Find Your Person & Lead Your Love Life w/ Matthew Hussey Pt. 2

    enMay 03, 2024

    Podcast Summary

    • Following personal paths in relationshipsPrioritize personal growth over feelings in relationships, set standards, and speak your truth to attract confidence and happiness

It's important to prioritize your personal path and goals in relationships, rather than solely relying on feelings. This was a theme discussed in the podcast episode with dating expert Matthew Hussey. He shared his experience of pulling away from his now wife during their early relationship, only to realize he missed her when he reached out. The lesson learned was that following your path, even if it means being apart from someone, is crucial for personal growth and happiness. Additionally, the episode emphasized the importance of setting standards and speaking your truth, as it makes us more attractive and confident in relationships.

    • A woman's brave display of warmth and self-awarenessClear communication and self-awareness are essential for maintaining relationships and personal growth.

Effective communication and maintaining standards are crucial in relationships. In the discussed scenario, a woman's message, despite coming across as a bid for attention, was a brave and powerful display of warmth and self-awareness. She acknowledged the confusion in the relationship and expressed her feelings without accusation or judgment. The man, in response, respected her perspective and backed off, recognizing the mismatch in their intentions. The woman's actions demonstrated her commitment to her standards and her ability to move on when a relationship doesn't align with her goals. Ultimately, the story underscores the importance of clear communication and self-awareness in navigating relationships and maintaining personal growth.

    • The importance of vulnerability in relationshipsRecognize and address avoiders in relationships for deeper connections and greater love. Being vulnerable and authentic leads to stronger, healthier relationships.

It's essential to bring your best self to relationships and learn from past experiences, especially when it comes to dealing with avoiders rather than liars. The speaker shared a personal story about a past relationship where he felt unloved and unseen, leading him to believe that vulnerability was a weakness. However, he later learned that being vulnerable and authentic can lead to deeper connections and greater love. He emphasized the importance of recognizing and addressing avoiders in relationships, as they are more common than liars and can cause more harm through their avoidance of difficult conversations. Overall, the speaker's message highlights the importance of being true to oneself and learning from past experiences to build stronger, healthier relationships.

    • Avoiding uncomfortable conversations can lead to unfulfilling relationshipsBe clear about what you want and be willing to have difficult conversations to build healthier, more fulfilling relationships

People often avoid conversations that may lead to uncomfortable outcomes, especially when it comes to relationships. These "avoiders" may find themselves in relationships with other avoiders, leading to unhappiness and unfulfillment. To break this cycle, it's essential to be clear about what you want and be willing to have difficult conversations. Avoiding these conversations may lead to joining a "cult of 2," where both parties end up buying into each other's excuses and staying in an unfulfilling relationship. By being honest and clear about your desires, you can avoid the pitfalls of avoidance and build healthier, more fulfilling relationships. It's important to remember that being the leader of your own love life means standing up for what you want, even if it's uncomfortable at first. Over the years, the speaker has seen a shift in people's willingness to have these difficult conversations, indicating that we may be ready to embrace this approach to relationships.

    • Authenticity draws people inBeing genuine and clear about intentions attracts the right people and brings out their best behavior.

Authenticity and speaking one's truth are key to attracting the right people and building meaningful relationships. The era of social media and filters has made it easier for people to present a polished, but potentially inauthentic, version of themselves. However, when people encounter genuine, authentic interactions, they are drawn to it like water in a drought. Setting and communicating clear standards and boundaries, rather than trying to hide or feign indifference, can actually be attractive and elevate people to their best behavior. A simple example given was a woman who communicated her intentions to a man early on in their relationship, leading him to value her authenticity and ultimately enter a relationship with her. The author's mission with the book is to encourage people to understand that having high standards and boundaries is not only essential for avoiding pain, but also for being an invitation for others to rise to their best behavior.

    • Enhance your dating journey with patience, vulnerability, and the right toolsPatience, vulnerability, and the right tools can make your dating journey more enjoyable. Past experiences don't dictate future ones, and communication and consent are essential in any sexual relationship. Focus on the present and continue learning to change the trajectory of your dating life.

Everyone's dating journey is unique, and it's important to be patient, vulnerable, and kind to oneself. Compatibility with tools like the Tor 3 and the Laylo app can enhance pleasure and intimacy, whether used with a partner or solo. However, dating can be challenging, and it's essential to recognize that past experiences don't dictate future ones. People are complex, and everyone brings their own unique set of circumstances and beliefs. It's crucial to understand that we all do the best we can with the resources we have at the time. By focusing on the present and continuing to learn and grow, we can change the trajectory of our dating lives. Additionally, communication and consent are vital in any sexual relationship. Remember, it's never too late to prioritize your happiness and well-being.

    • Reluctance to discuss sex leads to less activityShame and fear of judgment hinder open conversations about sex, leading to less sexual activity and broader impact on life. Traditional values and sexism also contribute to negative attitudes towards sex.

The reluctance to have open and honest conversations about sex is a common issue for many people, leading to less sexual activity than desired. This reluctance stems from shame and fear of judgment, which extends beyond the bedroom and impacts various aspects of life. Additionally, there's a concerning trend of a return to traditional values and sexism surrounding sex, with an increased focus on judging people based on their "body count." It's essential to be aware of these issues and focus on building skills for vulnerability and effective communication to foster healthy and satisfying relationships.

