    Podcast Summary

    • Ever Given container ship incident: A warning sign of outdated infrastructureThe Ever Given container ship incident highlighted the need for governments and organizations to invest in modernizing infrastructure to prevent costly disruptions and ensure the smooth flow of global trade.

The Ever Given container ship incident, which blocked the Suez Canal and caused a significant disruption to global shipping, is a warning sign of outdated infrastructure and its potential impact on the global economy. The incident cost billions of dollars in trade growth and took months to rectify. The Suez Canal Authority is currently widening the waterway, but it will take years to complete and may not prevent similar incidents in the future. This is not an isolated incident, but a sign of a larger global problem that needs attention. It's important for governments and organizations to invest in modernizing infrastructure to prevent such disruptions and ensure the smooth flow of global trade.

    • The transformation of shipping through containerizationContainerization revolutionized shipping by using standardized containers, saving space and streamlining the process, despite initial resistance.

The interplay between the physical and digital worlds is crucial for innovation and economic growth. This was exemplified by the containerization of shipping in the mid-20th century. Before containerization, cargo was loaded and unloaded randomly, leading to inefficiencies and high costs. The idea for containerization came from a trucker named Malcolm McLean, who saw the potential to save space and streamline the process by using standardized containers that could be easily loaded and unloaded from ships. Despite initial resistance from labor unions, containerization revolutionized shipping and paved the way for increased global trade. This story serves as a reminder that sometimes the most transformative ideas come from unexpected places and require bold action to bring them to fruition.

    • Container shipping revolutionized global trade in the late 1960s and early 1970sContainer shipping's intermodal nature and standardization led to increased global exports, GDP growth, and a more interconnected world

The widespread adoption of container shipping during the late 1960s and early 1970s played a pivotal role in driving globalization and increasing international trade. Container shipping's intermodal nature allowed for seamless transportation across land, sea, and air, connecting the world through transportation networks, infrastructure, supply chains, and logistics. This led to a significant increase in global exports and GDP, with the US seeing a particularly notable rise. The standardization of container sizes, which was facilitated by organizations like the International Maritime Organization and International Organization for Standardization, further enhanced the efficiency and interconnectivity of global trade. The container is an unsung hero of logistics, enabling the movement of goods across vast distances and facilitating the growth of a global economy.

    • Standardization in Global Trade and the InternetStandardization is essential for efficient communication and exchange, as seen in container shipping and the Internet. The lack of a standard in global trade results in manual connections, lost information, and inefficiencies. Implementing a standardized communication protocol would streamline the exchange of goods, benefiting all parties involved.

Standardization plays a crucial role in facilitating efficient and seamless communication and exchange, whether it's in the digital world or in global trade. Four years ago, standards were introduced for large container ships, but the common container size, known as the 20-Foot Equivalent Unit (TEU), had been established decades earlier. Enforcement came through incentives, such as federal subsidies for ships adhering to standard sizes. The ISO standardization of container corner fittings further enabled the universal use of cranes and other equipment. Similarly, the Internet's growth can be attributed to the HTTP standard, which created a uniform way for devices to exchange information. Before HTTP, computers could only share data within their networks. The lack of a common language limited the size and reach of online communities. Today, the global trade network functions like an "Internet of physical goods," but it lacks a standard like HTTP. Instead, entities involved in the exchange of goods, such as suppliers, drayage companies, ports, and warehouses, must manually connect their networks. This results in lost information, redundancy, and brittle connections. To improve the exchange of goods, implementing a standardized communication protocol would help streamline the process, reducing labor-intensive tasks and increasing visibility and precision. This would lead to faster and more efficient logistics operations, ultimately benefiting all parties involved.

    • Standardization and common language needed for global tradeStandardization and democratization of information are essential for upgrading global trade infrastructure, improving trade, and reducing poverty.

The lack of standardization and universal language in global trade results in chaos and uncertainty, making it difficult to track the location and status of goods. This issue is comparable to the fragmentation and complexity in the software industry, where standardization and a common language have enabled searchability, programmability, and accessibility. However, upgrading the physical infrastructure that powers global trade is a massive undertaking, and the industry's fragmentation, with thousands of regional players, makes it challenging to achieve global visibility. This fragmentation also hinders progress towards reducing poverty and increasing trade, as each new connection or improvement can lead to cascading supply chain issues. Therefore, standardization and the democratization of information are crucial for strengthening infrastructure, improving trade, and reducing poverty.

    • Global Supply Chain Disruptions and Ocean ShippingThe pandemic caused a surge in demand for essential goods, leading to record-breaking ocean shipping rates and prolonged transit times. Despite efforts to increase container capacity with larger ships, infrastructure upgrades are lagging, causing a mismatch between demand and support.

The global supply chain has been significantly disrupted by the pandemic, leading to record-breaking rates for ocean shipping and prolonged transit times. The demand for essential goods caused a surge in shipping, but the infrastructure, including vessels, cranes, truck chassis, and truck drivers, couldn't keep up. Although bigger ships can carry more containers and reduce emissions per container, they also face physical limits and safety concerns. The industry is ordering new, larger ships, but the necessary infrastructure upgrades, such as rail and trucking, are not keeping pace. Despite these challenges, there are plans to expand the Suez Canal, highlighting the mismatch between the growing demand for physical goods and the limited infrastructure to support it.

    • Moving from the pre-Internet era to a post-Internet era in shippingStandardization and transparency in shipping will make the industry more efficient and effective, ultimately benefiting consumers.

The combination of infrastructure limitations and increasing demand is leading to higher costs for consumers in the shipping industry. This creates a vicious cycle of scarcity. However, there is a solution: standardization and increased transparency. By moving from the pre-Internet era to a post-Internet era in shipping, we can make significant progress. Standardization and transparency will make the industry more efficient and effective, ultimately benefiting consumers. This shift will be driven by software, enabling us to build a more connected and interconnected physical future. This change is essential as the world becomes increasingly globalized and the demand for quick and reliable shipping continues to grow.

Governing democracy, the internet, and boardrooms

    with @NoahRFeldman, @ahall_research, @rhhackett

Welcome to web3 with a16z. I'm Robert Hackett and today we have a special episode about governance in many forms — from nation states to corporate boards to internet services and beyond.

Our special guests are Noah Feldman, constitutional law scholar at Harvard who also architected the Meta oversight board (among many other things); he is also the author of several books. And our other special guest is Andy Hall, professor of political science at Stanford who is an advisor of a16z crypto research — and who also co-authored several papers and posts about web3 as a laboratory for designing and testing new political systems, including new work we'll link to in the shownotes.

Our hallway style conversation covers technologies and approaches to governance, from constitutions to crypto/ blockchains and DAOs. As such we also discuss content moderation and community standards; best practices for citizens assemblies; courts vs. legislatures; and much more where governance comes up.

Throughout, we reference the history and evolution of democracy — from Ancient Greece to the present day — as well as examples of governance from big companies like Meta, to startups like Anthropic.
