    Podcast Summary

    • Visualize and soothe your inner emotional selfDuring anxious moments, separate your rational and emotional brains and reassure your emotional self with calming words like 'it's okay' and 'you're safe'.

During moments of anxiety or emotional instability, it can be helpful to visualize and soothe our inner emotional selves, often referred to as our "inner animal," using calming words. This technique, inspired by various psychological concepts such as The Chimp Paradox and The Happiness Hypothesis, encourages us to separate our rational and emotional brains, and provide reassurance to our emotional selves when we don't need an adrenaline response. By having a list of calming words ready, we can effectively tame our inner animal and promote a more rational response to situations. Examples of such words include "it's okay" and "you're safe." This practice can be a simple yet effective way to manage anxiety and promote emotional wellbeing.

    • Challenge gender stereotypes and biases, but also prioritize self-careInternational Women's Day encourages challenging gender norms, but also emphasizes the importance of self-care, including getting enough sleep with Amazon Echo's 'Guided Sleep' feature.

On International Women's Day, the theme is to choose to challenge. This means actively working to disrupt gender stereotypes and biases. But before you tackle the world's challenges, make sure you're getting enough rest. So, if you're having trouble sleeping, give your Amazon Echo a command to open "Guided Sleep." This feature offers various techniques, meditations, and soothing audio to help you unwind and prepare for a good night's rest. Remember, taking care of yourself is an essential part of challenging the status quo and making a difference in the world. So, choose to challenge the norms, and don't forget to challenge yourself to prioritize your sleep. Happy International Women's Day!

Episode 108 - Sleep Easy with Bernice Tuffery, Author, Sleep Coach

Bernice Tuffery is the founder of Sleep Haven New Zealand, author of self-help book and programme Sleep Easy, who dreamed of a better solution for compromised sleep.

Bad sleep sucks.  Sleep deficiency defies our biology and sabotages our days.  Yet more than a third of us struggle to get to sleep or sty asleep at night.

Sleep debt takes its toll on our mood, energy and productivity.  It affects our behaviour around food and exercise and erodes our immunity.

As our best efforts to help ourselves fail, we can feel disempowered and frustrated.

You're not alone, and there is a way through. Bernice Tuffery, fed up after years of compromised sleep, made it her mission to learn how to sleep well again.

She tried early nights, warm baths, meditation, melatonin, and at times sleeping pills, but nothing worked.

As a market researcher, she was determined to learn how to sleep naturally again.

She discovered a proven, natural way to fix her sleep. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia (CBTi) is recognised by sleep experts as the gold-standard treatment.

But with a lack of awareness and a server shortage of experts offering it, it's hard and expensive to access.

From her discussions with sleep professionals, extensive research and her lived experience of restoring her own sleep, Bernice shares her knowledge of self-taught CBTi with humour and heart.

Through her self-help book Sleep Easy, Bernice and her incredible team of coaches present a practical, six-week, step-by-step guide to help you take charge of your sleep, life and health.

How does stress affect your sleep? How does sleep affect your stress levels? How can you improve your sleep? These are things we’re talking about in this episode.

I’m joined by Dr. Jen Parsons, a naturopath and experienced speaker in Toronto’s east end. Dr. Parsons regularly treats patients with anxiety, insomnia, skin conditions, hormonal conditions, and digestive issues. The majority of her patients are experiencing a transition in their life be it a divorce, new job, new school, or new diagnosis. She helps patient’s breakdown these changes into digestible pieces and supports them every step of the way.

She practices with the understanding that you are an expert in what you’re experiencing and she an expert in evidence-based integrative medicine.

Dr. Parsons received her doctorate from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and during her clinical internship she served disadvantaged communities at Queen West Community Health Centre and practiced in a mobile medical clinic with Naturopaths Without Boarders in Cap Haitian, Haiti. Prior to her naturopathic studies, Dr. Parsons received her undergraduate degree from Mount Allison University.

She’s a committed lifelong learner. The field of integrative medicine is always evolving. In between clinic days, you’ll find her reading up on the latest clinical research, attending local and international conferences, and taking continuing education courses.

In her spare time, Dr. Parsons enjoys hanging with her son and husband, cooking healthy meals for her family, practicing yoga and traveling.

We talk about why the amount of sleep that we’re receiving has been progressively decreasing over the years, the signs of sleep deprivation, how lack of sleep contributes to our stress levels and so much more! This episode is a must listen to!!
