Play to Win, and When You Lose, Be Grateful You Had The Opportunity

    enOctober 23, 2019

    Podcast Summary

    • Being alive is a fortune, focus on offenseRecognize the lack of entitlement and take full accountability for your life to overcome obstacles and find happiness

We should be grateful for the fortune of being alive and approach life with a mindset of accountability and lack of entitlement. Gary Vaynerchuk emphasizes the importance of understanding the odds of being born as a human being and encourages us to focus on offense rather than defense. He believes that many people struggle with entitlement and lack the motivation to accomplish their goals due to this mindset. By recognizing the lack of entitlement and taking full accountability for our lives, we can overcome obstacles and find happiness. Gary's personal experience growing up in the Soviet Union and coming to America with little resources instilled in him a strong work ethic and lack of entitlement, which has contributed to his success.

    • Embrace personal responsibility for changesRecognize our power to change circumstances, stop blaming external factors, and focus on what we can control to improve situations. Leverage opportunities in the digital age to build something for ourselves.

Instead of blaming external factors or people for problems in our personal or professional lives, we should recognize that we have the power to change our circumstances by taking responsibility for our actions. Gary Vaynerchuk, a successful entrepreneur, emphasizes this perspective, sharing that every issue he faces at his marketing company, VaynerMedia, ultimately stems from his own decisions. He encourages us to stop dwelling on things we cannot control and instead focus on what we can do to improve our situations. Moreover, he highlights the unprecedented opportunities available in today's digital age, where platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube are free and accessible to everyone, enabling us to build something for ourselves. By embracing this mindset and taking action, we can overcome challenges and make the most of opportunities.

    • Capitalizing on Instagram story ads and shifting focus to LinkedInFocus on where the audience's attention lies, produce valuable content consistently, and be persistent to build a following on various platforms

Instagram story ads present a unique opportunity for entrepreneurs and individuals to reach a large audience at relatively low costs. This trend has been seen before in the history of digital marketing, specifically on Google and Facebook. The speaker, who focuses on "day trading attention," emphasizes the importance of being attentive to where the collective audience's focus lies and capitalizing on it before the prices increase. He currently sees great potential in LinkedIn, which he believes is currently acting more like Facebook did years ago in terms of organic reach. However, it's essential to note that producing valuable content consistently is key to success, as the speaker himself has experienced the long hours and dedication required to build a following. Overall, the speaker encourages everyone to start with zero followers and remain persistent in their efforts to create and share content on various platforms.

    • Stop Making Excuses, Put in the WorkFocus on creating valuable content instead of buying 'dumb shit' on social media, and put in the effort required to build something meaningful.

Success requires hard work and dedication, but many people are confused about this due to the rare cases of seemingly overnight success and the abundance of excuses in the system. Gary Vaynerchuk shares his experience as a poor student and how he sees people making excuses instead of putting in the effort required. He emphasizes the opportunity that social media platforms like LinkedIn provide to create a side hustle around things we love while still maintaining a day job. However, he warns that 98% of people are buying "dumb shit" instead of focusing on creating valuable content. In essence, the key takeaway is to stop making excuses, put in the work, and leverage social media to build something meaningful.

    • Living frugally for successFocus on saving money, not buying unnecessary items for validation, to build a better future.

The key to success for many immigrants in America is not about being smarter or working harder, but rather living frugally and saving money for extended periods of time. The speaker shares his personal experience of living a simple life in his twenties and saving money to build a business, instead of buying unnecessary items to impress others. He urges people to reconsider their spending habits and stop buying things they don't need, as doing so will only lead to financial loss and potential unhappiness. The speaker also criticizes the superficiality of social media and the desire for validation through material possessions. Ultimately, success is about being happy, not about how much money one has. The speaker encourages a shift in perspective and a focus on living authentically and true to oneself.

    • Lessons from our past shape our future successesEmbrace both success and failure, understand there's no passive income, and let past experiences shape future successes.

The way we are raised and the experiences we go through shape us into who we become. Gary Vaynerchuk shared his personal story of how his mother's approach to raising him, which included allowing him to experience both success and failure, played a significant role in his success today. He emphasized the importance of not creating entitlement and allowing children to learn from their losses. Vaynerchuk also highlighted that there is no such thing as passive income and that making significant wealth requires handling a great deal of anxiety and stress. He encouraged the audience to embrace both the soft and hard aspects of life and understand that they are interconnected. In essence, the lessons from our past, good or bad, contribute to our present and future successes.