    • Stay true to yourself in relationshipsSet clear communication and standards, avoid projecting past experiences, and focus on relationships that align with your goals and values.

It's important to be true to yourself and follow your own path in relationships, rather than sacrificing your desires and needs to please others or out of fear of judgment. This means setting clear communication and standards, and being intentional about staying on your path even if it's difficult or uncomfortable. Additionally, avoid projecting past relationship experiences onto new partners and instead, view each relationship holistically. Remember, you deserve to be treated well and with respect as your own unique human being. Situationships may not always turn into real relationships, and it's up to you to ask for what you want and communicate openly to make that happen. Don't waste time on relationships that aren't on your path, and instead, focus on finding and nurturing those that align with your goals and values.

    • Consider the whole picture when evaluating relationshipsFocusing on one negative aspect can be misleading. Evaluate all behaviors and consider the possibility of change before making a decision.

It's essential to consider the whole picture when evaluating relationships instead of focusing on one aspect that may not accurately represent the situation. For instance, a partner who doesn't text frequently but is attentive in person or when contacted may still be a good match. However, if a partner lies and breaks promises, creating a "dark pairing" of negative behaviors, it's crucial to reconsider the relationship. Change in such individuals is possible but often takes a long time and may not occur while you're involved. Additionally, Matthew Hussey emphasizes the importance of self-improvement and accepting that trying to change someone else is generally futile. To learn more from Hussey, check out his book and upcoming event at love life book.com.

    • The power of effective communication in loveBe clear on what you want, communicate authentically, and lead in your relationships for a successful love life.

Effective communication is key to having a fulfilling love life. Matthew Hussey, a well-known dating expert, shared his personal journey of finding love and the importance of self-awareness and authentic expression in relationships. Despite being a relationship guru, Hussey experienced heartbreak and the classic "chaser" dynamic in his own love life. His story of pursuing his wife, who initially moved on, illustrates the importance of being clear on what one wants and being willing to communicate it, even if it means potential discomfort or rejection. Hussey emphasized the importance of being the leader in one's own relationships and the power of vulnerability and authenticity in attracting and maintaining love. Through his personal experiences and expertise, Hussey reinforces the idea that effective communication is the foundation for a successful love life.

    • Communicating authentically in relationshipsSetting boundaries, expressing needs, and being self-empowered leads to healthier, more fulfilling relationships. Effective communication and the ability to repair rifts strengthens bonds.

Authenticity and clear communication are essential in relationships, whether they be friendships or romantic partnerships. It's important to set boundaries and communicate our needs and expectations, rather than playing games or trying to fit into societal norms. This can lead to healthier and more fulfilling relationships. Another takeaway is the importance of self-empowerment and self-assuredness in the dating scene. By being clear on our values and what we're looking for in a partner, we can more easily find people who align with us and avoid wasting time on unhealthy or unfulfilling relationships. Ultimately, the ability to have difficult conversations and repair rifts is what builds strong and lasting relationships.

    • Everyone has a unique 'tank' that shapes their beliefs and experiencesEmbrace diversity of experiences and perspectives, everyone has their own 'tank' that influences their worldview

Everyone grows up in unique environments, or "tanks," that shape their beliefs and experiences. These tanks can influence how we view the world and interact with others. It's essential to remember that not everyone has grown up in the same way and to approach differences with empathy and understanding. The podcast "Sex with Emily" provides a safe space for people to share their stories and learn from each other, promoting vulnerability and openness. By embracing the diversity of experiences and perspectives, we can all expand our knowledge and grow together. So next time you encounter a difference or misunderstanding, consider the idea that everyone has their own tank and give the benefit of the doubt.

Nina Hartley: Porn Star, Activist, and Hand Job Expert
The iconic Porn Star Nina Hartley talks about making porn, feminism, non-monogamy, and how to give a woman the perfect hand job (there is some light pulling and pinching involved). Nina Hartley also talks boldly about the butt. Nina says, “Butts are like cats. They have to be coaxed and seduced every time. They are moody and you can’t fool a butt into liking you, or feeling relaxed. Butts know when the thing touching them is paying attention, or being a jerk.” In other words, if you want to get down and dirty with anal sex, you must have open communication with your partner and feel genuinely comfortable with your butt (and what’s going on inside of it). While drunken anal sex might seem like the greatest thing in the world, it’s better to be fully aware of what is happening and be cognizant of hygiene rules. Before you even get to anal sex or intercourse for that matter, you need to find out what kind of relationships you’re looking for. Are you monogamous and looking for one mate, or are you non-monogamous and ready to land in more than one place? Nina talks about her sexual identity and how she embraced a non-monogamous lifestyle. When we're younger, we often make the same mistakes over and over again. Sleeping with people who don’t care about us, and getting in relationships with people who don’t want the same things as we do, and feeling guilty for having a love life that falls short of a romantic comedy. You have to figure out what works for you, and not anyone else. Some people enjoy random sex, other people don’t. Nina enjoys doing porn because she likes having sex with people without having to date them. Other people find that having sex with strangers makes them feel empty. Find out what kind of relationships makes you happy, and don’t look back. Finally, Nina Hartley gives descriptive directions on how to pleasure a woman with your hands. You’ll learn how to lightly pinch and pull her clitoris and make it move. Nina gives great foreplay tips, because unless she says, “do me right now you sexy beast,” you’re going to have to get her warmed up for sex.
