Kim Ross - Life as a Working Mom through Divorce and Diagnosis

    en-usJune 08, 2020

    Podcast Summary

    • Unexpected Turns in MarriagePrioritize personal growth and seek a healthy balance in relationships, even if it means making difficult decisions.

Love and relationships can be challenging, and sometimes compromises may not feel right. Kim's story shares her experience of an unexpected turn in her marriage, where she felt the need to compromise but ultimately found herself feeling unsupported and unhappy. Despite the initial love and connection, it's essential to prioritize individual growth and seek a healthy balance in a relationship. Kim's journey serves as a reminder that it's okay to prioritize personal happiness and growth, even if it means making difficult decisions. Through her experiences, she learned the importance of self-discovery and the courage to pursue her passions.

    • Identifying and prioritizing personal nonnegotiables in relationshipsReflect on your values and needs in relationships, rather than just going through the motions to maintain self-worth and emotional health.

People often compromise in relationships out of love, but it's essential to identify and prioritize personal nonnegotiables early on. The speaker shares her experience of sacrificing her own needs and desires for her career and later in her marriage, only to realize the importance of self-worth and emotional health. She encourages listeners to reflect on their own values and needs in relationships, rather than just going through the motions. The consequences of ignoring these needs can be damaging and erode one's sense of self over time. It's never too late to reassess and make changes.

    • Prioritize kindness, support, and emotional availability in relationshipsFocusing on kindness, support, and emotional availability can lead to a more fulfilling and balanced partnership.

When it comes to relationships, especially during the formative years, it's crucial to prioritize kindness, support, and emotional availability. These qualities are essential for a sustainable partnership, providing strength and encouragement during both good times and bad. Additionally, having a safe and vulnerable space in a relationship is vital, allowing for open communication and mutual understanding. The speaker's personal experience underscores the importance of these non-negotiables, as she learned to prioritize them after her long-term relationship ended and she became a single mother. Ultimately, focusing on these aspects can lead to a more fulfilling and balanced partnership.

    • Single parents' financial responsibilities can lead to sacrificing healthSingle parents often feel compelled to work despite health issues due to financial obligations, potentially sacrificing their well-being in the long run.

Pushing through pain and discomfort, even when it's detrimental to our health, can be a common experience for those with financial responsibilities, particularly single parents. The speaker shares her personal story of producing a television show while experiencing debilitating back pain, which left her unable to sit down for six months. Despite the extreme discomfort and emotional turmoil, she felt compelled to continue working due to her financial obligations. This situation is not unique to the speaker, as many women, especially single mothers, face the pressure to support their families and may overlook their own well-being as a result. The world can be unfair in this regard, as these individuals must work just as hard, if not harder, than others while carrying the additional burden of fear, anxiety, and guilt. Ultimately, it's crucial to recognize that sacrificing our health for our livelihoods is not a sustainable solution. While the speaker's show did not return, she hopes it wasn't due to her back pain. This story serves as a reminder to prioritize our well-being and seek support when needed, rather than pushing ourselves to the brink.

    • Ignoring emotional needs can lead to physical painHolistic wellbeing requires addressing emotional and physical needs. Neglecting either can lead to health issues.

Our physical and emotional wellbeing are interconnected, and ignoring our emotional needs can lead to physical pain and discomfort. The speaker shared her personal experience of going through a failed production, which she attributed to her fear of money and relentless work, leading to lower back pain. She interpreted this pain as a message from her body to slow down and address her emotional issues. After recovering from a back operation, she returned to her work and career, only to be diagnosed with breast cancer. This experience further emphasized the importance of listening to our bodies and addressing our emotional and physical needs. It's a reminder that our wellbeing is a holistic process, and neglecting any aspect can have far-reaching consequences.

    • Support during medical journeyHaving loved ones and medical professionals support during medical journey is crucial. Lean on friends and family during appointments and accept help when needed. Explore different healthcare options for best fit.

Going through a medical journey, whether it's good or bad news, can be a challenging experience. During this process, having support from loved ones and medical professionals is crucial. The speaker shares her experience of being diagnosed with breast cancer and the emotional rollercoaster that followed. She describes the importance of having friends and family present during appointments and receiving difficult news. The speaker also emphasizes the value of having different options, such as NHS or private healthcare, and the importance of utilizing resources that are available. Through this experience, the speaker learned the importance of allowing herself to lean on others and accept help during a difficult time.

    • Patient's Right to Choose and Self-AdvocacyPatients have the power to advocate for themselves and choose their treatment journey based on their unique personality and emotional needs. Seeking out a supportive doctor is crucial for effective communication and understanding during cancer treatment.

