Never Fear Failure: Jesse Itzler on Living With A SEAL, Tackling Life Plateaus & Getting Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable

    enNovember 30, 2015

    Podcast Summary

    • Embracing Discomfort for GrowthExperiencing pain and discomfort is essential for personal and professional growth. Pushing through challenges leads to progress and opportunities.

That growth and improvement come from stepping out of comfort zones and facing challenges. Jesse Itzler, an entrepreneur, ultra marathoner, and author, emphasized the importance of experiencing pain and discomfort in order to progress. Whether it's in business, running, or life, pushing through difficulties is essential for growth. Itzler's impressive resume, from rapping to founding Marquis Jet and creating the NBA's "I Love This Game" campaign, demonstrates the power of embracing challenges and turning them into opportunities. So, if you're looking to improve, remember that discomfort is a necessary part of the journey.

    • Embracing new challenges and stepping out of comfort zoneEmbrace new challenges, never settle, never stagnate, and never be afraid to fail to live a more exciting and fulfilling life.

Importance of stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing new challenges. This theme was highlighted in Jesse's experience living with the extraordinary figure, David Goggins. Goggins, a Navy Seal and ultra endurance athlete, challenged Jesse to continually grow and seek discomfort. Jesse's own life has been defined by this fearless approach, as he's always seeking the next challenge, whether it's in business or physical pursuits. This sensibility likely stems from his innate restlessness and desire to keep moving forward. The book "Living with the Seal" details this experience and the valuable lessons Jesse learned from it. These lessons include the importance of never settling, never stagnating, and never being afraid to fail. By constantly pushing yourself out of your comfort zone, you can live a more exciting and fulfilling life.

    • Embracing Discipline with David GogginsDavid Goggins' story taught our speaker the importance of mental and emotional discipline, leading to significant personal growth through consistency and pushing beyond comfort zones.

Pushing beyond comfort zones and embracing discipline, as demonstrated by the inspiring story of David Goggins, can lead to significant personal growth. Goggins, who broke both feet and suffered kidney failure during a race, taught our speaker the importance of mental and emotional discipline, leading the speaker to invite him to live with his family and follow his every command for 31 days. Initially, the goal was to get in great physical shape, but the psychological lessons soon became the most valuable takeaways. Through various challenges, such as push-up sessions, Goggins instilled the importance of consistency and discipline, which could be applied to all areas of life. The speaker's routine had become stagnant, and living with Goggins helped him break free from this rut and improve in various aspects of his life.

    • The Unknown Navy SEAL's InfluenceDavid Goggins, an anonymous Navy SEAL, taught the speaker that exhaustion signals are premature and to push through, inspiring him to attempt an Ultraman race.

Our potential is greater than we think. David Goggins, an anonymous Navy SEAL turned endurance athlete, taught this lesson to the speaker during their training. Goggins emphasized that when the brain signals exhaustion, an athlete is only 40% done. This mindset helped the speaker push through challenging moments during his own endurance journey. Goggins remained anonymous in the speaker's blog and subsequent book to allow readers to form their own mental image of him. Known for his incredible endurance feats despite his size and lack of experience, Goggins inspired the speaker to attempt an Ultraman race. His determination and mental strength served as a guiding force, making him an unlikely but significant influence in the speaker's life.

    • Embracing discomfort for personal growthInviting discomfort into your life can push you beyond your limits and lead to significant personal growth.

Personal growth often requires stepping out of one's comfort zone and embracing discomfort. This was exemplified in a story where the speaker invited a Navy SEAL to live with him and his wife for a month, with the SEAL bringing only a backpack and challenging the couple daily with various tasks to push them out of their comfort zones. Despite having the means to avoid such discomfort, the speaker recognized the value in the experience and believed the SEAL saw an authentic passion for self-improvement. The SEAL's presence forced the couple to confront themselves and raised their baseline for what they thought they were capable of. This concept of embracing discomfort for personal growth is a powerful reminder for us all.

