety during uncertain timesLimit media consumption and seek trusted sources to reduce anxiety during uncertain events, especially when personal experiences add to the challenge.

Managing anxiety during times of heightened fear and uncertainty, such as the fear of mass shootings, involves limiting exposure to media coverage of such events. The constant repetition of traumatic events in the media can trigger our brains to perceive danger even when it may not exist, leading to anxiety and fear. Instead, it's recommended to seek out trusted sources of information and limit the amount of media consumption. Personal experiences and intimate knowledge of traumatic events can make it even more challenging to cope, but cutting off the media and being selective about what we choose to engage with can help reduce anxiety and improve overall well-being.

    • Maintain a balanced perspective towards media coverageLimit media consumption, stay informed but not obsessed, and practice situational awareness in a calm and rational manner to make better decisions and stay safe.

While it's important to be aware of potential dangers and stay informed, it's equally crucial to recognize the role of sensational media coverage and maintain a balanced perspective. For instance, despite common perceptions, college professors and kindergarten teachers hold some of the safest jobs in terms of work-related fatalities. However, constant exposure to news about shootings or other violent incidents can trigger our brains to enter a state of heightened fear or anxiety, impairing our rational thinking and judgment. To counteract this, limiting media consumption, staying informed but not obsessed, and practicing situational awareness in a calm and rational manner can help us make better decisions and stay safe. For example, when shopping, instead of letting fear control our actions, we can observe our surroundings without letting our brains go into a state of panic, and avoid indulging in unnecessary dramatization or speculation.

    • The media we consume shapes our perception of the worldEngaging with people in daily life counters negative media effects, promoting positive mental health and overall well-being

The media we consume shapes our perception of the world around us. If we continuously expose ourselves to negative content, such as crime podcasts and violent TV shows, we may begin to view everyone as potential threats. However, by intentionally engaging with people in our daily lives through simple acts of communication, we can counteract this negative mindset and remind ourselves that the vast majority of people are kind and lovely. The data supports this, as most of us are safe most of the time. Therefore, making a conscious effort to seek out positive interactions and connections with others can have a significant impact on our mental health and overall well-being.

    • Managing Stress and Anxiety: A Personal StruggleRecognizing stress and anxiety as a choice, seeking support, and practicing presentness can lead to a healthier, more balanced life.

Managing stress and anxiety is crucial for our overall health and well-being. The speaker shares his personal struggle with constant stress and anxiety, which often stems from a high-pressure job and the need to always be in control. He expresses uncertainty about seeking medical help in the form of an SSRI, but acknowledges the importance of vulnerability and reaching out for advice. The conversation also highlights the importance of slowing down, being present, and connecting with others to regain humanity and reduce the risk of inflammatory diseases. Ultimately, the speaker recognizes that feeling stressed and anxious is a choice, and taking steps to manage it can lead to a healthier, more balanced life.

    • The importance of rest and communityValue comes from self-care and connection, not work and productivity. Prioritize rest and community for reduced stress, improved patience, and healthier living.

Our value is not determined by how hard we work or how fast we go, but rather by taking care of ourselves and connecting with others. The speaker shares his personal experience of realizing the importance of rest and community after years of pushing himself too hard. He encourages listeners to question where they first heard that their value comes from work and productivity, and warns of the physical and emotional tolls that constant go-go-go mentality can have. By prioritizing rest, community, and work-life balance, we can reduce stress, improve patience, and live healthier, more fulfilling lives.

    • Signs of deep care from a girlfriend during tough timesGirlfriend's support during tough times shows deep care, but focus on self-improvement through medication and lifestyle changes is crucial for mental health.

Even if your girlfriend is trying to help you through difficult times, it's a sign that she cares about you deeply. Regarding mental health, an SSRI medication can help you slow down and focus on self-improvement, but it's not a long-term solution without behavioral modifications. You should prioritize your well-being, including sleep, exercise, and relationships, and consider seeking professional help if needed. Remember, you're worth investing time and effort in yourself, and it's essential to build a balanced life. Don't let the pressure of work or other commitments overshadow your personal growth and relationships. If you're struggling to make changes, start by finding a psychiatrist and reading resources like "Redefining Anxiety" to help guide you on your journey towards better mental health.