Patients have the right to choose their own journey during their treatment process. The woman in the discussion shared her experience of receiving a leaflet with a depressing image, which didn't resonate with her and made her feel misunderstood. She spoke up to her doctor about it, expressing her unique personality and the importance of empathy and understanding from medical professionals. Ultimately, she decided to seek out a new doctor who could better support her emotionally through her cancer treatment. This experience emphasizes the importance of patients advocating for themselves and having the confidence to make choices that align with their personal journey towards healing.

    • Sharing Challenges with Loved OnesHonestly sharing challenges with loved ones, especially children, can strengthen bonds and teach valuable lessons about resilience.

Sharing challenges with loved ones, especially children, can bring unexpected strength and growth for all involved. The speaker, in the midst of her own cancer battle, bravely and honestly shared her journey with her daughter, allowing her to be an integral part of the experience. This open communication not only helped the daughter cope but also created a deeper bond between them. The speaker's determination to face her challenges head-on, including the fear of losing her hair, served as an inspiration for her daughter and ultimately led to a memorable and positive year for both of them. By involving her daughter in the process, the speaker taught her the importance of resilience and the power of open communication during difficult times.

    • The power of past experiences to shape usEmbrace past challenges, practice self-love, seek balance, and prioritize self-care for a fulfilling life.

Our past experiences, even the challenging ones, play a crucial role in shaping who we are today. Kim's story is a testament to this, as she shares how her cancer diagnosis and subsequent journey towards self-love and healing transformed her into a stronger, more resilient person. However, she emphasizes that self-love and self-worth are essential components of living a fulfilling life, and something that should not be overlooked. Kim encourages everyone to take charge of their own well-being, seek balance, and find time for self-care. Her journey now involves using her creative background and experience to help others, and she encourages listeners to follow her on social media for more inspiration and resources. Ultimately, Kim's message is one of hope, resilience, and the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity and find joy in life.

In today’s episode of Slo Mo, I sit down with the inimitable Bassem Youssef, a man whose wit and wisdom have challenged and changed the contours of political satire in the Middle East. In a departure from our usual tone, this conversation takes a more contemplative and, indeed, somewhat pessimistic turn as we delve into the complexities of modern life and the daunting challenges that lie ahead.

After it looks like they are able to move much closer and no longer have to do long distance, our caller wonders how to best transition into this new phase, being able to enjoy each other but also respect the space they might need. Our next caller finds herself stuck in a toxic work environment when a situationship starts to go astray. Having an intense  emotional relationship with someone you work with everyday, our caller feels stress when not being able to set proper boundaries both at work and in the situationship with her coworker. Our last caller struggles when her husband's friend continues to try to insert himself and befriend our caller’s family. After her mother says she’s getting DMs from this friend, our caller is unsure how to read his intentions and how to set boundaries while also potentially being supportive if need be.

    ABOUT SARAH:

"Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision."

In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I’ve realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don’t realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they’re sharing them with.

My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home.

The audiobook, Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available!

Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana.

    960 The Voice of Truth

    960 The Voice of Truth

In your life, where does the voice of truth come from? Whose whispers gain your greatest attention?

Maybe it's the constant failures and short-comings.

Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACThttp://facebook.com/groups/thewomenofimpact

Maybe it's the faults of your past.

Maybe it's your own belief that you're never good enough.

Why is it that we hang out with our stumbles and failures questioning our worth?

Never once did God hesitate when He created you; fearfully and wonderfully made, knowing every hair on your head.

Yet where is the voice of truth?

Is it the naysayers, the badgers, the mockers? Is that where your voice of truth is being solidified and defined?

I want you to really think about whom you are putting your trust in.

The K.I.S.S. ~ The Voice of Truth!

REFLECTION: Today, I want you to reflect on these three questions.

    1. Where is the voice of truth coming from?
    2. What is the voice of truth telling you?
    3. How are you using the voice of truth in your life?

If you are hearing God, the only voice of truth, then you know you are loved, given a gift of salvation, and grace for your life's journey.

That's the voice of truth you need to be listening to.

Not the negative CRAP, the doubts and drama of others, and not the daily sagas of self-centered mindsets.

It's all about control, earthly control. What happened to Heavenly control?

Let God wash away the torment of lies that threaten your greatness He's creating within you.

Let it go! Let God have it all!

    Give Him your heart.
Dedicate your life to glorify Him.
Rejoice with the voice of truth.

As you go out this week...

"One step at a time leads to miles of greatness!"

May God bless you this week in all your steps, in all your endeavors. Seek His guidance. Praise His name. The voice of truth!