    • The power of commitment and focusEmbrace relentless focus and perfectionism to maximize productivity and eliminate distractions, transforming both work and life.

Commitment and focus, no matter what the task, can lead to remarkable results. The man described in the conversation, who had accomplished extraordinary feats, instilled in the speaker a newfound determination and efficiency in both her personal and professional life. He challenged her to eliminate distractions and make the most of every moment, inspiring her to be more present and productive. Even simple tasks were approached with relentless focus and perfectionism, and the speaker adopted this mindset, maximizing her time and getting more done. The man's philosophy was not just about what you do, but when and how you do it, and his influence helped the speaker redefine her approach to work and life.

    • David Goggins' Presence Inspired Kevin Garnett in a NegotiationEmbrace challenges and the journey for enriching experiences and personal growth, rather than seeking shortcuts.

David Goggins, a Navy SEAL, brought a unique perspective and energy to a negotiation situation. His presence was so captivating that even Kevin Garnett, a professional basketball player, was drawn in. Goggins' intense focus and commitment to physical challenges inspired those around him, demonstrating the value of embracing challenges and the journey rather than seeking shortcuts. Despite having a significant health condition, Goggins pushed through with remarkable determination, challenging the norm and encouraging personal growth. His story serves as a reminder to seek out the most difficult routes in life, as the enriching experiences and lessons gained from overcoming obstacles far outweigh the benefits of taking the easy way out.

    • Adopting Goggins' philosophy for a more fulfilling lifeFive years after being inspired, the interviewee embraces the '40% rule', simplifies life, prioritizes self, schedules daily tasks, and values balance and efficiency.

The life of David Goggins, an ultra-endurance athlete and retired Navy SEAL, has had a profound impact on the interviewee's daily life. Five years after being inspired by Goggins' grit and simple lifestyle, the interviewee has adopted the "40% rule," which encourages tackling challenges despite feeling only 40% ready. They have also prioritized living with more grit, simplifying their life, and putting themselves first. The interviewee has implemented a daily schedule, eliminated nonessential items, and learned to prioritize their time, including dedicating hours for personal growth and family. Training for races falls outside of this personal time allocation. The interviewee strives for balance and efficiency in their life, recognizing that they have control over their time and priorities.

    • Maximizing Time and Productivity with AngerChannel anger into daily tasks, commit to squeezing out potential, embrace fear of failure, and surround yourself with the right team for success.

Maximizing time and productivity requires focus, discipline, and minimizing "dillydallying." David Goggins, an ultra-endurance athlete and retired Navy SEAL, shares his unique perspective on time management, driven by his motivator of anger from a challenging childhood. His approach involves channeling this anger into daily tasks and a commitment to squeezing out every last drop of potential from his life. While this level of dedication may not be achievable for everyone, the book offers valuable business advice and insights on getting started, learning new skills, and persevering through failures. Goggins' story highlights the importance of conviction, consistency, and surrounding oneself with the right partners and team to succeed in various fields. Ultimately, the key to success lies in embracing the fear of failure and staying committed to the journey.

    • Bluffing your way into opportunities with audacityAudacity and confidence can lead to remarkable opportunities, even without formal qualifications or connections. Persistently taking risks and believing in yourself can help you achieve success.

Audacity and confidence, even without formal qualifications or connections, can lead to remarkable opportunities. The interviewee's story of bluffing his way into the music industry by pretending to be a well-known rapper and eventually securing a record deal, demonstrates this concept. This fearlessness and determination to get in the room and make things happen, despite facing rejection multiple times, can be a powerful tool in achieving success. This mindset was also present when the interviewee started Marquis Jet, where he leveraged a positive experience on a private jet to build a successful business. While some may argue that this audacity is innate, the interviewee believes that confidence and determination can be cultivated with persistence and a willingness to take risks.

    • Inspired by a luxurious flight experience, founders persisted in creating a successful business despite initial rejection.Persistence and creativity can lead to successful business partnerships, even when faced with initial rejection. A great product and celebrity endorsement can also contribute to long-term success.