    • Investing in Mental and Physical Health for Personal GrowthInvesting time and energy in mental and physical health leads to personal growth and success. Seek professional help, make small daily changes, and practice self-worth and self-acceptance.

Taking care of your mental and physical health is crucial for personal growth and success in all areas of life. The speaker emphasizes the importance of seeking help from professionals, such as counselors and medical doctors, when dealing with emotional and physical challenges. He encourages being open and honest about your struggles, and not relying solely on medication. The journey to wellness starts with self-worth and self-acceptance. The speaker shares his own experience of transformation from a volatile person to a calm and successful individual. He encourages the listener to look in the mirror, acknowledge their worth, and commit to making lifestyle changes. The process involves expressing gratitude, seeking professional help, and making small daily changes, such as writing down things you're grateful for and going for a walk. The speaker offers support and encouragement, urging the listener to call him every step of the way. In essence, the key takeaway is that investing time and energy in your mental and physical health will lead to personal growth and success, and that seeking help and making small daily changes can make a big difference.

    • Prioritizing mental health and respecting boundariesOnline therapy options like BetterHelp offer convenient and affordable alternatives to in-person sessions. Respect ex-partners' boundaries and avoid interfering in their new relationships, unless physical abuse is involved.

It's important to prioritize your own mental health and well-being, even if you can't physically attend therapy sessions in person. Online therapy options, like BetterHelp, offer affordable and convenient alternatives. Additionally, it's crucial to respect boundaries in relationships, especially when it comes to ex-partners. Interfering in their new relationships, even if you believe they're in danger, is not your responsibility. In the email discussion, the group agreed that if physical abuse was involved, it's important to report it to the authorities for their safety. Overall, prioritizing your own well-being and respecting boundaries are key takeaways from the conversation.

    • Intervening in someone's life vs. minding your own businessWhen someone's safety is at risk, intervene. Otherwise, respect personal matters and let individuals make their own choices, considering potential complications like shared responsibilities.

If you're in a situation where you believe someone is in physical danger, it's important to make the call to ensure their safety, even if it means interfering in an ex-relationship. However, when it comes to infidelity or personal matters, it's generally best to mind your own business and let individuals make their own choices. The discussion also touched upon the complications that can arise when there are shared responsibilities, such as children or shared living arrangements. Ultimately, the decision to intervene or stay out of it depends on the specific circumstances and the potential risks involved.

    • The power of human connection and longing for loved onesHuman connection is a powerful force that brings comfort and joy. We all have moments of longing for those we care about, no matter the distance or circumstances. Expressing our feelings and reaching out to loved ones can bring us closer together.

No matter how far apart we may be, there's a deep longing to be close to those we care about. The speaker in this poem expresses his feelings of missing someone dearly, wondering if time would pass him by if he could just be with them. He even goes as far as imagining flying into the sky to be with them. This shows the power of human connection and the desire to be present with loved ones, even during difficult times. It's a reminder that we all have moments when we feel lost and alone, and it's natural to think of those who bring us comfort and joy. The poem also highlights the importance of expressing our feelings and reaching out to those we care about, no matter the distance or circumstances.

EP06: On Boundaries and Accountability, Part 1

Sarah Rice and Therapy Jeff are back with the first half of their two-part conversation on boundaries and accountability. This first episode is all about defining, understanding, setting, communicating, and respecting boundaries.

Jeff breaks down why setting boundaries can be really difficult and how we might gaslight ourselves into thinking our desire to set boundaries is asking for too much. But really, a boundary can be a "gift or a little map" to tell someone else how to be a good friend, lover, co-worker, or family member (because boundaries aren't just for romantic partners).

Sarah and Jeff model a caring, loving way to set boundaries, and Sarah shares her "Relationship Mad Libs" which is a template you can use when you need to establish a boundary in your life.

We also get introduced to Sarah's superhero alter ego that she calls in to do the hard stuff. Her name is Rogue Carbonara, and she's a boundary-setting badass.

We want to hear about your superhero alter ego! They're your favorite superhero combined with your greatest weakness. Jeff's is He-Man Algebra, but we're still workshopping that one.