    • Embrace Opportunities and Add Value to OthersInstead of focusing on personal gain, entrepreneurs should adopt a consumer-centric mindset to provide value and build meaningful relationships.

The opportunities for entrepreneurship and personal success are immense, but often overlooked due to societal pressure and comparisons. From making funny videos on Instagram to selling products online, anyone can start a business and potentially be successful. However, the key to success lies in having good intentions and focusing on the consumer. Instead of asking "what's in it for me?", entrepreneurs should ask "how can I provide value to my customers?" By adopting a consumer-centric mindset, businesses like Amazon have thrived, and individuals can build an audience and establish meaningful relationships. So, embrace the opportunities around you, and always keep in mind how you can add value to others.

    • Embrace the power of the Internet to share your unique voice and perspectiveFocus on what makes you happy online, embrace your voice, and use the Internet to connect and build communities, while staying true to yourself.

In today's digital age, information and attention are valuable and easily accessible resources. You don't need to spend money on buying information or worry about what others think when sharing your content online. Instead, focus on what makes you happy and use the Internet to its full potential. The Internet is like a goldmine waiting to be explored, and the only thing holding you back is your insecurity. Embrace your unique voice and perspective, and don't let fear of rejection or self-doubt prevent you from sharing your ideas and passions with the world. Moreover, the speaker encourages us to reflect on our motivations for pursuing success and happiness. Are we doing it for external validation or because we genuinely enjoy the process? The Internet provides us with an unprecedented opportunity to connect with people, build communities, and create businesses from the comfort of our own homes. It's essential to recognize this and take advantage of it while staying true to ourselves. Lastly, the speaker shares his personal story of discovering his entrepreneurial spirit at a young age, emphasizing the importance of being proactive and taking action towards our goals. By focusing on what we can control and staying persistent, we can overcome obstacles and create meaningful experiences for ourselves.

    • Work for Passion, Not Just MoneyPrioritize happiness and passion over financial success when choosing a career or business. Building a business around something we love increases the likelihood of hard work and success.

Happiness and passion should be the driving forces behind our work, rather than just financial gains. The speaker shares his personal experience of wanting to work at his father's liquor store at a young age, not for the money, but because he loved it. He emphasizes that many athletes, despite having large sums of money, are not truly happy because they didn't love their game. The speaker encourages building a business around something we're passionate about, even if it seems insignificant or unprofitable, as we're more likely to work hard and be successful at it. He challenges the audience to consider prioritizing happiness and passion over financial success and living more humbly, as the opportunity to do what we love is a rare and valuable one. The speaker ends by encouraging listeners to share the podcast and subscribe, emphasizing the importance of spreading this message.

The Most Important Question In Business

The Most Important Question In Business

Here’s the problem most people run into when they create content online: They think they have to have something to say. So many of you aren’t putting out content online because you think you need to have the perfect message, or something “valuable” to share (based on your own arbitrary opinion). And what I’m telling you is, you will get more business if you put out literally anything. If you’re an auto dealer, you could put out a 5 min video every afternoon just recapping what happened in your day. If you’re a real estate agent, you could post updates on what your opinions are about the Super Bowl teams. Get on social media and tell your truth … it’s really that simple.

    CrunchLabs: Mark Rober

    CrunchLabs: Mark Rober

As one of the most successful creators on YouTube, Mark Rober doesn’t see what he does as a business. Instead, it’s a way to celebrate science in the most joyful way possible. While working as an engineer at NASA, he made his YouTube debut with a tutorial on how to make a gory Halloween costume with two iPads and a lot of duct tape. Over time, his videos became more elaborate, including a belly flop into a pool full of Jello, and a demo of a glitter-fart bomb to get revenge on porch pirates. Within a few years, Mark was teaching online science classes and selling subscription boxes for kids. Today, his YouTube channel has 5.5 billion views, 48 million subscribers…and–astonishingly, given that audience–less than 150 videos.

HIBT Lab! Nas Company: Nuseir Yassin

In 2016, Nuseir Yassin quit his cushy tech job to embark on a journey around the globe. The idea was simple: post a one-minute video every day for 1,000 days to show the world from his perspective.

The execution, of course, was much more challenging...

This week on How I Built This Lab, Nuseir recaps his experience building a worldwide following as the creator behind Nas Daily, and how Nas Company has since raised $23 million to build content creation services and software that bring people together. Plus, how Nuseir navigates the self-doubt tied to his Palestinian identity, and why he chooses to spotlight positive stories from around the world.