Persistence and creativity can lead to successful business partnerships. The founders of Marquis Jet, inspired by a luxurious flight experience, came up with the idea for a 25-hour flight card. However, they lacked the necessary airplanes to make it a reality. They approached NetJets, but were initially met with a "no." Instead of giving up, they organized a focus group of athletes and entertainers to present their plan, ultimately leading to a successful business. The importance of having a celebrity endorser was also emphasized, but the product itself must be great to keep customers coming back. An example of this was the founders' pursuit of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck to sign up for Marquis Jet. Despite the initial challenges, their determination and innovative approach paid off.

    • Story of unexpected opportunities through persistence and creativityDetermination and adaptability can lead to unexpected opportunities and achievements. Impersonating a staff member led to sitting next to Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, while completing a 100-mile race raised funds for charity.

Persistence and creativity can lead to unexpected opportunities. The speaker recounted a story from his past where he managed to crash an exclusive event by impersonating a staff member and ultimately ended up sitting next to Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. He also shared how he trained for and completed a 100-mile race to raise money for charity, despite facing numerous challenges. Through these experiences, he learned the value of determination and adaptability in achieving goals. Additionally, the speaker mentioned that his charity foundation still exists and continues to distribute funds to various US-based charities.

    • Running as a spiritual practice for mental and emotional well-beingDavid Goggins, an ultra-endurance athlete, emphasizes the importance of a consistent practice, like running, for mental and emotional well-being. His commitment to giving back and endurance mindset have led him to success in various challenges and entrepreneurial pursuits.

David Goggins, an ultra-endurance athlete and author, emphasizes the importance of having a consistent practice, such as running, for mental and emotional well-being. He has raised over $1,000,000 for his foundation through various challenges, including a 100-mile bike ride and a 100-mile run. Running is a spiritual and meditative practice for him, allowing him to clear his mind and start his day. He recently became a part-owner of the Atlanta Hawks basketball team and is involved in community initiatives, such as building basketball courts in inner cities. Goggins's endurance mindset and commitment to giving back have led him to success in both his athletic and entrepreneurial pursuits.

    • Embracing Challenges for Personal GrowthEmbrace challenges to push past limits, find balance in life, and prioritize nutrition for optimal performance.

Pushing oneself beyond limits and facing challenges, no matter how seemingly insurmountable, can have a profound impact on personal growth and development. This concept, known as the Misagi, was shared by NBA player Kyle Korver, who inspired the speaker to adopt new fitness challenges. The speaker also emphasized the importance of finding balance in life, particularly in relationships, by making time for family and shared experiences. Additionally, the speaker discussed the importance of nutrition, specifically the practice of only consuming fruit before noon to conserve energy for more important activities. Overall, the conversation highlighted the value of perseverance, mindfulness, and prioritization in personal and professional life.

    • The role of food digestion in energy levelsSwitch to fresh fruit for breakfast, avoid mixing proteins and starches, experiment individually, prioritize authentic relationships, and maintain commitment to healthy choices.

The efficiency of food digestion plays a significant role in our energy levels. Processed foods, meats, and large breakfasts make digestion more difficult, leading to less energy. The speaker shared a personal experience of switching to fresh fruit for breakfast before running a marathon and feeling significantly better. Other takeaways from the book included avoiding mixing proteins and starches. The speaker emphasized the importance of individual experimentation to determine what works best for one's body. Relationships were also highlighted as crucial in the speaker's success equation, both personally and professionally. Authentic relationships have been instrumental in advancing the speaker's career, and the ability to help and spoil loved ones is a rewarding aspect of having success. Despite challenges, such as influencing a child's diet at school, the speaker encourages doing the best one can and maintaining a commitment to healthy choices.

    • Building Authentic Relationships in Your TwentiesForm genuine friendships, step out of comfort zone, stay accountable for your own life, and prioritize relationships for a fulfilling and purposeful life.

