    Podcast Summary

    • Censorship of Voices on Social Media: A New Public Square?Despite being private companies, social media platforms' censorship raises concerns, particularly regarding free speech and potential government coordination. The rally against Facebook at their headquarters highlights these issues.

The censorship of voices on social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, despite being private companies, is a significant concern due to the potential coordination with government entities. Steve Kirsch and Bobby Raasch, who have both experienced censorship, argue that these platforms have become the new public square where free speech should be allowed. However, the First Amendment only applies to government censorship, leaving private companies free to censor content as they see fit. The potential coordination between these companies and the government raises questions about the essence of government control over speech. The censorship of information, particularly regarding early treatments, is a concerning issue, and the rally against Facebook at their headquarters aims to address this issue.

    • The role of tech companies in regulating speechTech companies, particularly social media platforms, face complex issues in balancing free speech and regulation as they grow in size and influence, potentially becoming quasi-governmental agencies.

The role of tech companies, specifically social media platforms like Facebook, in regulating speech is a complex issue with implications for our fundamental rights under the First Amendment. The speaker is currently involved in a lawsuit against Facebook, arguing that the platform, due to its size and influence, has effectively become a public square, and thus, may not be able to censor content without becoming a quasi-governmental agency. While individuals have the right to express themselves freely on these platforms, there are limitations, such as not being able to shout fire in a crowded theater or incite violence. However, as these platforms grow in size and significance, the boundaries between private and public space, and between individual expression and governmental regulation, become increasingly blurred. This raises important questions about the balance between free speech and platform regulation, and the potential consequences for our democratic society.

    • The role of social media platforms in censorship and the First AmendmentThe debate centers around social media's power to censor content and potential accountability under the First Amendment. Individuals' free speech rights can be restricted, and government coordination with platforms raises First Amendment concerns. It's crucial to attend protests and safeguard the free flow of information for a functioning democracy.

The ongoing debate surrounds the role of social media platforms, such as Facebook and Google, in censoring content and their potential accountability under the First Amendment. While individuals have the right to express themselves on these platforms, they can be censored or even ejected if the platforms choose to do so. However, if the government is coordinating with these platforms to censor content, it could implicate the First Amendment's government actor exception. The argument for this is currently being made in front of the 9th Circuit. It's crucial for citizens to attend the Facebook protest and express their concerns about having Mark Zuckerberg decide what facts they can access. The free flow of information is essential to the functioning of a democracy, and the ability to criticize government officials is a cornerstone of American democracy, which has been adopted by many other nations. Therefore, it's concerning that this right is being challenged within the United States.

Hope From Farmers with John Kempf

Hope From Farmers with John Kempf

I recently sat down for a fascinating discussion with John Kempf, an Amish entrepreneur who founded @AdvancingEcoAgriculture (AEA) in 2006 and who currently serves as Chief Vision Officer and Executive Board Chairman. Kempf also hosts the Regenerative Agriculture podcast. After his farm was hit by pesticide-induced crop failures, Kempf transitioned to regenerative agriculture practices that strengthen plant immunity, improve soil health, and increase the soil microbiome. AEA has worked on over 4 million acres in the U.S. and internationally, offering farmers a comprehensive approach to regenerative agriculture so that they can become more resilient, effective, and profitable. Thank you for the riveting conversation and for all the incredible environmental work you do, John.

Senator Rand Paul on Wuhan, Fauci and Covid

Senator Rand Paul on Wuhan, Fauci and Covid

U.S. Senator Rand Paul and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. share their experiences with coronavirus and censorship in this historic episode.

Here is the description of Rand Paul's new book, Deception: The Great Covid Cover-Up:

Senator Rand Paul was on to Anthony Fauci from the start. Wielding previously unimaginable power, Fauci misled the country about the origins of the Covid pandemic and shut down scientific dissent.
One of the few leaders who dared to challenge "America’s Doctor" was Senator Rand Paul, himself a physician. Deception is his indictment of the catastrophic failures of the public health bureaucracy during the pandemic.
Senator Paul presents the evidence that:

    • The Covid virus was likely the product of gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab in China—research funded in part by the U.S. government.
    • Taxpayer dollars for that research were deceptively funneled to Wuhan without the required regulatory review.
    • Fauci and his scientific yes-men knew from day one about Covid’s origin and tried to cover it up.
    • Fauci and his allies ruthlessly attacked everyone—including highly qualified scientists—who threatened to reveal the truth about the pandemic.

Why? Hundreds of millions of dollars of grants and unreported royalties were at stake, and heads would roll if the truth got out.

    Banning Books with Suzanne Nossel

    Banning Books with Suzanne Nossel

In this episode of Here’s Where It Gets Interesting, Sharon sits down with Suzanne Nossel, CEO of PEN America, to talk about some of the issues related to free expression and book banning. With more than 4,000 book bans at last count, this is an issue that has swept across the nation. Suzanne discusses what kind of book bans they see the most, and how veiled language about “protecting children” is used to remove books that contain narratives only a minority of people find uncomfortable. Books are more frequently labeled “pornographic” or “indecent" incorrectly, causing a chilling effect across classrooms, libraries, and resulting in some classic literature and health-related content to be removed from the shelves.

How do we as a society reconcile the framework and the value of the 1st Amendment in America, with restrictions on books and the censorship of diverse ideas? And what can the majority of parents do to fight for the freedom of information and expression in schools?

Special thanks to our guest, Suzanne Nossel, for joining us today.