Building authentic relationships during your twenties can lead to significant rewards in the future. The speaker emphasizes the importance of meeting people, cultivating friendships, and staying in touch. He also highlights the significance of stepping out of your comfort zone and challenging yourself to make changes, as encapsulated in the concept of the "accountability mirror." The speaker's experience demonstrates that genuine friendships, formed during the twenties, can be long-lasting and mutually beneficial. Moreover, he encourages listeners to be accountable for their own lives and to take the first step towards making positive changes, even if it means feeling uncomfortable. The key message is to prioritize relationships and self-accountability in order to live a fulfilling and purposeful life.

Courage to Face the Hard Stuff

Courage to Face the Hard Stuff

One of the most common struggles people share with me is the fear of healing or growing.

At first, it may sound counterintuitive since we all want to be happy, positive, and peaceful since that's what growing and healing provide.

However, if we bottled up too much for too long, looking at the truth of who we are or the truth of our situation terrifies us.

Although the fear of healing and growth is natural, we can't let it stop us from the transformation we need to go through. In the end, it's the only way to significantly change your life.

In today's episode, I will talk about the fear of growth and why not every pain we feel is the same.

The pain of being stuck in life turns into suffering since we keep replaying it. But the discomfort of growth and healing turns into change, transformation, and more peace.

I will provide you with three simple tools to manage your emotional state and your fears when it comes to growth.

These simple practices will teach you how to exercise your emotional intelligence, stop reacting to things and people around you and find the courage to heal yourself.

    960 The Voice of Truth

    960 The Voice of Truth

In your life, where does the voice of truth come from? Whose whispers gain your greatest attention?

Maybe it's the constant failures and short-comings.

Desire to be supported and encourage by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACThttp://facebook.com/groups/thewomenofimpact

Maybe it's the faults of your past.

Maybe it's your own belief that you're never good enough.

Why is it that we hang out with our stumbles and failures questioning our worth?

Never once did God hesitate when He created you; fearfully and wonderfully made, knowing every hair on your head.

Yet where is the voice of truth?

Is it the naysayers, the badgers, the mockers? Is that where your voice of truth is being solidified and defined?

I want you to really think about whom you are putting your trust in.

The K.I.S.S. ~ The Voice of Truth!

REFLECTION: Today, I want you to reflect on these three questions.

    1. Where is the voice of truth coming from?
    2. What is the voice of truth telling you?
    3. How are you using the voice of truth in your life?

If you are hearing God, the only voice of truth, then you know you are loved, given a gift of salvation, and grace for your life's journey.

That's the voice of truth you need to be listening to.

Not the negative CRAP, the doubts and drama of others, and not the daily sagas of self-centered mindsets.

It's all about control, earthly control. What happened to Heavenly control?

Let God wash away the torment of lies that threaten your greatness He's creating within you.

Let it go! Let God have it all!

    Give Him your heart.
Dedicate your life to glorify Him.
Rejoice with the voice of truth.

As you go out this week...

"One step at a time leads to miles of greatness!"

May God bless you this week in all your steps, in all your endeavors. Seek His guidance. Praise His name. The voice of truth!

    Think like Elon Musk

How do people like Elon Musk, Richard Branson, and Steve Jobs, get outsized results? How do they think and operate at a level so much higher than everybody else?  How do they get so much done in the same amount of time that we have?

Here’s why: their default thinking is at a higher level than almost everyone else.

Most of us question whether or not we can earn enough to retire or put our kids through college, let alone investing billions into colonizing Mars.

While I feel I'm only about 10 steps up my own Mt. Everest— getting to where I'm at now was a huge goal for me. Doing what I love and earning more than I ever have with the flexibility to travel and spend more time with family. It required deep mindset work and oftentimes weird tactics to create breakthroughs and to outthink my own limiting beliefs.

It’s the same with these world-class performers.

What is it that these world-changers are doing differently? They're stepping back, asking different questions, and operating at a higher level.

Today I reveal to you tactics, questions, and mindset hacks that let you outthink your own limiting beliefs. Tune in now and let’s talk about these 11 high-level thinking questions to ask yourself to create powerful clarity and your long-awaited breakthrough in life.
